Derek remained at Meredith's bed side, holding tightly onto her hand not ever wanting to let go of her again. He already nearly lost her once and there was no way he would ever lose her again. Bailey had gone to get him, to tell him the good news about the love of his life. He knew instantly that she had come back for him. There was no way he was letting her go again.
As he gripped her hand he placed his forehead onto both of their entwined hands, praying to God that she woke up soon. Meredith's skin was warm, finally, pinking up as each minute passed by. His tears slowly slid down his pale cheeks.
He softly pressed his warm lips onto her hand. His blood shot eyes glanced up into Meredith's sparkling green ones. She was finally awake. A small smile appeared from the corners of Derek's mouth. He slowly got up from his chair and leant over Meredith placing a soft kiss on her lips.
"Hi." Derek pulled away and ran his hand through her nearly dry blonde locks.
"Hi." Meredith smiled at Derek's touch. She was happy to be in his arms again. She reached over and placed her hand, on top of her flat belly, just like before when she woke up in the deserted room with Denny and Dylan. Sadness suddenly covered her face as she felt how empty her stomach was.
Derek let his grip go off Meredith's hand and placed it on top of her other hand that was resting on her belly. He stared into her watering eyes as tears began to fall down his cheeks.
"Derek." Meredith whispered as she stared into his ocean blue eyes. She lifted her arm up and placed her hand against Derek's cheek, wiping his tears with her thumb.
"Meredith." The tears began to flow more quickly down his face. Meredith moved her hand behind his head, stroking her fingers through his thick black curls while she pulled his head down placing her lips against his. She could taste the salty tears that had fallen from Derek's eyes on his lips.
She pulled back and stared longingly into Derek's eyes.
"I love you, you know that right?" Meredith scooted over on her hospital bed with all her might, allowing Derek to join her.
He slowly lay down on the bed facing Meredith, while she lay on her back with her eyes gazing up at the ceiling. Derek placed his head under Meredith's chin, wrapping his arm around her waist. Meredith placed her hand behind Derek's head entwining her fingers in his thick hair. His shoulders shook as he cried into her chest. Tears slowly fell down from Meredith's eyes landing on the pillow. She waited for Derek to calm down.
Something stirred Meredith from her sleep. She felt her arm being pulled about. As she looked up she saw Cristina standing there taking out her IV.
"Sorry, I didn't want to wake you, but I needed to take this out." Cristina whispered as she saw Meredith's bloodshot eyes glaring up at her. "Someone looks tired."
They both stared down at Derek's sleeping body. He hadn't moved much, except he had placed his leg over Meredith's.
"Yeah, he really hasn't been sleeping." Meredith replied quietly.
"I'll leave you two alone." Cristina slowly slipped off her surgical gloves and walked out of Meredith's private hospital room, quietly closing the door behind her. However, Derek being a light sleeper slowly opened his eyes and lifted his head up from Meredith's chest.
"Hey." Meredith smiled as she met Derek's blue eyes that had suddenly woken up after his long nap.
"Hey." Derek said quietly as he stared into Meredith's eyes.
At that moment their gaze was interrupted by the door opening. They watched as the large figure stepped inside and shut the door behind him.
"Chief?" Derek questioned as his boss walked over to the couple. "How is everything?"
"Er..Meredith." Richard stared into the eyes of his lover's daughter. "It's your mother; she passed away a few hours ago. I was going to tell you sooner, but you weren't awake."
A tear fell down Meredith's cheek remembering that last moment she had with her mother.
"What about Coco?" As she said her daughter's name, tears streamed down her rosy cheeks. "Please, just tell me, I can take it."
"Richard?" Derek's heart began to pound knowing that his daughter might be in a whole lot of trouble.
"The surgery went well, Burke done a great job." He paused as he walked over towards the bed.
"But?" Derek interrupted.
"But she's on life support. We don't know if she's going to wake up. She's been through a lot. I just want you to prepare yourselves."
Tears flowed down Meredith's face, she brought her hand up to her face and wiped under her eyes as she begun to sniffle. Derek placed his hand behind Meredith's head and pulled her to his chest. Lone tears fell from Derek's eyes, he was surprised that he had anything left to fall from them.
"Can we see her?" Derek asked as a lump formed in his throat.
"Of course, I'll go and get a wheel chair for Meredith. I'll be back in a bit." Richard walked out of the room, leaving Meredith curled up against Derek's body, crying over her little girl.
Richard pushed Meredith into the NICU with Derek by her side, holding onto her hand. They watched as Addison placed their daughter's chart back into the holder next to her incubator. Addison glanced over at the two parents and gave them a sympathetic smile, before her and Richard slipped out of the room, leaving the new parents to their beautiful baby girl.
Derek reluctantly let go of Meredith's hand and went behind the wheelchair and pushed her closer to their baby. Meredith's eyes watered as they lay upon her daughter.
"Hi, hi baby girl." A huge smile formed on Meredith's face. Derek watched as his girlfriend's face lit up as she touched their baby's hand. "Hey."
Meredith's eyes watered as she stared down at her daughter. She stroked her baby's soft skin. Derek bent down and placed a warm kiss on top of Meredith's honey blond hair. He grabbed a chair from a nearby incubator where the previous parents had come to visit and sat down next to Meredith, wrapping one arm around her and his other hand on his daughter. They both stared at her as they watched her chest raise and fall from the vent.
"You know, I had this fantasy that you and I were going to bring her home and we'll get out of the house and leave George and Izzie with the keys and we'll find our own place. She'll have her own room, filled with her princess toys and pink wallpaper and you and I will be happy living in our master suite. You know?" Meredith looked up from her baby and looked into Derek's saddened eyes.
"We will take her home." Derek looked back at Meredith. Her eyes too were filled with tears. "Meredith."
"Derek." Tears began to fall down her cheeks; no matter how hard she tried Meredith couldn't stop them. "What if we don't?"
Derek pulled Meredith to his chest. She took her hand out of Coco's incubator and gripped onto Derek's sweater. He waited for her to calm down, before he lifted her chin and looked deep into her eyes. They were both hurting; they could see it in each other's eyes.
"I'm sorry." Meredith whispered as she wiped a lone tear from beneath her eyes.
"No, I'm sorry." Derek said as he placed a kiss on the side of her head.
They must have fallen asleep in each other's arms again as they both woke up to the sound of Addison fiddling around with Coco's chart.
"Everything alright?" Derek asked as he looked up at his ex-wife.
"Erm, yeah, just checking on her that's all." Addison put her stethoscope in her ears and placed it on the baby's chest. Her face saddened as she shook her head.
"There's still no chest sounds, is there?" Meredith asked as she held on to Derek's hand.
"I'm sorry, Meredith." Addison looked down at the woman who took her husband away. She didn't hold a grudge anymore. Instead Addison felt pain, pain in the that she might not be able to save Meredith and Derek's baby. "I know you don't want to think about something like this right now, but I think you should start thinking about options. About whether having her on life support is something you really want for her. I'm not trying to rush you, take your time. But you just need to know, you don't know what kind of pain she's in."
Addison walked out of the room leaving Meredith and Derek in shock, staring into each other's eyes.
Derek eventually broke the silence a couple of minutes later.
"She's right. We need to do something."
They placed their foreheads together as tears streamed down both of their cheeks.
