Chapter 21: Take It Slow
Hyde stirred in his bed, feeling exhausted as the sunlight from the window hit his face. He groaned to himself, not wanting to wake up yet. Last night was one of the greatest nights of his life. He had gotten Jackie back. He poured his heart out to her, she listened and she forgave him. He suddenly had a worrisome thought . . . What if it was all a dream? His eyes shot open and he would have shot out of bed just as fast if not for the tiny dark-haired girl asleep on his shoulder. Steven smiled to himself as he watched Jackie continue to sleep. She looked so at peace.
He slowly remembered last night even more. After Jackie hugged him, she asked if they could go somewhere and talk, and Steven suggested his place. They spent the whole night talking; it was almost like they never broke up, like the terrible events with Kelso and Sam never happened. Just as Steven wanted it. We must've fallen asleep, Steven decided. Both he and Jackie were still in their clothes from yesterday. Jackie's jacket lay in the chair next to the bed. Steven couldn't take his eyes off Jackie. After being without her for so long, he was so happy that she was his again.
Steven slowly moved Jackie onto the bed as he stood up. He back away slowly, not wanting to wake her up, as he moved out of the room. A smile was still glued on his face. He brewed a cup of coffee and wondered how long it would be til Jackie would be awake. He tilted his head toward to the bedroom and saw Jackie was still asleep. He knew she would be waking up soon. He wondered what he should say to her. What if she changed her mind? He felt anxious as he waited. Hyde sat down on his couch and let his head hang back. He hated waiting . . . but he would wait patiently for her. (Music Starts) Steven sighed and stood up. Patience was not his strong suit. He brushed a hand through his hair and looked at the bedroom door one more time.
I've been beaten down, I've been kicked around,
But she takes it all for me.
And I lost my faith, in my darkest days,
But she makes me want to believe.
Steven smiled weakly, feeling a joy that he had been missing.
They call her love, love, love, love, love.
They call her love, love, love, love, love.
She is love, and she is all I need.
Steven rubbed his jaw as he thought more about Jackie.
She's all I need.
Well I had my ways, they were all in vain,
But she waited patiently.
It was all the same, all my pride and shame,
And she put me on my feet.
They call her love, love, love, love, love.
They call her love, love, love, love, love.
They call her love, love, love, love, love.
She is love, and she is all I need.
She is love, and she is all I need,
She is love, and she is all I need,
She is love, and she is all I need.
He went to the window and looked outside. People already covered the sidewalks, every business busy as work, and sirens could be heard in the distance. The city seemed to be constantly moving around them. It didn't surprise Steven that this was where Jackie went to escape her pain in Point Place. He remembered her telling him once about how she loved the city constantly moving, constantly going as if nothing bothered anyone. She told him this just after her father was sent to jail and her mother left her behind. She just wanted to forget the lonely childhood she had. Steven sighed to himself again, seeing that he only made things worse, instead of better. For a moment Steven worried the sirens would wake up Jackie. But, she has lived in this city for a good amount of time . . . maybe she's used to it by now.
The sudden knock on the kitchen counter made Steven quickly turn around. He saw Jackie smiling weakly at him. Her jacket on. Hyde worried that she had changed her mind . . .
But Jackie noticed this, "I'm late for a rehearsal." She said to him. "I forgot about it last night. I'm supposed to be rehearsing for the show tonight." Her voice gentle, but still tired. It was almost like she still wanted to sleep. "Could I see you later?" Her smile grew a little more. He was happy that she still wanted to see him.
"Yeah, sure." He said rubbing a hand through his hair. "Maybe we could come back here tonight." He said, his voice trying to appeal to this beautiful girl in front of him.
Jackie bit her lip and looked away yet again. "I kinda want to take to you about that." Hyde's heart seemed to stop beating for a minute. But, Jackie spoke quickly. "I wanna take this slow." Jackie said, her voice seemed worried. As if she was afraid of what Hyde would say. Steven was surprised by her comment. They had already dated before. Not to mention they had had sex before. "It's just, I really want this to work." Jackie said, gesturing to the two of them. "And it feels like in the past things felt rushed, and we never worked out the problems we had." Jackie bit her lip again, but kept going. "I feel like if we take this slow we'll have a better chance." She said, now pausing so he could respond.
