Chapter 21
With tears in his eyes, Raph wandered down the street. He had to stick to the shadows for the first half hour, but upon stumbling into a sleeping homeless, he snatched his jacket off of him and started strolling through the streets undetected.
His mind was clouded with confusion, whether or not to believe Leo upon Mikey being dead, after being lied to for so long. And the fact of what he had said to Leo. Although it hurt to know that he had lied to us about his cancer, and that he worked with enemy behind their back, he was still their brother. He was still pissed beyond belief at him.
He noticed a pay phone and quickly hurried to it, taking the phone and sliding two quarters he found in the jacket into the coin slot. Dialing Mikey's number, he prayed to himself that Mikey would answer, "Come on Mikey," He muttered sheepishly.
Four rings later, he began losing hope, slowly feeling his insides melt.
"You have reached the voice mailbox of-"
Raph slammed the phone down onto the receiver and rammed his fist onto the top of the pay phone. Whispering to himself, "Mikey can't be dead."
He tried to keep his cool as he began walking nonchalantly.
He winced sharply as his hand lingered in pain. The knife wound he took to it a while back hasn't healed right, partly because he wasn't really worried about it. With the lair, Bishop, and Leo, he had almost forgotten it was there.
"Please…do not demonize your brother for what he has done. We all mistakes."
Splinter's voice suddenly popped in Raph's head, spawning more tears. "Shit.' He cursed to himself, wiping them away.
Raph wished Splinter was here, he would know what to do in this situation. Raph felt so lost, he had no idea where Don was, still didn't know if Mikey was dead or not, and completely lost Leo.
He had failed as a brother, and a leader. He didn't know why Splinter bothered making him a leader. He never realized how much this team needed a real leader until now. After Leo, Splinter felt like more of the leader then Raph. And when he died, everything just went down hill. And when Raph thought he was ready to step in as the leader, everything just goes to hell.
Then the thought flashed in his head, what if Splinter had prepared for this? What if this was a test to see if Raph really did have what it takes to lead? And he's just walking through the streets, sulking.
Would Leo do this if put in this situation? Back before he lost his mind.
No, he would find Don and Mikey, get Leo back, and finish this.
Raph suddenly felt his heart race with determination and energy. Splinter had faith in him to lead his brothers, and Raph isn't going to let them down.
…
Don's eyes opened wearily, eyes feeling swollen and dry. He groaned, quickly looked around Casey's apartment. He spotted Casey in his bed, still sound asleep. Last night, Don had done his best with bandaging his wounds, gave him a few painkillers and a little medicine to knock him out.
He started to panic when he noticed that Mikey was gone. "Mikey!" He called as he jumped to his feet. He ran through the apartment, searching every room for his brother, but Mikey was gone.
"Mikey!" He shouted again, and then realized the little slip of paper on the kitchen table. He walked up to it and read the simple message,
On the roof.
Mikey
Don sighed in relief and annoyance. Usually he wouldn't freak out so bad when Mikey goes missing, he guessed he's been on edge lately with everything that has happened. He glanced toward the fire escape and made his way to the roof to join his brother.
The conversation Don held with Bishop still lingered like a virus in his head, but it didn't get to him. He didn't blame Leo…for anything. Looking back before any of this happened, he knew that Leo wasn't himself, and now he knew why.
He felt the old, slightly burnt folded up piece of paper in his belt as he walked. Feeling depressed every time he thought about the note.
Don wished he knew before that everything Leo had done was for them. Then maybe he wouldn't have been to hard on him. He also wished Leo had been honest with them before doing something as stupid as joining Saki. Even Leo had to know that Saki couldn't be trusted. There had to be another way to go about this, something better then this.
Don climbed out of the window and started making his way up the fire exit, up to the roof. He stopped for a second, scanning the streets. They seemed empty, probably due to the recent acts of "terror" that have befallen New York. But Don didn't care about that, he cared about Raph and Leo. They were out there somewhere, and Don had absolutely no idea where they were.
He sighed sadly and pressed on up the ladder, when he reached the top, he instantly saw Mikey sitting on the ledge of the building, just staring off into the sky. He shook his head and joined his brother on the ledge. Mikey glanced at him, "Was wondering when you were going to join me."
Don sighed as he flung his legs over the edge and puffed deeply, "Why are you up here anyway?" He asked innocently.
Mikey shrugged with a smile, "I don't know, I guess It just feels good to just sit down…not be shot at or anything." He said. Don frowned, leaning forward, looking down at the street below.
"Been a hell of a few days hasn't it?" Mikey claimed.
Don had to agree, from taking a whole crowd of foot ninjas by himself, then taking an even bigger crowd of foot ninjas with his brothers and Casey, to being shot at by Bishops men and the lair blowing up. Yeah, it's been a hell of a few days.
