Chapter 21
I own only this story.
They turned into Maura's neighborhood slowly, not wanting to disturb the neighbors. After Jane gave her warning to the vampire that she then shot, the rest of the trip had been uneventful. Jane busied herself reloading her magazine and adding an apparatus to the side of the gun. She popped the magazine back into it and chambered a round, feeling that things were about to get interesting.
And then they did.
Suddenly, the car was bombarded by bodies! Maura, caught off guard, gasped, flooring the Benz again as the hoard began to pummel and punch the windows.
"Dammit!" Jane said, "They're getting more and more stealthy, little fuckers! I didn't even hear them until they were on us!"
She focused on the road. "How far to your house, Maura!"
"Half a mile or so!" She answered swerving the car side to side, losing a few of the vampires, but still four or five remained. The cabin of the car was loud with their banging, the rear window beginning to crack. "Vince! Use the flashlight!" Maura yelled, never taking her eyes off the road.
He already had it turned on and was sweeping the rear windshield and sunroof, sending the vampires that were attached at those points howling off the car. Jane lowered her window slightly, just enough to point the barrel through and fired into a vampire's head that was directly in front of her.
"Shit! His gang's gotten bigger since the last time we scuffled!" Jane said to Korsak, who was still sweeping the flashlight around the cabin.
"Yep!" Korsak agreed.
She rolled the window down all the way and climbed out again, firing shots rapidly, hitting every target cleanly. Vampires were falling left and right, but were soon replaced by more. One jumped onto her back and she turned the gun around and fired into its head, shaking the body off as it turned into ashes.
"How far, Maura?!" Jane yelled, the gun discharging the spent casings into the added apparatus, collecting them. She was counting her rounds in her head. "I've only got five left in this magazine!"
"Three more houses down!" Maura yelled back, still swerving from side to side. "Hang on!"
Jane grabbed the door frame as Maura floored the high performance sedan, shooting the car forward. She jammed her foot on the emergency brake as she turned the wheel, sending the car into a tight spin, Jane holding on firmly, still firing at the remaining parasites. The doctor hit the accelerator, automatically releasing the brake and turned the wheel as far as it would go, turning the car in small circles, commonly known as donuts, the tires smoking. Jane climbed back into the cabin, checking that the small pistol was still in its place in her waistband, as the last of the vampires were thrown from the car with the centrifugal force. Maura straightened the car out and they shot forward as she punched the button that opened her garage door, knowing the range of the remote.
The door slowly made its way up its track as they pulled into her driveway at thirty miles per hour, the bottom of the car scraping concrete, sending sparks flying as they hit the small curb leading into her driveway.
"We're not going to make it!" Korsak bellowed from the backseat, grabbing the handles again as the car barreled forward.
Maura slammed on the brakes just before the car's roof cleared the garage door by only centimeters, sliding under using its own forward motion, tires squealing.
"I invite you, Jane Rizzoli, into my home!" She yelled, just as Jane was feeling the effects of entering a domicile uninvited. Her veins popped to the top of her skin, pain wracking Jane's entire body as she grimaced and tensed up, but immediately she returned to normal at Maura's invitation, as she grabbed the handle above her head.
The car came to a screeching halt, just tapping the wall in front of them slightly with the bumper, the smoke from the tires enveloping the car as they sat, breathless.
Maura slowly reached up and hit the button and the garage door silently made its way back down its track.
The honey blonde then turned to Jane wide eyed and said seriously, in the same GPS voice that she had silenced earlier, "You have arrived at your destination."
They all three sat for a moment in silence. Then hilarious laughter could be heard coming from the garage all the way to the street outside.
R&I R&I R&I
As Korsak moved the trunk and supplies from the garage into the main house, Jane and Maura moved through the house closing all the blinds and drapes. As he closed and locked the door that led to the garage, a booming voice was heard outside.
"Sentinel!"
Maura looked quickly to Jane, who looked at the ceiling, rolling her now deep brown eyes. "Mmm...God, this night just gets better."
"Colin, I take it?" Maura asked, nervously, moving to the front window behind Jane, who moved the curtain aside and looked out.
She nodded, sighing.
She moved to the front door, flipping the porch light on before she clicked the locks open. She didn't need the light, but she wanted Maura to see him with her own eyes.
"Jane!" Maura said, alarmed. "Don't!"
