"Are you ready to tell me what I need to know Damon?"
"Give me the cure first." he coughed with effort.
"What was written in the paper that you gave Tatia?" Jeremy asked trying to remember as well what his confusing dreams had told him so far.
Damon insisted. "I'm not saying a word."
"Then you are dying." April easily left him with no option.
"This is so much bigger than any of us, you know?" Damon rested his head against the wall.
April looked at the vampire in pain. "Please tell me what I need to know Damon. Tatia was trying to stop Niklaus from breaking the curse..."
Damon laughed painfully. "She never meant to stop it, it was all smoke and mirrors."
"You are hallucinating." April assumed.
"No… I'm slowly embracing my death instead." he closed his eyes.
Jeremy looked at April wondering if she was really going to let him die but April was lost in her thoughts.
"I heard of many stories while I stayed with the tribes and the old shamans used to talk about a God that the dark witches worshipped in the beginning of everything."
"Now you are getting somewhere..." Damon faced her. "Tatia uses Expression. It's not even dark magic, she pulls her energy from the other side where the dead linger and she has been doing it since she was human. All that she wanted with Klaus was to make hybrids so that she could sacrifice them and awake her master."
April gulped down. "But they have been turning them for so long now."
"She tried every eclipse but something was always missing, and believe me when I say that she tried everything, she killed an entire pack on a mystical place and when it didn't work she framed it on Rebekah. With the other witch away, she was able to focus on her research and used the primal Grimoires that Elijah collected over the years. She also found the old manuscript from the witch that imprisoned the dark God that she had to wake but still… something was missing." he looked at Jeremy.
"The keeper didn't write all of it as a safety key." Jeremy finally made sense of his strange dreams.
"You have been dreaming of her since you were born Gilbert. I think you descend from Qetsiyah."
"Who?" Jeremy asked but looking at April.
The girl released her werewolf fangs and bit into her wrist, she neared Damon and forced him to drink from her.
"You are the cure?" he hoarsely asked her.
"I descend from the Original Pack, of course that my blood heals." she replied with an inching towards Damon. "What did Tatia promised you in exchange for your help?"
"She said that he would turn me human." Damon explained with a tired smile and closed his eyes.
April stood up clasping her hands nervous, they were probably too late already.
"How do I look?" Caroline asked Bonnie while gliding her hands across the tight dress.
"Sizzling." Bonnie answered keeping her phone away after refusing another call from Kol.
Caroline slumped her shoulders and unzipped the dress. "I don't want to look too hot."
Bonnie smiled while Caroline slipped into a white dress that was a little longer.
"And now?" Caroline opened her hands.
"You look cute."
Caroline immediately stripped with a grumble which made Bonnie laugh.
"Are you trying to look good or not?"
"I don't want to look too seductive but I don't want to look like a teenager on her first date either."
Bonnie was serious, she was still processing Caroline having dinner plans with Klaus.
"He doesn't deserve hot but I still want to look remotely interesting." Caroline tried a pink dress with a bow in the back that she tried to reach.
Bonnie took the satin pieces and made a perfect bow for her. "So you want to slightly impress him."
Caroline looked at the mirror making sure that the front of the dress was tight around her chest. "I'm still mad at him because he slept with someone else."
Bonnie looked slowly at her friend. "He wasn't with you at the time, well, he's still not with you... I think." she cocked an eyebrow.
"Technically we have not been together together but it's the principal behind it all." Caroline claimed.
"I get that and I would be defensive as well but accepting to go out with him is sort of forgiving him."
"No it's not." Caroline timidly stated. "I am pissed and I expect him to work hard to prove that he deserves a second chance."
Bonnie rested her chin on top of Caroline's shoulder with a peeking glance at the mirror. "You sound in love Care."
Caroline softly touched her dress that loosened up into a wide skirt bellow the tight waist, it only reached her knees and she looked like a princess. "I don't want to give up on him. I get why he acts this way and even if it's all sorts of wrong, he doesn't know better Bonnie. There is no good or bad for him so he has no filter and when he snaps it's always in a very hostile way."
"I hope that he knows how lucky he is to have a second chance." Bonnie checked her buzzing phone again.
"It will be his last chance." Caroline promised with a deep breath and then smiled at Bonnie. "Aren't you going to tell me what happened with Kol?"
Bonnie looked up from another call that she was ignoring. "I don't even know… my feelings are all over the place with this new vampire thing and I still can't handle all of it. Most of the time I want to rip his clothes off and have crazy sex with him but then he keeps surprising me with stuff that he hides from me and I want to break his arms and legs instead."