"You can say that again." Don said softly.
Silence lingered between the two of them, Mikey shifted uncomfortable, "Is it true?" Mikey asked roughly, "Leo's cancer?"
Don knew this moment was coming sooner or later, but he hated it, glaring down as his heart hammered painfully in his chest. "Yeah." He whispered.
Mikey had already expected that answer, but hearing it from his brother felt like he heard it for the first time. He felt as though someone had taken his stomach and squeezed it. He groaned as he felt tears begin to surge in his eyes, not wanting to cry in front of Don. He did his best to hide the tears as he took a deep breath. Don shook his head, taking the slip of paper out of his belt and handing it to Mikey, "I found this at the lair after it exploded." He said.
Mikey took the note, unfolded it and started reading. Don uncomfortable amongst the rooftops, hoping to find Raph somewhere. He felt weird knowing that Leo and Raph were out there somewhere, he also wondered where April could be, last he remembered, Raph and her were together after the farmhouse. Maybe they were still together, at least…Don hoped.
Mikey finished the note and folded it back up, handing it to Don. "It all makes sense now." Mikey hesitantly remarked.
Don sighed, "You ok?"
Mikey shook his head, groaning as he wiped his hands on his face, trying to get rid of the urge to cry, "I'll be fine once we find Leo and Raph." He said.
Don smiled, "We'll find them."
Mikey chuckled darkly, "Gotta say…Leo is one strong son of a bitch."
Don snickered, nodding his head, "Yes he is."
"You think this would all have been avoided if…if Leo never took that deal." Mikey asked.
Don thought about it quickly, what would have happened if Leo had just came home that day and told us everything right then and there? Would this all have been avoided? "We'll never know…but we gotta focus on what's going on right now. We have to find Raph and Leo and figure something out."
Mikey nodded, looking back at the sky, head slightly hurting from the grief.
"Bishop called me last night," Don said reluctantly, catching Mikey's attention quickly, "He tried telling me that Leatherhead's death was Leo's fault…that everything was Leo's fault. Tried turning me against him."
Mikey frowned angrily, turning his attention back to the street, "I hate that guy."
Don smiled softly, "You and me both buddy." He remarked. Mikey leaned back, "And to think…I was sort of sorry when I thought he was dead."
Don suddenly remembered that time, remember when Leo came home after Splinter died, with that damn suitcase, telling us that Stockman and Bishop were dead. Things seemed bad then, he never imagined that the situation would turn out like this.
"It's so weird…knowing that Saki is dead. And that Karai is kinda on our side."
Mikey continued talking, but Don wasn't paying attention to him, he was more focused on the black van that drove up to the apartment building. Don eyed it like a hawk, watching as tons of Bishop's men came out of the side, entering the building.
Don's heart sank as Mikey continued talking, "Mikey," Don said sharply. Mikey stopped talking, "What?" he asked, and then followed Don's gaze and saw the van.
"We have to get out of here."
…..
Raph perched himself on the gargoyle as he scanned the streets, looking the slightest sign on his brothers. He hadn't gotten a wink of sleep at all that night, he had spent every minute running the rooftops and searching for his brothers.
He had gone back to the farmhouse, hoping to find something. But the farmhouse was empty, destroyed. It broke Raph's heart to walk inside and see the farmhouse the way it was.
It seemed that Raph had nowhere else to turn, the farmhouse was destroyed, as was the lair. The only place he hasn't check was Aprils and Casey's apartments. Although he was slightly afraid to go to April's, after the note he left her on yesterday. She didn't deserve that, he felt sort of bad for leaving her alone like that. Everything was pretty messed up, they could have used each others help, but Raph got angry and bailed on her.
He shook his head, trying to forget as he scanned the roads, finding the quickest route to April's apartment. He slid his Sais out of his belt, took a deep breath and leapt off the gargoyle, plummeting in a dive toward the ground at speeds that made his heart race. He hasn't felt this kind of adrenaline in a long time, it made him feel like nothing in the world could touch him.
The ground was coming up fast, he had to make his move. He stuck his Sais out in front of him, eyeing the metal wire that connected between two buildings. The Sais made contact and he swung forward as he slid down the wire, sparks flew as the metal from his Sais scoured against the metal wire. The next building speeding toward him as he kicked himself off into a front flip and landed gingerly on the rooftop, catching his breath from the adrenaline.
He then kicked himself off into a full loaded sprint, sliding his Sais in his belt as he ran. He felt as peaceful as an eagle as he leapt off the building and onto the other. Even when the sudden thought of Leo or his brothers came to mind, he felt no grief. Nothing could tear him away from this feeling.
