So I thought about doing Pesky Karma (originally Pest/Karma due to my poor 3am typing skils) as just a transmformation one-shot but now I realize two things. 1. This might sound better if I rename it Magic Mistakes or something like that. And 2. Magic is so unstable and in the hands of the Spirit of Winter chaos can only ensue. And that sounds like fun (I guess that's three points but I digress). So I decided to expand this into a small dabble. Not a long arc like memories, but I'm about to wrap the family vacation so I thought I'd have another story line to fall on when I get writers block.
Also a couple people have asked me about the memories arc, chapters 11, 15, and 20 (Or ones marked memories if you aren't reading this on a phone or don't like counting) are prologue chapters introducing why the Guardians are in Jack's memories, but because they are actually experiencing all their memories I'm diviving the rest of it into sections, one for each Gaurdian/person who affected Jack's life. There's going to be Memories of Easter, Teeth, Christmas, Dreams, Darkness and then finally Memories of Snowfall for memories that lack the main characters.
"So Jack, you have been practicing your magic, no?"
The others looked up from what they were doing when North asked the question. With the meeting over there was nothing really being done. The Guardians were just hanging out together, occasionally shifting between work, chatting and sipping eggnog. At the time Jack didn't much care to do any of the activities and thus had perched himself in the meeting room window with a book in his hand. The others could not read the scribble-like letter, not even Tooth who was fluent in all language, but North had recognized them. Having spent much time with the wizard Ombric he had learn to recognize mystic texts even if he still only had a basic understanding of them. Feeling awkward Jack closed the book and hid it inside his hoodie pocket.
"Ah, yeah…"
He and North had already had a conversation about Jack's abilities with magic, or his lack of. In truth Jack had a lot of power, but more than often it was left unused, which sometimes resulted strange occurrences; namely shape shifting. Jack referred to them as karma attacks because more often than not the unfortunate events happened after a series of pranks or when he was extremely stressed. North had been waiting for an opportunity to tell the others so they could help him with his skills. This seemed like a perfect time to him. Jack, however, was less than enthusiastic.
"What kinds of magic do you do Jack?" Tooth said intrigued. "Oh! Can you pull Bunny out of a hat?!"
"Oy!" Bunny snapped offended.
"Is there a hat big enough?" Jack snickered.
"Ha ha, why don't you do somethin' fancy for us then magic boy?" Bunny scoffed.
Sandy nodded in excitement. Turning over his hand he created a dream sand bouquet.
"Sandy, really, it's not that kind of magic." Jack said slightly offended. "Besides I'm not that good…"
"Jack you are plenty good, we have been practicing. You are better at the shape shifting now!" North said trying to raise his confidence.
"North!" Jack glared daggers at the old Russian.
"What? I did not tell them about you being stuck as fox." Realizing what he just said North covered his mouth.
"North!" Jack hissed through his teeth.
Bunny covered his mouth trying to suppress his laughter. North, Bunny, and Phil had promised never to speak about that to the others. It was embarrassing enough that they had found out he had issues with his magic, but now Tooth and Sandy knew.
"You got stuck as a fox?" Tooth asked with a smile. "That sounds adorable!"
"Oh he was just the cutest." Bunny teased. "You want ta see a picture?"
"Yes!"
"Bunny stop that." North said trying to redeem himself. "Is not funny."
"I beg to differ."
"Bunny shut up." Jack growled.
"Why? Ya made a cutesy lil kit." Bunny continued.
Bunny's ears were still a bit pink from the dye Jack had used in his last prank. Obviously he still had a bit of resentment.
"Can't even turn yer self in ta somethin' full grown."
"You want to fight Cottontail?" Jack said standing up.
"Jack calm down." North said putting his hands on the boy's shoulder.
"I got an idea!" Tooth said trying to defuse the tension. "Jack, why don't you use a spell to turn make fix Bunny's fur!"
Sandy nodded in agreement. If nothing else it would put and end to the fighting.
"Are ya crazy?! He'll turn all my fur pink!"
"Bunny, we are part of team, that means we need to trust one another." North said firmly. "Besides Jack needs to practice."
"Yeah and we haven't tried transmutation on living subjects yet." Jack said with an evil smirk.
"Oh that makes me feel so much safer." Bunny said rolling his eyes. "I'm not doin' it."
