A\N: Thank you so much for all of the support this story has received. This chapter is a little different then most but the idea suddenly popped into my head while updating my planning web. I have an idea to tie the two major storylines somewhat together for the last stretch of the story (probably only 10-15 chapters left).

Chapter 21

Holding both Eva's hands in his Antonio helped his daughter take a few small steps. She'd been standing up on her own for a few weeks and seemed eager to learn how to walk.

"Baba," She plopped down on her bum and crawled towards Gabby's old doll, her current favourite toy. She had been to see her aunt once a week ago and had grabbed the doll. She'd then started crying when prompted to put it back on the bed.

"Yeah that's your baby doll," Antonio told her smiling as she hugged it and gave it plenty of kisses. She had lots of other toys, especially dolls but he found it sweet that she loved Gabby's old one, that had been the main reason he'd let her keep it. That and he knew Gabby wouldn't mind. She loved Eva.

"Ga?" She looked up at her father, "Gabby? Dada?"

"Auntie Gabby's still in the hospital baby girl," He sat down on the floor and placed her in his lap. "She still needs lots of rest."

She frowned and hugged the doll even closer. The doll never left her side and when she was sad she held it even closer. Just as the tears began to fall from her brown eyes the doorbell rang. Being the social little girl she was she began crawling after her father to answer it. She sat nicely while her father checked who it was and answered it.

"Matt?" Antonio looked at his sister's friend, his detective instants taking over; he had bruises on his face and hidden ones under his shirt. "Come in!" He ushered the young teen into the house and shut and locked the door, "What happened? And don't say you ran into a door?"

"Matt!" Eva interrupted the adult conversation as she happily squealed at him. "Uppie?" She held out her hands and looked up at him.

"Hey look at you talking," He grinned, "I missed you. Can I…" He looked at Antonio.

"Sure," He nodded and Matt bent down and picked Eva up the infant giving him kisses and giggling as he tickled her.

"Now tell me what happened," He prompted, "Was it your father?"

"Maybe," He lowered his head to the floor, "I don't even know why I'm here. I tried to see Gabby yesterday but I just couldn't do it."

"You need ice," Antonio motioned to him to follow him into the kitchen, "Now I can help you Matt but I'm not a mind reader."

"He didn't like me going to see Gabby," He didn't directly answer the question, "I was out all day and I worried my Mom. I mean she already has enough to worry about with my sister not being able to afford college on her own. I shouldn't have been gone all day, I was supposed to be at a friends house but…"

"It's not your fault," He assured him, "Now are your mother and sister in danger?"

"Maybe…. But my Mom won't do anything. She won't tell you anything. My older sister pretends it doesn't happen so she won't be much help."

"We can talk to them."

"But my Dad will know I talked."

"No, no he doesn't need to know," He told him, "I can cover for you say I suspected something and then saw the bruises. No one has to know you said anything unless you want them too."

"But you have to report it?"

"I'm sorry Matt I do need to call Child Services."

"I understand," Matt nodded his head, "Do I need to stay here or can I go?"

"No!" Eva began to cry loudly, "Matt!" She gripped onto him tightly.

"Princess Eva has spoken," Antonio lightly joked as he reached for the phone, "Stay here; maybe we can go and visit Gabby later."

"Alright," He stood with Eva in his arms and carried her into the family room where all of her toys were. He didn't want to hear the phone call.

Sitting on the carpet Matt watched Eva crawl out of his lap and over to where her dolls were. She got one and carried it back to him, "Matt," She handed it to him with a smile.

"Oh you want to play dolls?" He asked, for the first time grateful his older sister had forced him to play with her when they were younger.

She nodded her head and began babbling as she moved her doll around.

"Well hi," Matt spoke in a funny voice, "What's your name?"

Eva broke out into giggles and clapped her hands, "Matt!"

"It's just us Antonio!" John, Laura's father called out as he and Melissa walked into the house. At Laura's insistent they spend the day doing tourist type things in the city instead of looking after Eva. She was at the hospital sitting with Gabby and Antonio had three days off of work.

"Gama, Grpa!" Eva squealed with excitement and began bouncing up and down looking at Matt.

Matt for his part was frozen. They were obviously Laura's parents but they didn't know him, what would they think if they saw him with Eva.

"Oh, hello, Melissa stopped in the entrance of the family room, "I don' t think we've met."

"No Ma'am," He shook his head, "My names Matt Casey, I'm Gabby's boyfriend. Detective Dawson said he'd take me to visit Gabby so I-"

"Melissa, John," Antonio walked into the hallway, "How was your day?" He had always been quite nervous around his in-laws even though Laura assured him over and over again that they indeed liked him.

"It was good son," John replied, "We were just meeting this young man. Very polite."

"Yeah Matt's a good kid. Actually it's a good thing you came. I'll explain later but I need to take Matt somewhere so can you watch Eva."

"No!" Eva shook her head sobbing, "No!"

"I'm sorry sweetie," Antonio picked her up and kissed her, "You be a good girl for Grandma and Grandpa. I'll be back soon."

She sniffled into her father's shirt.

"Hey sweetie," John spoke to his granddaughter, "I know its not your birthday or Christmas yet but we bought you something," He pulled out a teddy bear from a bag.

"Ooh!" She reached for the bear.

"You don't have-"

"I know we don't Antonio but we want to," Melissa reached out to take Eva and the girl sat somewhat contently in her grandmother's arms.

"Okay," Antonio gave Eva another kissed, hugged his mother in-law and shook his father in-law's hand. "Thank you."

"Come on Matt," Antonio led the boy out of the house and towards his car.

"Where are we going?" Matt asked.

"Your house, something has happened."