He jumped from the building onto a ladder, swiftly climbing up to the top. First thing he saw was April's apartment two buildings down. He stared at it, hoping to god that his brothers were in there.
He shook his head, wanting no distractions as he pushed forward toward April's apartment.
After one more leap through the air, Raph skidded along the surface of the apartment complex April resided. He quickly made his way toward the fire exit and scrambled down each step.
For some odd reason, he could feel his brothers' presence grow with every step he took. He grabbed April's window and pulled it open, crawling inside quickly, "Donnie!" He called quickly, "Mikey?"
There was no response.
Raph felt his happiness dwindle as he searched the empty apartment. "Anyone here?" he called. "April!"
His anger fought back through, as he stood alone in the living room, accepting the fact that it was empty. "Jesus Christ." He mumbled under his breath, slumping down into her chair. April's apartment was a dead end, and he only had one more lead. Casey's apartment, and he highly doubted they would be there.
But if they weren't there, where else could they be?
There was an abrupt break of silence that threw Raph out of his depression. He jumped to his feet and dashed into the bedroom, swinging to door to a crack. He glanced out and saw the front door be kicked open viciously.
Raph's heart sank when he saw three of Bishops men enter the apartment. "Find them." He growled.
Raph's stomach churned as he cursed softly and looked around the bedroom, finding a place to hide. He spotted the window and instantly got the idea.
….
Don rolled back on his shell and to his knees, then stood up and ran to the door. Mikey was right behind him, then stopped him, "Don wait!" He said, grabbing Don's bicep, "What are you doing? They're in there looking for us! We can't just barge into the place willy-nilly! They'll kill us!" Mikey quickly explained.
Don nodded, taking his hand off the doorknob, "But think about it…they came to Casey's apartment, not knowing we're here. They're not looking for us…they're looking for Casey."
Mikey felt his skin turn cold, "And if we happen to be here," Don continued, "…Well, that's just an added bonus for them."
Mikey lowered his head, then went to talk, but Don quickly placed a firm hand over his mouth, slowly lifting his finger to his lips. Mikey heeded the warning and listened, footsteps were coming up to the roof.
Don quickly flattened himself against the wall, slowly bending over to grab the long steel pipe that rested on the ground near the ledge. Mikey jumped up, grabbed the edge of the doorway and climbed up, waiting.
Don tensed up when the doorknob turned and the door flung open. The first guy walked out, gun at the ready.
Without hesitation, Don rammed the end of the pipe down onto the soldiers' foot, catching him off guard as he flipped in the air and kicked the gun out of his hand. By the time he was back on the ground, the solider had recovered and went to attack the turtle.
The second guy knew about the ambush and went to attack, without realizing the ninja above him. "Surprise!" Mikey shouted, jumping in the air and bringing both of his feet down on the back of the soldiers neck, knocking his helmet off and sending him to the ground. He rose his foot in the air and brought it down on the back of the guys' head, knocking him unconscious. Two more men went to walk out to the roof. Mikey quickly grabbed a nearby brick and hurled it at the first man, hitting him in the face and knocking him over.
Don twirled the steel pipe through his fingers and smacked the solider in the knee, causing it to buckle and send him to the ground. When he lifted his head to, Don slammed the end of the pipe on the ground, "Time for bed." He shouted, lifting himself in the air, swinging around the pipe and kicking the guy in the side of the head. The guy twitched a bit, and then fell limply to the ground.
Don took a breath, then glanced over at Mikey just in time to see him grab the helmet off the guy he already knocked out, throw it up in the air, turn around and launch himself into a backflip, kicking the helmet and sending it straight to the last soldiers head, knocking him out.
Mikey landed on his feet with grace, catching his breath. Don smiled and leaned on the lead pipe, "Nice form," He complemented, "But did that hurt?"
Mikey stood up, shaking his foot, "Like hell…but it looked cool, and that's all that matters."
Don shook his head and tossed the lead pipe on the ground, "Come on, we better go check on Casey." He said seriously, running past the bodies of the soldiers and hurrying to the fire escape. They climbed down a few stories and crawled back into Casey's apartment. Both flabbergasted.
"Careful Mikey," Don said quickly, "There's broken glass everywhere."
The glass table in the middle of his living room was shattered, one of Bishop's men laid dead in the middle of the remains. Two more were in the kitchen, one with a knife in his neck and the other laying in a puddle of his own blood.
"Oh no." Don said softly, Mikey quickly followed his glance and spotted Casey lying amongst the wreckage. Don quickly hurried to him while avoiding cutting himself on the glass.
He knelt down next to him and checked his pulse, "He's still alive." He said in relief.
"Thank god." Mikey said, scoping the place out, checking to see if they were safe.
