(A/N): Please Note: This chapter is a non GDE chapter. Which means this was not a chapter done with others in Google Drive. However, Chapter 22 will be a GDE and I think I'll begin doing GDE's every other chapter so I don't have to continually wait for people's schedules to clear up for every chapter.
That and I'm going on vacation soon and I might as well work on this while I'm there.
Enjoy the chapter!
Chapter 21:An Eye For a Madman
"I love you, Rose."
"I love you..."
"I..."
"Who are you?"
"Where am I?
"You aren't human."
"You infected."
"Not food."
"Need food."
"Flesh things... near... I hear them."
I watch as my body moves and pounces onto an entering Zoey, I watch in horror as I rip out her throat and Rose tries to pull me back, and then I kill her too.
"My food! Not yours, mine!" I say in the infected language. "DIE!" I say like a Hunter getting ready to pounce.
And then... I wake up.
I wake up screaming, much like a Hunter would. I feel angry, too angry. I look around madly, looking for a threat. But I see nothing. My breathing slowly goes back to normal, and I wipe sweat off of my face. I look at my hand and see blood, rather than sweat.
"Oh no..." I say as I get up and run to the mirror in the bathroom.
I look into the mirror and see blood coming from my tear ducts. My eyes were changing. And I hoped that in the near future I wouldn't be forced to claw them out. I turn on the faucet and I try to clean the blood off my face, and it works pretty well. Once the bleeding stops, I go into the main room and lean back on a couch and rest my eyes. They had a small stinging pain in them that I couldn't get out.
I look around the dark room. It was probably only about 2 AM. It was quiet, a little too quiet. It made me restless. Every few seconds I would twitch, my infected mind trying to break through and perform dark deeds. I fought it strongly though, but I didn't know how much longer I could keep it up.
I was hungry, but I didn't want any fruits or bread or water. I wanted meat. Flesh. Uncooked and raw and bloody. But I wasn't going to let myself do that. Sometimes I wondered why I even bothered anymore. I could always just leave and get the change over with, but a part of me was scared of the potential results of that decision. I needed to be taken far away and released if they didn't just want to put me down, which I was contemplating them doing.
I hear the door open and I see Rose peek through the opening of the door. I wave to her.
"Hunter..." She says as she walks over and sits next to me, she puts her arm behind my back. "I heard you yell, are you okay?"
I wave my hand and lean back saying, "Yeah, I'm fine. Just another nightmare."
She looks at me worryingly and says, "I wish you didn't have to have so many nightmares all the time."
I look at her and say, "I wish I hadn't gotten infected."
"Don't we all?" She says. "But even with the infection, we have to play with what we are dealt."
"Until it destroys us." I say.
"... I wish you weren't so depressed over this, Hunter." She says sadly.
"And how can I not be depressed?" I say, "My life as I know it is ending. And I'm going to be a threat to everyone. How can I make something happy out of that?"
Rose is silent and we just sit there for a while. She lays her head against my chest and I comfort her. Soon she falls asleep.
I gently raise her off of me and get up. I needed to go out and do something with my time while I'm awake. And no doubt I'm going to be kicked out of camp again once the sun comes up anyway, so I might as well go out and explore more.
I put on my heavy hooded jacket and find my leather gloves inside one of the pockets. I quickly put them on and brace myself as I step outside. The cold hits me like a bucket of ice water, and I'm instantly awake and energized. I look to my left and I see Alex shoveling snow with Elizabeth. I guess they were up early as well. I decide to go over and say good morning.
"Good Mornin'!" I say cheerfully as I get close to them, I hug both of them in greeting.
"Hey Hunter, how have you been?" Elizabeth asks. "We've been worried about you, we heard more about your mutation from Zoey."
"I-it's fine. Don't worry ab-" I begin, but Alex cuts me off.
Alex puts his hand on my shoulder and I look at him. He says, "-If you ever need us, we are right here for you."
"Thanks..." Is all I can say.
They continue shoveling and I head for the entrance of the camp. I leap up the wall and jump over. I land with a thud on the other side and look around. No infected, good. I begin walking, but I find I have a slight slouch and begin to find walking more difficult. I forcefully straighten my back, and I hear a few bones pop. It was painful, but it did the trick. I could walk normally for the time being.
There was literally nothing out here besides burned piles of corpses, the remains of the pack of Hunters being picked clean by Ravens, Vultures, Maggots, and Infected. And hundreds upon thousands of common infected.
As expected, upon the commons picking up the scents from camp they turned and attacked me, but I quickly dispatched every one. It was almost second nature at this point, I didn't really have to think about it anymore.
"Such useless..."
I slice a commons head off.
"Pathetic..."
I gut 3 infected that try to rush me.
"Creatures!" I say as I slice through a horde of 20 or so.
My anger was rising, and it wouldn't go down. I had to fight even harder to keep me from losing my humanity completely. And as I struggled to control it more and more infected came, and it made me even angrier.
"Stop... AttACkinG... ME!" I say as I slice through another horde like butter.
"I wilL KiLL YoU ALL!" I scream.
I grip my head and try to rub my temples to make it stop, but I can't with the infected attacking. My eyes are pounding in pain.
And after holding it in for so long, I finally snap.
"YOU wANt tO MeSs WItH ME? ILL SHOW YOU ALL WHY YOU SHOULD RUN FROM ME!"
