The Doctor ran out of the prison and looked around desperately. The farthest fence had collapsed and walkers were flooding in by the dozens. Their snarling teeth searching for the warm flesh it demanded. People ran in every direction to get away. No one had been caught in death's grip yet but it would come and it would come quickly. All of his anger and frustration had vanished at the sound of screaming. He needed to find Rose now. He ran past every person and checked each face for the familiar one. He grabbed a woman with collar length waving brown hair by the arm.
"Have you seen Rose? She has blond hair, in her 20's, British." He grabbed at her desperately.
"No I haven't." She stopped running to look around and pant anxiously. An asian man grabbed her arm to pull her away.
"We have to go!" He yelled and looked at the Doctor. "Rose was that way with Carol a couple of minutes ago." He continued to yell and pull the women. The Doctor turned to run but the man called again while he was half running. "Doctor come back!"
"No I have to find her!" He was now pushing past everyone with no concern until he found the hoard was approaching him. He searched and found a basket of vegetables laying in the grass. "No…" He whispered picking it up and examining it. He shined his screwdriver on it and whispered no again. It landed in the grass and he was off running madly in any direction he could. He screamed her name at the top of his lungs. He was nearing the hoarder with every step while everyone else ran the other way. He stopped to scan and was turning in circles trying to get a glimpse of her hair or her voice even for a second. He looked to the sky and screamed her name again. Then he was being lifted into a truck bed against his will. "Get off!" He screamed at Daryl who had pulled him in.
"Go!" Daryl told the driver with force. The Doctor tried to jump out but Daryl held him there. "She's with Carol she'll be fine, we have to go." Daryl was a large man who looked like he didn't play around. He had his scruffy beard and cut off sleeves that screamed don't mess with me. But the Doctor did, he messed with him a whole lot. He tried everything to get out of the truck but finally was pinned down by the larger man.
"If you jump out you're dead and if you're dead you can't find her!" he shouted into the doctor's face. They met eyes and Daryl released the hold he had. He was right and the Doctor knew that but he couldn't just stand by and leave her. Not here of all places. Fixed time or not he was not going to let her die here. He breathed and sat back without moving. They didn't say anything for a while and just sat watching the road pass.
"I need to regenerate into someone less scrawny."
"You what?"
Rose looked up from her bush just a little but Carol pushed her head back down. She put her lips to Rose's ear and whisper "Stay down." She obeyed and just waited worrying about everything and fearing for her own safety. It felt like she was kneeling on glass but she couldn't move. A slurry of footsteps rushed past the two who had taken refuge in the nearest forest. Carol said they were too close to the hoard to make it back to the prison so the forest provided cover at least. They knelt, Carol covering Rose just a little bit so she couldn't be seen. She could feel Rose shaking so he held her, giving her something to hold into. They were still as they could be until Rose heard her name being yelled. It sounded so scared and desperate. She tried to stand but Carol wouldn't let her. She held her down and told her no. Rose whined and looked up as best she could but couldn't see anything.
"Carol let me go. "She hissed.
"No I won't let you die, plus you won't make it to him anyway. He's too far."
"Let me try."
"No."
Rose tried to get out of her grip but she was pinned. If you stood with all of her strength she would not only alert them to her but she would give Carol away too. She was so scared but it only got worse when she heard him yelling "get off me" She sobbed but Carol didn't budge.
"Oh for god sakes please tell me he's not being eaten!" She begged her older friend.
"No, Rick has him. They're leaving. He's safe." There was something bitter sweet in her voice. She wanted to be on that truck but she was glad her friends were. Tears rolled down Rose's cheeks in steady streams. She covered her mouth to stiffen her sobs. She didn't know if she would see him again and she didn't know if she would make it through the night. But god be damned she wasn't going to die here.
They waited a little longer until the hoard fully passed into the depths of the prison. When it was clear they ran into the center of the forest. Carol remembered the area well enough from when they first found the place. They ran until Rose was bent over a tree throwing up from exhaustion. She never worked this hard to survive. As she stared at her lunch now on the ground she never missed civilization more in her life then right then. A firm hand held her shoulder.
"We have to keep moving. We don't have to run anymore but we can't stop yet." Carol said looking around for those undead bastards. Rose straightened and silently agreed. It didn't matter how tired she was, she had to get somewhere safe. She had to survive to see him again. They walked fast through the branches and over various logs that scattered the thick Savanna forest. The sky was at midday and the heat was relentless. The humid air stuck to the two like honey on a roll. Through the thick trees they could faintly see a building. As the apporched it turned into a small farm house. Carol felt her pockets and scanned her legs with an open palm. "Shit, I forgot my gun." She pulled a hunting knife out it's sleeve and she approached the house. She waved Rose away in case of danger but the stubborn headed girl didn't listen. She followed with distance between them.
The house from the outside looked dark and musty. The windows smeared with dust, dirt, and bloody fingerprints. The door of the home was closed firmly. Carol ran around the home quickly checking for broken door and windows leaving Rose on the porch. Everything looked relatively untouched. It was all a little dirty but the home wasn't damaged. It was as if a elderly couple would come walking up the steps any minute to resume their quiet little life. Carol came back and put a finger to her lips. Then with heavy hand she knocked on the door harshly.
"But no one lives here." Rose whispered into her friends ear. Carol waved her away and waited crouched below the closest window. Rustling could be heard inside and tapping on the window. Carol looked at her companion and peaked over the window seal. An old woman's face was pushing against the dirty glass. Her broken blood stained fingernails scratching. Carol stood and lead Rose to the bottom of the porch and went back to the door. She flung it open and whistled. The walker came stumbling out. It tripped over the door frame and came crashing down. She placed one boot over the neck and drove her knife into its' skull. She had thrown the body off the porch and into the woods before it had even stopped twitching. She went into the home and came back a little while later with two more bodies. Rose sat on the steps and held her head in her hands. She ran her hands through her hair and noticed several twigs and leafs stuck in the strands but she didn't pick them out. She sat like this until it was over and Carol was tapping her shoulder.
"We're clear." Was all she said before she went back into the home. The living room was chaos of blood and body parts. It looked like the set of a horror movie but unfortunately the horror was all real. "We're staying in the upstairs bedroom. It's clean." Carol began to ascend the stairs while continuing. "I also found some cans in the cupboard that look to be okay so we'll eat that. Tomorrow we'll go find some water and see if we can get somewhere else before night fall. " She opened the bedroom door and it was like night and day or Heaven and Hell if you consider an old person's bedroom to be heaven. There were blankets spread on the floor with cans in the center. "You never know what has been on those beds and I found the blankets in the closet." Carol sat down on the blankets and sighed. Rose didn't move for a minute. She looked around at the abandoned room and at their makeshift bed. This was better than down stairs but it was still hell.
The Doctor laid back onto the coats and various blankets the group had found on the road. Carl, Rick, Daryl and Michonne had all bunched into the bed of the truck with the Doctor to sleep for the night. It wasn't the worst sleeping conditions he's faced but it also wasn't great. It was still so hot even in the night. The Doctor removed his top coat and layed it beneath his head. But that was all he dared remove. The rule was you kept all clothing on because if you had to leave in a hurry you don't have time to put it all on. He kept as far away from the other people as he could and tried to get comfortable. The next day they were going to find somewhere to hunger down for a day or two then they could go back and see what they could make of the prisons condition. Even though Rick didn't say it they were also going to try and look for the dead, the newly dead.
"Doctor…?" Carl whispered.
"Yes?"
"I think Carol and Rose are okay." He said quietly
"I think so too." He said after a long pause. But he wasn't really sure if he believed it.
