Chapter 24
The La Madeleine; that was where he was supposed to go. But how did the Vicomte know the importance of such a place to Erik?
He walked around the building, checking for anyone who might be associated with Raoul. Finding no one, he continued inside, searching for a soul or for a clue. Again, nothing.
He huffed in impatience. He said it would be here. So where is it?
After a few more minutes of searching the church, he sat in one of the seats, exhausted and irritated. He began to ponder what all had occurred since he found that Sabrina was kidnapped. He had done all that Raoul had asked of him except for giving him the money. Is that why there is no clue here?
Just as that though occurred to him, a reflection of light caught his eye. Upon further investigation, he found where the light was coming from: the organ. Against all better judgment, he decided to see what was causing it. Should it be one of the Vicomte's men, he would rather confront them first rather than the other way around. But when he got to the source of the light, he found that he would have preferred it to be one of Raoul's men.
"Christine…"
"Hello, Erik." She said.
"What are you doing here?" he asked venomously. "Shouldn't you be with your Vicomte, torturing Sabrina?"
She looked down in shame. "What Raoul is doing is wrong. I am trying to help her."
He gave a sardonic chuckle. "You're helping her by coming here to me?"
Fire was in her eyes when she looked at him. "Yes, actually. I know where she is, and you will need my help in getting her back. Only Raoul and I know where she is at; all others were blindfolded when they went there. I am the only one that can help you. I know what is happening to her, and let's just say that even I want to kill Raoul right now!"
Erik was shocked. He had never seen Christine this spirited before. But what she had last said made his stomach drop to the floor. "What is he doing to her?"
"He whipped her and she has cuts all over. Erik, I fear for her life. That is why I came to you. We need to get her out of there."
He shook his head in confusion. "If you want her out of there so much, then why haven't you helped her escape?"
Her face showed defeat. "She said she doesn't want to escape; she believes that you will come for her and escaping would kill your chances of finding each other."
"What's the plan?"
Christine handed him an envelope. "Meet me at the location inside this envelope tomorrow night at midnight. We will get her then."
He nodded. "Thank you, Christine."
"You can thank me when we get Sabrina out of there."
Pain in my arm was what I woke up to a few hours later. I looked over to see Raoul injecting me with something. "What's that?"
Raoul turned on me with a sick smile. "Just a little something to keep you occupied."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"I'll let you find out for yourself." He said as he slowly backed out of the room.
I sat for a few minutes, pondering what he could have possibly meant. Then the door burst open, Erik running in. He saw me and ran over to me, taking my face in his hands. "Oh Sabrina, I thought I would never see you again." He said, emotion showing on his face.
"I knew you would, though." I said, tears coming down my face. "You came just in time. Untie me before he comes back."
He looked at the ropes binding me, then back into my eyes. "I'm afraid I can't do that."
"What? Why?"
"Because I don't love you anymore."
Tears still came down my face, only now for another reason. "What do you mean?"
"Can't you see? That's why I took so long in finding you. I was so happy that you were gone that I went out and celebrated. During that little time, I saw Christine, and she told me that she loved me. But don't worry," he said. "I'll make sure that Raoul doesn't hurt you too much."
Then Christine came through the door and walked over to Erik, embracing him. "Oh dear, why did you tell her without me here? I wanted to see her face."
"I'm sorry my love. I didn't think." He said as he leaned down to kiss her.
I closed my eyes, trying to block out what was happening, but to no avail. "Please…"
"Please what?" Erik asked. "Stop?" They laughed together, sounding as if my little plea was the funniest thing in the world to them.
They were still laughing when they walked out of the room I was being held in. I couldn't hold back my sobs as the door slammed shut. How could they do this to me? I thought to myself. How could they betray me like that? How could he betray me like that?
These thoughts were still swirling in my head a few hours later when the smell of food reached my room. The door opened to reveal Christine holding a plate of steaming food.
"I hope you're hungry. I brought enough down here to feed a horse." Noticing my tear-stained face, she asked, "What's wrong, Sabrina? Did Raoul do something to you?"
My entire being shook with fury. "Don't pretend it never happened, Christine. Why are you even down here, anyways? Shouldn't you be with him?"
Confusion crossed her face. "With who?"
"Oh, don't you remember your little visit a few hours ago?" I asked snidely.
"What visit? I was in town a few hours ago. You're confusing me, Sabrina."
"Am I? Well, let me refresh your memory: you and Erik were down here, reveling in the love that you apparently have for each other. Does that sound familiar?"
Her face went pale. "Sabrina, Erik hasn't been here. What did Raoul do to you?"
"He did nothing! It was you and Erik who ripped my heart from my chest and stomped it into the floor!" I yelled.
"What has he done?" she asked to herself, handing me the food.
"I'm not hungry." I snapped at her.
Her face fell as she straightened, putting the plate of food on a nearby table. "I swear to you, Sabrina, we will get you out of here." She said as she walked out the room, closing the door behind her.
