The Fox Says Hi, part 2.
As it turned out, when she had said snack, Tooth-san had meant a full three-course meal. Chika didn't mind, she was kind of hungry anyway. She'd asked for a chance to tidy herself up, so North had a yeti guide her to a nice and large bathroom where the kitsune could sort out her messy curls and try to get rid of the wrinkles in her kimono.
Once her auburn hair was pulled up in a simple bun Chika let the big yeti guide her to the dining area where Jack and his family were already sitting at the table, bowls with a salad in front of them.
A plate was already for her across from Jack.
And... right next to the huge prey.
When she sat down on the beautifully crafted wooden chair North spoke up.
"You found everything?" He asked smiling broadly, he continued when Chika nodded in reply. "This is walnut and fruit salad, I hope you like it."
"It sounds great North-san." Chika replied smiling a small somewhat nervous smile. She grabbed her fork and started eating. As she ate the girl did her best not to glance at the ridiculous large prey animal besides her.
It was ironic really, for centuries different kitsune clans had wondered about the last of the pooka and now it turned out her best friend was somehow related to the Easter Bunny.
To think, how many times she and Jack discussed the holiday...
Flashback.
In the year 1834 and Jack and Chika were making the way back to the forest. Once in the forest Chika shapeshifted into her human form.
"Tomorrow is Easter,"Jack started the conversation. "and I was thinking that maybe we should join in the egg hunting fun."
Surprised by this Chika gave Jack her full attention. "Those aren't meant for us, Jack-kun. If we play, and not enough children find eggs they'll…. Lose believe."She trailed of not really knowing how to finish. "If children do not believe in… Hard boiled eggs…."
Jack smirked at his friend's lack of real answer. "See here the kitsune." the spirit of winter chuckled. "a creature of wisdom who doesn't know what the Easter Bunny stands for."
"Oh be silent." The girl huffed, walking just a bit faster, but she wasn't stomping- She wasn't!
Chuckling Jack let the wind carry him up. "We're not gonna effect Easter by joining, Cheeky Fox." The Winter child laughed. "I'll make sure there's a nice layer of snow in the morning so we know where the eggs are thanks to the imprints in the snow."
"It wont be the same if we lack the reward of..." Chika clasped her hands together grinning again. "Sweets!"
Jack rolled his eyes, his friends had way too big of a sweet tooth. "Oh come on! Maybe we'll actually catch a glimpse the Easter Bunny."
Hazel eyes widened just slightly and the kitsune looked away. "It's ojji-san who wonders about the Easter Guardian, not me." She said.
It was too late, Jack knew he had sparked her interest. "It might earn you some points with your dad if you find out some information about Bunny."
Chika snorted. "As if the Kitsunerīdā will ever forgive me for showing you the entrance of the Denn."
"He's still mad about that?"
"And all the other things to." Chika answered nodding gravely. "You know... that time we almost flooded three homes in the denn, the mess you with the beries and nuts in storage, the humans that searched the forest because of those pranks gone wrong and oh that one time-"
"Okay, okay, the Kitsunerīdā isn't my biggest fan. I get it!"
"That is a big understatement, Jack-kun."
Jack smirked. "So we're gonna go egg hunting tomorrow right?"
By now Chika was a few feet ahead of Jack. She stopped walking and looked over her shoulder, her hazel eyes sparkling with mischief. "Ojii-chan will be angry if you're late for training again." With that said she changed back into her fox form and started running in the direction of the Denn.
Jack blinked before calling up the wind. "No fair! False start!"
End Flashback.
And Bunnymund wasn't Jack's only famous relative. The sandman and Santa Claus- His mother was the Tooth Fairy- A queen for goodness sake!
Sure, Chika had always known Jack must have come from good places... A noble, good soul must come from somewhere great... But Jack-kun was royalty for crying out loud! He-
"Stop worrying so much and relax. I already told you, they are really nice people."
Surprised by hearing Jack's voice, Chika glanced up from her food. Jack was still eating, but he had a small soft smile on his pale face. None of the others we reacting, which meant that Jack hadn't actually spoken up, which only meant...
Shoot, she must have left the telepathic link open.
"You sure did, Cheeky Fox."
"Jack-kun, we shouldn't be talking like this right now!"
"Are you seriously worried that I'll think differently of you just because I found out my family has a high rank in our world?"
"...No."
"You do know that almost everyone I hang out with are powerful and or high ranking spirits, you included."
"I do not count, but I guess you're right..." Chika send down the telepathic link feeling some of her tension melt away at Jack's words. "Does Merida-san know? I bet her reaction was fun."
Before Jack could send his reply through the telepathic link his mom spoke up.
"Telepathy."
That got both Chika and Jack's attention and both turned their heads to look at her.
Tooth smiled apologetically. "When Jack told us he was friends with a kitsune I took the liberty of looking your kind of spirit up in our library and I read that kitsune can form telepathic links and I assumed that's what you and Jack were doing. Is that what it was..."
