Amy nodded blankly, eyes trained on the shadow that loomed ahead of them. "I can't do this again. I don't want to face the Weeping Angels."
"You have to. Gather your courage. For me. I'll get you out of this." Rory's words rang in his head: You know what's dangerous about you? Something you make people take risks is you make them want to impress you. You make it so they don't want to let you down. You have no idea how dangerous you make people to themselves when you're around.
The Doctor shook his head, clearing the thoughts. "Right, let's just pretend there aren't any demon-yet-angel creatures lurking about in the shadows, and instead have fun looking for Percy and Annabeth!" He slipped his free hand into his jacket and pulled out his sonic screwdriver. The tool screeched as the Doctor used it to survey the area.
One half-blood detected forty-two northwest.
The Doctor put the screwdriver back, not noticing it only said "one half-blood", and began running. "This way!" Amy was dragged along.
"But the angel!"
"No time for the angel! Run! Amy, I can't drag you the whole way!"
He heard a panicked gasp from his companion before he felt the pressure in his arm loosen. The sun was shining above their heads, yet the weather was chilly seeing as it was late-October. It was strange. The once-busy, bumbling Big Apple New York City now completely empty! What a marvel? A great one at that. Well, that was a useless answer. The question was rhetorical.
They saw a splash of black dot the scenery. Percy. He seemed to be paralyzed. Finally, the Doctor and Amy arrived. "Where's Annabeth?" Amy asked.
Percy sent her a grave look. "Gone."
"Gone? What do you me—" He spotted it. The dull stone. The closed wings. A Weeping Angel. A hand was outstretched forward, as if it were holding onto something when it Doctor felt his throat go dry. "I'm sorry."
"Sorry?" Percy asked, voice cracking. "Sorry is meaningless."
The Doctor remained silent.
He knew that more than anyone. Sorry became empty over the years. When you've lived most of your short (or long, if you're a Timelord, any out there?) life apologizing to so many people, the word becomes almost nothing. It rots through the years.
Amy wiped the corner of her right eye. "We can go back and get her, yeah? Bring her back here?"
The Doctor paused. His gaze settled on Amy as he nodded. "One exception. I hope. Percy, check a cemetery."
Percy frowned and ran off.
"Oh!" The Doctor remembered there were more angels. "Look out for the Weeping Angels! They'll get you!"
But Percy was already there.
Percy had a feeling about what the Doctor meant when he asked for him to check a graveyard. Percy walked carefully through the dull patch of yard. A boy stepped out of the shadows. "Nico," Percy dipped his head.
"Hey, Percy, what are you doing? Why is it so quiet?" Nico's eyes went wide and Percy understood his panic.
"No! There is not another Titan War happening, we just got over the last one. And I'm in a graveyard because I'm looking for Annabeth."
"What?" Nico looked confused. "Why are you looking for Annabeth?"
"Doctor's orders," Percy shrugged. He wasn't sure if he wanted to tell the boy that there was a whole nother world up in space. And in those other worlds, there was a man with a blue box.
"Doctor... Percy, I don't think a doctor would prescribe looking for a girlfriend in a cemetery." Nico looked sceptical.
Percy looked around for the words Annabeth Chase nervously. Wait. If she really did get zapped to the past, that means that she could've gotten married. Percy shuddered at the thought and looked around some more, but only for Annabeth. He didn't see one.
Letting out a sigh of relief, he ran out, unaware of Nico's light footsteps behind him.
Nico was so confused.
Here is a list of reasons why:
1) Doctors don't normally prescribe looking for girlfriends in cemeteries
2) Percy was acting awfully nervous
3) Percy also froze abruptly before shuddering and looking at the tombstones
That's just messed up. Did the doctor think Percy was crazy? Sure, he was a demigod, they all were crazy, but he didn't belong in an insane asylum. Nico followed Percy quietly and blushed when he saw a beautiful red-haired girl in a long red jumper with a very short skirt and leggings along with Converse. She was gorgeous.