"Don't worry." Casey sputtered, breathing sharply, "They took off."
"How you holding up Case?" Don asked.
He inhaled quickly, pushing himself up and leaning on the wall, "I've been better." He said.
Don took a look at his injuries, "Case I don't know if I can help you man, these injuries are to sever for me to treat without any of my equipment."
Casey laughed, coughing slightly while shaking his head, "Don't worry about me man, I could use a trip to the hospital." He said, grabbing his cell phone to call 911, "You guys should split though, I have no doubt that the cops are on their way."
"Dude…where are we gonna go?" Mikey asked darkly.
Don closed his eyes, shaking his head, "I don't know." He said, looking at Casey with worry, "Are you sure about this?"
Casey's breaths were short and ragged, he coughed, "Don't worry about me Donnie…take Mikey and get the hell out of here. If it were up to me, I would get out of New York."
"Casey…" Mikey whispered, "We can't leave Raph and Leo."
Casey nodded, "I know," He coughed, "Jesus…this is some situation we're in huh?"
Don nodded, "You can say that again."
Casey chuckled and patted Don shoulder, "Hey, everything will be fine. We always get through tough times. Just gotta-" He coughed, "Gotta keep our chins up."
Mikey lowered his head as Don stood up, "You sure you don't need anything else?"
Casey shook his head, "In an hour, I'll be sitting in my hospital bed, hopefully drugged up and sleeping the pain away. I'll be fine." He said. Don frowned, and then glanced at Mikey, "We'd better go."
Mikey nodded as Don and him went to the window.
"Take care of yourself guys." Casey called out with a faint smile.
Don and Mikey said their goodbyes, grabbed their weapons and went back on the fire escape, silent.
Neither knew what to say, they couldn't stay at Casey's anymore, they had…literally nowhere else to go. They stood at the top of Casey's building, staring at the New York sky, feeling…hopeless.
"What are we going to do?" Mikey asked.
Don sighed, shrugging, "I have no idea."
…
By the time Bishop's men finished searching the living room, kitchen and first bedroom, they entered the second bedroom. Raph stood still on the ledge directly outside of the window as he focused on listening to the men inside.
"Anything?"
"Nope, place is empty."
"Shit."
Raph leaned in to peek into the room, he saw two men standing there. "Heard anything from Alpha team?"
"They found Casey Jones, he was in his apartment. But no sign of the turtles."
"Did they apprehend Jones?"
"Don't think so, somehow Jones took on all of them and managed to stop most of them, as of right now he's still alive. The cops are on their way to him now, we can't touch him once they have him."
"Let them take him, he won't be a danger if he's hospitalized. But for now, we must focus on finding April O'Neil and the turtles. Leonardo is our prime target."
"Do we have any leads on where he might be?"
Raph leaned closer, hoping to get a location so he could beat Bishops men to Leo.
"As of right now no, but we have a location on Saki's daughter, Karai. Once we find her, we will find Leonardo."
"Then we better get to it."
Raph bit his lip, watching as the team regrouped and exited April's apartment. He waited until he saw the black van below leave before he felt sage enough to reenter the apartment.
Bishop's men were looking for Leo, and they had no idea where Leo was either. But they did know where Karai was, and she knows where Leo is.
Raph closed his eyes and took a deep breath, he had two objectives.
One…find Don and Mikey.
Two…Find Karai.
And he had a feeling he knew where he could find Karai…and maybe even Leo.
The foot building.
….
Don rubbed his chin, deep in thought.
"Whatcha thinking about?" Mikey asked.
Don sighed, "Here's the deal…" He began, "The lairs destroyed, Casey's apartment is out of the question, and I have no doubt that they checked April's apartment too. Farm house is gone."
"You're depressing me man"
Don ignored Mikey's remark and continued, "We're all separated, back at the farmhouse, we separated, you and Leo, Casey and I, and Raph and April."
"You think Raph and April are still together?" Mikey asked.
"No idea, now why did Leo and you separate?"
"I told you man, Leo and I ran, and then after that, I just woke up in the woods alone, that's when I found Casey."
"Alright, now why did Leo leave you? And a better question, where would he go?" Don asked, expecting a smart-ass remark from Mikey, but instead getting silence.
"Dude…remember when Leo killed Saki…when the foot ninjas all bowed to Leo?" Mikey asked.
Don's face flattened as the gears turned in his head. "What if Leo like…went back…to command the foot against Bishop."
Suddenly, Don's heart sank. He knew in his heart that Mikey was right, it the only thing that made sense. "Mikey…if you're right…" Suddenly, Don was at a loss of words. He walked to the ledge of the building and stared at the distant, but clear in view foot building. "Don?" Mikey called worriedly.
Don took a deep breath, "There's going to a war."
