"Okay so, when I came here with my 6th form, back in the day, I stayed in this hotel which was pretty basic and dull but when we all went out to explore the area, we were gutted because just up the road was this huge, amazing hotel with like hundreds of acres of land" Rebecca explained as Smithy drove around the French streets with Kerry and Cameron sat in the back.
Just then, Rebecca spotted something.
"Wait, that's it! The crappy hotel!" the blonde exclaimed, pointing to a small hotel situated on the left hand side of the road.
Smithy turned up the street where Rebecca had pointed and asked where to go next.
"Ummm, if I remember correctly, the big hotel is just around the corner"
As the young Sergeant continued to drive around the corner, he stopped.
"Wow!" Kerry exclaimed from the back seat.
Turning her head and smiling at her sister, Rebecca replied
"I know right, isn't it just amazing!"
From the driver's seat, Smithy asked
"So, are we going in?"
Nodding and getting rather excited, Rebecca announced
"We are so spending the night here! Everyone stick to the plan okay"
With that, Smithy pushed his foot down and drove into the huge stony car park.
Turning off the engine and pulling out the key, the young Sergeant opened his door, stepped out and shut it behind him, followed closely by his three colleagues.
"Are we taking out things in?" Kerry asked, suddenly remembering that her clothes and belongings were still sitting in the black rubbish bag that she had retrieved from their French apartment. Just.
Walking around to the boot, Rebecca pushed it up high and opened an empty suitcase.
"Grab the black bag and put everything in here. At least make it look like you're actually on holidays and not like you've just been made homeless"
Cameron and Smithy laughed as Kerry moved her belongings from the rubbish bag to the spare suitcase. Once she was done, the Sunhill officers pulled out the four suitcases before shutting the boot closed.
"Okay, here goes" Rebecca whispered, taking a big gulp before taking Smithy's hand in hers.
"Come on darling" she muttered, getting herself in to the role of the young male's wife.
All four colleagues walked towards the large front door of the hotel dragging their suitcases over the stony floor. Just as Smithy put his hand on the door handle to open it, Rebecca shouted
"Stop!"
Turning around to look at her sister and ex boyfriend, the young cop explained
"Okay remember, you two are in love and are getting married here in France in a few months.
Shouldn't be too hard for you. Smithy, my darling husband, remember...you're French!"
Nodding, Smithy opened the door and all four undercover officers stepped into the posh looking lobby, Rebecca high heels clicking on the floor as she walked.
"Ah bonjour Monsieur!" Rebecca happily said to the young male concierge sat behind the hotel reception desk.
The young male looked, smiled and replied
"Bonjour Mademoiselle"
Even though Rebecca was practically fluent in French, she had decided, while thinking of a plan to stay in the hotel, that she wanted to speak English so that Smithy, Cameron and Kerry could follow along with the conversation.
"Parlez-vous anglais?" she asked, hoping that the male did speak English.
Much to Rebecca's relief, the concierge nodded.
Giving a slight cough, Rebecca spoke again, this time in English but with such a brilliant French accent that it shocked her three colleagues.
"Ah thank goodness you speak English. I am learning the language and try to speak it at every opportunity. Anyway, nice to meet you, I am...Charlotte Bernard..."
In the corner of her blue eye, Rebecca saw Smithy's mouth open and eyes widen so, turning her head to look at him, the blonde, or rather the red haired, raised her eyebrows.
"And this dashing young man is my beloved husband of three years...Lucas"
Kerry help but let out a giggle which made her sister turn around to face her.
Pointing to the newly black haired, Rebecca announced
"This is my younger sister...Jade and this one is..."
Suddenly Rebecca's mind went blank and she couldn't think of a fake Aussie sounding name for Cameron.
"This is uhh..."
"Robinson...Noah Robinson" Smithy interrupted, speaking with quite an impressive fake French accent.
"It is nice to meet you all" the young hotel worker greeted.
Rebecca took a deep breath and spoke the speech that she had practised a number of times in the previous hour.
"My husband and I have travelled over from Cannes because these two lovely people here are looking to get married, here in France. So we're just in the area looking at possible wedding venues and this hotel is...just grand! It's so beautiful"
Smiling, the young male thanked the red haired and listened as she added
"So, I don't suppose you have two free rooms for the night do you?"