Caroline widened her eyes playfully. "So are you changing your Facebook status to Intense?"
Bonnie looked for a jacket smiling. "Have you updated yours yet?"
Caroline nodded with a small shrug. "Yes, to Complicated."
Bonnie showed her a really cool white leather jacket that made Caroline squeal.
"The truth is that even when I'm mad at him for scheming behind my back and for keeping me away from my friends, I can't deny that Kol keeps me focused on what matters the most and I still feel human although I have the ability to whoosh now."
Caroline projected a sly smile. "I sense the L word on its way."
"I sense sex for you tonight." Bonnie countered.
Caroline shook her head. "There won't even be a kiss. I need to get the image of that… peasant and her idiotic happy smile out of my head before I can even think of allowing Klaus to touch me."
Bonnie sighed. "Bitchy Caroline… I have missed you, where have you been?"
"Trying to figure out the mind of a very ancient and complex creature."
"Well I missed you, just like I miss your hair."
"I kind of like it… it's a new skin." she turned to face the full size mirror inside of the store. "And my new me has Klaus' credit card."
"You are buying everything that you tried so far, aren't you?"
"He has fans that he likes to please, I have a closet to fill." she moved next to the shoe area.
Bonnie laughed and finally gave in, returning Kol's missed calls.
Henrik left Kol speaking on the phone outside and came inside of the house smiling when he saw his sister. "Everyone is here now, we are only missing Elijah for the rendezvous."
"I spoke to him today, he says that he has some thinking to do alone." Rebekah immediately messed Henrik's hair.
Annoyed he wriggled his way away from her and went to search for Klaus, on the way he found Katherine on the hallway and tried to keep his steady route when with a blur she cornered him against the wall.
"Were you really going to ignore me?" she asked with a pout.
"That was sort of my intention…" he pointed down the hallway. "Nik is waiting for me."
"Let him wait… I have to thank you first." With a single motion she outlined his body.
Henrik melted against the wall. "Why?" he raised an eyebrow. "How?"
Katherine ran a fingernail up his neck until she found his lips, she played with his bottom lip while looking at him with an inaudible whimper. "You saved Tatia thinking that she was me…" she gave him a sweet look. "That made me melt inside..." she released a low purr. "In all the right places."
Henrik wanted to speak up but there were no words that would make any sense of what she provoked just now, he was rather confused whilst aroused.
There was the sound of steps approaching and they turned their heads at the same time.
Stefan slowed his pace. "I was trying to find my way back to the living room."
Katherine looked back at Henrik with a sulk while Stefan rushed by them.
"He's hot." she said and then smiled in that sly way of hers. "But there's something about you Henrik that makes my blood rush and my heart thump."
"Don't be silly." Henrik cleared his throat. "Your heart is still."
"Unless you are around." She tapped his chest with a rhythmic finger. "Thump… thump… thump…" She clicked the words with a playful click of her tongue.
"Just now you found Stefan hot, remember? So you like other men as well and you should pursue those because I'm very unhot…" he stumbled on his English.
She grabbed the lapels of his jacket with a growl. "Henrik!"
He gulped down. "Kat."
"Why are you so endlessly adorable?"
Henrik crumbled his lips. "Why are you so traitorous?"
Her joyous smile faded and Katherine showed bluntly how much she wasn't expecting the question, she backed away freeing Henrik from her predator ways almost on the spot. "That's such an odd question coming from you."
"It's true that we took you and Tatia into our home and that I grew up around you Kat but I don't know you. You are always changing your name and your accent but your ways never change, you are constantly trying to use a simple look or word as leverage and you are elusive."
"I'm your Kat…" she muttered disenchanted before turning away.
Henrik motioned to speak but held back at the last second.
Caroline's hand glided along the pink fabric of her dress, she pushed back her stomach by having a large intake of air, she was foolishly nervous and made sure that she looked good again by checking herself while waiting for him in the porch.
She frowned with this silly wrinkle that she found and stubbornly tried to fix it by stretching the silk over and over, she wasn't happy having a little dent in her attire tonight.
"You are perfect Caroline." he said closing the front door behind them.
Caroline shook her dress one last time before looking at him. "Thank you." she smiled enjoying the dark olive-green shirt that he had chosen, it outlined his chest very well.
