A deep rumble drowned out the cries of alarm from the others as the pair went over the edge.
The rumble was followed by the sound of something cracking, but both sounds were obscured by the sound of water.
Jack suddenly found he was free, but before he could move towards the edge a helicopter appeared over it and whipped up sand as it landed.
The man who Jack had talked to in the city jumped out and yelled.
"We have to go. The dam, it has been broken!"
"That man over there, get him as well!" Jack shouted back and pointed at Ash.
He followed Gwen and Ianto and shut the door as soon as Ash was on board.
As the helicopter rose, he looked out at the scene. Water was racing down the ravine, heading for Aswan, and there was nothing he could do to stop it. Thousands were going to die, including the Doctor and Seska.
It was then that he realised something was amiss.
"Where's the Master?"
The Master could only watch in mute horror as his husband and his son disappeared over the edge. He'd tried to move, but still couldn't and he had flinched like the others when the dam had broken.
Suddenly he found he could move and without waiting for the others, he sprinted to the edge and looked down. He couldn't see any sign of…there, a flash of colour in the murky water.
He heard the helicopter but took no notice of it. He heard it land, but he wasn't going to let Harkness stop him again.
He threw off his jacket and jumped.
The water hit him like a physical blow, but he shrugged it off; his focus on finding his family.
It was hard to see amidst the foam; it kept blurring his eyesight. He spat out water and yelled.
"Theta!"
But his voice was lost in the roar of the water, and the force of it was now becoming too strong, even for him. He was being carried towards a swirling mass of water and debris, and was in danger of being sucked under. With the last of his strength, he managed to get to the edge and slightly calmer water.
He stood on a protruding rock and looked out at the torrent.
"Thete!" he called again, but there was nothing…just water.
His hearts sank, along with any hope of finding them alive. He leapt from the rock onto another, until he reached the relative safety of the bank.
The water didn't seem to be rising anymore, and he wasn't bothered about the destruction further down. All he cared about was finding the bodies of his loved ones; there was no way he was going to let human touch them. With a shiver he turned from the water and began picking his way down river, and as he walked the rage that had been boiling in his blood turned to stone cold revenge.
Jack looked out at the devastation…all that water, held back for so long had caused such destruction.
The town of Aswan had suffered the most, but miles of land were either under water or covered in suffocating mud. The human cost was beyond imagination, not just the dead, but those that would suffer afterwards.
All that fertile land along the Nile was lost.
Amidst all of that, they had to find the Master, who had escaped to who knew where. But the worst thing was the search for the bodies of the Doctor and his son.
He'd watched with horror as Seska had impaled his mother with some kind of weapon, and he'd seen the blade protruding from Seska.
Since then he'd been dodging film crews and reporters, all wanting to know what Torchwood and UNIT were doing here.
"It's a bloody mess," a voice said beside him.
He nodded as Doctor Stoneleigh stopped next to him.
"Do you think there's a chance they survived?"
Jack sighed, "Honestly, and know this is the wrong thing to say, but I hope not. If the Doctor isn't the Doctor, then I don't want him to."
"And what about Seska?"
"I saw where the knife was. It looked fatal."
"Won't he regenerate?"
"I don't know, he may not have the energy."
"And what about the Master? If he's alive, he's not exactly going to take this lightly."
"Then I'll deal with him when and if it happens. How many bodies have they recovered?"
"The total stands at five thousand so far. God knows how many are under the mud or were swept away."
"What about the riots?"
"Under control, for now."
Jack finally turned, "Why are you here?"
"People want answers. I'm here to take you back to Geneva, the Security Council need answers."
Jack sighed, he guessed he'd have to go.
"Find them for me," he said.
Doctor Stoneleigh put a hand on his shoulder.
"My men will do their best."
Seska had seen the horror in his mother's eyes, just before the flare of light that told him Seth was back.
It had taken every ounce of courage he had to impale his mother on the object; it didn't matter that he himself had been stabbed. Somehow he managed to hold onto his mother as they hit the water and were instantly submerged.
He had no idea how far they were carried, it was all he could do to keep them both above the surface. He let out a cry when he hit something and he turned his head and saw a miracle; they had been swept towards the bank.
With what strength he had he hauled his mother out of the water. He lay exhausted, but only for a few seconds; until the pain reminded him.
He was a physician, he knew the prognosis.
He got to his hands and knees and knelt over his mother, the obscene object sticking out of his belly.
It had done its job.
Gritting his teeth he pulled the object from his mother. It was glowing and with a look of disgust he threw it into the water.
His mother let out a gasp and his eyes opened. They no longer glowed with the presence of Seth, but they were filled with pain and confusion.
"Seska?" he said in no more than a whisper.
"Ssh, mother, save your strength."
"Regeneration…soon."
Seska shook his head, "No, the device, it removed Seth, but at a cost."
"Then death…good…peace."
Seska shook his head, "Not yet."
He faltered…his time was running out.
"Seska?" his mother said again, as if sensing something was wrong.
"My gift to you," Seska said.
He looked at his hands, they were starting to glow. He placed them on his mother and closed his eyes.
His mother's eyes widened.
"No…please."
Then all Seska knew was the heat of regeneration and he poured it into his mother. They were engulfed in light until seconds later it was gone.
For a few fleeting seconds the Doctor had seen through his own eyes and in those fleeting seconds he'd seen what Seska was about to do, and what Seth was going to do…..he wouldn't stop Seska, but he had no way of stopping Seth.
He woke with a gasp when pain sliced through his gut. The first thing he realised was that Seth had gone; then he realised he would regenerate soon.
"Regeneration….soon," he said to his son.
They would regenerate together and their lives would begin again.
But his son shook his head…the device had rid him of Seth but had inhibited his regenerative process. Good, he would have some peace at last.
He could feel the energy building up in his son. Soon he would move away, and if he was fortunate enough he would see his son's new face.
But then Seska did something unexpected, he placed glowing hands on his chest. With growing horror, he knew what he was doing.
"No…please," he begged and then he felt nothing but the energy of regeneration.
His eye flew open again and he shot up, his hand instinctively going to his stomach; It came away clean; the wound had healed. He looked at the hand, it was still the same hand…how?
Then it came to him, and with sinking dread he looked round.
His hearts shattered.
His son was dead, lying in a pool of his own blood; eyes dulled with death.
"No…no," he breathed and crawled over to his son's body. He took him in his arms, he was already growing cold.
"No…no…"
His words became a howl of soul deep grief.
He fell silent and closed his eyes and tears flowed. He could feel the extra regeneration energy fizzing around his body.
His tears suddenly ceased and he opened his eyes. They were a dark as any black hole.
He knew exactly what to do with the extra power.