"I will look for you mademoiselle"
As the young boy turned his attention to the computer screen and started tapping away at the keyboard, Kerry, Cameron and Smithy glanced around the hotel lobby. Just then, Rebecca noticed something.
"Lucas..." she whispered, trying to get Smithy's attention without making it too obvious.
When Smithy didn't respond, Rebecca turned her head and realised that he was reading a newspaper on top of the reception desk.
"Lucas!" she called, a bit louder than the previous time and Smithy looked up.
"Oh sorry, yes darling?"
Taking a step closer to her 'husband', Rebecca leaned into him, whispering
"Look at his name badge"
Pulling a confused face, Smithy looked around before he too noticed the disturbing coincidence. The name badge that the young hotel concierge was wearing read 'Ben Hilton'
"Hey what we looking at?" Kerry un-subtly questioned as she and Cameron returned to the desk.
As Rebecca opened her mouth to tell her sister off, Kerry noticed the badge.
"Oh my!" she exclaimed.
Before anything else could be said, Ben Hilton looked up from the computer screen.
"Do you want two adjoining rooms?" he asked and Rebecca instantly replied
"No!"
Realising her mistake, the undercover cop quickly fixed herself.
"No no, my sister is such a big snorer and I need a good sleep haha. Um, two completely separate, un-adjoining rooms please"
Smiling, Ben moved his eyes back to the computer but only a couple of seconds later, looked back up.
"Okay two rooms, one on the 3rd floor and one on the 4th?
"Perfect!" Rebecca replied but her happiness was extremely short lived.
"Great. Before I book and take payment, do you have any identification please?"
'Shit' Rebecca cursed inside her head. All four officers looked at each other, none knowing what to do next.
"Ah, the thing is...Mr Hilton..."
"We were in a fire. Back in Cannes" Smithy interrupted, much to the horror of Rebecca, who shot wide eyes at him.
"We lost nearly everything when our home caught fire, my wife and I only just managed to get out safely. We have had to re-apply for everything; passports, copies of our birth and marriage certificates, everything. The thing is, family is very important to my wife and she just wants to find the perfect place for her beloved sister to get married to the love of her life. So, surely, just this once you could...just forget to ask us for our identification? We won't tell if you won't"
Smithy could imagine the look of horror on Rebecca's face without having to even look at her but the young Sergeant was as shocked as her when the young receptionist replied
"Yes Monsieur, that identification is fine, enjoy your stay"
Smithy breathed out a sigh of relief as Rebecca asked
"Merci monsieur, how much is that please?"
Waving his hand, the kind young French man whispered
"No money, stay here for free tonight. Our secret yeah?"
The four undercover officers couldn't believe it and were extremely grateful to the young hotel worker. As he handed the group two room cards, they thanked him before heading towards the lifts.
Twenty minutes later, all four officers had washed and changed, ready to start their hunt for David and Irene Radford. As Kerry and Cameron had stepped out of the lift on floor 3, Smithy ordered them to be back downstairs in the lobby in thirty minutes before heading up to floor 4 where he and Rebecca were to stay.
"So, have you got any idea how on earth we're going to solve this complete and utter mess?" Rebecca asked, brushing her blonde hair before hiding it back under her long curly haired red wig.
Perching himself on the edge of the bed, Smithy thought for a moment before answering.
"Well, there's no way we can go anywhere near Le Meurice or we'll be caught out straight away. That ferry that we were on was the last one to Dover so we know that the Radford's can't get back to London 'til at least tomorrow so they'll still be in France"
Scoffing, Rebecca explained
"Yeah but France is a very big place Dale!"
Smithy nodded then Rebecca suggested
"What if...I called David?"
"No way Bec, you know tha"
"Just, hear me out!" Rebecca ordered as Smithy jumped in.
"David has my number in his phone so he'll know it's me when I call him. What if I call him 'accidently' and let him over hear a conversation between you and me? Cameron and Kerry could even chip in to make it more realistic. If we could get near the docks so that he could hear the ferry signalling in the background, we could make out that we've been ordered to get back to London but I'm refusing to go because I've made a decision to find David and stay with him? Or something along those lines" Rebecca explained, much to the horror of her young Sergeant.
