Chapter twenty five
Kuro-tan said he would pick her up soon and that she should stay put while he got there. Well, she wasn't going anywhere and it looked like the foul-mouthed men weren't either. Their faces were white and they peered at their strange device (which closely resembled a gameboy) every so often with wide eyes. She didn't know what had spooked them so badly.
A lone howl pierced the silence, making them curse loudly. More bone-chilling howls followed from every direction and echoed hauntingly in the cavern. Kagome had never seen a wolf in person, but she'd watched enough nature shows to know what their call sounded like. It helped that the bad guys were grumbling sourly about pesky wolves.
Three of them appeared at the entrance, less than a yard away from where Kagome was hidden. They were big and brown with cream colored underbellies. Their ears were laid back and their fangs were bared as they approached, crouched and ready to strike. Two more followed in their wake, likewise snarling and growling at the pair huddled in the back of the cave.
Kagome watched in unblinking amazement as they went right past her, close enough for her to smell their woodsy scent and feel the body heat they exuded. It made her heart pound a ferocious beat in her chest. Before they could reach their targets, a hole tore open behind them and they made a hasty retreat and ran through the black vortex. It seemed to swallow them up and disappear as soon as they stepped through it. The canines whined, disappointed.
