Hey Everyone! It's . I do apologize for the long wait; you know how college is. Anyway here's another chapter; the last of the flashbacks not the story. Remember I do not own Black Butler or its characters just my Ocs and do not forget Undertaker vs. Avis battle coming up soon!
Ch. 20 Goodbye My Love
Flashback four months later…
Avis skipped merrily down the street her hand intertwined with Lady Tabitha's as they entered the market. "Ms. Tabitha you didn't have to accompany me to the market; I could get the supplies myself." Sue said feeling a bit nervous. She smiled warmly," Nonsense Sue I intended to come anyway and little Avis here wanted to get some candy for the children."
"Is that true, child?" Sue asked, Avis nodded." Alright then I'll go find fish, eggs, fruit, and hopefully some cinnamon." A frown appeared on the noble woman's face," We are out already?" Sue nodded" Yes my lady apparently the children love cinnamon on their porridge." Tabitha smiled the children seemed to crave the spice more and more." Then how about Avis and I find the spice while you get everything else."
Sue's eyes widened," That's quite dandy Ms. Tabitha but Tillich is not here and you are unprotected!" Tabitha seized Sue's palms in her own," I will be fine and don't worry; come Avis." The little one followed Tabitha as they disappeared into the crowd; the market was very busy especially on a bright sunny afternoon." Stay close little one I don't want you lost." Tabitha whispered as she gently urged the child in front of her; the girl obediently obliged to her request and walked forward.
They soon stopped at one of the stands, Tabitha began asking the store clerk if they had the spice. While Avis allowed her eyes to wander the huge market; there was so much excitement and the smell of food was tempting. The girl gazed to one of the stands right behind Tabitha; it was filled with cakes, pies, cookies and most of all candy.
With a quick glance at her surrogate mother, Avis quietly leapt toward the baker's stand. The little girl bought two boxes filled with sweet then returned to the other side of the street to find Tabitha gone. She searched through the large crowd of people fear gripping her heart as Avis ran into a nearby alley. Tears surrounding her irises, she was alone just like when her parents passed away it was too much to bare." Well hello there little one heh, heh."
Avis gazed stranger, his smile bringing a great deal of comfort. She wiped her tears smiling back at the man who gently cradled her in his arms. He began walking into the crowd, Avis gripping tightly to dark cloak her curiosity getting the best of her as she reached for a silvery bang hiding his face. The man caught her hand giving it a small peck, causing the child to giggle and intertwine her hand with his own. He stopped in front a fruit stand where a frantic Tabitha stood with an equally worried Sue;" Avis!"
Immediately the little girl was brought into the arms of the woman; a kiss placed on her head" Don't ever leave my sight again, you had me worried sick sweetheart!" Avis nodded cuddling into Tabitha's chest." Thank you kind sir." Tabitha said addressing the man." Heh, heh it was my pleasure take good care of her." His hand slowly untied with her small one and he took his leave, while Tabitha and Sue proceeded to leave the market; Avis looking back where the man had been.
The carriage ride was peaceful on its way back to the mansion; but for some odd reason Tabitha and Sue were both uneasy. Whether it was from was the aftermath of missing Avis in the market, they didn't know but instead felt a chill run down there as they viewed a terrifying sight. The mansion was on fire, smoke flooded from each wing of the house as Tabitha burst out of the carriage in shock.
"Ms. Tabitha I don't see the children anywhere, you don't think there-"before Sue could finish Tabitha was running toward the inflamed building shouting back at the woman to keep Avis in the carriage. Sue stepped into the carriage and held the trembling child; her eyes taking in the destruction in front of her. The child's eyes widened when she remembered her cousins Mason and Fred were probably inside; she pushed away from the woman and ran inside not hearing Sue calling her name.
The girl hurried through the burning halls the smoke almost blinding her; it was hard to breath but she didn't care. Her feet led her to the room she shared with Mason and Fred; her eyes becoming sick at what she saw. Blood martyred the floors and walls; all the children of the house their lifeless bodies filled the room. Avis covered her mouth with her hands and fled the hall the remainder of her family was no more.
She escaped noticing quickly that the sky was growing dark; Avis saw the carriage in view but also Sue, Tillich, and Lady Newman. From where she stood, the girl saw blood on the butler's gloves and some on the helm of Lady Newman's dress. A sickening smile stretched across her face while Tillich remained stoic and kept silent." You did it, both of you!" Avis heard Sue yell," Actually it was my command the orphanage was useless and you know better than I that I deserved the fortune not Tabitha. This is just a little incentive and I hated having those brats running around everywhere."
Sue stood in disgust at Newman's words,"You deserve nothing! You truly are a heartless monster just like your mother Lady Freiberg! Your mother was so envious of Lady Daniels being your father's favorite that she did away with her. If you deserve anything it sure as heck ain't that fortunate you heartless brute!"
Lady Newman grabbed Sue by the throat cutting off her breathing," Hold your tongue." She tightened her hold until Sue lay limb on the ground unresponsive. Tillich eyes widened before glaring at his mistress, how he despised the woman. "Finally now there is one more loose end to tie up!" Newman shouted happily. Before long her eyes caught sight of Avis, Tillich on command brought the child to his mistress."Ahh Philip and Ramona's little brat; I hear you were the only surviving child since their first was a still born. You are seen as their little miracle, no disagreeing on that matter you survived this far."
"But now-"A knife was pulled from beneath her dress," You will join them!" Avis closed her eyes awaiting the pain but it didn't come. She opened them to look at Tillich his entire face frozen in shock and sadness; she turned to see that Tabitha had pushed herself in between Avis and the blade now embedded in her side. Newman pulled away as Tabitha collapsed to the ground;" You know sister you were not always a kind soul or the most generous. You were a vain, deceitful, and selfish person. But despite that you are my sister and I love you regardless."
The woman gazed upon her sister before running away, Tillich released Avis who went to the still open carriage. He took Tabitha in his arms eyes showing sorrow and regret;" My love I'm sorry forgive me." She smiled placing a finger to his lips," You could not defy her it is in your nature. You are not to blame my heart you acted upon command. I know if could you would have not done it, I love you so much." He leaned forward capturing her lips, slowly the butler watched her life slowly drift away.
Sue regained consciousness in time to see Tillich disappear from Tabitha's lifeless body." Ms. Tabitha." Her eyes filled with tears as she looked upon the body; she stood and gazed toward the mansion, then to a weeping Avis." There all gone." Sue took the child in her arms, looking toward the darkened skies. They could no longer stay here and she had to find a new safer home for the girl; Sue walked into the streets her limbs ached from exhaustion.
"Heh, heh what's this?" Sue turned to the man and breathed a sigh of relief." Oh, it's just you from the market." He nodded, strolling over to the woman his hand began stroking the sleeping girl's hair." Tragedy has befallen you." Sue sighed," Yes do you know a place that is willing to take her in. She can't stay with me since I'm now unemployed with no home to offer her."
The man tapped his chin," There is a place it's not much but I promise she will be taken care of." She smiled," Good." Sue kissed Avis's head before giving the girl to the man." Tell her I'm so sorry." She then ran in the opposite direction, disappearing into the fog of the night while the man sped toward the direction of the carnival. Another man waited outside near the entrance; the girl was thrust into his arms as he wrapped her in a blanket and walked to his trailer.