When Smithy didn't reply, Rebecca probed
"Well?"
"No" Smithy simply replied but the blonde/red haired was having none of it.
"No? I don't think you understand our predicament here Dale. The next ferry back to Dover is tomorrow morning at six am. It is now getting on for three pm, which means we're quickly running out of time. There is no way David and Irene could have left yet which means they're still in France. We're already going to be in a hell of a lot of shit with O'Karo and the Chief Super for not being on that ferry earlier but if we go back to Sunhill without ANYTHING then we can kiss our copper bums goodbye!"
"Bec it's too dangerous! I don't want you to have anything to do with David bloody Radford!"
Rebecca was angry that Smithy wasn't agreeing with her and came to the conclusion that he obviously didn't trust her. Noticing the car keys on the bed next to where Smithy was sat, Rebecca slowly moved closer to them, all the time staring at the young Sergeant.
"Babe don't look at me like that. Look, I just don't want you to get hurt"
"No no it's fine Dale. You obviously don't trust me enough!"
What that, Rebecca grabbed the keys off the bed, rushed to the door, walked out of the hotel room and ran down the corridor towards the lift before Smithy even realised what was going on. Standing up, Smithy rushed to the door and saw Rebecca stepping into the lift.
"Becca wait" he called but it was too late.
The lift doors shut and Rebecca headed for the lobby where she hoped Cameron and Kerry were there waiting.
Pulling the hotel door shut, Smithy headed for the stairs.
"Just like her sister, god damn stubborn and a pain in the bloody arse!" he cursed, stomping his way down the red carpeted stairs in the direction of the lobby.
Seeing her sister walk out of the silver lift, Kerry put on her act.
"Oh hello there my beloved French sister, how are thee?"
Pushing straight past her, Rebecca muttered
"Shut up Kerry!" before walking out of the doors towards Smithy's rental car outside.
Confused, Cameron and Kerry rushed out after her.
"Becca what's going on? Where's Smithy?"
"He's here!" a voice shouted from the hotel door.
"Kerry, get in the car" Rebecca ordered so she did.
"Cameron...you know I hate you right now but, do you trust me?" the red haired asked her Aussie ex.
Cameron nodded before Rebecca added
"Good, so get in the car"
Cameron did as he was told and jumped into the back of the car with Kerry.
As Rebecca turned to get into the driver's seat, Smithy jumped down the steps.
"Bec wait, please"
She didn't know why but Rebecca was so furious that Smithy wouldn't go with her plan. Turning around, the young PC shouted
"No Smithy, I won't wait! I told you my plan and you shut me down in seconds! Those two don't even know my plan, yet they're in the car waiting for me to drive them!" she exclaimed, pointing to Kerry and Cameron in the car.
"Yeah drive them to their death maybe!" Smithy scoffed.
Rebecca couldn't believe the way Smithy was acting and was actually feeling hurt but knew they were running out of time. Looking deep into the Sergeant's dazzling eyes, Rebecca stated a hurtful truth.
"I actually hate you right now Dale"
With that, the red haired female jumped into the driver's seat and started the ignition.
Smithy was frozen to the spot, devastated that the woman he had fallen in love with, had just expressed how much she hates him. However, the sound of the engine revving brought him back to earth with a bang. He thought it was such a terrible idea setting up Radford and letting him find them but, was the love struck sergeant really going to watch his three colleagues drive off to their possible death? Of course not! Rushing to the passenger side door, Smithy opened it just as Rebecca was about to drive off.
"Okay wait, yeah you hate me but I love you. There I said it, from the bottom of my heart. I actually love you Bec. Of course I trust you but I know how evil David Radford is. But, if you insist on doing this, I'm not going to stop you. You die, I die"
Kerry laughed in the back seat and muttered
"How romantic!"
Giving Smithy a hurtful, unimpressed look, Rebecca added
"Tell me about it. Belt up people"
Whispering to Cameron, Kerry asked
"Does she mean put our belts on or shut our mouths?!
Shrugging his shoulders, Cameron clicked his belt on and Kerry copied. With that, Rebecca slammed her foot down and sped out of the hotel car park, in the familiar direction of the French docks.