It was a hot night like every other night in Louisiana and Klaus could admire Caroline under a star-filled sky for at least another hour before forcing his brain to advance but he was here to start a patch between them so he offered her his arm. "Shall we go have dinner?"
Caroline laced her hand around his firm arm and walked down the steps of the front porch shaken. "Here we go..." she slowly acknowledged.
The ride to the restaurant was short and he opened her door without offering his arm this time and they crossed the street avoiding the awkward glances at each other, the ride had been silent and somewhat tense already.
He held the door of the restaurant for her and she smiled stepping inside of a crowded place.
A bulky man nodded as soon as he saw Klaus and quickly accompanied them to another floor without much conversation, the restaurant was a typical New Orleans house turned into a fancy diner place and Caroline was sure that it had a long list of reservations but she gazed at Klaus when the man opened the balcony door for them and she noticed that there was only a table in the terrace.
Once they were left alone Klaus pulled a chair for her.
She sat down with a glare. "I should have suspected that you would try to impress me with extravagant ideas."
"Ummm…" he frowned gravely. "Should I cancel the private string quartet then?"
Caroline dropped her clutch on the table with a thud and sighed in a manner that conveyed just how unimpressed she was thus far.
Grumpily Klaus took his seat. "I merely wanted a fair chance to acquit myself and privacy to do so."
A waiter joined them with a bottle of wine that he offered Caroline, she declined politely choosing to drink water instead.
Klaus was spiked by her choice. "You would have liked the wine if you tried it."
"I'll be in full control of my actions tonight." she had a sip from her water. "And yours."
He stirred his beverage so that he could enjoy its fragrance. "In such dim ways you regard me."
Caroline opened the napkin across her lap. "You can't blame me Klaus."
He tensed his face but he was a fool to expect less. "My mistakes are kept very close to my heart."
"And I'm surprised that you still know where it is." she quickly shot back.
"I just perceived how fun tonight will be." he quietly left his glass on the table.
Caroline smiled at their waiter as he came in with the menus. "I'm having a lovely time."
After choosing the entrée the silence returned between them, Caroline took the chance to enjoy the magnificent view that they had over the city.
"There's something mystical about this city." he broke the stillness with caution.
"Why is it so special? Everyone seems fascinated by NOLA." she looked away from the city covered in different lights and landed her blue pearls on his.
He found her cruel by using such a definition when he found her magnificent. "It's probably where Kol spent most of his last century and by convenience we all somehow always reunited here. The witches followed Kol like birds migrating towards the South and naturally they created a certain environment that you cannot find elsewhere, the entire city is driven by magic, energy that flows from the soil to the sky and of course that one cannot separate power from excitement so there's a somewhat sexual feel in the atmosphere by addition."
Caroline drank her water ticked off, the city was probably swarming with his fans.
Unable to read her mind but obviously understanding that she was upset by something that he inadvertently said Klaus had the rest of his glass of wine without uttering another word.
They were half-way through the main course when he finally took action. "Why did you call me Caroline? You were set on staying away from me and although we are sharing a table you're still unreachable."
Caroline cleaned her mouth with the napkin slowly, she wasn't in a hurry to answer him. "I called you, I didn't tell you to fly in immediately and I didn't tell you that I was over what you did."
Klaus tapped the silver on the table. "Nonetheless judging by your previous angry words I was not expecting a courtship proposal."
She looked into his eyes knowing that she couldn't linger in them. "I found your collection of love letters."
Klaus looked down on the table. "I haven't collected them in a very long time."
She found his simplicity heart-stopping. "What made you stop?"
"At some point they became just words engraved on paper, nothing more than that and I couldn't connect to those facts that they described anymore so they became meaningless and ultimately a reminder that I was alone."
"How can a man be surrounded by such a big family and by a vast number of hybrids and werewolves and still feel alone?"
Her voice accused the sweetness that he was becoming addicted to and he smiled. "There's no company in darkness Caroline." he searched for the eyes that haunted him when she was away. "In the end we are all left utterly and infinitely alone."
"Why didn't you turn me into a hybrid Klaus?" she pressed on trying to keep her emotions anything but afloat.
"You asked me to stop seeing you as a number on a list, why are you so troubled that I complied and gave a name along with a meaning to that number?"
"I'm not upset, I just want answers."
Her eyes sparkled with a hope that he didn't want to give her only to disappoint her later so he kept the things that he couldn't let out of his reach unsaid.
When he went silent again, she pulled back her chair and left the table.
