She sighed as she stepped back, and crossed her arms over her chest. Something wasn't right with the menu, she just didn't know what. "Something is missing." She muttered, shaking her head. Lifting her head, she smiled at the ceiling, and shook her head. "What could it be?"
"Caroline,"
She whirled around, and a huge smile broke on her face. Racing out of the kitchen, she rushed towards the front door, and collided with his body, wrapping her arms around his neck. "You're early." She whispered, holding him close.
Klaus chuckled, and held her. "I got an earlier flight home. I couldn't wait to see you." He remarked, kissing the side of her head.
She pulled back, and her eyes gleamed with joy. "You are so full of it." She stated, with a teasing tone.
He smiled, and brushed her blonde hair from her face. "It's the truth, Caroline." He returned, watching her smile.
"I know, but sometimes I think you say it just to make me smile." She remarked, running her fingers through the back of his head.
He smirked, and pulled her closer. "There's not a day that I don't want to see you smile, love." He whispered, sending shivers through her spine.
She leaned forward, and brushed her lips over his. "Well, then," She said, brushing her lips over his once more. "You succeeded." She added, kissing him once again.
He smiled, and captured her lips with his, and held her close. Pulling back, he smiled into her eyes, eyes that a year ago today had been filled with darkness.
Eyes that he never wanted to see that dark again, and he hadn't since, for after he had saved her from herself, she left with him. Telling her friends she needed a change and that saying there was too hard for her. Mostly, they had understood, but they couldn't understand why with him.
Though they were grateful he had been the one to bring her back, they never could understand why he had been the one.
Caroline had given up trying to make them understand, and left them behind, moving to New Orleans to start fresh, and begin again.
She had been grateful that he supported her, and never tried to push. Klaus had been the only one who seemed to understand that she couldn't relieve the pain over and over again, and though there were times she felt like giving up again, like on birthdays or holidays, he had held her close, and reaffirmed his love for her.
He never let her go through the pain alone, and for that she loved him.
She never told him, not with the three words, but with so much more. She told him with actions, with smiles, with touches, with kisses, with everything she was able to, and he accepted it.
Unlike the other men in her life, he was the only one who understood, and she never felt pressured.
"Dinner is almost ready." She stated, pulled back, and smiled as he tilted his head to the side.
"Dinner?" He asked, watching her nod, biting her bottom lip, mischievously.
"Yes, dinner, and dress nice, there's a suit lying on the bed upstairs." She stated, backing away from him, holding his hands until they couldn't anymore.
He chuckled, and shook his head. Even after a year, she still surprised him, and he hoped it would never end.

Caroline placed the match over the second candle, and sighed with a smile as she blew it out. Tonight was a good night, and even though she still couldn't place what she was missing, she felt right about this.
Turning around, she smiled as he came into the doorway, dressed in a button down blue shirt, and grey slacks. She had been right in her judgement when she picked them out.
He looked incredibly sexy.
He stopped, and tilted his head. Taking in her blonde hair cascading down her shoulders, wearing a blue and gold dress with broad sleeves, and came down to just above her knees, she was a vision. "You look ravishing, love." He whispered, his voice nearly choking in his throat.
She smiled, and dipped her head a fraction. "You don't look so bad yourself." She returned, stepping towards him, and slowly wrapped her arms around his neck.
He hummed, and wrapped his arms around her waist, bringing her closer to him. "Will you tell me exactly why I had to dress up in my own house for a dinner with you?" He asked, though she read the joy in his voice.
She hummed, and twirled her fingers through his hair. "Well, tonight is a special night, and I wanted to dress for the occasion." She answered, watching him smile.
"Oh, do tell, love." He pried, watching her shake her head.
"Not yes, Klaus." She stated, closing his mouth with hers. "You'll have to wait until after dinner." She added, joyously.
He chuckled, and kissed her lips, pouting playfully after he did so. "Very well," He conceded, knowing that once she got her mind set on something, he could never get it out of her.
She smiled, and led him towards the table, where the food had been prepared, and waited for him to pull out her chair, before starting the evening, hoping everything went as well as she hoped.

After the dinner, she smiled as she leaned back, and bowed her head.
Now was the moment.
"Now, are you going to tell me what this was about?" He asked, leaning forward, and she lifted her head to search his eyes.
Letting out a long sigh, she stood up from the chair, and moved towards him. Taking his left hand in hers, she knelt down beside him. "A year ago today, you saved me." She answered after a moment, holding his eyes with hers.
"You saved me from myself, and promised me you would never let me go." She added, watching his eyes fill with remembrance. "You came for me when no one else could reach me." She continued, swallowing down the emotion she was feeling.
