The final chapter. This is where the journey ends. So this is it. The end of the story. It may not be particularly spectacular or sad, but that's reality (says the girl who wrote about magic and centaurs). Thank you for being with me up until the end. I don't know if I'll write another story in this fandom, I doubt it. So sweet farewells to you all and have a good life.
Thank you to narnias no.1fan and PopRockShawty for reviewing. Along with everyone else who has supported this story in any manner. Thank you and this is my 'goodbye gift' to you.
It was too familiar for Edmund, Lucy and Eustace. This was the third time that they had been sucked through the painting. They could only wish that their journey now lead to a happier place, one not filled with the sorrow and tension of the modern world. It appears that their wishes came true for they were taken to Aslan, a being by whose side sorrow was a rare occurrence. A tame lion he is indeed.
They wake up laying on the soft grass and their eyes slowly bat open. Each being is in their original form once again. Reepicheep is pleased to be a mouse once again, swishing his tail from side to side. He had missed this feeling. Tumnus is a faun once again, he reminds himself inwardly to never agree to be a teenage Son of Adam again; he has missed his hooves too much. Oreius is also a centaur, he smiles widely as he trots in the open space, to focused on how wonderful it feels to be back to notice his surroundings.
The humans wake, Susan still in her younger form, and gaze at their surroundings, a sense of familiarity clouding their mind. They are surrounded by relatively small, round pools.
"Edmund...I think this is the Wood Between Worlds" said Lucy, gaining the attention of the others, who were previously to enraptured by their appearances to notice the land that they were in.
"I think so too, Lucy. It does have an overwhelming similarity to the descriptions..."
"What's the Wood Between Worlds?" asked Pietra, who had recovered since her journey from Earth.
"Pietra! Susan! You're alright!" Lucy shrieked as she ran to the two and hugged them.
"I thought you may have been lost to us for a while there." said Eustace as he walked over to the two previously unconscious girls who appeared to be unscathed.
"Indeed. You must never do that again. It gave us a terrible fright." said Tumnus, still relishing in the feeling of having hooves once again.
Pietra stood up and walked towards Edward, noticing how quiet and reserved he was being, "Hey Eddie, what's up?" she asked. Without warning he pulled his sister into an embrace and clasped her tightly.
"I thought...You almost..." he began before feeling himself choke up and begin to cry lightly. Pietra pulled herself slightly out of the embrace and looked Edward in the eyes.
"Precisely. It only almost happened. I'm fine now though, and so are you. We're all ok and that's all that counts."
"You speak wisely, Pietra." Pietra span around to see Aslan behind her, a smile on his face. "You have truly overcome your demons, young one." Pietra, was too stunned to say anything and watched in awe as Lucy ran to the lion, hugging him tightly.
"I thought I'd never see you again." Lucy whispered to Aslan.
"You're only to look for me and you shall find me." Upon hearing this Lucy hugged him tighter.
"Aslan...I am sorry. For all I did and for how I tried to forget." Susan confessed.
"Times were difficult and you have more than redeemed yourself. You have done well on Earth and found your true home. You have nothing to apologise for, you were forgiven long ago." Pietra and Edward hugged their grandmother as tears of joy fell from her eyes.
"Th-Thank you Aslan." The lion smiled in response.
"Tumnus, Reepicheep, Oreius; I thank you for your efforts in aiding the protection of Earth. You have shown, once again, your nobleness and loyalty."
"We did what we could to protect our Kings and Queens." replied Reepicheep.
Aslan chuckled, "Forever modest and chivalrous I see, Reepicheep. Anyway, it is time for you all to return to your homes. Reepicheep, Tumnus, Oreius, Peter; it is time for you to return to my country. Susan, you may join them if you wish."
Susan looked at her grandchildren, asking for their permission. "Go on Gran," said Edward, "You've been waiting long enough." Susan smiled at her grandchildren and kissed them both on the forehead.
"I will always love you and be with you in your hearts." she said to both as she walked to Aslan's side, he ushered them into one of the pools and they disappeared into them.
"Edmund, Lucy, Eustace; you too must return to your time." At this point Lucy had tears in her eyes, she did not wish to leave her modern friends...her family.
"Don't have too much fun without us." joked Edmund as he said goodbye to Pietra and Edward. A sad smile was shared as they left through one of the many pools.
"Now, young ones, you must also return."
"But what do we return to? There is nothing left for us in Earth, Gran is gone now. We have no one to live with." Pietra said, her emotions overcoming her. Edward placed his arm around his sister.
"Worry not children. All will be well. Trust in me and return to your home." Edward and Pietra nodded as they too left through a portal.
Pietra's POV
I sometimes wonder of it was all just a dream, but then I look at the painting above my bed and know that there is no way my imagination is that vivid. Everything did work out in the end. Gran passed away on Earth, her body was back to normal when we came back. The coroner said that it was heart failure, Eddie and I know that that's not true though. We were adopted though, Pop had a brother back in America, Uncle Jack. We didn't see him much before Gran passed and we didn't really know him, but he takes care of us now. He came straight over to England and became our legal guardian. He's not like Gran, but he still cares about us and we get along really well.
The papers claimed that Reese, Reggie and Tom had gone missing, they'd been kidnapped or something. Eddie and I know that that's not true as well. We thought about maybe telling Uncle Jack about what really happened, but decided that he probably wouldn't believe us. But that's ok because Eddie and I are closer that ever and it is this secret that binds us. We may only ever tell our children of Narnia and out Great Aunt and Uncles, but that's enough for us.
