"Mai" Naru called softly, leaning in. The haze cleared, their lips only inches apart. He would not take advantage of Mai. "When did you start using PK?"
Mai reared back, as if the skin that pressed against Naru was set ablaze. In some ways, it had. Mai's heart crashed against her chest, and her face flushed. She steadied herself, laughed nervously, and sat back down. For a moment she wondered how she ended up in this situation. And then she wondered when she got so lonely that she would risk her heart breaking again just to be with someone who didn't love her. "What's brought this on?" Mai asked, trying to smile.
"I just realised you never told me"
"I just realised you never asked" Mai countered. Naru gave her a look of honest worry and concern. "I wouldn't take it personally, no one knows"
"Has anyone bothered to ask?" Naru wondered allowed, his head turning to hide his frustration.
"Why should they?"
"Because someone has to care enough to ask! Anyone should have cared to ask..." Naru sounded defeated, tired and broken.
"I told you when I became homeless didn't I? I was attacked behind an ally..." Naru winced at Mai's calm tone as she spoke of her cruel past. "I may have tweaked the truth... The police took a little while getting there, and when the man touched me, I screamed... I screamed so loud and for so long, because the world had dealt me such a terrible hand, because I was alone, because you left me and because I was scared..."
"What happened?" Naru asked, his voice weak and brittle.
"I don't know... I blacked out, but I think if I was to guess. I have had time to peace everything together, and I would have guessed that my PK started at that moment, while I was screaming. The man died... Or I think I...I think I killed him..." Mai buried her face in her hands, tears streaming down her cheek. Mai's voice broke and she hiccupped as she tried to keep her emotions at bay.
"Mai..." Naru cooed, taking her hand with his left one, and placing it on his cheek, he then placed his free hand on her cheek, wiping her eyes with his thumb. Mai looked up, her eyes swimming with tears, and her heart wrenching.
"Naru, when I woke, there was blood everywhere... I killed-" Mai turned silent, as Naru looked deep into her eyes, his forehead touching hers. He still had her hand trapped.
"I will never leave you alone like that again..." And with that Mai's eyes closed, and Naru's followed, and as their lips touched, the door was pulled open. Naru and Mai shot apart, having shared the softest of kisses, and Madoka and Lin stared in shock and embarrassment...
Mai froze, her hand released and dropped to her side. She put a hand on her hip, and even while blushing madly, she was able to demand an aura of control. "I told you that you weren't allowed in here!"
"But you let Naru in here!" Madoka cried, clearly giddy with sake that Mai had left in the fridge. "Was we intro-uppting?"
"Clearly" Lin toned, still visibly sober despite drinking Madoka under the table.
"But Linnie-bear! I wanna be in the bubblies waters!" Madoka giggled, pulling Lin with her and plunking them both in the hot-tube rather disgracefully.
"I'm going to bed... Please don't do anything in the hot-tube" Mai said quietly as she got out, wrapped a towel around herself and fixed the certain till it covered her last picture, before leaving to her room. Naru left shortly after, but didn't try to stop her. He just went to his room and intended to sleep the night away...
The next day, when Naru woke, he kept to himself. He was up early, having gotten very little sleep. No one else seemed to be up, as Naru made his way to the lounge.
Sitting at the table, however, was the very present Lin.
"Morning Oliver" Lin offered, nodding a greeting.
"Morning" Naru returned, putting on the kettle.
"How'd you sleep?"
"Barely" Naru answered, setting out two mugs for tea. "You?"
"Madoka was too drunk to sleep" Lin answered, trying to hide his embarrassment. Naru didn't call him on it. "What happened yesterday?"
"With what?" Naru asked innocently.
"You and Mai! It looked like you were gonna-"
"Nothing happened!" Naru insisted, his eyes and voice showing his disappointment.
"Did you want something to happen?" Lin asked, sounding genuinely comforting.
"Don't be ridiculous!" Naru scolded, clearing lying.
"I'm not being ridiculous, you love her and you know it!" Lin shot, before softening his tone at Naru's look of shock. He looked like he had just been slapped. "Why fight it-"
"I don't love her! I can't... What's the point of loving someone who's heart belongs to another?" Naru asked, happy with his logic, but his gut wrenched.
"You don't know that"
"Yes I do" Naru assured, before Mai's maid bounded down the stairs.
"Oh my, please forgive me for not being here to make your tea Master Davis, and Mr Lin" She pleaded, quickly going to finish the tea before Naru stopped her.
"It's fine, I can do it. I will make sure you are not reprimanded" Naru promised, watching the maid bow deeply, and feeling a little too comfortable. Maids wasn't new for Oliver Davis.
"Thank you very much" The maid stood up straight again, smiling widely "I shall finish the mistresses bath. Did anyone else want me to run them a bath too?"
"Madoka might appreciate a bath, but we are fine thank you" Lin answered, smiling back. The Maid nodded and scurried off.
"If Madoka saw you smiling at that girl she was go insane" Naru chided, changing the subject as he handed Lin his tea.
"That she would..."