Jane reached out and touched the doctor's hand, gently. "It's okay, baby. He can't come in. And believe me, he won't GO AWAY until I speak to him." She yelled the two words at the door.
She opened the door and stood squarely in the middle of it, just inside the jamb, one hand on the door, the other on her hip. Maura stood in front of the window, peering out through a small crack she had made in the curtain.
"Well, hello there, Colin." She said amiably. "How nice of you to join us tonight…finally."
In the front yard, just inside the porch light's glow, stood a tall man, his arms crossed over his chest. His hair was dyed white blond and cut close to his head, crew cut style. He had on well worn jeans and black jack boots that were laced over the cuffs. His shirt was a nondescript button down, open at the throat. Both of his ears were pierced and he wore a gold chain around his neck. He was smiling.
His eyes glowed red, although a little deeper red than the others that Maura had seen tonight. He wasn't as heavily muscled as Maura had pictured him to be, but she supposed that his vampire strength made a large musculature redundant.
"Well, hello to you, Sentinel." He said just as amiably, dipping his head to Jane.
"Haven't we done this before?" Jane asked, folding her arms over her chest, leaning her weight onto one hip. She rolled her eyes again. "Over and over and over again?"
"It's a bit different this time though, isn't it?" He asked. "You have a friend." He looked directly at Maura through her little crack.
Maura stepped back from the window, looking over at Jane. She didn't look at Maura, holding Colin's gaze.
"Be careful, now, Colin." Jane said, jokingly, but with an edge of seriousness. "This could get real serious, real fast."
He laughed, throwing his head back. "She's a beauty, ain't she? I mean, for a human. Bonding again, are we?"
Jane's eyes immediately morphed from deep brown to ice white. Maura moved behind Jane, looking over her shoulder.
"Don't, Jane." She whispered. "He's baiting you. Let it go…please." She pleaded, moving close to Jane, her body pressing up against Jane's back. She reached for Jane's arm, her hand settling in the crook of her elbow.
Colin laughed again, enjoying himself. "You better listen to the little lady, Sentinel. She speaks the truth."
Jane reached behind herself, looking for Maura's hand.
"That's right, Sentinel! Hold her hand! Hide in her house behind your invitation!" He brayed, throwing his head back again. "Because soon, she will be bowing…" He was suddenly gagging and grabbing his throat, the echo of gunfire in the air.
Jane stood in the doorway, holding the small pistol, pointed at the vampire, before her, a small tendril of smoke exiting the end of the barrel, her eyes focused. Instead of taking Maura's hand, she had reached into her waistband and closed her fingers around the gun, waiting for the right moment to fire.
In an instant, she was standing in front of him as he bent over, holding his throat, smoke slowly making its way from between his fingers. She leaned over, smelling him as he struggled to speak, taking deep breaths through her nose, her glowing eyes never leaving the back of his head as he coughed and gagged. She seemed almost feral.
Maura stood watching from the doorway, stunned, everything happening so fast that her mind hadn't quite processed it yet. She, too had thought that Jane was taking her hand, but just before their hands met, Maura felt Jane's true intention. Her new love had stealthily slid her hand around the pistol, keeping Colin talking so he wouldn't hear her as she clicked the safety off. She had been in control of herself the entire time.
She growled deep in her throat as she stood over her prey. It sounded almost like a panther. Maura heard it from the doorway. She wasn't scared. She knew that Jane was protecting her. She stepped forward almost out of the house, wanting to be with her partner. Korsak was there, taking her shoulders gently, pulling her back into the doorway. Colin's cronies were still about, waiting for the right moment, not daring to attack Jane directly now, knowing that they didn't stand a chance.
Jane's head snapped towards her, those white eyes glowing fiercely, brighter than Maura had ever seen them. Her fangs were out.
"Don't, Maura!" She said forcefully, but gently, holding her palm up towards Maura. Her voice was huskier and deeper than normal. Instead of being frightened by the transformation of her new mate, she was comforted, once again feeling a sense of deja vu, like this was old hat.
The tall brunette turned her full attention back to Colin.
She inhaled once again through her nose. She stood him up so he could look into her eyes.
"What the fuck did you do to me!" He coughed out angrily, moving his hand away from his throat, touching gently a small protruding sliver that was lodged just to the right of his Adam's apple. The skin around it was turning bright red as the poison moved out of the barb and into his skin.