The fairy stopped talking when she saw the mortified look on Jack's face. "Is something wrong, Sweet Tooth?"
Even her fellow guardians were sending her scandalized looks.
Chika herself had look of confusion and amusement on her face. "You..." The kitsune tilted her head a playful grin on her face. "You looked my kind up?" She questioned, a small disbelieving laugh escaping her.
"Yes." Tooth asked not seeing why that was so strange. She wanted to know more about someone her son cared for, that wasn't strange was it?
Bunny snorted, putting his bowl down. "You and North have your own vision of subtlety, dont'cha sheila?" The pooka said grinning as he watched Jack's cheeks turn into a lovely shade of blueberry blue.
"Oh," Tooth's feathers shifted upwards as if finally dawned to the queen, how she must have sounded. "I'm so sorry, that must have sounded so weird. I didn't mean it in a stalk-"
"Don't apologize Tooth-san." The grin on her face made it clear that Chika wasn't just dismissing Tooth's apology to be polite. "I would be a hypocrite if I would be bothered by someone's curiosity." Her smile gave everyone a full display of her-
"You have really adorable teeth." Tooth complimented.
They all expected the girl to at least be weirded out by that kind of compliment.
Instead Chika just looked at Jack and exclaimed "So that's where you get it from!"
At that everyone minus herself, Jack and the Tooth Fairy burst into laughter, the Sandman almost fell over with silent laughter.
"Lil' Jackie has the same preference as his momma! Why ain't I surprised?" Bunnymund managed to say between his laughter while hitting the wooden table with his fist.
Jack Frost himself was fighting the urge to just let it snow indoors so he could bury himself in a large pile of snow. "Bunny..." The winter teen moaned palming his forehead.
"Just teasing ya mate." Bunnymund said with a dismissive wave of his paw. He looked at Chika, noticing that she seemed to shrink back from him. Inwardly the pooka winced as he realised how intimidating they must seem right now.
Right on time six yeti entered the room to gather the salad bowls and bring in the next course.
"Hey, Chika?"
Unconsciously straightening up Chika raised an eyebrow. "Yes, Bunnymund-san?"
"North mentioned Jack took a snowglobe to see ya today, so where did he take ya?"
"Russia." Chika paused when to look down at the meal put in front of her. Chicken and rice. Perfect! She nodded her head in thanks at the yeti who put her plate down. "Jack-kun showed me around."
"Russia?" North echoed, curious as to why Jack would take his crush to his homeland.
Jack nodded, his mouth full with rice. "We went to see the ice skaters at the olympics."
"And prank those men who think they understand justice." Chika added before calmly starting to eat her food. It tasted wonderful and put her grandfather's cooking to shame.
Not that beating her grandfather's cooking really took great effort, but still...
Sandy frowned deeply and formed a question mark above his head.
"No worries, Sandy." Jack said sounding far too innocent for all the adult's liking. "Just some tricky illusions."
"And some well placed ice." Chika added smiling overly sweetly. "All those problems during one speech..." She covered her mouth to smother a giggle that wanted to escape her. "Imagine that."
Jack snickered quietly before launching into an explanation about how he and Chika pranked the Russian president, Chika chiming when Jack forgot to mention something. By the time he finished everyone was almost finished with the main course.
"You do that a lot?" Tooth asked before taking a small sip from her drink. "Play pranks together?"
"It'd be a waste of talent if we didn't." Jack answered, leaning backwards in his chair causing it to lean on its' hind legs.
Chika shot Jack a look that clearly said that she didn't appreciate him showing acrobatic skills while at the dinner table, but after a moment she just shook her head, a fond smile on her face. "Jack-kun and I actually met when we hijacked each other's pranks by accident." She explained looking back at Tooth. "Afterwards it became..." The kitsune pursed her lips, trying to find the right word. "Tradition." And things changed after that.
Things were still changing...
Soon another group of yetis came to take away their empty plates and another set of yetis came in bringing dessert.
"Carrot cake!" Bunnymund and Chika cheered at the same time surprising each other.
It didn't take long for lemon frosted carrot cake to be sliced and everyone to get their own piece. Chika only said a loud "thanks" before she quickly dug in.
It really took all of North and Sandy's self-control not to burst into laughter, when Jack and Tooth sulked while watching Chika happily eat the sweet treat.
Good thing Bunny was enjoying the cake himself to or he would have definitely called Jack out on it.
After a short moment Jack rolled his blue-eyes, and started eating the cake also, leaving his mom with a somewhat annoyed pout on her face.
Letting out a warm laugh, North put his large beefy hand on his wife's petite shoulder, successfully gaining her attention. Tooth met North's large eyes and smiled. Tooth shouldn't be sulking when they'd just met the girl their son had feelings for.
Besides after dessert Chika would get a grand tour around the workshop and later Tooth would show her how Jack's teeth were so white.
The fairy just hoped she still had those pictures of Jack when he was four and brushing his stuffed bunny's teeth...
Author: I think I'll also write a part 3 to this meeting at some point, but I'll leave it at this for now.
