CHAPTER 21
"How are you feeling?" I ask Klaus as we drive (well above the speed limit I might add) towards the mansion
He swallows hard "Terrified" He admits quietly "I don't know how to be a father… I'm going to be awful at it, just look at mine"
I nod my head "Maybe so, but in my experience people with awful parents either become just like them and repeat the cycle or they take all that pain and hurt and channel it into being the best parent, never wanting their child to hurt like they did"
He nods his head tightly "That's beautiful in theory love, but it's been a thousand years since Rebekah and Henrik were born which is the only experience in taking care of a child I've ever had… I hear a few things might have changed"
I smile, amused "Only the technology, basics are still the same. No one's perfect but I know you can do this. You just have to be the person who I know you really are, that's the great thing about babies, they don't judge you or have preconceived notions, if you love them they'll love you. Simple as that. just wait as soon as you hold that child in your arms, you'll see what I mean" I smile at him
"I hope you're right, because I don't know if I can do this" He says in a panicked voice
I slide my hand across the seat and slip it into his "Then it's a good thing you aren't doing it alone"

"how is she!?" I ask Deryl frantically the second Klaus and I burst through the door to the mansion
"She's screaming a lot… but Elijah is with her, and Rebekah… and some dark haired girl just came, said she could help and that she owed you guys a favor"
"Sophie Devereaux" Klaus tells me quietly
"Great, so two Original vampires, and a witch but no doctor, I don't care who has to be compelled, Hayley needs a real doctor!" I shout, as I turn to run up the stairs, but I'm stopped by a strong hand on my forearm
"Elijah is a certified doctor and surgeon of eighteen different types and specializations, and I know for a fact that one of them is gynecology so calm down, there is no one better to be with her right now, and I would imagine that bursting in there would only cause more of a panic" Klaus relays calmly
"AHHHHHH" Hayley's bloodcurdling scream cuts through the mansion and I'm gone in a flash, reasoning be damned! I can feel Klaus right behind me as I burst through the door that she's behind "YOU BASTARD!" Hayley shouts at Klaus "YOU DID THIS TO ME! I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU!" she screams all manner of obscenities at the father of her child in the instant it takes for me to stand by Rebekah on the other side of the room.
The room is large and Hayley lies on a hospital bed right in the middle, her legs are up in stirrups and her hair is pulled back by the sweat on her forehead, she writhes and twists into excruciating angles and I can hear bones crack as she convulses "What's wrong?" I ask Rebekah concerned
"Nothing according to Elijah… It's an unusual baby so it shall have an unusual birth, he believes the breaking bones are her… beginning to change…."
"Wait, she's going to be a wolf when she delivers?" I ask shocked
"No, it's just her body's natural reaction to a level of pain this extreme, and she's able to because of the hybrid blood inside of her, the longer labor takes the more wolf she'll get" Rebekah informs me solemnly
"Oh" I say, not sure what else there is too say
"Niklaus come here" Elijah calls him with his hand
"No thank you brother, I'm quite alright here. I'll just stay here and you can deal with… that" Klaus motions uncomfortably from where he hides in the corner like a thirteen year old in Sex-Ed class
"Please brother, this is your child and I need your help!" Elijah calls
"I'll do it!" Rebekah snaps walking over to stand by her brother "Jesus Nik it's not like it's anything you haven't seen before, you do remember how we got into this mess don't you!"
"WOULD YOU ALL JUST SHUT UP!" Hayley yells suddenly "In case you haven't noticed, there is a mother fucking hybrid wolf baby coming out of me and my bones are breaking as we –OW, DAMNIT!- speak so is a little peace and fucking quiet to much to ask for!" We all nod quietly, and for the first time I feel genuinely sorry for Hayley… no one should have to go through that much incredible pain.
"Hayley I'm going to need you to push a little harder" Elijah instructs dryly
"I CAN'T!" she yells loudly
"Yes you can, please Hayley, try!" Elijah pleads
I watch as Hayley takes a deep breath and nods her head slowly, several cracks echo throughout the room along with a high pitched, glass breaking (literally… a few wine glasses broke) scream as she pushes and something starts to fall into Elijah's waiting hands
"Alright, I've got the head… one more push like that should do it" he says excitedly
Hayley lays back panting "I can't do this with an audience!" she yells
"Sorry!" I say immediately and flash out, soon followed by Klaus and then Rebekah.