Jane waited, pushing his hand away as he tried to pull it out, holding him by his shoulder with her other hand, shaking him like a rag doll.
"Not yet." She cooed, her voice returning to normal after making sure that Maura was safe. She waited a few more seconds, slapping his hands away as he tried to remove the foreign object from his neck.
Then, when the time was right, she moved his chin up with her free hand, making sure that he was looking directly into her own unique eyes and gently popped the barb out of his skin, which was now an angry purple, holding it front of his red eyes between her fingers so he could get a good look at it. She released his shoulder and pushed him away from her.
"Now…" She said, solemnly, smiling, her beautiful white fangs shining, her white glowing unblinking eyes holding his. "I own you, rogue."
He stood looking at the barb, so small and unassuming, rubbing his throat which was now tender and burning.
"What the fuck is that!" He yelled, his earlier bravado completely gone.
Jane, still smiling said softly, "It's your undoing…finally." She placed the barb into a small capsule that she pulled out of her pants pocket.
He watched her every move now with wide eyes.
"Gonna reuse that one." Jane said, smiling amiably, as she placed the capsule back into her pocket.
"What the fuck did you do to me!" He yelled again, but with a little less enthusiasm.
She moved towards him and was thrilled to see that he stepped backward, still rubbing his throat. She smiled, her fangs still prominent. She snaked out her tongue and licked the left one.
"I just tagged you, asshole." Jane explained. " The Council has been watching you for quite a while now. You and your little band of merry men." She looked up and around at the surrounding trees and the dark shadows, which weren't dark for Jane at all. She knew that his cronies were close. "You think that what you are trying to do is revolutionary? Gather the masses and stand up to the Council?"
Colin balked at the mention of the Council. "You're lying, Sentinel." He whispered, his conviction fading quickly as he scratched his neck, unconsciously.
She stood up to her full height and looked at him., tilting her head, "Am I?"
Jane heard the vampires rustling around and heard them whispering to each other, knowing that Colin could hear them, as well.
"Looks like the rats are leaving the sinking ship." Jane said, hearing a new sound heading their way.
Sirens were barreling towards them, the neighbors having heard the gunfire. She knew she could use her badge to soothe the cops. She also knew she could use her abilities, as well. But that sometimes had a ripple effect. One push could mean another push was needed. And soon, she was trying to stop the dominoes from falling. That is why she added the device to her gun to catch the casings. The less evidence of tonight's trouble, the better.
She needed Colin to understand what was about to happen to him and quickly.
He tried to use her distraction to flee.
She jumped on him like a cat on a mouse, pushing him to the ground, crouching over him and punching him dead in the face, twice, immediately leaning her face right above his, not letting him recover from her blows. She didn't want Maura to hear what she was about to say so she was pleased when Korsak pulled her inside the house, leaving the door open in case a speedy entrance was needed. Her heart filled with love for him quickly, as it always did every time he took care of her. And then that feeling passed as her vampire instincts took over.
She leaned into the defeated vampire and delivered his death knell.
"I marked you."" She purred. "Like a dog pissing on a tree. I can smell you now where ever you go. I can't kill you tonight because I need approval from the Council. But they know what you've been doing, Colin." She looked up, straddling his prone body and gauged the distance of the sirens. She stood up and moved towards Maura's house, her Sentinel eyes scanning the area around them, daring any one of Colin's cohorts to challenge her. None did.
She looked back down at him as he made his way to his feet. "I think that approval will be forthcoming, don't you?"
He stood, shakily, still rubbing his neck. "Fuck you." He said, quietly.
She moved towards him. "The sun will be up soon. You will tell me what I want to know." She said, looking at the horizon. She was instantly next to him, popping the gold chain off of his neck and palming it. "Sleep tight."
With that she walked slowly to Maura's front door, her Sentinel swagger evident, scanning the yard, the gold chain dangling from her hand.
Maura stood anxiously just inside waiting for her, Korsak's hands still on her shoulders. She shrugged them off as Jane walked through the door. She ran to her.
Jane turned and stood looking out of Maura's front door, as her life mate embraced her, burying her face in Jane's neck. The Sentinel smiled at the rogue vampire, clicking off the porch light. She saw Colin's red eyes glowing in the dark as her arm encircled Maura's warm body. She closed the door slowly, her eyes never leaving his, snapping the locks home.
