Empty glasses on tables, echoes fill these rooms
The memories go where we go,
They're like the suitcase that you never lose
If the good lords eyes upon me
I swear to make things right
Whatever we lost, I know we can find
Why do we say things we can't take back
Why do we miss what we never had
Both of us fell to the ground
The love was so lost, it couldn't be found
What would it take to forget who's blamed?
I'm tired of crying out at the sound of your name
Why don't we turn this around, love ain't the enemy
Don't you want to be lost then found
Song- Lost Then Found
By- Leona Lewis, Ft: One Republic
Sam winced as he pulled the dry shirt over his head and down his jaw. He could still feel the sting and throbbing from the hit that landed him square in the center of his cheek. He even had to admit he was in a bit of shock that the frail sister he had once watch struggle to walk let alone get food into her mouth was able to land a solid hit without so much of a wobble.
'Trival thought,' ran though his mind at the sound of the rain thumping against the window's glass. He needed to get out there and find her as she was in a new place, under dressed, and recovering from whatever had caused those wounds. Grabbing a hold of his raincoat, he turned and dashed out of his room, down the steps, and charging for the front door as he swung his arms into the yellow slicker.
"And where do you think you are going?"
It wasn't the question but the voice that had him stopping dead in his tracks. "I have to go, Leah; she needs me."
"Needs you?!" came out in a barked laugh that filled the room.
Anger boiled in Sam, causing him to turn and look at his girlfriend, stunned at how callous she could be. "Yes, needs me. She is lost and alone in a new place in a downpour. Something she is far from use to; compared to where she lived-".
"Cut the crap, Sam!"
"I so don't have time for you right now, Leah. If anything, I thought you would be happy for me; happy I have my sister back. But obviously you can't stand that someone comes before you," he spat through clenched teeth at the girl he thought would always stand by him. As he turned and made his way to the door, he stopped dead when a hand grasped tightly around his forearm.
"I get that this is an emotional thing for you and all, Sam. So I am willing to forget that last part of crap you just spewed at me. BUT your baby sister is far from needing you. In fact I think that is the exact opposite of what she needs," she bit out.
Her words caused him to whirl around in disbelief and anger. "You said it yourself, she is my BABY sister and as her older brother, she needs my protection. She needs me to finally find her."
"Sam, listen and look at yourself. She knocked you out quicker than Muhammad Ali knocked out Robison, leaving your face swollen and bruised and your eye half shut. So I do believe she can take care of herself. So don't make this about her needing someone to protect her. This is all about you protecting you, Sam. You said it yourself -she needs me to finally find her. You believe if you go off tramping through the woods and find her now, it will redeem yourself not only in her eyes but in yours as well; because you will have finally fulfilled your deepest promise and desire, and that is to find Bella." She could see him wavering as the words finally seeped in and his head hung. "Come on. Let's get something on that eye," her tone now softer as she tugged on his arm and led him over to the sofa. With a huff she pushed on his limp form, causing him to fall into the cushions. A deep sigh echoed through the room. "Keep your ass there, I'm going to get some ice from the freezer."
Sam didn't have it in him to say anything; he only nodded in response. His mind was running on anything but true logic. Leah's words broke through like they usually did but it didn't make him feel any less torn on staying or going and just sitting here made it so much worse.
"Sam."
His name pulled him for his swirling thoughts and for him to look up to see Sue standing at the entryway between the stairs and the living room. She had a worried smile gracing her lips and he could tell she pitied him; but then again who didn't these days.
"Is there anything I can do for you?"
Sue always had a need to stay busy in times of distress. Everyone always said being an ER nurse made her that way, believing in busy hands and mind left no time for worry. A small smile crossed Sam's lips, "Yeah. Um, could you, um, prep the master bedroom for Bella?"
Sue raised an eyebrow at Sam giving away his grandmother's old room, and the house's master bedroom was something she didn't expect.
"I never made the move over to it. Never felt right, even after getting a new bed frame and mattress set. Maybe it was something deep in me telling me Bella was coming," he took a deep breath as he took in the woman's confused expression. Sure it made sense for him as the master of the house and the oldest to take the largest room, but it didn't feel right. Bella deserved a palace to rest her head, but he couldn't give her that. He could, however, give her the room she deserved. A slight smirk crossed his lips. "I mean if I go off Leah, girls have ten times more clothes, shoes and overall junk then us guys. So she'll need the room."
"I resent that," barked out as a cold hard pack hit his shoulder, causing him to look up and see Leah entering back into the room. Sam lifted his brow at her with a small chuckle, "Fine, I resemble that," she huffed as she grabbed the pack from the couch and shoved it onto his face, as she took a seat on the coffee table in front of him.
Ignoring her, Sam looked up again at the conflicted woman, "Please, Sue."
"Of course," a small forced smile played at her lips as she turned and made her way up the steps.
A loud huff caused him to turn his attention back to who sat in front of him. "What?"
