Blindsided: Chapter Twenty-One

"Inuyasha, as your closest friend; I beg you to reconsider." Miroku begged his hanyou friend from his place seated across the table. It had been two nights since Kagome had revealed her past connection with Inuyasha. It also marked two days since Sango had begun to ignore his calls and text messages.

"Miroku why are you here?" Inuyasha grumbled in an irritated tone. "I told you I wanted to be alone."

"I'm here because you're my best friend, and I want to make sure you make the proper decisions regarding Kagome." Miroku explained.

"Leave Kagome out of this; it's none of your damn business." Inuyasha snapped, "Where's your girlfriend? Shouldn't you be somewhere with her?"

Miroku gave a simultaneous sigh and chuckle. "My dear Sango is upset with me, and had refused to answer my calls."

"Why?" Inuyasha asked in slight curiosity.

Miroku shrugged, "I haven't talked to her since that night. Though I do believe it has something to do with my feelings towards Kagome that night."

"Yeah you were being an asshole." Inuyasha huffed. He was sitting across from Miroku in his signature position.

Miroku's frowned in disbelief, "How am I the bad guy here?" He asked pointing dramatically to himself. "Kagome chose to drive drunk and killed somebody! That somebody being your girlfriend, I might add. She also almost killed you as well!"

Inuyasha massaged his temple in an attempt to calm his growing attitude. Miroku may have been his closest friend, but right now he was really pissing the hanyou off.

"It's like that story you told about the Shira chick." Inuyasha stated slowly.

"Who?" Miroku asked with knitted eyebrows.

"The wench that accused you of rape or whatever," Inuyasha pressed with heavy agitation. He was losing his patience with the younger man, and desperately wanted to get his point across before he blew up.

"You mean Shima; and it wasn't rape." Miroku corrected his friend, slightly offended. "And what about her?"

"You said you didn't want her punished because she'd already been through enough in her life." Inuyasha reminded him. His eyes were closed and his head was tilted against the wall behind him.

Miroku opened his mouth for a rebuttal, but quickly reconsidered. Shima hadn't killed or harmed anyone physically, but she had made a mistake. What Kagome did was an accident, and judging by her current mental state, compared to the vibrant girl Sango used to describe when she talked about her best friend, he could tell she was suffering.

He gave a reluctant sigh. "You're right."

"I know I am. Now can you please leave?" Inuyasha rudely responded.

"Thank you for meeting with me today." Officer Okano bowed to Kagome as she walked into his office. "Water? Coffee? Tea?"

"What did you call me here for?" Kagome asked, shaking her head to decline his offers.

"I spoke with Inuyasha today." Okano paused and studied her reaction just for the fun of things. She looked genuinely concerned. "He said he wasn't pressing charges and for me to leave."

To his surprise Kagome continued to frown. "Why?"

"I didn't ask, Kagome. He said no, so I left." Okano stated nonchalantly. "You don't seem too happy with that."

"I don't deserve to walk away free of repercussion." Kagome explained. She stood to leave in an almost robotic state.

"Ms. Higurashi." Okano called to her has she opened the door. She didn't turn to face him but haulted her movements, so he continued. "We found Ken. He was in the hospital. He'd appeared to have been savagely beaten."

Kagome didn't respond. She only continued to walk out of his office.

Kagome didn't even bother trying to save face for her family during dinner. She couldn't hold in her pain for much longer. Mama had been so happy Inuyasha had decided to not press charges and have Kagome arrested. She kept saying that meant his feelings for Kagome still remained.

"Mama, please." Kagome begged mother to stop, as her mother continued to suggest her daughter go and visit the man she loved.

"Kagome he loves you still. I know does," Mama began but was interrupted by Kagome abruptly standing to leave. "Where are you going?"

"I need to think Mama." Kagome stated as she left the table. Souta and Jii-Chan ate quietly as Mama watched Kagome retreat up the stairs.

Once upstairs Kagome slammed her door shut and locked it. She couldn't think straight with Mama going on about Inuyasha and his supposed love for her. He couldn't love her anymore. She'd taken so much from him; not only Kikyo, but the baby too.

She wondered what he was like before the accident. Was he happy with her? Was he overcome with joy at the thought of becoming a father? She remembered the day her parents brought Souta home from the hospital after he was born. He father was so happy. He held Souta on in his arms while Kagome sat perched on his lap.

Had Kikyo and Inuyasha felt that joy when they found out they were expecting?

How could she come into his life and pursue a relationship with him, after ending his last one so tragically?

As the thoughts swarmed Kagome's head, she didn't even notice she was sobbing uncontrollably. Her whole body felt numb.

She was so tired. Not sleepy per say; just tired.

She just needed to fall as sleep and forget everything.

Mama kept sleeping pills in the cabinet. She took them rarely; usually when she was having one of her migraines.

Just a few of those should do the trick right?

Kagome crept down the hallway to her mother's bathroom and retrieved the bottle, before sneaking back into her room.

She emptied the bottle onto the floor and watched the small white tablets scatter at her crossed legs. She thought of every amazing memory she shared with Inuyasha, like seeing him for the first time.

With that thought she picked up a pill and swallowed it dry.

She thought of the time she fell while dusting his bookshelf and him catching her bridal style before rudely dropping her to the floor.

Another pill.

Seeing him perched on the roof trying to sniff her out; eagerly awaiting her arrival.

Another pill.

When he saved her from those attackers in Shinjuku, and they seemingly flew across the rooftops.

Another pill.

The first night he kissed her after she'd presented him with the birthday cake she had made him.

Two pills.

She thought about his voice as he told her "I love you Kagome," and swallowed another few sleeping pills. She was beginning to see double.

Her mind wandered to their lovemaking; the way he held her and the sounds they made as they moved together. His proposal of marriage, which she had declined. Three more pills.

An image of her father smiling at her invaded her mind as she collapsed to the floor.

He could feel her turmoil from outside of her home. He sat expertly balanced on one of the many branches of the Goshinboku. She was crying and he could feel it.

But then suddenly her breathing aura depleted.

She had fallen asleep most likely. He recognized the shift after nights of following her home and then sitting in the sacred tree and feeling her aura. It was comforting to him.

Though this drop in aura was different.

He had an eerie feeling as he thought about the last time he'd felt an aura deplete that suddenly.

It had been Kikyo's that time.

Inuyasha shook the thoughts from his head. She had fallen asleep. She was probably exhausted from all of the crying. That was all.
