Chapter 21
Granger
"I heard about the stunt that you pulled, and Uriah is pissed. He was going to yell at you about it but he figured that you would get an earful from Four and Tris. So I guess all I want to say is, welcome." Jared says plopping his ready l tray in front of me. It's filled to the brim with food, not that he'll eat it all.
Jared is being extra cocky about something this morning, probably my sour attitude. Anyone's attitude would be sour after all the sit I went through this weekend. "Enjoying the life I live? Being in trouble, it will help you get the girls. But I know what it's like to be grounded once then get into more trouble and get grounded again. It's kinda fun after a while. Though you need to learn how to have fun without getting caught." He continues.
Talking to him right now is almost as bad as my father pulling me out of bed when I have a hangover and making me run five miles with him. Then I went through the head splitter of a lecture about drinking. Four really knows how to be evil.
"What do you want Jett?" I growl venomously, only causing the jack ass to smirk even more.
"Nothing, I'm just spending time with my best friend."
"Really?"
"Yeah, after the stunt you pulled, you'll need them."
I roll my eyes. "I won't need any friends, I'll be fine with the ones I have."
"Oh really?" He fires back. "You and all your friends here are going to help you. The table was empty when I came here. In case you haven't noticed Eaton, but you lost the title of golden boy here. No one wants anything to do with you not even your own sister."
"Don't bring her into this. And I'm not an Eaton, I'm a Prior."
"Close enough. Let's face it Prior I'm all the friend that you have here. Take it or leave it." He growls at me, I glare back challenging him. I'm not afraid of him, I can easily fight him. Fights here are a usual occurrence, the teachers actually encourage it. I wouldn't be in trouble here, but at home, I can't do anymore runs at 5 in the morning.
I'm not the first to look away, but he certainly isn't either.
Aaralynn slows down to walk besides me as we make our way home from school. "I know how where going to win our parents back." She says in a low voice so Jared and Cassie won't hear us.
"How?"
"There is a school trip to the Convergent headquarters, tomorrow. We overheard the computer geeks talking about it, there will be a time square where all the security is down. I think we can use that to our advantage."
Aaralynn is right, that will definitely win our parents back to our good graces. It's genius even. I'm still trying to win over my father's trust, and maybe giving them this information will help. "Aaralynn," I wrap my arm around her shoulders and pull her in. "Little sis, let's call a big family meeting. The kids are running this operation."
She unlocks the door to the house and I let her in first. "Mom?" I shout through the house.
"I'm a bit busy right now, what do you need Spencer?" Someone is here she never calls me Spencer around here. Aaralynn looks at me and she sets her book bag down in the corner.
"Never mind it can wait until Dad gets home." I say and head upstairs. I'm halfway up when I look back down at the entry way, Aaralynn is still there. "Well are you coming? I need someone to help me with this plan. I'm not very good at making posters."
"Fine, but help me with my biology, and I'll do it. I'm going to call over Cassie to help because she has most of the info."
Cassie? Yes, that definitely works for me. "Yeah sure, I'll just get my the computer up and you go get Cass. Do you have any poster board?"
She rolls her eyes. "Yeah I do, I have some behind my dresser. I'll go get it after I get Cassie."
I nod, and head up to my bedroom to get the stuff up. According to the school website, the field trip is taking place at 10. So then I google the exact time estimate to get to the Convergent headquarters from the school. 17 minutes. Give an extra 4 minutes to load buses, were working with 21 minutes. Leaving the school at 9:45, we should be at the headquarters at exactly 10:06. The time from our house to the headquarters is 9 minutes, allowing two extra minutes for traffic, all of this could work.
"Hey are you ready?" Aaralynn asks, knocking before she enters. Only one who really does.
"Yeah, yeah, here I got it all figured out." I beckon her in and spin around in my desk chair. Cassie stands behind her looking everywhere, but not me. "Hey Cassie."
"Hey." she simply says looking at the ground. Jared appears behind her with poster board and markers.
"Hey buddy, let's get started." He says smirking at me, then pushes between the two girls and then pushes me out of my chair. "I'll do all the computer work, I'm the computer geek."
After an hour and a half of working, we have the whole presentation planned out to Christina and Tris standards. Clean to the eye and factual.
"Mom are you still busy?" I ask heading down the steps.
"No why?"
"Good, hey are you still meeting Uriah and Christina tonight?"
"They just got here, why?"
"Perfect, and Dad should home in a few minutes?"
"Yes, Granger. What is this about?"
I walk into the kitchen and grab a grape juice. She stands behind the counter making dinner. "You'll see, I promise it will be worth it."
"Better be, I'm missing my show for this." Uriah mumbles.
"It will be, I promise."
I run upstairs, back up to my room. Ready for the plot to begin.
Like clock work my father comes home at 6:00. Nothing unusual, but he has a person with him. One of the guys that broke into our house not too long ago. I think his name was Peter. "Hey Granger." My father mumbles as I come down the stairs, Cassie and Jared in tow. Aaralynn is already down there getting ready to take her medicine.
"Hey, what is he doing here?" I ask venomously. Peter smirks loving the situation.