Klaus expected her to be home already when he left the restaurant but instead found her sitting on a bench near his car, he sat next to her contemplating if he would ever predict any of her actions right.
"During the eclipse, you said that I had too much power already… what was that about?" she eyed him hoping for the smallest crack on his guard.
The battle inside of him was big and intense but he didn't want to see her walk away from him again. "You think that you are doomed Caroline, that you made Damon feel and that it then backfired on you. You even see yourself as someone who got in the way of Stefan and Rebekah or that Bonnie died as a repercussion directly linked to your existence… these are all things that you wrote in your journal and that I have read." He looked at her for the rest. "You also blame yourself in some way for my actions."
"You forgot that I pushed Tyler away because I couldn't give him what he needed and that my mother rejected me because of what I am." her voice naturally faltered.
"Your mother was probably compelled, my guess lies with Damon. And Tyler had more than enough, he was unworthy to begin with." He didn't hide his dislike for the boy.
"Ironic time to be jealous." Caroline mused without a smile.
"I simply wanted to conclude that in any way you can be responsible for our actions, we all chose to hurt you in different ways but on our own terms and culpability."
Wordless she stood up and started walking, when he didn't follow her she turned and smiled at him. "I'm waiting for your company Nik."
Klaus had a small smile, he could know who she was by reading her life but not even that rewarded him with a foretelling ability when it came to Caroline
It was a quiet walk to the French Quarter although the streets were filled with tourists and locals blending in with grace.
Caroline was the first to speak. "So now that you know about my life and my intimate rambles, do I get the same sympathy?"
"The true shame between us is that we started a story by the epilogue."
Caroline inched closer to him as they walked side by side and warmly spoke without looking at him. "Our story is just beginning."
His smile grew.
They stopped when Caroline found a street band playing in the square, her eyes were sparkling in an unknown way to him and he searched for what her eyes were capturing, it was then that a strange wave of sadness came over him, the few couples dancing to the music were a showcase of something that he didn't know how to give her.
"If I had turned you…" Klaus kept his voice low. "I would have sired you Caroline…"
She faced him waiting for him to go on but Klaus turned around and left.
Neither spoke to each other on the way back to the house and she tried her best to smile happy at Stefan when she saw him but after a quick hug she excused herself claiming that she was tired.
In all honesty as she headed down the corridor she had an immense lack of energy and it wasn't easy to find Klaus surprisingly waiting for her inside of the guest room. "I'm tired Klaus and it's obvious that this night has run its course." she held the door for him.
Confronting her wish he simply closed the door while remaining inside of the bedroom. "There has to be something that we can savage from it."
Sadly she eyed him. "I look at you and I see nothing, there is nothing that I could hold on to Nik and this entire night was nothing but a stupid push and pull. I need more if you think that I'm going to keep trying when I should have gave up on you a long time ago. Tell me why you didn't do the one thing that I asked you to."
Klaus cradled her face. "I wouldn't sustain the thought that maybe your feelings came from a sire bond."
"My feelings? What do you know about those? I'm pretty sure that I didn't write them all down."
"You wrote about your despair and I wanted to stay immune to it, as much as I wanted to ignore that I hurt you just so I could feel something. I knew what I was doing and I wanted to feel the pain and to give you a reason to hate me." he harshly admitted.
"We're stuck in a rout." She pulled his hands down from her face.
"I'm going to let you rest." he whispered but without moving.
"Don't let this night end like this."
"You've set the tone to it." he coldly said.
Caroline motioned to turn away but he stopped her by placing a hand on her waist and walking towards the wall, she moved with him and ended up sheeted between his body and the wall.
"I don't know how to cope with all of this." he said in a painful gush, he grazed her chin and then her neck, spoiling himself with her warmth. "It's a fire that confounds and consumes ever since I met you."
Caroline melted against his touch, her body moved against his and for a perfect moment they both closed their eyes feeling the same immeasurable heat blissfully covering them.
She tilted her head to better enjoy his touch and slowly opened her eyes. "It's called love."
He leaned over brushing his lips across her cheek and inhaled her scent. "Show me Caroline." Klaus rested his forehead against her skin. "Show me how not to wreck this."
She glided her arms around him and hid inside of a hug that he took his time to form. "You need to trust me."
It was like asking the world but Klaus didn't pull away so that had to mean something at last.
"Grams?" Bonnie called as she arrived home..
"I'm in here baby." Sheila said from the kitchen, she was closing a drawer full of candles and smiled at Bonnie when the other came into sight.
