What happened last:
The Ice King had a flashback of a time when him and Hunson Abadeer worked together because of the events of the Great Mushroom War. Maja was fed up with Hunson's unintentional neglect and finally decided to leave… on her anniversary.
(In response to the Anon's questions that bring up some valid points)
First off, if you read issue 16 of the Adventure Time comic books (no, I do not own them) on about page 9 you'll see that Hunson and Simon were working together at some point so it's not a crazy idea. As for why he's in my FanFiction... I'll be explaining that in more detail later. And about Marcy's age, there's a reason for that of which would be a spoiler so I'll say no more.
I like these questions though. It's nice to know that you guys are actually reading the story and not just looking at the words. :p
..
The Ice King got up and walked back into the room where he kept all of his long lost and forgotten memories. Everything was catalogued and written down so that he would never lose them, regardless of never remembering them.
He went to the main desk in the room, the one he always sat at when he tried to remember things. The chair was old and worn from all the years of use. He pulled out a picture of two people. They were both acting silly and posing for the camera. The setting was in the Nightosphere.
IK: "Yes… I… remember this man. Hudson I think it is?" He was staring at the photo intently, trying his best to remember although not quite remembering the name quite right.
Marceline and Princess Bubblegum were following him the whole time.
M: "Hunson? Hunson Abadeer?"
IK: "Yes! I knew this man… well at least I think. It's all very fuzzy but I think remember him."
M: "You know my father? Uh… knew him?"
IK: "Father? I don't remember him having any kids. He only had a wife at the time." Simon's memories were all in pieces and he couldn't seem to remember all of the details.
IK: "We used to be business partners I think... I used to help out in the Nightosphere." He was being confused by his own thoughts. None of this made any sense.
The Ice King couldn't remember that he wasn't just a business partner with Hunson. After a few years of knowing him the two became friends. They could always depend on each other. When the Ice King was known as Simon, he saved the demon lord's marriage a few times. He always helped Maja remember that her husband was working as much as he did for her. Simon always tried to tell her that Hunson really did love her but she stopped believing him after years of loneliness.
M: "No… That's impossi-"
PB: "No. Let him speak." Bubblegum said as she grabbed Marceline's arm to get her to stop talking.
Bubblegum obviously had something going on in her head so Marceline did as she asked.
PB: "What else do you remember, Simon? Do remember someone named Marcy?" She made sure to address him by his real name.
IK:" Marcy? No… all I remember is that something was wrong. Hunson and Maja had a fight or something and Maja left…"
A veil of sadness was quickly overtaking Marceline. Hearing anything about her family's past was always something that really got under her skin.
IK: "There was something important about the day that she left… I… can't remember." The Ice King was acting as if he was getting a migraine.
PB: "Think, Simon. I know you can remember." Bubblegum was trying to sound very supportive.
IK: "I think she left on… their anniversary…" The Ice King said as he placed his hands on his head to comfort the pain of his headache.
PB: "Ok that's good enough for now Simon. You should go rest."
Simon immediately turned around and went to his room. He was in much pain from PB's experiments but he honestly wanted to help. He was as torn as anyone else over his memory loss.
He got to his room and spoke one last time to himself before passing out on his bed. He took an old picture out of the nightstand beside his bed. He looked at it for a second and tears began to form in his eyes. He didn't know who it was in the picture and that was the worst part.
IK: "Maybe one day I'll remember you, little girl."
..
..
The princess turned to Marceline to ask her about her thoughts on what she just heard.
PB: "So…?"
M: "What just happened? How did you do that?" She was amazed with what just happened.
PB: "Well…" PB took a deep breath, preparing to say something crazy scientific.
PB: "According to pharmacokinetics, phosphorylation of the alpha subunit of initiation factor 2 or "eIF2" is a memory boosting chemical that basically improves the ways that the cells in the body function; thus, helping The Ice King remember who Simon is."
PB: "And I just put that chemical in a concentrated state in this cool little grenade thing. Look, it's pink!" She was incredibly proud of her invention. She pulled another one out of her pocket to show Marceline.
M: "Uhhh… In English please?" Marceline didn't have a clue what Bonnie just explained.
PB: "It's a chemical that helps you remember stuff better. Kind of like fish except that it's much more potent."
M: "Oh sounds pretty cool."
PB: "Yeah, it's just a modern marvel, no big." She was sounding smug but Marcy didn't mind because she was used to it.
M: "So what do we do now? Why don't we just hit him with one of those grenade things again?"
PB: "Well, the chemical may improve how his cells react to biological stimuli but it's puts a lot of stress on him when he's actually putting it to use. And in this case, he's trying to remember things that he probably shouldn't be able to remember anyway. It's fascinating."
M: "So… what? We just sit here and wait?"
PB: "Uhhh…"
Suddenly Bubblegum's phone began to ring.
P. Butler: "PB to Peppermint Butler. Come in PB" It was peppermint Butler calling Princess Bubblegum's amulet video phone.
PB: "Waddup PB?" The princess realized that they had the same initials; something that she wonders why she hasn't noticed yet.
There was an awkward pause for a few seconds...
P. Butler: "I was just sending you the daily activity report that you like to see whenever you're not here. I know how you get when you don't know what's going on."