"You know Four he reminds me of you. Obviously he has your charm."
"Stop taking will you?" My father pushes him into the dining room and towards the kitchen. We follow him in there and everyone makes disgusted noises about Peter.
"What the hell is he doing here?" Christina says on her feet, looking straight at him.
"Hello Christina, always a pleasure. I was invited, by Tris and Uriah. I was about to knock and come in, but Four beat me here and let me in." He turns to my father who stands behind him. "There, now you can't beat the crap out of me."
"Why was he invited?" My father asks pushing Peter forward.
"Hey man. I'm a grown man, not one of your initiates that you can beat the crap out of. I have a family, if I come home all beaten and bruised, my wife isn't going to be happy."
"He was invited because he knows something that we don't. He knows who the agency's leak is. He's going to tell us, and he's going to make sure our plan works. Right Peter?" My mother says totally ignoring what Peter said before.
"Yeah your leak. Make sure you tell Miguel that I told you this stuff, I need a raise."
"Yeah we'll tell Miguel a lot of things."
Peter rolls his eyes. "Your leak is Quinn Teathers. She's been hiding out in that house behind yours taking pictures of your 'families' and reporting everything to the Convergents. She's good too, had Al going about a lot of things for a while."
I watch my mother's brain reel, trying to think of Quinn. "I don't know Quinn, that had to be an alias. You don't know her real name?"
"No honestly, I thought you would know her."
"Great." Uriah starts. "We have a total dead beat for an agent, and we don't know who the leak is. Someone better come up with a genius plan, or else Chicago is screwed. I heard today they were preparing for destruction this week."
I look at Aaralynn and my father, both of them frozen. Jared and cassie go pale, as well as Christina. "We actually do." I say softly, stepping forward. "That's why everyone was supposed to be here. Well everyone but Peter." I look behind me. "Cassie? Do you want to explain it?"
She's frozen for a second then nods. "Yeah, yeah. Um...there is a school field trip to the Convergent headquarters. We figured it out, or math may be a little off, but there will be low security for this event."
"That means no passwords, no I.D. scanning, and no genetic scanning on the first 4 floors for exactly 3 hour and 37 minutes. They want to keep that all off while they have trained assassins and hackers that can mess anything up fast, in the same building." Jared says grabbing the poster from Cassie's hands. "The routes from here take exactly 9 minutes to get there. The route from school will take exactly 17 minutes. Each of those times are given for traffic, a minute at each stop light. So they should be exact."
"There will also be two teachers gone tomorrow, that allows for two subs to be with us. We chose Christina and Tris for those positions because they were the easiest to work with. Tris will be, Mrs. Prior and Christina would be Ms. Anderson. We just used your real names considering they were easiest to work with, and you shouldn't be made fun of because they're normal." Aaralynn takes over for Jared grabbing the map of the school. "Your classrooms will be here and here. In each one, you will have two of us. It will be your job to mark us gone that day, so when we don't return from the field trip, it won't be noticed by the school. You two are disposable by the school. Our other teachers will return for the afternoon, to teach. Let's just say, we have that all taken care of already." She moves the school map. "Uriah and Dad, will get in with us, because you were 'needed' by the Convergents. It's important that you get there at the same time at the buses or it will ruin the whole plan. Then while we are on our little trip, you will follow the group's sound at a safe distance. Avoid being on floor 4 because all the business groups will be there, and you might be recognized."
Cassie takes over again. "Then we'll all meet here at 1:30." She says pontoon at the map. "Conference room B, it's on floor 2 in hallway number 5. At exactly 2:36 all the security will be restored. There, we will get our I.D. cards to help us get into the higher floors. We will break up into two teams, Jared and I will be with Uriah and Christina. We will be in charge of covering the west side of the building. Making distractions. Uriah, it would be your job to fire 3 blanks, and then Four, Tris, Granger, and Aar will go to the east side. Security there will be fewer after those shots are fired. Since this team had the more experienced shooters, do what you have to. Floor six is thought to have Josiah's office. Getting up there will be difficult. I would say that you would have top be prepared to go throw the air vents. Still small, but spacious. It's rumored that they keep laser beams in the vents, if disturbed, the whole building goes under immediate lock down, and you will be hunted."
Cassie nods at Aaralynn who continues. "Josiah's office has top security standards, so we will need Zeke to override the system and switch the footage. I think I remember you saying that you two done that plenty of times before, Dad."
"No one can go off on their own. Security will kill you if your found alone. It's dangerous, but I think we can handle it. We've been trained at school for stuff like this." Jared concludes, looking at the adults who looks back at us, wide eyes.
After some time, there is clapping, by Peter of all people. "Wow, who knew, the orphan, the golden boy, the dying girl, and the juvenile delinquent could all come together to do this. I will admit, that their plan is genius. It has a few flaws, minor, but they won't kill you. Most plans don't go as planned anyway. This one just might work."
"Yeah, it could." My mother says looking at me, smiling. "It's almost fool proof."
"When does this all happen?" Uriah asks.
I'm the one to answer that, with a smile on my face. "Tomorrow."