"Hey." Bonnie smiled a bit apprehensive but eased up as soon as Sheila opened her arms and warmly greeted her with a hug.
It was a surprising gesture but very well received by Bonnie.
Sheila stroked Bonnie's long hair and then gently pulled back so that she could see her face. "You are so beautiful."
"You are kind of scaring me Grams." Bonnie uneasily admitted..
"I don't know why, I love you and you will always be my baby girl."
"For eternity now." Bonnie smirked.
Sheila laughed and took her hand into hers in a peaceful manner. "Where is your… boyfriend?"
Bonnie made an awkward expression due to the reference. "He had some family issues to deal with tonight."
"I see. Well, maybe you could ask him to come over for dinner tomorrow night."
"Now I'm really scared." Bonnie said serious.
Sheila shook her head and leaned over to kiss Bonnie's forehead gently. "Don't be, I only realized that I have to get used to your choices and that there's no point in opposing Kol so much when you clearly are so in love with him."
"Thanks Grams." Bonnie beamed before leaving to her bedroom to call Kol.
Sheila opened the drawer again and took a candle out, she tried again to set it on fire but nothing happened, her magic was gone.
"Caroline?" the thick voice called next to her ear.
She woke from her deep sleep confused. "Am I dreaming?" she mumbled against her pillow.
In the dark Klaus smiled while running his knuckles softly along the lines of her cheek. "No love, I need to speak to you and it couldn't wait."
She sat up and gave a dim light to the talk by switching on the light in the nightstand. "I sense trouble."
"I'm leaving tomorrow.".
Caroline conveyed her worry by making a very thin line with her lips. "Are you shutting me down again?"
He had a slight shake of his head. "My hybrids caught Tatia's trail, she's in Moscow."
"You're going to Russia now?" she was sad that after the small breakthrough between them, she was forced to let him go.
"I'm taking Lexi and her pack with me, you will be safe with Stefan and Rebekah." he replied serious.
She nodded. "Do you have many groupies in Russia?"
"Groupies?" he asked with a squint.
"Never mind…" she muttered looking away from him discouraged.
"Will you be traveling with me or coming with Rebekah later?" he asked casually.
Caroline jolted her eyes at him. "What?"
His lips parted with a big smile. "I rather have your company sweetheart but I understand if you want to travel with your friend and my sister instead."
"Seriously? You are taking me to Russia with you?" she asked with a jittery laughter.
"It's very cold this time of the year so you will need a new credit card for a winter closet." He teased her about her shopping spree.
Caroline blushed. "I'm not apologizing, I was mad at you."
"I could tell by the amount of shoes."
She laughed filling the room with a sweet sound. "Now I need boots."
"Maybe one of those adorable fur hats as well." he easily imagined her in one.
Caroline unconsciously played with the long sleeve of his Henley and smiled while getting just that bit lost in the amazing blue of his eyes, Klaus returned the intense stare with the weak light dancing between them.
"I'd love to see my white wolf playing in the snow." he confessed.
Her heart began to race. "I haven't shifted since you broke the curse."
"It will happen when the right time arrives."
"No pressure?" she whispered.
"On your own tempo Caroline."
"I'm not ready Nik… not yet." She encompassed all that brewed inside of her.
"I know that you need time to mend the wounds that I've caused."
Her breath and smile came out relieved and she closed the space between them by pulling him down on the bed with her.
Klaus kissed her as soon as her lips were at his reach and Caroline pushed her fingers through his curls while answering a deep kiss that she allowed by opening her lips for him.
He made the kiss last, grateful that he had another chance with her after his erratic behavior, he ran his tongue over hers swiftly and moaned because he felt her hand moving under his shirt.
He kissed her lips lovingly once their tongues broke away from one another.
"I still haven't forgiven you." she whispered before stroking the back of his neck and engaging in another kiss.
Tatia touched her crystal satisfied about all the power inside of it, Kol almost ruined everything with his vexatious infatuation with the young Bennett witch but her death had come in handy after all, it was enough to spike the old Bennett in order to help her.
She closed her hand around the crystal and stepped over the two bodies, some random werewolf that she caught and a human that she used as a sacrifice, now he needed blood from a vampire and she used hers.
Tatia hovered her wrist over the iron mask and when the blood started to drop in she placed the crystal over his desiccated heart. "The power of a werewolf, a human and a coven to give you life again, my Lord." she whispered proud of all the hard work that paved her way to this glorious day.
The day that she was awakening Silas.
