Moving Day
Around noon, Elizabeth, Alice, Jasper and I pulled up to the condo that Edward was renting. I could see the U-Haul and his car parked in the driveway, so I knew he was already there. Emmett's truck was parked on the street, and I could see him talking to who I assumed were Edward's parents on the front porch.
We all piled out quickly, and Elizabeth and I rushed toward the house. Edward appeared with a huge smile on his face and ran up throwing his arms around both of us. He kissed Elizabeth's forehead and then kissed me on the mouth. We hugged for a few minutes before we released each other. Edward's parents had made their way toward us and were both smiling at the exchange.
Edward placed his arms around both me and Elizabeth and looked at his parents. "Mom, Dad, I'd like you to meet Bella and Elizabeth Black. Bella, Lizzy, these are my parents, Esme and Carlisle Cullen."
Esme stepped forward first and threw her arms around me. "It's so nice to finally meet you, Bella." She leaned back and looked down at Elizabeth. "And you, too, Elizabeth. I just love your name."
"Thanks," Elizabeth said shyly, hiding a little behind Edward. "Nice to meet you."
"They don't bite, Liz," Edward said, grinning down at her.
Carlisle stepped forward then and lowered himself to Elizabeth's height. "Well, I bite, but I promise to be nice." He winked at her and she giggled at him.
"Hello, Edward, good to see you, son." I turned and saw my dad walk up behind us. He stuck his hand out to Edward, who took it and shook it, smiling at him.
"You, too, Charlie."
"Edward!" Esme scolded.
"Mom, he said I could call him that," he laughed. Edward introduced my dad, Alice and Jasper to his parents.
We got started unpacking the U-Haul. Edward's hope was that we would be able to get it unloaded before it got dark. Unfortunately, Sacramento weather in summer made it really uncomfortable to unload. Alice and Esme made sure that the rest of us had plenty of water while they took turns watching Kaley. Alice had brought a play pen with some toys, and they had set it up in the living room so that she was visible.
At one point, when I was walking into the house with a box, I caught a glimpse of Esme holding Kaley. She was tickling the toddler and they were both laughing. For a moment, I got caught up in the beauty of the moment and realized that Esme would make a wonderful grandmother.
Tears of joy filled my eyes and I had to escape to another room before I lost it. I hadn't told Edward yet, or anyone else for that matter. Alice had guessed, of course, but I had never confirmed it. Just yesterday I had finally convinced myself to take a home test which confirmed my suspicion. I was pregnant with Edward's baby.
I had cried when I got the results. The uncertainty of the situation had struck me, and I wasn't sure how to tell him or what his reaction was going to be. I had been the one to insist that we didn't need a condom that last night because I was sure my birth control would work. I realized later that I had forgotten to take the pill that day. Edward was such a sweet person and I was sure he wouldn't blame me, but I certainly did.
Elizabeth walked by me and smiled as she set down a lamp in the bedroom. "You OK, Mom?"
"Yeah, I'm OK. Just a little hot."
"Well, it's about a thousand degrees outside." She rolled her eyes and walked back outside. She was still on edge a little and I wasn't sure why. Honestly, I hoped that she would talk to Edward about whatever it was that was bothering her, since she wasn't talking to me.
Finally I was able to walk back outside to grab another box. We were about half way done emptying the truck when Emmett told all of us that we needed to take a break. The whole group sighed in relief and walked inside to the air conditioned condo, sitting on the floor. Alice and Esme handed out bottles of water and towels that we used to wipe the sweat off of our foreheads.
"Man, you chose like the hottest day in the summer to move," Emmett said, leaning his head against the wall.
"Sorry, Em. Wasn't intentional," Edward said, leaning back also, but grabbing my hand and threading my fingers with his.
Esme passed by us and smiled at our locked hands. She glanced up at me and sat down on the floor next to us. "So, Bella, tell me about yourself."
"Um…" I could feel the bile start to rise as my eyes blanked over a little. A combination of the heat and missing lunch was causing me to feel sick again.
"Mom, she's hot and tired. Grill her later, OK?" Edward brought my hand up to his lips and kissed my hand softly.
"Oh, Edward," she said, standing up and scowling at him. She smiled at me, though, before she walked away.
"Sorry, love. But she's really curious about you. I've never been in love before and she just wants to get to know you," he whispered, kissing my forehead.
