Chapter Twenty One: Davis versus Gaara
Davis stared down Gaara who stared back, his sand swirling around him like a hungry beast ready to attack at a moment's notice.
"This is going to be a tough match," Kiba said, looking down at the two combatants. Naruto nodded his head, agreeing the Inuzuka's statement.
"Davis better be careful, if Gaara is what we think he is then Davis could get killed," Naruto said worriedly.
"I wouldn't be so sure about that," Both Genin heard a voice from behind them and they turned around to see Kakashi walking up to them.
"Kakashi-Sensei," Naruto said as Kakashi waved at the two of them.
"Sorry, Davis and I were late, we had to fit in some last minute training," the one eye Jonin told the two Genin, who looked at each other than down at Davis and Gaara.
"Did he get taller?" Naruto asked, slightly jealous.
"Slightly, but we mostly worked on his stamina and strength," Kakashi informed the duo. "Did you two win your matches?" he asked them, and they both nodded their heads.
"Yep, I kicked Neji's butt and Naruto just defeated Temari with a really cool move, what was it called again?" Kiba asked the blonde.
"The Rasengan!" Naruto chirped, and Kakashi's eye went slightly wide at this.
"The Rasengan, so Master Jiraiya taught him during the month, impressive," he thought to himself. Meanwhile, down below Davis and Gaara were still in a stare down, waiting for the go ahead from Haku.
"Now then, are you both ready?" Haku asked both Davis and Gaara.
"Bring it on," Davis said, his hand reaching for his tanto that was now on his back.
"Mother wants blood this day, and she will have it," Gaara said in a gravelly voice, and his sand rose up and started to swirl around him. Meanwhile, a dimension away, the DigiDestined were all sitting in Tai and Kari's living room as Izzy was typing on his laptop.
"Come on Izzy, hurry up," Tai said at the resident geek who looked back at him.
"I have almost got it, just a few more… bingo, got it," Izzy said as Tai's TV screen started to crackle with static before it cleared to show Davis and Gaara in the arena.
"Whoa is that Davis?" Matt asked in shock, looking at the mahogany haired boy.
"It is, just look how much he has changed over four months in that world," Ken commented.
"He actually looks hot now," Yolei remarked.
"Who is the redhead with the gourd on his back?" TK asked pointing towards Gaara.
"Must be his opponent, Gennai said Davis was in the finals of a promotion exam," Izzy said.
"He looks dangerous, and an insomniac," Joe said.
"I hope Davis will be okay," Kari said, and the others nodded their heads. Back in the dimension with Davis, Lee slowly made his way to the balcony on crutches.
"Lee!" Kiba called as the spandex wearing Genin limbed over to them.
"Hello my friends, am I too late?" he asked them.
"No, Davis and Gaara's match is about to start," Naruto told him.
"Good, I would like to see how my eternal rival stands up to Gaara," Lee said to him and Kiba who both nodded their heads as Gai walked up to Kakashi.
"So Kakashi, do you believe your student is up to the challenge of Gaara?" Gai asked Kakashi who looked down at both Davis and Gaara then up at Gai.
"Sorry you say something?" the laid back Jonin asked Gai who fell to the ground anime style.
"Go," Haku said, and the sand surrounding Gaara lunged towards Davis who jumped into the air and back flipped away from the sand. He landed in a crouch position and the sand came back around Gaara, and Davis looked into Gaara's eyes. Then in a blur Davis threw several shuriken towards Gaara, but his sand rose up and blocked them.
"So his sand is as fast as before, this is going to be a challenge," Davis thought to himself while looking at Gaara.
"Is that all you have?" Gaara asked him in a monotone voice, and Davis smirked slightly at him.
"Ha you wish, I was just getting warmed up," he told Gaara before his hands went through several handsigns. "WATER STYLE: LIQUID BULLETS!" Davis shouted as he fired a thick blast of water towards Gaara. The crazed Jinchurki's sand rose up to block the attack and succeeded. However, Davis followed up immediately with another attack even as the water collided with the sand barrier. "WIND STYLE: GREAT BREAKTHROUGH." A massive gust of wind hit Gaara's defensive wall, and the barrier held for a good few seconds. However, to almost everyone's shock, the sand was being eroded by the wind.
"How is he doing that, there's no way that just wind could get rid of that sand," Kiba exclaimed. Kakashi hummed for a second before responding.