Peppermint Butler always sends her a virtual copy of all of the day's activities over her amulet phone. The princess can get a bit crazy when she isn't in the loop…
PB: "Ok, thanks. I'll talk to you later then."
P. Butler: "Wait! There's one more thing." He was starting to whisper as if he was about to tell the princess a secret. He held the amulet closer to his face so that he could talk more quietly.
PB: "Wait is that… blood on your face, Peppermint Butler?" She was curious as always but it didn't surprise her much.
P. Butler: "No. Well, yes… maybe. I'm busy with something, don't you judge me." Although Peppermint Butler was the princess's butler he still got a bit lippy with her sometimes.
PB: "At least let me know what you're doing. Remember what I told you?"
P. Butler: "If you catch me playing with black magic then I have to tell you what I'm doing or I'm cut off. Yes I know." He was mostly quoting something PB apparently says often.
Peppermint Butler turned the amulet around to show what he was working on.
…or who….
The princess could see a cloaked and hooded figure. It looked old and decrepit. The screen on her video phone amulet started to receive static. Then the creature spoke.
?: The stars shall align, their cold and ancient light touching upon the ashes of His portrait and awakening the maddening horror…"
PB: "What the-"
M: "What the stuff?" Marceline heard that familiar sounding phrase and it sent shivers down her spine.
She walked over to PB and snatched the amulet out of Bonnibel's hand. The princess didn't mind, she was feeling a bit uneasy from what she just heard.
M: "Who the heck is that Peppermint Butler?!"
P. Butler: "Shut up, you!" He screamed at the cloaked figure.
P. Butler: "It's nothing to worry about. But I have something to tell the princess. It's of GRAVE importance." He said ominously but he was just over exaggerating to get PB's attention.
PB: "Yes? What is it?" She said as she took the amulet back.
Marceline was feeling terrified at this point. She would figure out the deal with this creepy hooded guy eventually. That's next on her to-do list.
P. Butler: "There was something that someone at the hospital was trying to hide. I hate to be a snitch, but rules are rules, ya know?"
PB: "What is it?" She was feeling angry that one of her "loyal" citizens would try to hide something from her, betrayed even.
Peppermint Butler brought the amulet in closer so he could whisper and told PB what he needed to tell her.
PB: "Oh my glob." She put her hand over her mouth in shock.
M: "Did he tell you who that is, PB? Me and Finn saw him in-"
P. Butler: "The Forest of Trees, I know."
M: "Well, if you know so much then tell me who it is!" She was starting to get angry from the lack of answers.
PB: "Calm down, girl. We'll find out soon enough. Peppermint Butler deals with… dark and creepy things all the time so I'm sure that it's… mostly harmless." She was sounding uncertain about how to speak the truth to Marcy, knowing that her most senior servant was also someone who literally plays with death.
M: "That doesn't sound too reassuring Bonnie!" She was starting to sound more and more angry with each unsatisfying answer.
PB: "But, Marcy…"
M: "But, what?! What could possibly be soo important that you can't simply tell me who that creepy dude is?"
Princess Bubblegum looked into Marceline's eyes with a sense of dejection and she turned off her amulet phone.
PB: "It's Finn… he's in the hospital…"
M: "W-what? Is he ok?! What happened?!" Marceline was caught off guard by this horrifying truth and her anger was immediately diffused.
PB: "Yes he's-Marcy!" She yelled as Marceline began to fly away. The princess was quick enough to grab on to Marceline's ankle as she began to fly away.
Once again, Marceline was acting on impulse. She didn't realize it but she was doing that a lot lately. Her emotions were all bottled up inside as they have been for hundreds of years. She was also mostly broken on the inside for most of that time. After Finn the Human came along, she was able to start picking up the pieces with the hero boy's help of course.
Marceline was still soaring through the air with the princess barely clinging on. She was headed for the Candy Kingdom and was going to get there as fast as she could.
PB: "Marceline! I'm slipping!" The princess was quickly losing her grip.
Marceline slowed down to a halt and lowered the princess to the ground without saying anything. Her emotions were all jumbled up and she hardly realized herself acting without a logical thought process.
M: "I'm sorry PB. I guess I got pretty emotional there… I'm just worried about Finn." She felt bad about endangering the princess. She began to blush slightly.
PB: "Yeah, I can see that. You must really like him, don't you?" She said as she crossed her arms with a smirk on her face.
M: "…yeah. I guess you could say that. It's just… I don't know PB. He really seems to "get" me. I don't feel like I need to explain my life to him for him to accept me and understand why I am how I am." She told the princess a truth that she just now realized for herself to the full extent.
PB: "I understand Marcy. I don't blame you for getting a little crazy. Just try not to fly off again. It's kind of a long walk back to the Candy Kingdom…" She said playfully, trying to keep the vampire queen from overreacting again.
M: "Yeah alright, PB."
PB: "Good. Now let's-"
Marceline grabbed the princess more securely this time by hugging her around her upper body and flew off before Bubblegum could finish her sentence.
It didn't take long to get back. Marceline was as determined as ever to get back as fast as possible and that's what she did.
Marceline didn't bother to go through the gates when flying, regardless if the guards would notice and think that she was some sort of threat. She's entered the Candy Kingdom the wrong way nearly every time she's ever gone there. She didn't care.
As soon as Marceline landed she heard someone screaming at her. Whoever it was they sounded angry and hostile.