"That makes sense." Steven said, even though he understood, he was a little disappointed. After being without Jackie for so long he wanted to hold her again, but this was important to her.
"I just feel like I've grown a lot since moving here and I've seen how important relationships are. I do love you, Steven." She said, blushing a bit, making him smile. "I just need this from you." Her eyes became big and sad. "Please." She asked, pouting her lip.
She knew exactly how to get him to say yes. How slow did she want to take this? Steven shuffled on his feet toward her. "Exactly, how slow do you wanna take this?" They were only an inch apart. Hyde desperately wanted to scoop Jackie up in his arms and show her exactly how much he loved her. Jackie bit her lip yet again. The bite spot looked almost purple now.
Jackie stood on her tip-toes and kissed the edge of Steven's mouth. That simply gesture sent shivers up and down Steven's spine. He had missed her kisses for so long. "I'll see you later." She said, turning toward the door and leaving the loft.
Steven felt stuck in that spot for a moment, but he pushed himself toward the door and stepped out into the hallway. Jackie was already near the end of the hall. "Doll!" Hyde shouted. Jackie spun around to look at him. Still feeling a little weak from her kiss, all he was able to say was "See you tonight." He smiled at her, and she smiled back.
Jackie watched as Steven went back into his loft. She sighed, wishing she could go back in there and do more than a simple kiss. But she decided last night that she and Steven needed to take it slow. It was gonna be better right now. She sighed as she waited for the elevator. Her heavy heart ached for Steven. (Music Starts) The elevator appeared and Jackie stepped on to it, taking another deep breath.
I carry the weight of you in my heavy heart
And the wind is so icy, I am numb
I carry the weight of you heading back to start
With the thousand eyes on me, I stumble on
The elevator doors dinged open, letting Jackie out into the city streets. She slowly walked in the direction of Pistols.
I am tired, I'm growing older
I'm getting weaker every day, yeah
I carry the weight of you
I carry the weight of you
Lay down here
Beside me in the shallow water
Beside me where the sun is shining on us still
Lay down here
Beside me in the hallowed water
Beside me where the silver lining stays until
The sirens' calling
Jackie watched a couple cars pass, all seeming to rush.
We follow the sun down low 'til we hit the night
And you hold me so tightly
It's hard to breathe
Oh
And I'm tired, I'm growing older
I'm getting weaker every day, yeah
We follow the sun down low
We follow the sun down low
A thick icy wind blew into Jackie's face. She wrapped her arms around herself to keep herself warm.
Lay down here
Beside me in the shallow water
Beside me where the sun is shining on us still
Lay down here
Beside me in the hallowed water
Beside me where the silver lining stays until
The sirens' calling
The sirens' calling
Yeah, I'm tired, I'm growing older
I'm getting weaker every day, yeah
I am drowning, and you're stealing every breath
Take me away and just
Lay down here
Beside me in the shallow water
Beside me where the sun is shining on us still
Lay down here
Beside me in the hallowed water
Beside me where the silver lining stays until
The sirens' calling
The sirens' calling
Jackie walked into Pistols, and it seemed they hadn't started rehearsal just yet. She hoped she would go unnoticed, but her family knew her too well. "Well, well, well," Cassidy said. She had been sitting in the audience area with a newspaper over her face. She pushed down the paper and looked at Jackie. "Where have you been, young lady?" Cassidy asked her.
"I was at Steven's." She said, smiling weakly.
"And just what were you doing there?" Cassidy slammed down her paper. "Do you know how worried mother was?" Cassidy said, being her drama queen self.
"Relax, Cas!" Jackie said laughed weakly. "Nothing happened." Jackie said, putting her hands on her friend's shoulders. "We just talked all night and fell asleep."
"Well as a fake parent, I'm glad." She said, crossing her arms. "As a best friend, I'm a little disappointed." She and Jackie laughed.
"Seriously, Cas, we decided to take this slow." Jackie told Cassidy.
"Ok," Cassidy said, nodding and understanding. "How you doing?" She asked.
"I don't know how slow I'll be able to take it." Jackie said. It had taken all her strength not to throw herself into Steven's arms today. She sighed and flopped down in the chair. This might be harder than she thought.
How slow will Jackie and Steven be able to take it this time around? There is much more to come! What do you think will happen?