Twenty minutes later I'm pacing the floor nervously, Rebekah is neurotically playing with the ends of her hair, and Klaus is sitting statue-still on the couch, looking into the blank distance. The screaming stopped a few minutes ago but no one has come to get us… something must have gone wrong… is the baby okay? Is Hayley okay? Is it a demon baby? Is it a wolf? Is it- before I can obsess anymore Elijah opens the door holding a small form swaddled in a pale pink blanket
"Niklaus, you have a daughter" He announces with a smile, delivering the cooing infant into the waiting hybrid's arms.
Klaus' eyes light up like I've never seen before as he stares into the large blue-green eyes that stare up at him, his lips quirk upward on their own accord, unable to stay in place during this moment of extreme happiness. I can't help but smile (and almost cry I'll admit…) at this thousand year old being having one of the most human experiences. The girl is minutes old and he already looks so protective of her.
"Where's Hayley" I ask carefully, drawing eyes away from Klaus who is far to wrapped up in the tiny bundle he holds to give a damn about its mother
"Right after delivering she completed her transformation and jumped out the window… she'll be back by morning I'm sure, her body needed to transition to heal properly"
I nod slowly, for once it seems like everything is working out!
"Oh c'mon, let me hold my niece!" Rebekah whines, interrupting my thoughts
"No, you don't know the first thing about babies, you'll drop her!" Klaus bellows pulling the child closer to him
"I know more than you do! Besides I'm a girl, it's natural for us!" I roll my eyes as she continues to paw at the infant
"Rebekah, just go-"
"WAAAHHH" The child starts to cry inconsolably
"Now look what you've done!" Klaus yells trying to rock the baby into peace (though it looks more like he's trying to drill into cement by the way he's shaking her)
"Me? That was your fault!" Rebekah insists
I move between them quickly, ignoring Klaus' protests as I grab the baby gently, fitting her head into the crook of my elbow as I begin to sway her gently "It's both of your faults" I scold on a whisper "You can't yell like that around her" I walk around the now silent room slowly and I can feel the child lulling back to sleep. I kiss her head softly as her saucer sized eyes close delicately
"Now that's natural" Klaus murmurs in a mocking tone to Rebekah
"Oh yeah, a woman who's been dead for 2 years rocking a miracle hybrid wolf baby who's mother is running around in the woods eating raw squirrels to sleep… so natural" Rebekah rolls her eyes
"You're just jealous because Caroline is better at taking care of the baby than you are" Klaus shoots back with a smug smile, I can't help but laugh quietly at the ridiculousness of this whole situation
"It's been five minuets! I haven't even gotten to hold her! How do you know she's better!" The original huffs
"Okay, okay" I walk over to Rebekah and transfer the child carefully into her arms. Rebekah smiles when the child continues to sleep undisturbed
"See!" she shouts triumphantly, simultaneously waking the child. I laugh good-naturedly and roll my eyes slightly as I bring the child back into my arms. I can hear Klaus whisper something into Rebekah's ear and she responds by giving him a swift kick in the shin.
I feel a body press up behind me as a pair of arms comes up to fit comfortably under mine in supporting the child "I see what you were talking about now, love." Klaus smiles pressing his lips to my temple
"She's perfect" I smile quietly
"Everything is perfect now" The hybrid whispers against my hair
"Oh get a room!" Rebekah snipes from the corner
"I have one actually, in fact I have several to spare" he turns to stare at his sister with a mocking grin, and the two launch into a bicker fest about as mature as kindergarten kids
I look on in amusement "Just look at what you were born into" I whisper to the baby on a laugh
Alright, finally: THE CHILD IS BORN! And the mystery to what she is and all that is coming, but in one of three ways. The way I see it now, there are 2 chapters left until I either:
I write an epilogue (approximately 20 years in the future) to tie up loose ends, you see how everyone ends up and start writing a new story
I continue on with this story as our protagonists and their peripherals make their way to Mystic Falls for Rebekah and everything else that is still unresolved in the big MF
I finish this story, no epilogue and start a sequel where our protagonists make their way to Mystic falls and deal with everything there (including of course Rebekah)
Totally up to you guys, I'll let you vote on the next two chapters as well as opening a poll on my profile! Let me know what you want! I will do whatever majority voters say, so this is the last chapter with a vote meaning you have a week (ish) to get your say in! Let me know what you want!