"Smart move." Naruto and Kiba looked up at him. "Using a water jutsu against sand will clump the sand together and make it harder for Gaara to move around," he clarified.
Back on the arena's floor, Davis continued to fuel the wind jutsu. With a shout of added effort, Davis overpowered the sand wall and the wind blasted past it. The wind picked up Gaara and sent him flying backwards, and he slammed against the arena wall. As Gaara impacted, he abruptly burst into sand. "A sand clone!" Davis exclaimed in surprise. The mahogany haired Genin quickly looked around, hoping to pick up the real Gaara's position. Then, out of the corner of his eye, Davis saw a figure rise up out of the ground. "No sneak attack?" Davis taunted, having recovered his cool. "Is your sand too heavy to really use now?"
Gaara smirked. "I am not called Gaara of the Desert because I carry sand on my back," he rasped, a manic grin on his face. Davis suddenly blanched as waves of sand erupted from the ground all over the arena. "This entire time I was sending my sand into the earth to grind up the minerals to make more. So what if you soaked what I usually carry with me, I can command the earth. SAND TSUNAMI!" The accumulated sand moved into a massive wave the sped towards Davis who looked panicked.
Davis gulped before finding his resolve. There was no way he was going down here! "WIND ARMOR!" Davis yelled, and his whole body was engulfed with waves of wind. Even as he finished the jutsu, he began another one. "FIRE STYLE: DRAGON ROAR JUTSU!" A large torrent of fire that was vaguely shaped like a dragon flew from his mouth and collided with the incoming wave, slowing down the part immediately in front of Davis as it partially turned into glass.
Davis then flipped backwards towards the arena wall, and planted his feet on it. He narrowed his eyes, then blasted an enormous amount of chakra towards the wall from his feet. Davis was fired from the wall like from a canon, the wind currents still around him. Davis collided with the partially glassed section of the wave and burst through, the glass racking his entire body with thin cuts. Fortunately the worst of the glass and sand scraping was mitigated by the barrier of wind around his body.
"What the heck just happened?" Kiba asked in surprise.
"What happens when you superheat glass?" Kakashi asked him casually, and Kiba shrugged his shoulders.
"It turns into glass," Kakashi told him, and Kiba made an 'o' shape with his mouth and nodded his head.
"So Davis turned Gaara's sand into glass?" Naruto asked and Kakashi nodded his head. "Partially, enough to slow down that part of the wave."
Gaara had an expression of complete surprised on his face; he clearly never thought that Davis would actually break through. He quickly moved one of his hands and directed sand back towards Davis, but the Konoha Genin blurred forwards in a massive burst of speed. Gaara gasped in shock as he saw Davis appear above him and deliver a roundhouse kick that sent him sprawling across the arena floor. To make matters worse for the sand Genin, each hit was accompanied by burst of wind that sent Gaara flying even further.
"Whoa, he has gotten faster," Kiba gasped in shock, and Gaara tried to hit Davis with his sand again, but Davis again blurred from sight and dodged the sand. He appeared behind Gaara and the Jinchuriki's eyes widened.
"He is as fast as that one before," he thought to himself and he saw an image of Lee over Davis before he was punched in the face and his sand armour cracked slightly, and he was thrown backwards. The wet sand managed to cushion the landing and Gaara rolled across the ground.
"So you increased his speed over the month's training?" Gai asked Kakashi who nodded his head, agreeing with the spandex wearing Jonin. Meanwhile, back in the DigiDestined's dimension they were all watching the fight unfold, and were in shock at what Davis had been doing.
"Whoa, I never knew Davis could do that," Tai said in surprise, and the others nodded their heads.
"Yeah, but I don't think the fight is over yet," Matt replied, and sure enough Gaara slowly got to his feet and groaned.
"He has gotten stronger, more fun for me then," Gaara thought to himself. He sent the sand around the arena into a cyclone that began to surround Davis. "WIND STYLE: DESERT CYCLONE!" Even as the sand began to spiral around Davis, the boy had already pulled out a scroll with the kanji for 'water' on it. Davis channelled chakra into the scroll and a massive amount of water was released, flooding the bottom of the arena. He flew through handsigns.
"WATER STYLE: CASCADING WATERFALL JUTSU!" All of the water that covered the arena was sent skywards into a reverse waterfall that clashed directly with the sandstorm surrounding him. The two attack stalled for a second, and Davis grimaced. He was already feeling the effects on his chakra reserves, and wasn't sure how much longer he could maintain the jutsu. It was time to continue. "SHADOW CLONE JUTSU!" Davis yelled, and two clones appeared. Doing this, Davis stopped channelling the waterfall jutsu and the walls of water began to cave in. However, Davis was not going to wait for that.
