Demands, Kisses and Apologies
Rhydian lay in bed that night. The darkness had consumed Stoneybridge but unlike usually on Dark Moon days when Rhydian would return home and simply collapse on his bed and fall in to a deep slumber, he had only been able to doze for half an hour or so at a time. Mind racing, he tossed and turned, all of his muscles aching and begging him to sleep; his brain on the other hand decided to work overtime.
Maddy had kissed him. It didn't matter that she had run off after Dean or that she hadn't spoken to him since. Maddy had kissed him.
It didn't matter that everyone at school would hate the two of them forever for what she did to Dean. Maddy had kissed him.
The fact that they were a pair of wolfbloods hiding from the rest of the world on the pain of death. Maddy had kissed him.
Even though his mum could be back any time, not only to split them up and take him back to the wild, Rhydian didn't care. Maddy had kissed him!
Heaving himself up and out of bed, shivering a little as his feet hit the cold wooden floor, Rhydian walked over to the window. The ledge outside was wide enough to sit on and often, when sleep was avoiding him, he would force open the stiff window and climb out.
The cool air hit him hard and whenever he real eased a breath, Rhydian released a mist into the night sky. It was starry tonight and looking up researched for the non-existent moon above him.
Emotions raged inside him which he fought to control. Usually a dark moon was the one dark he never felt like himself, as though he wasn't really there. It was as if for one day a month Rhydian would feel fantastic because nothing could hurt him on the dark of a full moon; then two weeks later he would fade into the background as the moon disappeared entirely.
Tonight, he had never felt so real. Rhydian had always thought the best feeling in life would be that of a wolf. Maybe he was wrong.
The light in Rhydian's room was off but the curtains remained open. Therefore Maddy couldn't be sure whether he was asleep. Seeing as it was a dark moon, at eight o'clock she would have guessed that he was. Yet she was still wide awake.
There was movement at the window and instinctively Maddy backed away into the trees behind her, removing her shadow - cast by the light of the millions of stars - from the garden.
He was awake. Maddy saw him now, smiling for a moment before washing the expression forever off of her face. Despite all of his wolf powers were gone, Rhydian was still an inept climber, she noted, as his placed one foot over the edge of the ledge and allowed the other one to follow.
Inside his head, she could see Rhydian puzzling over something, his brows furrowed and a small crease appeared on the left of his mouth as he bit the inside of his lip.
What was he thinking? Maddy thought she could guess from the smile on his face but was scared that she would be correct.
He was thinking about their kiss.
The crack of a twig under her foot might as well have been the cracking of her heart. Taking a deep breath, Maddy whispered two words.
"I'm sorry."
Slowly, she turned to walked away.
A moment later, another pair of feet filled her spot. "Stop where you are, Tame Wolfblood."
Maddy froze. That voice...She had hoped she would never hear it again.
Cautiously, she circled on the spot. "What do you want, Ceri?" Her voice was strong and commanding, the sort of voice she would use to intimidate another student who tried to get in her way.
"Stay away from my son," Ceri ordered with gritted teeth and a glare that could melt ice. As the final word slipped from her lips, a snarl emerged too. "The wild and tames of our species don't belong together."
"If you hadn't noticed, Rhydian left the wild. He left you. He wants to be here," retorted Maddy firmly.
Ceri growled. "You forced him to. If you had left him alone in the first place, he never would have left our pack. Stay. Away. From. Him."
Turning on her heel, the wild wolfblood fled into the forest. Maddy thought she heard a growling and guessed Ceri had transformed.
Sure she was alone, the tears trickled down her face. A smooth black line of mascara highlighted how pale her cheeks were in the moonlight.
This wasn't the hysterical crying that you see in films, when someone either wants attention or simply cannot stop. This was the crying of someone truly sad, who knows what they must do, no matter the sorrow it will cause.
Wiping away the already smudged line, Maddy took a deep breath. This is what she needed to do.
Whiiping her phone out of her pocket, she dialled the number which had fixated itself in her memory. "Hey. Yeah, it's me. About what I said earlier..."
The eye liner coated the lid of her eye in one smooth, straight line. Since Rhydian had returned and they had reconciled, the 'cool Maddy' had slowly begun to fade. Only small changes, such as the lack of make-up or the odd day she would wear trousers and forget to put on a ring.
Banishing the thoughts of Rhydian, she resumed preparing herself for the day. Dragging herself over to the mirror, Maddy hitched up her skirt a couple of inches and undid the top button on her shirt.
In the long run, this is what she had to do.
Rhydian hadn't any idea what would happen the next day at school. He certainly didn't expect this.
She had walked straight past him.
Not a word. Not a smile. Not even a glance.
She had walked straight past him.
Maddy had ignored him.
"Hey," Rhydian called after her, the shock evaporating quickly. "Hey, Mads! Mads?"
Nothing.
He rounded the corner a few seconds after she had, this brain still processing what had just happened.
Even though he had tried to stay under the radar his whole life, especially since he had found out he was a wolfblood, Rhydian had never felt so invisible. Yesterday, everything had been perfect. He'd thought... What had gone wrong?
Rhydian froze. What had happened at the party had been bad. This was worse.
Dean.
Why was she..? Why would she? How could she?
Her arms snaked around his neck, crushing her body against his and eliminating the space between them. Dean's tanned hands stood about against the electric blue of her hair as his fingers laced themselves behind her head. Maddy wrapped her arms around his neck, one hand occasionally straying down his back or to his shoulders.
Their lips parted although their breathing remained rigorous, as though they had been doing sports. Dean bent down and whispered something in her ear. Either he said something funny or his warm breath must have tickled her because Maddy giggled like a thirteen year old school girl.
With a parting kiss, Dean turned and walked away.
Maddy began to walk in Rhydian's direction. She caught his eye.
She fled, speeding back down the corridors away from him.
"Maddy?" Rhydian yelled after her. "Maddy!"
A chase ensued. Rhydian dodged through the people, shoving a few out of the way and craning his head over everyone else to catch a glimpse of that bright hair. For once, he was happy that she'd dyed it. Every so often, Maddy would glance back to see him following her. Her feet walked faster.
Numerous heads twisted in their direction, the rumours of the previous day having spread through the school halls twice over.
Both of them ignored the garwping faces and rushed like a stampede through the crowds. Maddy darted left out of a fire exit and onto the playground. She emerged in the middle of a throng of girls all huddled around one with a birthday.
Maddy pushed through them, tangling herself up in the wrapping paper that littered the ground and tripping over someone's feet. By the time she was free, Rhydian had caught up.
As the bell rang, Rhydian's hand clasped around Maddy's wrist.
"Why..? What...?" Now that the moment to get the answers had arrived, the questions had deserted him. "Why..?" He asked again.
"Maddy! Rhydian!" Mr. Jefferies shouted across the playground. "I believe you have a history lesson with me first period. Inside!"
Maddy took a step to leave but Rhydian's grip didn't falter.
"Please, Rhydian," she said, looking into his eyes. "Don't make this any harder than it is." Rhydian dropped his grasp on her.
As she walked away, Maddy muttered to herself. "It's hard enough already."
This time, Rhydian watched Maddy walk away.
Hey, I am trying to publish a new chapter for every new episode so there will be another one tomorrow.
By the way, I found out that Dean's last name is actually Samuels but can't change it in the previous chapters
Enjoy!