And then his eyes landed on the man next to her. He had a protective stance beside the woman, his hand firmly clasping hers. He had floppy hair, suspenders, a tweed jacket, high-waisted trousers, work boots and weirdest of all... a bow tie.
They were talking hurriedly to each other. Nico noted their foreign accents. The redhead's was Scottish mixed with British while the man with the bow tie's was mainly British. Nico silently slipped into the shadows.
"Did you find her?" the man with the bow tie asked Percy.
Percy shook his head. "Not a single one had Annabeth on it, thank the gods."
Bow tie man looked at his red-haired friend. "Amy, have you heard anything yet? Do you hear something?"
Amy focused. "No... yes... Yes! Doctor, that's the TARDIS!"
So the man in the bow tie's name was the Doctor? That's a bit odd. And what's the TARDIS?
"Percy," the Doctor looked back at said person, "tell me exactly what happened. Exactly."
"Well, she was standing there, and then I saw this angel thing standing here, then suddenly bam! Annabeth disappeared." Percy whirled around, t-shirt lifting up a bit at the hem. "What happened to her?"
The Doctor grimaced and Nico saw Amy run her thumb over his knuckles. "She was taken back in time," Amy said, "by the Weeping Angels. They're... Quantum Locked. If something is looking directly at them, they turn to stone. It's like that ugly lady... from Greek mythology... Medusa. Except they can change back to flesh once the eyes are off of them."
"So I can't blink?"
"No!" the Doctor shouted. "Don't blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast. Faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink. Fascinating race, the Weeping Angels. The only psychopaths in the universe to kill you nicely. No mess, no fuss, they just zap you into the past and let you live to death. The rest of your life used up and blown away in the blink of an eye. You die in the past, and in the present they consume the energy of all the days you might have had, all your stolen moments. They're creatures of the abstract. They live off potential energy.
"The Lonely Assassins, that's what they used to be called. No one quite knows where they came from, but they're as old as the Universe, or very nearly. And they have survived this long because they have the most perfect defence system ever evolved. They are Quantum Locked. They don't exist when they are being observed. The moment they are seen by any other living creature they freeze into rock. No choice, it's a fact of their biology. In the sight of any living thing, they literally turn into stone. And you can't kill a stone. Of course, a stone can't kill you either, but then you turn your head away. Then you blink. Then, oh yes, it can."
The Doctor looked away and frowned. "Who're you?"
"What? Who's who?" Amy asked.
"That boy," the Doctor answered, "that boy standing there in the shadows. C'mon, what're you doing? You should be gone!"
"Nico!" Percy shrieked. "What're you doing here?"
"I could ask you the same thing! Who are these people!?" Nico stepped out of the shadows. "How do you know them? Where are the from? Somewhere in the UK, I'm guessing? Are you all related?"
The trio all shook their heads. "No," the Doctor said, "I'm the Doctor, that's Amy and that's Percy."
Nico looked wary and Percy turned his attention back to the Doctor. "Tell me more about the Weeping Angels."
"They're Quantum Locked, as I said. That's why they cover their eyes. They're not weeping, they can't risk looking at each other. Their greatest asset is their greatest curse. They can never be seen. Loneliest creatures in the Universe. And I'm sorry. I am very, very sorry. It's up to you to find Annabeth now."
A sudden screeching noise filled the air, Nico nervously reached for his ring. Instead of a monster, a blue 1960s police box appeared in front of them.
The Doctor tried opening the doors. They didn't budge. Amy tried. They didn't move for her either. "Percy," the Doctor frowned once again, "you are most definitely on your own and we'll be stuck here. Try your best to fly her. Hope she let's you. Just save Annabeth. When you do... Immediately come back. She shouldn't be too far back in time, maybe just one or two years. Let's hope. This could be bad. It is. It is very not good."
Percy hesitated before opening the doors, inside was a weird circular thing. Nico had enough. He was going to the Underworld. "Percy. I am leaving. I am going to the underworld. Goodbye!" He disappeared into the shadows.
Nico didn't care how out of character and spontaneous that sounded, he truly was confused. He stayed silent once in the Underworld, not even acknowledging his father's presence.
