Chapter Twenty-One: South of You
Sailed out of Biscayne Bay headed for the island
No map, no plans, no place to be one broken heart to fix
So many memories, one photograph of you and me
I may be somewhere east of nowhere
Somewhere west of a town
That sits just north of an unknown latitude
I will sail this ship forever till I reach peace of mind
Live my life somewhere south of you
- "South of You" Toby Keith
"Jake," Fitz opened the door to his office, glancing outside of the door he saw Olivia tensely sitting at her desk, trying to focus on work, "what's up?"
"Do you want Olivia to join us? I have an update on Caroline." Jake replied easily.
Fitz nodded, "Olivia?" He called out. He watched as she mechanically looked up at him before turning back to her computer briefly and standing up.
"Yes?"
"Jake has an update." Fitz pushed the door open even wider so she could walk inside before shutting it securely.
"What did you find?" Olivia asked, "Is it bad like I think it is? I mean we've already seen your report if you have more" she started to ramble.
"It's not great, it's just more." Jake waved a file around. Eliminate her. "I think there's another man." He stated flatly.
Olivia and Fitz's eyes swiveled to Jake. This was not what they'd been expecting. "What?" Olivia whispered.
"There's another man in her life." He laid the file on Fitz's desk. "Something just wasn't sitting right with how neatly everything wrapped up so I decided to dig a little deeper. Make her go away.
Olivia picked up the file and opened it to find a slew of pictures of Caroline with another man. She squinted and frowned, recognizing the locations as similar to pictures of Jake and Caroline. Perhaps this was another B-613 agent. "Who is he?" Olivia asked blandly.
"His name is Tom Cartwright. He works for Metropolitan Bank." Another B-613 shell company. Olivia's eyes darted to Fitz's.
"We have to tell Harrison." Fitz picked up a photo from the stack. "He deserves to know."
"I know." Olivia murmured.
Ten minutes later Olivia turned to face Fitz, "What the hell just happened?" She asked.
Fitz shook his head, "I have no idea. Why would Jake give us Caroline like that?"
Olivia put her head in her hands, "They don't want us anywhere near the damn sun." She muttered darkly, "We have to tell Harrison," she agreed, "but it makes it look like she has nothing to do with B-613."
"Except for the fact that she's screwing two B-613 agents who we've confirmed work for the agency." Fitz reminded her.
Olivia hung her head, "I know, I just, we have to tell Harrison."
Fitz reached over and latched onto her hand, "We'll do it tonight. And we need to let him decide if he wants to confront Caroline."
"You know what all of this could mean." Olivia prodded him, finishing her statement when he didn't acknowledge her comment, "They're going to eliminate her."
SCANDAL
"It's done." Jake responded into the phone. He liked Caroline, he liked her a lot. She was talented, in more ways than one, but he had orders from Command, "They'll push her out after this." He paused and listened for further instructions, "Of course, when the time is right I'll handle it. They won't even know what happened, they'll just think she vanished, having run away like the foster kid she supposedly was." He hung up.
SCANDAL
Harrison shook his head, "First Huck gets us pictures with that Jake guy and now pictures with this Tom guy?" He sighed, "Is she screwing everyone who works with that agency?"
"We don't know what's real and what's not." Olivia reached over and grabbed his hand, squeezing it, "What we do know is that she's a target now. Jake turned on her."
"Command ordered it no doubt." Harrison spat.
Cyrus sighed and pushed himself up. The four of them were in his office, moving away from the sitting area he walked over to his desk and pulled out the bottle of bourbon and four tumbler glasses, "We're going to need something to get us through this conversation." Cyrus explained at the questioning looks. "The question is what do we do about Caroline."
"I have to warn her." Harrison stated bluntly, "Whatever she may be, she's in trouble. She's just another girl in danger because she dated me."
"She was ordered to date you and she works for the monsters." Olivia reminded him.
"And now she's in trouble. Livia, we can't let anymore people nearly die because of us or die because of us."
Olivia hung her head and sighed, "We tell her we know then."
"That's a target on our backs." Fitz stated aloud. "We should all tread carefully now."
Olivia sighed, "I hate to say it, but I can't think about this anymore. I have a paper for Poland to finish and we have a final tomorrow." Olivia reminded Harrison.
"Life goes on. With or without her, I suppose." Harrison muttered angrily before standing, "Thanks guys." He voice was quiet and defeated as he stalked out of the office.
Olivia turned and kissed Cyrus's cheek before pressing a kiss to Fitz's lips, "Continuous check ins tonight. I'm going to stay at Harrison's. I think David and Quinn will be over to study too."
"We'll stick together." Cyrus pointed to Fitz, "He can suck it up in my guest room for one night."
"Good plan. Stay in groups." Olivia paused with her hand on the door, "I love you both too much to lose you." She whispered to them before opening it and exiting.
"We need an attack plan." Fitz faced Cyrus, "We need to end this once and for all."
"Let's go find Caroline then." Cyrus slapped his back and returned the bourbon to its proper place.
SCANDAL
Caroline plopped down in the booth opposite Cyrus and Fitz, "Okay, so what's this big surprise for Harrison and Liv?" She asked. She was happy that she was finally being accepted into the group. It'd taken long enough. They were so damn exclusive and protective of each other. Then again, if Command was her father she probably would be too.
Fitz pushed the combined files from Huck and Jake in front of her. "Read." He instructed tersely.
Caroline frowned and opened them, immediately finding a picture of her and Tom defacing a monument on a late night run. She turned bright red and looked up, Fitz motioned to the file again and she flipped. This time she found a picture of her and Jake in the parking garage. Flipping again she found her cover story Jake had passed on and then finally the truth. The truth about who she and Jake were. They'd been discovered. And by amateurs no less.
She closed the file and straightened, "What do you want?"
"Jake fed us the pictures of you and Tom. He said you were seeing another man." Fitz stated in a bored tone, watching and noting as she paled and did her best to regain her composure, "You've been thrown under the bus by B-613." He finished.
"Again I ask, what do you want?" Caroline repeated.
"This is your chance to run." Cyrus told her. "Tell us what Jonathan and Eli want and then you can run."
"They'll find me."
"Not if you're fast enough."
"Fine. They want you out of Olivia's life." She pointed to Fitz, "And they want you out of both of their lives." She pointed to Cyrus. "They want their children to come home."
Fitz scoffed, "And you actually bought that story?" He asked, "That they want to play happy family and have their wayward children come home?"
Caroline shrugged, "I didn't care enough to ask. It was none of my concern."
"Good to know how much you cared." Fitz spat.
"I did care," Caroline began, at their incredulous looks she sighed, "life goes on with just the memories I suppose."
Fitz looked at Cyrus, who nodded, "Go." Cyrus instructed. And she did, fleeing the restaurant without a word to anyone.
"We need to find out what they're really up to." Fitz stated flatly.
"No shit, Sherlock." Cyrus responded.
