Chapter 21
…
Andrea was sitting talking to Julio when Andy walked into the office, making his way over to Provenza's desk.
"Flynn, we weren't expecting you back this afternoon. We can manage without you both." Provenza grumbled.
"Don't worry I'm not staying long, we just wanted to show you the ultrasound from earlier."
Andrea heard the word ultrasound and was over by Andy's side in seconds.
"You have a picture, let's have a look then." She beamed.
She took the photo from his hand, a bright smile spreading over her face as she examined it.
"Oh my god, oh Andy it's so beautiful."
"How the hell can you even tell, it's just a blur." Provenza groaned.
"You're a typical male Provenza, you know that?"
"Only way to be Hobbs."
"I'll bet Sharon's over the moon huh?"
"You could say that."
"So is everything okay with Sharon and the baby?"
"Her bloody pressure's a little high but other than that she's fine."
"Oh thank god for that."
"Yeah, Jennifer, her Doctor wants her to rest up for the remainder of the day….especially after her dizzy spell in here earlier."
Andrea and Provenza exchanged a quick glance which didn't go unnoticed by Andy.
"She…told you about that?"
"Yeah she did, eventually. When it happened again in the car park just before the ultrasound, she decided to fill me in."
"Flynn she asked us not to say anything."
"She didn't want to worry you Andy; I know we should have told you."
"Yeah Andrea you should have, I know she doesn't want me worrying but I'd worry more if something more drastic were to happen to her, to either of them"
"Flynn's right, next time we'll tell you. You have my word on that." Provenza smiled.
"Good, well I need to grab a few things before I head back so…I'll leave you to it."
"Hey, is Sharon still on for shopping on Saturday?"
"She's looking forward to it."
"Great, tell her I'll call her."
"I will, night Andrea."
…
Sharon got up, grabbing her cardigan from the chair and pulling it tightly around her as the cold air hit her. She poked her head in Rusty's room to check on him.
"Rusty, how's your homework going?"
"Yeah, I'm nearly finished. Did you have a good sleep?"
"I did thank you, what do you fancy for dinner?"
"You're supposed to be resting, I'll do it."
"Honey you don't need to do that, I'm the parent, you're the child."
"Yeah and you're having one and supposed to be taking it easy, so I'm cooking…no arguments."
"You're a good Son Rusty."
"Stir Fry okay?"
"Sounds lovely, finish your homework…I'll be in the other room."
Sharon closed the door and made her way through to the kitchen and poured herself a glass of water. She heard the doorbell, placing her glass down on the counter while she went to answer the door.
"Jess honey, what are doing here?"
"Hey Mom, how are you?"
"Oh honey I'm fine, come on in."
Jessica followed Sharon through and sat down on the sofa beside her, Sharon bringing her arm around her Daughter, pulling her closer.
"Mom, you okay?"
"Mmmm, why?"
"You're being very cuddly."
"I just miss you kids when you're not here with me."
"Mom, I know you said I didn't have to move back home but…."
"Jess no, now look we discussed this at the hospital. I will not have you or Ricky uprooting just for me, you have your own lives to be getting on with. Just visit more is all I ask."
"We will, I promise. I wasn't actually expecting you to be home, I thought I'd make dinner for you guys…have it ready for when you got home."
"Oh Jess that was a lovely thought but Rusty's beat you too it."
"You think he'd refuse a helping hand?"
"I don't think he'd mind."
"Hey Mom, what are you doing home so early….you okay?"
"I'm fine, Andy and I were at my Doctor's office and we…."
"Oh my god, what's wrong?"
"Nothing, we had our first scan today that's all."
"Oh brilliant and is everything okay?"
"Everything's fine, would you like to see a picture?"
"Sure."
Sharon shuffled around in her bag that was still on the table from when they'd arrived home and brought out a small black and white picture, handing it to Jessica.
"Oh Mom, it's so tiny."
"You can see it?"
"Yeah of course…why?"
"It must be a male thing, Rusty didn't have a clue what he was looking at."
Sharon watched Jessica as the smile on her Daughter's face faded after a short time.
"Jess honey, what's wrong?"
"It's just weird you know, I never expected my Mom to be having a baby at this stage of her life."
"I know I've asked you this before but you kids, you are happy about this…the baby…Andy?"
"Oh Mom yeah of course, I'm sorry I didn't mean to sound like we weren't. It was just all a shock I guess, everything kinda' happened at once."
"It's certainly been a rollercoaster ride so far."
"It'll get better and we're here to help all we can, I promise."
"Thank you honey."
Sharon pulled her Daughter into her arms, hugging her tightly just as Rusty walked into the room.
"Jess hey, I didn't know you were coming."
"Thought I'd surprise you, hey how do fancy some help with dinner."
"Sure, I'll never turn down an offer of help when it comes to cooking."
"Are you sure you two will be okay on your own?"
"Mom, we'll be fine."
"Well then, if you wouldn't mind…I think I'll go and lie down for a little while until Andy gets back."
"Go ahead, don't worry about us Mom."
…
Andy was standing outside the shop, the rain beginning to fall when he felt a warm hand on his shoulder. Turning around he came face to face with his old Chief.
"Hey, how ya' doin'?"
"Chief, thanks for coming. I know it was a little last minute."
"Oh now don't go apologising…did I hear ya' correctly though, you and Captain' Raydor?"
"You did, look we haven't told anyone yet…not even her kids or mine for that matter. I think I need to fill you in on a few things, you fancy a coffee."
"Sure, come on."
They walked along the busy street and walked into the first bistro they found, taking a seat…Andy ordering them both a latte.
"So, ya' said in the message that you and Sharon are gettin' married?"
"We are, as I said…we still need to tell everyone."
"You told me first, well am' honoured."
"I need a woman's opinion. You see when I proposed, I didn't actually have a ring."
"You asked me here to pick out a ring?"
"If you wouldn't mind, I know you and Sharon didn't always get along and I would have asked Andrea but she's got a lot on right now and I…."
"Andy, am' honoured really. I'd love to help ya."
"Yeah…great."
"So come on then tell me, do y'all miss me?"
"Always Chief."
"Brenda now."
"Brenda."
"Sharon settled in, I heard she took on Rusty."
"He's become like another Son, he adores her."
"How are the Team?"
"They're good, you're missed."
"Yeah I'll bet."
"Sharon's really made the place her own now; she's doing a great job."
"Well am' glad. She's good at what she does. I'm still kinda' shocked about you are her though, I never thought I'd see you two gettin' together."
"I didn't at first, she's not the same person she was when she worked for FID, she's changed…mellowed a lot."
"So how come you haven't told your kids about the marriage."
"Well Sharon's filing for divorce from Jack at the minute and to be honest, they've had a lot to take in the last week or so."
"How come?"
"There's one other little thing I haven't told you yet, it's a bit of a shock actually."
"Well don't go keepin' me in suspense Lieutenant."
"Sharon's pregnant."
"She's….wow she…you certainly know how to drop a bombshell, don't ya'."
"We're happy."
"And am' happy for ya', really."
"Thanks Chief."
"Ahhh…"
"Brenda."
"Hurry up and drink your latte and we'll get goin'.