"Nothing!"
"Not playing this game, Lee," he groaned; knowing the whole nothing game would give him more of a headache then the blow from his sister's fist.
"Sam, what makes you think she is going to willingly live with you?"
"Because I am her brother and her family," his response coming out as if it was the dumbest question he had ever been asked.
"That might be true, but she might feel more comfortable at-"
"NO, LEAH! She is my sister, my only blood. She will stay with me, whether anyone likes it or not. If need be, I will use old tribal law; and seeing as I am the oldest male member of our family, I have all rights to dictate anything that regards the best interest of any members of my family. So she stays here. Where I can protect her," he snapped out as he threw the bag of ice. "Sitting here is useless. I need to find her." was bit out as he took to his feet.
Grabbing ahold of his arm, she stood up to face him and blocked his path. Raising her hand, she placed it on the uninjured part of his face. "Sam, you need to face facts. If she wanted you to find her or protect her, she wouldn't have hauled off and hit you and ran like she did. You need to realize things are different now and she isn't the same sister you remember. She has a past you don't know about and you need to face facts, Sam. You aren't her hero anymore; you're the enemy."
"The enemy!?"
"Yes! The enemy, Sam. Like it or not, in her mind you along with everyone here has been a betrayer to her. Even my dad, who had no clue of what Billy cooked up, is like enemy number one in her mind due to the fact he was there when you all left her behind; and in association to being his daughter, I will join that list when she realizes who I am," she sighed. "Sam, you have no idea what she has seen or been through but by the looks of her when she got here, I would bet it hasn't been a good four and half years. You need to realize in that time she became her own protector and her own hero," her voice firm but soft. She could see the pain in his eyes as it hit him that he really might no longer stand on his sister's pedestal. She softly caressed the bruising with a playful smile, "I mean you don't become a prize hitting south paw without having to learn to protect yourself."
A small chuckle escaped him, "Good hit, huh?"
"One that would have left Ali thinking about stepping into the ring."
The sound of a clearing throat echoed, causing Sam to look up and dart away from Leah as if she burned him as he charged forward.
"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING IN MY HOUSE!" bellowed off the walls.
Leah quickly righted herself and turned to see what was going on as Sam was always so cool and collective. As she saw who was now in the hallway, she fully understood his anger as Billy Black sat in his chair with Quil Jr. behind him. She could see the conflict in Quil's eyes, but he had promised to help with Billy's care while Jacob was gone. Unfortunately due to recent events, he was about to get more then he signed up for. Movement on the stairs had Leah's eyes flashing to it, to see her mother darting down the steps. She could see her mother's confliction too as everyone knew of Sam's hatred for the fallen chief, all but Billy as he didn't remember any of his wrong doings. Sam made it crystal clear from the moment Billy awoke with no memories that he hated the idea of playing this game, but after a while he relented for Jacob's sake. While he relented, the line drawn between the group of friends - Sam couldn't play nice with the man that he deemed ruined his and Bella's life. Billy never fully understood Sam's dislike, and how could he as he was fed a bunch of buffers to cover up the truth. A truth that seemed to be ready to come out by the look on Sam's face.
"I ASKED YOU A DAMN QUESTION, OLD MAN!"
"SAMUEL!"
His name had him stopping dead, but his eyes didn't waiver from the man before him.
"Samuel, is that how we talk to an elder?"
"Elder? That laughable. He's-"
"Enough, Samuel. You're upset and we get that, but-"
"Upset? That is a fucking understatement, Susan. And but nothing, none of this-"
"I SAID ENOUGH!" her voice echoing, causing everyone to go stock still. Sue was the most gentle, even tempered person and to hear her yell was shocking to everyone but proved she meant business. Sue finished her way down the steps and placed her hand on Quil's shoulder, "Go get something to eat in the kitchen. I have this," she said softly.
Quil didn't need to be told twice as he had no desire to stay in the cross hairs of Sam. He promised Jacob to care for his father, but he wasn't so sure how much he could do against Sam to stop him from attacking the man; and he wasn't even sure if he would stop him because deep down the man deserved it for all the pain he inflicted.
Sam flinched at Leah's touch. He knew she was there to comfort him and maybe even distract him; but he didn't look away from his target.
Sue knew letting this fester any longer would make it worse. Grabbing the bull by the horns, she composed herself to find her voice, "What brings you by, Billy? Are you feeling okay, was there something you needed me to check?"
Billy eyed the young man. Sam looked so much like his father in and out of his anger. He didn't fully understand why the boy couldn't let go of the hate. From his understanding, Sam blamed him for not contesting Joshua's stance on custody. Billy knew if he was in his right mind he would have; but as he was told he was to consumed with his depression over his diabetes and the deterioration it was causing to his body, that he allowed it and the drinking to get in the way of doing his job, costing him his marriage, his son, his legs, and his tribe. "No, Sue, I am fine," he sighed as his eyes shifted back to the boy in front of him. "Sam, I know I haven't ever said it, but I-"
"Don't you even mutter those damn words because you don't know the meaning."