"FIRE STYLE: DRAGON ROAR JUTSU!" Davis yelled, and spat a large blast of fire forwards.
"WIND STYLE: WIND DRAGON JUTSU!" another clone continued.
"LIGHTNING STYLE: THUNDER DRAGON JUTSU!" the third clone shouted.
"COLLABORATION JUTSU: THREE ELEMENTAL DRAGONS!" all of the Davis' yelled in unison, and an enormous blast of thunderous energy formed at the elemental dragons combined into an overwhelming assault. The ability to form collaboration jutsu was a rare and difficult skill, but while linking to his tailed beast, Davis could do it. The collaboration jutsu plunged towards and effortlessly swiped the remnants of the water wall and the sand cyclone aside and plunged into Gaara's current location. There was a scream, and then all of the sand faltered and fell to the ground. A silence echoed around the arena before Davis spoke up.
"How long are you going to play dead?" he asked casually. "I felt you dive underground just before the jutsu landed." A growl was heard around the arena.
"I will kill you," Gaara promised, and he burst from the ground in a flurry of sand. Despite his survival, Gaara's clothes were in tatters and the boy himself was badly burnt. Once again his sand began to rise in the air. Davis drew his tanto and it was engulfed in lightning chakra. He charged towards Gaara at great speed, but tripped on a tendril of sand that grabbed him and threw him towards more sand. Just as it seemed the sand would catch Davis, with a poof Davis was replaced with a log. The Konoha Genin reappeared near Gaara and swiped at him. The first slice came across Gaara's torso, but was foiled when the red-head took a surprised step back.
Davis followed up with a fast, thin attack across the stomach. This time, the lightning enhanced blade struck Gaara and cleaved through the sand armour with only a little resistance. Gaara screamed again as electricity was send into his body. A rising burst of sand forced Davis to once again use a substitution to escape, but not before the tanto was knocked from his grasp.
"SAND SHURIKEN!" Gaara yelled historically, and what seemed like a wall of sand shaped into sharp implements were sent soaring towards Davis. He went through another flurry of handsigns.
"WIND STYLE: GREATH BREAKTHROUGH!" Davis yelled, and he channelled a huge amount of his remaining chakra in a wave of wind to deflect the sand. Davis panted and fell to one knee, keeping an eye on the still panicking red-head.
With all of the Genin in the stands, they looked on in worry. Suddenly, a voice broke in. "Looks like things are getting seriously tense." Naruto, Kiba, and Kakashi turned to see Zabuza and Hikaru walk up to them.
"Zabuza?" Naruto asked, surprised to see the former missing ninja wearing a Jonin flak jacket and his sword back on his back.
"Long time no see brats," Zabuza said, standing beside Kakashi as did Hikaru who stood beside Gai and Lee.
"How strong do you think Davis is now Kakashi, you did train him for the last month?" Hikaru asked the one eyed Jonin.
"I would have to say he is as powerful as a Chunin maybe low Jonin," Kakashi replied and Naruto, Kiba, and Lee gasped in surprise. "Of course, don't get too excited. Gaara is clearly at the level of low Jonin, and that's before he uses his… more esoteric powers. Let's hope Davis is up to the challenge."
Back on the arena floor, Davis forced himself to his feet and began to run at Gaara again. An orb of sand engulfed the Jinchuriki, and his screaming finally stopped. Some sand formed into an eye that hovered over the sphere, keeping watch over Davis. Davis formed a barrier of wind around his fist and hurled a punch at the sand sphere. He grimaced as it impacted; if it wasn't for the limited wind armour he was using, the sand may have broken his hand.
"Davis, watch out!" Roken suddenly shouted towards him but it was too late, and Davis was partially skewered on spikes of sand that erupted from the orb, and Davis threw himself backwards. He landed a few dozen feet away, nursing more injuries. Davis idly wondered just how bad the puncture wounds were.
"Davis!" Naruto, Kiba and Sakura called out in shock, while Jun gasped in shock at what had just happened to her brother.
"Come on little brother, you can do this," she thought to herself, and Davis got to his feet.