"I know, it's OK." I closed my eyes waiting for the dizziness to pass. When I opened my eyes I saw Alice looking at me. I smiled weakly, reassuring her that I was OK.
After a few minutes of resting, we all got back to unpacking. After that, we had renewed energy and a desperate need to be done, so we were all working faster. Elizabeth and I stuck to the smaller items while Edward, my dad, Jasper and Emmett cleared out the rest of the furniture before starting on the boxes.
After another hour and a half we were finally done. Elizabeth and I decided to make a food run so that no one else had to get up. She was really quiet so I decided to try again.
"Elizabeth, can you please tell me what's wrong?"
"It's nothing," she said, looking out the window and avoiding my gaze.
"Elizabeth," I said again, hoping she would just tell me already.
"Why does he have to live so far away?" she exclaimed, turning to face me. "Why can't he live with us? He'll be so far away that we still won't see him that often!"
"Oh, honey…" Unfortunately I wasn't sure what to say because I agreed with her. I wished that Edward had come with us so that he could help explain. "Edward thought it would be better this way, since he and I are in a new relationship and you have friends in Napa."
"I don't care about Napa!" she almost yelled. "I want Edward with us!"
"I know sweetie, but Edward was doing what he thought was right. I know it's hard to see it that way right now, but he was trying to be good to us. He didn't want us to pick up our lives again so soon and have to move to yet another town." I was starting to understand his opinion in this matter, but that didn't mean that I agreed with it. Truth be told, I wish I could stamp my feet and tell him exactly how I felt, too.
"Then why can't he just move in with us?"
"Do you remember how long it took us to get to Edward's house from Napa today?"
"Yeah."
"He would have to make that drive every day, twice a day to and from work. That's a lot of driving, honey."
"OK, I guess I understand. Still stupid, though."
"I'm sorry, honey. Have you talked to Edward about this?"
"No."
"Maybe you should. He is promising that he will come and visit us each weekend."
"Really?" She seemed to perk up at that thought, not having the same concerns that I did about him getting too busy.
"Really. He loves us, honey. He wants to spend time with us, you know that." My stomach clenched again and another round of dizziness hit me. I had to keep it together until I got back to Edward's, at least.
"Yeah, I know. I just wish he wasn't so far away," she pouted.
Now that I finally understood what was wrong, and we had talked about it, she seemed a little happier. By the time we got back to the condo with the food she was in a much better mood.
The entire way back my stomach was objecting the smell of the pizza, so I begged off from eating it and went to the bathroom instead. After throwing up for a few minutes, I lay down on the cold tile floor and closed my eyes. I had chosen to use the bathroom in the master bedroom, since it was farthest away from the kitchen and living room where everyone else was.
Unfortunately, I knew my luck had run out when someone knocked on the door. Frantic, I stood up and ran the water in the sink to rinse out my mouth.
"Bella?" Alice asked, tentatively. "Are you OK?"
Mildly relieved, I opened the door and let Alice in. She came in and sat down on the toilet looking at me.
"I'm OK, Ali," I said, wiping my forehead off with a paper towel.
"Bullshit."
"Huh?"
"You're pregnant, aren't you?"
I sighed and sank down to the ground. "I knew that you had figured it out. In fact, I think you knew before I did."
"Does Edward know?"
"No, I haven't told him."
"Why not?"
"I didn't want to ruin moving day for him."
"Ha!" Alice said, leaning forward slightly. "That man loves you more than I thought possible, and you think that would ruin his day?"
"We weren't planning on this…it's too soon in our relationship. I'm afraid he'll be upset." I looked up at her, willing the tears away. "What if he hates me? He just moved his whole life for me and then I hit him with this! I don't know what to do."
Alice looked at me with a stern glance. "You walk up to him and say, Edward I love you and I'm pregnant."
A gasp from the bedroom made both of us stop talking and glance at the slightly open door. Edward was standing on the other side of it, his mouth hanging open. My face burned as I looked up at his shocked face.
"Bella, are you pregnant?"
A/N: Sorry! I know you are all dying to know what happens, so I'll post the next chapter soon. Any of you who have read my previous stories will know that I like to throw in the occasional cliffy…
In any case, I will try to post the next chapter before this week is up. We are about 10 chapters to the end and have lots to cover. See you next time!