I say as I crouch down. My eyes begin to bleed.
"TIME FOR SOME..."
I get ready to leap.
"CARNAGE!" I yell as I jump up and dive head first into an approaching pack of infected.
I slice through horde after horde. Taking out hundreds of pathetic commons. I grow tired but my body just keeps moving.
'I have to get a hold of myself!' The sane part of me think but is quickly overpowered by my insane half.
I begin to laugh uncontrollably. No infected remained, I just stood in the middle of a mutilated pile of hundreds of mercilessly slaughtered infected.
"AND," I begin.
"AboUT, mY EyeS..." I say as I feel the blood begin flowing from my tear ducts. I wipe some onto my finger and lick it.
"I THinK I'vE EarNEd a RelEASe frOm mY PAiN, NO?" I say as I raise my right hand to my left eye. I look around, expecting and answer. I make my own up.
"THe aNSwEr is YES!" I yell as I laugh and dig my claws and grip around my eyeball.
I'm screaming in pain, but also laughing. I begin to pull my eye out, I feel blood begin to flow. And after a few more excruciating pulls, I forcefully rip my left eye out. My eyelids were ruined, all that remained was a blood soaked hole in my head.
The pain... snapped me out of it. I slowly reach up to my eye, and I begin to panic.
"N-n-no... No! NO!" I scream as I am wracked with pain. "OH my GOD!" I yell. "W-what have I done!" I yell for a bit longer. I fall onto the ground, rolling in pain as I completely soak the snow under me in blood. I quickly take off my backpack and blindly fumble around for a rag or bandage. I grab a rag and immediately bring it up to my eye socket. I apply pressure and take out a bandage and wrap it around it. I'm still screaming in disbelief as I do this.
Once I finish. I am breathing so hard I am risking hyperventilation. I put my bandage against the snow and the coldness of the snow helps my pain immensely. Through my one remaining good eye, I see my other eye resting in the snow. There was absolutely no saving that eye.
"I'm finally losing it." I say as I begin to actually cry from the pain. I continue rolling in a bloody slush of both my blood and the hundreds of dead infected around me. It's all I can do at this point. I was in too much pain to move anymore.
I sit there, unmoving, for about an hour. I hear the heavy footsteps of a search party. I hear my friends calling my name, all I have strength left to do is yell at the top of my lungs.
"That's Hunter!" I hear Zoey yell.
That's all I hear before passing out.
I wake up, and I instantly kill two scientists. I run for it, down a seemingly never ending hall. I slice through a woman in a nurses outfit and rush out a set of doors into camp.
I see a group of children and run for them, a teacher gets in the way and I cut her down instead.
Guards with guns come but I am able to dodge their bullets behind cover and take out one, I take the dead guards gun and I shoot the other guard, I run up and empty the whole magazine in the guards face.
I feel where my missing eye is, and I stop for a second to marvel at it, but then I continue.
I kill everything I see, but I am finally apprehended by Alex.
And then I wake up.
I awaken in a moving bus, sitting upright. My eye socket is properly bandaged. I notice I'm sitting across from Rose. She looked bedridden. Like she had seen something she hadn't.
"R-Rose..." I say weakly.
She looks at me.
"I-I just had the scariest nightmare."
Before she can reply I continue.
"I woke up and... killed... a lot of people. And then... Alex stopped me."
Tears form in her eyes.
"Weird... huh?" I say.
I sense that I have been drugged, I didn't feel right.
Rose just stares at me for the longest time, just staring at my missing eye. Before she finally says:
"Hunter?"
"Hm?" I say, trying to find out where we were.
"That... wasn't a dream. You really... did..." She covers her head with her hands. "that..."
In my stupor I don't realize the gravity of the situation.
"Oh? Well that's... toooo bad. I waaas warning you. You all. About it. Right?" I say groggily.
"Yeah..." She says.
"Whooo all died? I would like to. To know. So I don't killem next time." I lean back and rest my eye.
"Nobody we knew, other survivors. But none of us." She says.
"See? Dats good tooooo. Dint kill you huh? That all that matter. I. Love you. Rose." I could feel myself drool.
I try to lift my arm to wipe the drool away, but I can't move my arms. I look down and see I'm in a straight jacket. I try to free my arms by fumbling them around but it's futile.
"It's no use, Hunter. It's for our safety." I hear Zoey say from behind me.
"That's fine Zoe, I under stand your choices. I can respect that."
"Please don't tell me he's going to be this loopy the whole trip." Rose says.
"The doc said it would wear off about an hour from now." Louis says, checking his watch. "Let's wake him up then." He says.
"Gooood idea Louie..." I say. "I do feel... Like sleeping." I yawn.
"Goodnight everyone." I say as I drift to sleep again.
On a one way trip back to Mercy City.
(A/N): So! How did you like that? Hunter went on a killing spree, ripped his left eye out, went on another killing spree, and is now being brought back to where he was first found. In a straight jacket.
I'm sorry to the people who liked Hunter with two eyes, but this had to happen to better signify his transformation from being who he was to being like every other Hunter out there who wasn't special.
Sorry that this chapter is a little under my words-per-chapter quota, but I couldn't really fit much else in here.
Next chapter is going to be in Rose's perspective, so be ready for that.
And as always, I'll see you in the next chapter. (But first I'm going to go cry over the whole eye thing cause I like Hunter with two eyes ;~;)