"Okay, now I am angry," Davis thought to himself. "But I can be angry as much as I want. I don't have the chakra to do another collaboration jutsu, and losing my tanto limits my cutting and piercing power. Unless… Kakashi-sensei told me not to use it, but under the circumstances I'm not sure I have another option."
"How is Davis going to get through to Gaara if his sand keeps cutting him off?" Naruto asked from above
"I don't know…" Kakashi said quietly. "Unless… well, I'm sure that Davis will think of something. He's very versatile."
Up above, the Kazekage was livid. "I did not think he would be pushed this far, he will ruin my plan!" he thought to himself in anger.
"Be careful Davis, do not push it too hard, remember the last time you did that?" Wisp asked him, and Davis nodded his head.
"I know but I don't have a choice," he replied before he started to do handsigns and held his hand out. Lighting started to crackle in his palm and a chirping noise could be heard.
"That noise!" Kushina gasped in shock.
"Kakashi!" Zabuza said in shock.
"What, what's wrong?" Naruto asked him.
"That jutsu, it is Kakashi's very own creation, an A-rank assassination jutsu," Gai said looking at Kakashi.
"I told him not to use it," Kakashi said seriously. "He doesn't have the Sharingan and therefore will suffer from tunnel vision while using it. It was meant to be an exercise in manipulating elemental properties and form at the same time. However, he probably really doesn't have any other good options. As long as he gets close, he should be okay. And don't look at me like that, you taught Lee the eight gates which is endangering itself," Kakashi said as Davis looked down at his hand and smiled, seeing the jutsu was nearing completion.
"Almost there," he thought to himself. Meanwhile, back in the DigiDestined universe everyone was watching in anticipation.
"What is Davis doing?" Ken asked apprehensively.
"Looks like the final blow," Tai said as they all saw Davis burst forwards and charged straight at Gaara, lightning enclosed hand by his side.
"Whoa!" Kiba gasped in shock.
Davis charged at Gaara and sand spears flew right towards him but Davis swerved out of the way of each one. He neared Gaara's sand sphere and zoomed at the it, plunging his chidori deep into the barrier. Davis smirked as the sand shield fell, but that quickly turned into a gasp of shock as he saw what had become of Gaara. Gaara was now half consumed in sand, one of his arms had become a claw, his face was partially cracked and covered in sand, and he had a single tail waving back and forth. He was bleeding from the chidori's puncture wound, but sand wrapped around the injury, plugging it shut. The red head spoke.
"Nobody has been able to break through my shield of sand ever. As the first, I promise your death will be swift!"
"This kid is letting Shukaku take control," Kurama told Naruto, who nodded his head as Gaara lunged at Davis who in turn jumped into the air and avoided the attack, but Gaara threw a blast of sand at him and tossed him to the ground and Davis slammed into it hard and dropped his tanto again. Davis growled even as the sand all around him began to pick up again.
"Okay, he wants to fight me some more, then I will give him a fight!" he growled as spiral markings covered his entire body and his eyes became black with red eyes and slitted pupils. His teeth became fangs.
"Davis," Haku thought in shock.
"He has activated his curse mark, this will be interesting," the Kazekage thought to himself, and Davis and Gaara stared at each other.
"Come, make me feel alive!" Gaara shouted.
"Gladly!" Davis roared, charging at him. Gaara sent a moderate wave of sand towards Davis, but he jumped over the attack and delivered an axe kick to Gaara's sand arm which cushioned the blow, and Davis then punched Gaara in the face. The force of the enhance fist sent Gaara flying backwards and crashing into a wall of his own sand. Davis growled and waited for Gaara to reappear. It was only a few moment later that Gaara's form was once again clear, and the Jinchuriki lunged back at Davis who jumped out of the way and landed back several feet.
"Time to end this!" Davis growled, and he held his hand out and purple and black lightning started to arc from his hand.
"That is new," Kakashi said as Davis charged towards Gaara who sneered, before returning the charge, claw straight out.
"ULTIMATE ATTACK: SHUKAKU SPEAR!" The clawglowed and formed into a spear form even as it collided with Davis' attack.
"CHIDORI!" Davis shouted, and he and Gaara passed each other. A moment later, a massive gash opened up across Davis' outstretched arm, causing it to flop to the side uselessly. Gaara's sand arm flew off and crashed into the ground.
"Interesting, Davis Motomiya. Very interesting! It's time for you to die!" But before Gaara could follow up on his words, feathers began to fall from the sky and explosion echoed around the arena.
"What now?" Davis asked in shock and worry.
