I feel like a kid again, writing notes between classes, as I want to write "Sorry so short" "Longer letter later" This is short (and like half of it is lyrics...) but I needed to break it where I did...carry the angst over, you know...think of it as a Friday cliffhanger...but I hopefully won't make you wait that long. I plan to start writing Chapter 22 right after I post this (while all the angst is fresh in my head), and, now that Christmas is over :( ...I will have more time to write :D If you haven't heard the song (below), you should check it out on YT...really give it a listen...it helps you get a sense of the atmosphere and all that...maybe light a few candles...or, sniff a car air freshener I guess would be more atmospherically appropriate for the story. Anyway...here it is, in all its shortness...(no, seriously, I have written more here in this bold part than in the entire story, I think...short, I tell ya, short...)
Will feels Sonny's hand next to his and there is a sudden tightness in his chest. He waits for Sonny to play some joke on him, as they often do on set, or to apologize and quickly pull his hand back. But instead, Sonny slides his fingers between Will's and takes a firm hold of his hand. Will instinctively turns to face Sonny, who seems unfazed, and continues to calmly drive without so much as a word or movement to indicate that anything has happened between them.
Will takes a minute's worth of deep breaths in attempt to slow his heart rate, and simultaneously prays that the sweat glands connected to his hand behave themselves for the remainder of the ride home.
To break the silence, sitting at a stoplight, Sonny reaches over with his left hand and turns on the radio. After fidgeting through a few stations, he gets a slight smile on his face and switches over to his own music, which he already has connected to the system. Will looks out of the corner of his eye to see what Sonny is doing, but is too nervous to face him quite yet. And then the song begins…"Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop" by Landon Pigg…
I think that possibly, maybe I'm falling for you
Yes there's a chance that I've fallen quite hard over you.
I've seen the paths that your eyes wander down
I want to come too
I think that possibly, maybe I'm falling for you
No one understands me quite like you do
Through all of the shadowy corners of me
I never knew just what it was about this old coffee shop
I love so much
All of the while I never knew
I never knew just what it was about this old coffee shop
I love so much
All of the while I never knew
I think that possibly, maybe I'm falling for you
Yes there's a chance that I've fallen quite hard over you.
I've seen the waters that make your eyes shine
Now I'm shining too
Because oh because
I've fallen quite hard over you
If I didn't know you, I'd rather not know
If I couldn't have you, I'd rather be alone
I never knew just what it was about this old coffee shop
I love so much
All of the while I never knew
I never knew just what it was about this old coffee shop
I love so much
All of the while, I never knew
All of the while, all of the while,
it was you
When the song ends, there is silence. Sonny turns the car off and Will realizes they are sitting in the parking lot of his apartment complex. He looks down at his hand, still entangled in Sonny's, sitting atop his backpack, and smiles. Finally raising his head and turning to face Sonny, they exchange shy smiles before glancing down, unsure what to do next. Will tightens his hold on Sonny's hand a bit, then runs his thumb over Sonny's, feeling the soft skin that has become so familiar to him on set, but the feeling seems so new…so real…sitting here next to Sonny…no scripts, no directors…just he and Sonny…alone. He hears Sonny take in a deep breath and let it out through his mouth, and looks over to see Sonny close his eyes for a moment, all in reaction to Will's flirtatious gesture. When Sonny opens his eyes, Will is looking back at him with his beautiful blue eyes.
"So—" they say in unison, then laugh.
"I should go—" "Want to come up?"
Will looks dejected and replies, "Oh…oh, okay, sure…" as Sonny's eyes widen and, although his mouth drops open, initially nothing comes out.
"I just thought…I wasn't sure…I mean…I don't know what…" Sonny babbles.
"Oh…yeah, I don't know either," Will says, releasing his hand from Sonny's grasp. He picks up his backpack from his lap and opens the door. "Um…thanks for the ride."
"Yeah, no problem," Sonny responds, his mind spinning, "and thanks for letting me stay last night."
Will nods and closes the door. He takes his backpack by the top loop, practically dragging it on the ground as he walks up to the front doors. Shaking his head and running his free hand through his hair, he feels his heart drop from the rush to the disappointment. He saunters in the front doors and walks to the elevator with his head lowered, not wanting anyone to see the tears forming in his eyes. He pushes the button for his floor, drops his bag to the ground, and buries his face in his hands. What is going on? Finally he had thought that this little dance that he and Sonny have been doing…sometimes a hokey pokey, sometimes a mosh pit…had tonight become more of a waltz. A give and take…not taking steps in different directions, but finally moving swiftly together. He knew it was a huge step for Sonny to come out to him today, before even telling his parents. He knew it would take time for Sonny to want to go out…out into society…as a gay man…and Will was fine with that. No, he didn't want a closeted boyfriend, but he would give Sonny time to come to terms with what he had just come to terms with himself.
Noticing that the elevator has still not started to move, Will lifts his head and reaches for the door close button, but freezes. There, leaning against one elevator door, with his foot holding the other, is Sonny.