"Samuel, I understand your anger and hate but don't be like your father-"
"I AM NOTHING LIKE MY FATHER! You don't know me; so who the hell are you to compare us?"
"I don't know you because you won't let me know you. And I knew your father well; and you carry the same look in your eyes your father did when he slipped away from the anger that ate him alive after your-"
"SHUT THE HELL UP!"
"SAMUEL, STOP!" Sue snapped out before taking a deep breath. "Billy, you should have known better to come here unannounced. You know that this is a difficult time for Sam. The blood between you both has always been bad; so you have to see how this is really hard on him at the moment."
"I understand that, Sue. I just wished to extend my help."
"Your help? I've had enough of your help to last me a lifetime," snarled from Sam's tense form.
This was going nowhere fast. While Sue never agreed with Billy's decisions, she knew his health was poor and that while Jacob shared her views, Billy was all Jacob had left. So upsetting the man with the truth could send him into shock and a downward spiral, but most importantly him remembering could cause more trouble for Sam and Bella. Before he lost his memory he was damned determined to keep Bella away from La Push. Sue didn't know why, but she knew it wasn't right. The girl needed to be here and Sam needed her. It was time to heal for everyone and she would make Sam see that when there weren't prying ears.
"Billy, please could you tell us how you could be of any help?"
"Well, I thought I could offer to make some calls and have Charlie come down and help search for Bella, and place some calls to children's services in California - seeing if they needed anything else to get Bella's file brought up here to start the tribe's claim."
"The-"
Sue's hand flew up to silence Sam. "That is very kind of you Billy. However, if you remember, Charlie only upset Bella more. It seems she has no trust in the police, so it would be best to keep him out of it for the time being. She has only been gone for a few hours but if it goes on to long, we will be sure to report it and seek assistance. As for children's services, that will be up to Harry, as acting chief, to handle. I actually called them earlier to give somewhat of an update and let them know Harry will be back tomorrow or the next day at the latest to continue the paperwork process."
"You were always one to be on the ball, Sue. Well, I guess Quil can take me home then." While Sam didn't hear it, Sue and Leah could hear the sad tone in Billy's voice at feeling useless and hurt at Sam's rage and rejection.
"How about I take you home and let the kids stay together for a bit. This way I can also give you a check-up as your color could be better, guessing you're finding your way into the cookies again," she smiled, trying to lighten the mood.
"As always, you have my number," his voice trying to hide the rejection undertone as he started to wheel himself to the front door before pausing, "For what it's worth, Sam, I'm-"
"Save it and get the hell out!" he spat before turning and walking back into the living room.
Leah stayed put and flashed a sympathetic smile that was meant for her mother before turning to follow Sam and make sure he wasn't about to do something stupid. As he came into her line of sight she stopped in shock causing an unknown Quil to run right into her. Before he could make a smartass retort, she quickly moved to cover his mouth, causing a mumbled what the fuck against her hand. Ignoring his complaint and lick of the inside of her hand with his tongue, she hoped to keep the current calm that would be lost if she pounded Quil like she normally would have for such a gross and offending act with his tongue. Jerking her head forward for him to look, she hoped he'd actually catch a clue and stop his antics.
There sitting on the floor and hunched over the coffee table, Sam sat amongst shredded pieces of paper. "Sam, honey. What are you doing?"
"What does it look like?"
"Seriously, dude, that is nothing but confetti now," Quil chuckled only to receive an elbow to his stomach from Leah and a glare of shut the hell up to go with it, before making her way to Sam's side.
Lowering herself next to him, she placed her unlicked hand onto his, stopping his hurried attempt at matching it together. "Sam, not even the king's men could put humpty dumpty back together again."
Not taking his eyes off the shredded paper and his voice nothing more than a whisper, she could hear the broken tone so clearly. "I know, Lee. But I have to try. Please help me try. I know she is upset but she will want this."
Leah knew this wasn't about Bella wanting the booklet. It was about Sam wanting it back together because if he could piece it back together again, while it would always remain cracked and torn, he'd still have a piece of the past where he was still her hero; and something physical to hold and remember her by if Bella did what Sam feared the most. Runaway from here and disappeared again. A movement caused her to see Quil sitting on the other side of them rummaging through the torn bits and with a small smile he nodded showing his support.
"Yeah, Sam. We'll try," Leah whispered as she lifted her hand from his to help put humpty dumpty back together again.
There we have it.
I hope you all enjoyed this chapter and getting to see some insight on Sam and where his mind is at. We also got some interaction with a very wise Leah. And of course at bit of drama with Billy and Sam.
Next chapter we'll get insight into Bella's reaction and whereabouts.
please review as they are very much appreciated; however, as always, flames are not.
