1 month later.
Amy was flipping through a magazine on the kitchen table. She didn't know how to pass time, she had quit college after Christmas, in order to prepare for the arrival of her baby. Her original plan was taking the rest of the year off, and then, repeat her year afterwards. But her plan failed, neither was she having a baby, nor going back to college. So until her scholastic year comes to an end, she was currently staying at home.
Jac put a cup of tea in front of her, as she sat down beside her with hers. Amy kept flipping through the pages when she paused and took a very long look at one of the pages. She was almost staring at it, when Jac interrupted her thoughts.
"Amy… your tea is going to go cold…" Jac told her.
"Mm," Amy made a sound as she lifted her face, then down at the page again.
Jac snatched the magazine from her hands to see what she was staring at. She then realised why Amy fell silent all of a sudden. It was an advert showing a woman cuddling a baby, advertising cots, prams and other baby stuff.
"I think you've had enough of that," Jac said, as she closed the magazine and put it to a side.
"You know, Harry and I even chose a name," Amy said, slowly as she sipped her tea, "we were thinking about James…"
"James Byrne…" Jac uttered, she didn't know what to say really.
"well…. James Byrne Maconie…" Amy added, "speaking of Maconie… dad sent me a text yesterday…"
"Really? what did he say?" Jac asked curiously. He called frequently to talk to Amy, and then while he's at it, he used to talk a bit to Jac, but only briefly, not to mention he was keeping his distance on the ward.
"Nothing special, just to ask how I'm doing and the usual…" Amy replied.
"I wasn't going to tell you, but I think I have to…" Jac began.
"Tell me what?" Amy asked.
"Well your dad, is not working on Darwin anymore… he got transferred to another ward… which was upon his request…" Jac explained slowly, as she sipped her tea.
When Amy was discharged from hospital and sent home, Jac and Jonny both explained the whole situation and how they decided that Jonny was going to leave them for a while. She wasn't happy at first, but still she chose to live with Jac. Amy didn't know what to say, but then opened her mouth to speak.
"Mum… do you think you're getting a divorce?" she asked, quite sadly.
"I don't know, this is just a break, to see how we get on without one another… but by the looks of it, your father wants to stay away from me as far as possible…" Jac said, with her own words crushing her inside.
Amy looked at the floor and didn't say a thing.
"Look Amy, I'm not proud of what I did, I didn't mean for any of this to happen, and the last person I ever wanted to hurt, was you…" she told her daughter as she held her hand. But their heart-to-heart moment was soon interrupted when the doorbell rang.
…
"Harry… I haven't heard from you, for quite a while," Jac greeted Harry on her doorstep, in quite an angry tone. He hadn't been over to check on Amy since the death of their son, not even once.
"In my defence, I tried to contact Amy but she didn't want to speak to me, and I was afraid of coming knocking on your door… we obviously need to fix this, so would you let me talk to her… please?" Harry explained.
"Come in…" Jac sighed, as she shut the door behind him.
"Amy, someone's here to see you…" she told Amy as Harry walked behind her into the kitchen. Amy lifted her head up, stood up and walked out of the kitchen, down the hall and into the living room.
"Amy you can't keep shutting me out!" Harry told her as he followed her. Jac decided to give them some space, hoping they could sort things out.
Amy sat down on the sofa, looking at the floor. Since she delivered her still born son, Harry tried calling her, texting… but she ignored him the whole time, she wanted to be alone.
Harry sat beside her, but he couldn't take it anymore, "Amy why are you doing this to us? It's not my fault our son died… I lost him too you know…" he began slowly.
"Oh you have a funny way of showing it…" Amy uttered, now facing him, "not even at the hospital, I haven't seen you shed, not even one tear…"
"You think I wasn't grieving? I did it in silence… but it doesn't mean I didn't care…" Harry spoke in his defence, "with all respect, Amy, it's been a month, we can't bring him back, we have to move on now…"
"Seriously? it's that easy for you is it? Well I guess it's because you weren't the one carrying him inside of you for 6 months…" Amy exploded, as she stood up.
"Amy please.." Harry interrupted her.
"No, Harry, every time I felt him kick or move inside of me, I used to feel flutters of joy, knowing that someone's actually in there… it felt real… I couldn't wait to meet him, to hold him…" Amy explained.
"I understand…" Harry said.
"No, clearly, you don't… and quite frankly, I am starting to doubt, if you stayed with me because of the baby…" Amy said slowly, as she faced the window.
"Are you serious? Amy, I love you… and yes I was scared when you told me you were pregnant, but I tried to make it work, and I've been there for you…." Harry said slowly, as he stood up.
Amy didn't say a word. Then Harry added, "well, maybe this is a sign…"
"a sign of what?" Amy asked him, as she turned around.
"about us.. maybe we're not meant to be…. Maybe your mum was right, when she didn't want us dating a couple of months ago…" Harry said, "not to mention, my family would have still been together…"
"How dare you?! So you're blaming us for your family splitting up? why don't you go tell your dad that?!" Amy yelled at him.
Just at that moment, Jac burst into the room, "okay, I could not help but over hear the yelling… and Harry just so you know, nobody talks to my daughter like that! I know, I made a mistake, and believe me I am suffering the consequences, but your dad is to blame too in this, it's not just me... and you know, quite frankly, I think Amy is better off without you, clearly, you can't deal with your family's separation and I don't want you taking it out on her…" Jac said as she folded her arms.
"Ms Maconie please..." Harry uttered. Amy stood silent, with tears running down her face.
"No, it's too much… now please leave my house…" Jac said, slowly.
Harry furiously, left the room and showed himself out the door. Amy, crying, fell into her mother's arms.
"Shhhh, come here," Jac comforted her daughter, as she hugged her and stroked her hair.
"This is all my fault…" Amy said, sobbing.
"No," Jac said, pushing her away and holding her at arms' length, wiping tears off her face, "listen to me, James's death was not your fault, it was nobody's fault, if there's someone that has to feel guilty, it's me… and I promise, I am going to fix this…" Jac said, as a tear rolled down her cheek.