"Oh yes you are." Tooth said coldly. "You owe it to Jack for making fun of him."
"I don't-"
"Da you do." North said more sternly. "Sandy."
Sandy zipped over by the only door. He materialized a whip in one hand and a dream sand ball in the other. He was not getting out of that room without a fight. Bunny growled.
"Fine…But North has to check first." Bunny said reluctantly. "I don't want an extra ear because ya read the wrong page."
"Aw, Bunnymund, I am offended you would think of me as so reckless." Jack said pulling out his spell book and his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Truly you have wounded me this day."
"Jack…show me page." North commanded.
"Fine."
Jack thumbed through the pages and then gave the palm sized book to North. North did his best to translate the symbol, but most of his books Ombric had left him were in a blocky, ruin language. This tome was written in a dialect which looked more a mix of hieroglyphs and squiggles. He knew a little, but not much. North did his best to look like he understood for Bunny's sake. He smiled able to catch the last sentence.
"Command the light to change the color, da, sounds good." He said returning the book to Jack. "You have green light."
"Now hold still." Tooth quipped before moving away from Bunny.
"Let's just get it over with." Bunny groaned.
"Let's." Jack smirked.
Jack quickly read over the page before returning the text to his pocket. Jack raised his staff in one hand and pointed to Bunny with the other. Bunny's ears fell to his head. He did not like where this was going.
"By blessings of amethyst, onyx, lilac and sage"
Bunny was lifted off his feet by a miniature tornado of blue and white that began to spin him around. Jack swirled his staff causing it to go faster. Bunny looked as if he was going to hurl. North glance down at Jack, who had held him like this for a few moments longer than necessary.
"Jack…Enough fun. Finish spell.
Jack huffed and rolled his eyes.
"By shouts of light and whispers of shade. I bend this light now and command the colors… change!"
The tornado suddenly disappeared and Bunnymund dropped to the floor. Tooth was giggling, that was a bad sign. Bunny immediately grabbed the silver tray from the table and dumped the cookies off so he could look at himself. Everything appeared to be in the right place, no extra ears either (always a plus), and all of his fur was now the same gray color; not too dark, not too light and all his markings in the right place.
"Bunny it's nothing. You just had this look on your face when you hit the floor." Tooth assured.
"Well don't laugh like that. With Jack at the helm I thought I had an extra tail!" Bunny said huffing with relief.
Wait. Bunny did a quick check. Yep, only one fluffy tail. He was in the clear.
"Bunny…What do we say?" North said folding his arms.
Bunny rolled his eyes and looked up at the ceiling.
"Fine…Frostbite yer not so bad at magic."
"And…" Tooth urged.
"And I'm sorry. Happy?"
Bunny looked out of the corner of his eye to see Sandy still laughing. He glared at him. No one looked good after being tossed out of a tornado, but still it wasn't that funny.
"Oh I'm very happy." Jack said with a laugh. "Hey I was going to go visit Jamie. You want to tag along? I know Sophie is dying to see you."
"Why not?" Bunny said with a shrug. "You go on ahead though. I'm gonna ta get some aspirin from down stairs. My head is still spinnin' from that spell of yers."
"You go then. I'll wait right here and we can go together. I want to see the look on Sophie's face when she sees you."
"Well ain't that sweet of ya." Bunny said sarcastically. "I'll be back in a flash ya show pony."
Bunny hopped off to get the aspirin from the infirmary. Sandy covered his mouth trying not to laugh too hard as Bunny past him. Still, seeing 'Sophie's Fluffy Bunny' written across his back in green cursive with a boarder of pink flowers was enough to make him double over. Once Bunnymund was gone the others all burst out into laughter.
"Jack, that was not funny…" North said trying to contain himself.
"Then stop laughing." Jack challenged.
"One minute, I'm going to get the camera." Tooth said wiping away a tear. "We have to preserve this."
"Hurry and I'll take it with me over to Jamie's. Sophie is going to have the biggest smile."
North patted Jack on the back as he composed himself.
"Make sure to fix him Jack."
"Cross my heart North." Jack said with a smile. "But first I'm getting my worth out of this before karma comes back to bite me."
Oh yes, Jack was going to enjoy this as long as possible. Knowing his luck, karma would not be kind later on.