"I've never said the words, but I want you to know that I love you, Klaus." She added, watching his eyes fill with tears.
Inhaling deeply, she bowed her head, and licked her lips. "I love you." She stated, strongly, nodding her head, her eyes filling with tears of joy. "You've always been there, and never let me fall back into the darkness that is within me." She added, slowly standing, and pulled him up out of his chair.
Placing her hands on his chest, she gazed into his eyes. "Tonight is special because I wanted you know that I do love you, and I'm so grateful that you saved me that day." She stated, firmly. "You are the only one who ever understood, and let me be myself, and for that I pledge my life and love to you today."
Klaus slowly shook his head. "Caroline," He began, but she shook her head, and placed her right hand on his lips.
"Rebekah is going to kill me for this, but," She began with a small laugh. "Screw it." She stated, shrugging her shoulders, let out a laugh. "We have eternity, Klaus, and however long that is, I want to spend it with you." She continued, strongly. "This past year has proven two things to me. I love you, and I know that I want to be there for you, just like you are there for me." She concluded, smiling.
Klaus swallowed, hard, and searched her eyes. Every word she spoke entered his soul with a force that shook him, and filled him like nothing he ever felt before. He had saved her, and here she was pledging to be his for eternity, or was she?
Licking his lips, he searched her eyes. "What are you saying, Caroline?" He asked, watching her smile, brighter with tears in her eyes.
"I'm saying…" She began, backing up to reach for something on the table. Picking up a small box, she turned and slowly opened it. "I know you are supposed to ask, and you can, later, but tonight…" She continued, shaking her head. "This is for me." She added, watching his eyes widen at the set of rings resting on black velvet in her hands. "Rebekah helped." She added, shrugging her shoulders.
Lifting his eyes to hers, he realized this wasn't a dream.
"I mean, we don't have to right now, but I just wanted you to know that I'm ready whenever you want to, and…" She stopped in mid-sentence when his lips crashed into hers, silencing her next words.
She giggled, against his mouth, and wrapped her arms around him, taking in his passion and love. Pulling back, she caught a stray tear falling from his eyes with her lips, and smiled against his skin. "Does that mean?"
He laughed, and kissed her cheek. "It means, yes, Caroline." He answered, kissing her lips once again. "It means an eternity of yes'." He added, lifting her in his arms, as she laughed with tears streaming down her face.
~One Year Later~
Caroline smiled as she placed the sunflowers on the grave, and knelt in front of the tombstone. "I did, mom." She remarked, softly. "I found my happiness." She added, nodding her head, glancing at the set of rings on her left hand.
"I wished you could have been there." She continued after a moment. "It was beautiful."
She inhaled deeply, and lifted her head up to the sky, before turning back to the stone. "Rebekah and I decorated the room with sunflowers, so it was like you were there." She continued, smiling. "You would have loved it, mom."
She sniffed, and wiped the tears from her cheeks. Letting out a laugh, she continued. "He's good to me, makes me laugh, holds me when I cry, smiles when I rant, and is just there when I need him." She shook her head, and bowed it. "I love him, mom. More than I ever thought possible."
The wind began to surround her as she continued to speak. "He makes me happy, and loves me, like you would have wanted." She smiled, and laughed. "I know you're still here, and I want you know, I'll always love you, and I miss you." She added, placing her right hand over her chest, and sighed. "I love you, mom." She added in a low whisper, and stood up.
Placing her hand on the tombstone, she let a stray tear fall from her cheek, and hit the ground, where the sunflowers sat. Nodding her head, she turned to head towards the car, and smiled as he waited against the passenger door.
"What did she say?" Klaus asked, tilting his head to the side with a smile on his face.
Caroline smiled, and turned her head to the grave. "She said, she would always be there for me." She answered, turning back to him, and placed her right hand on his scruffy face. "Just like I will be there for you," She added, smiling.
He smiled, and kissed her palm. "And I you, Caroline," He whispered, leaning forward to kiss her lips.
She smiled, and grasped his right hand for a gentle squeeze before climbing in the car, smiling at her husband as he closed the door.
Turning her gaze back to the grave, she smiled as she saw a figure dressed in white standing over the grave, holding the sunflowers, and tears sprang to her eyes as the figure smiled at her from a distance.
Lifting her right hand, she waved through the glass, and felt the words she heard in her heart echo louder in her ears.
I'll always be there for you, Caroline.
Nodding her head, she turned to face her husband of six months, and smiled. "Take me home, Niklaus."
Klaus smiled at her words, and grasped her left hand with his right. "As you wish, Caroline."
Letting out a laugh, she threaded her fingers through his, and sighed.
She was happy, and loved, just like her mom wanted.
