Chapter 24

3rd POV

"Oh! Miss Ramika, I didn't expect to see you!" Matsuda exclaimed in surprise, jumping up from his seat as the blonde scarred woman walked in. He offered her a small unsure smile, but a smile nonetheless. She had been absent from their meetings for the past couple days, and when any of them questioned L to where she was, or what had happened, the brilliant detective always made vague comments or changed the subject. Sometimes he'd even state that discussing her absence is not as important as talking about the case, and new information that had come to light. It seemed much of the task force was still learning to just accept L the way he was; with his weird quirks and mysterious behavior.

Eve simply gave the young man a long, stoic stare, causing Matsuda to shift awkwardly on the balls of his feet; in that moment he realized just how similar the famous L was to this silent vigilante, for they both made him nervous with being so much more superior and intense than he was. Finally Matsuda looked down, her intense, blue gaze causing him to suddenly grow sheepish, as if he had forgotten in those two days just how the blonde woman could act. And instead or replying, Evelyn turned to L, who sat on the couch with the rest of the task force, the latter staring at her with curious and calculating eyes.

"What did I miss?" She asked emotionlessly, sitting a chair as she rested her cheek against her palm lazily.

"Well, Raye Penber's wife has gone missing; the very FBI agent I had assigned to watch over Light Yagami, and to report to me anything out of the ordinary or worrisome. I have been informed that before she went missing, she had been trying to get in contact with the task force and I, with information regarding the case. In regards to how she disappeared I believe there is a 75% chance of Kira finding out that she had some important information to deliver to us that threatened their identity, and Kira had simply gotten to her first.

"Which brings us to matter at hand of the suspects; Mr. Yagami and I have also been watching the Yagami home as well as the Kitamura home for the past couple days, which is what we'll be discussing at this moment." L answered nonchalantly, though in spite of this, he gave Evelyn a hard look, discretely, from the corner of his eye. With the tiniest nod, Evelyn stated she instantly caught on to what he was trying to express to her; it was exactly like what they had been talking about earlier before she had escaped. Light was a major suspect for the case, and so the fact that not only has Raye Penber died an unfortunate death (the very man that had been following Light, and had actually made contact with the teenager), but now his wife has spontaneously "gone missing."

And even if the blonde woman hadn't known for a fact that Light is Kira, Evelyn knew she'd still be convinced of Light's guilt.

She nodded, signaling for the black haired detective to continue.

"During the past few days I've listened to all of our tapes and viewed the video footage we've captured many times, and I've come to a conclusion. Our surveillance among the Kitamura and Yagami households has revealed… nothing." L stated simply, popping a piece of chocolate into his mouth. The admittance caused Mr. Yagami to let out a sigh in both relief and annoyance as he ran a weathered hand through his aging hair, for despite the fact that he was glad some of the suspicion was finally off of his family, he now felt like they were starting all over again.

After all the Yagami and Kitamura households had been their largest suspects and their biggest lead.

After a moment of chewing onto more chocolate, the leading detective of the task force continued. " Hm, I will remove the camera's and the wiretaps."

"Ahh, all that and we still don't have any suspects." Matsuda groaned, his shoulders slumping. The eldest Yagami in the room turned to the boy in understanding.

"Its all right Matsuda, we'll just have to pursue other leads and narrow down the possibilities from there, but we'll get him." Mr. Yagami said confidently and strongly, when in reality, he was feeling just as frustrated as his youngest task force member.

"Hm," L hummed. "Please don't get the wrong idea. I only said that we were unable to reveal anything suspicious based on our surveillance."

"W-what!" Yagami exclaimed in a rare moment weakness; the older man had no clue what to say. Though it was obvious from his tone that he was both disbelief, and a little angered that his family was still considered suspicious.

"Hm… even if Kira was among them, I'm sure he wouldn't make it obvious. No. In fact, it could mean he was able to continue killing without doing anything outwardly suspicious." The other detective replied in consideration, not at all put off by the older man's exclamation. Picking up a tea cup that resided next to his, the detective offered it to a silent Eve, who accepted it just as silently. The two then sipped their tea as if L just hadn't told a member of the task force that his family was still under suspicion and still needed to be taken inconsideration, while Yagami continued to stare at them with shock and reluctant acceptance.

"Then… you still believe Kira is among one of those families?" Mr. Yagami asked solemnly after a long moment.

"As I've said there's still a percent chance," L shrugged easily, calm and collected compared to the Yagami's stiff desperation.

"Kira was still killing even while the surveillance cameras were in place…" Evelyn thought to herself out loud, her eyebrows furrowing in concentration.

"What are you thinking Miss Ramika?" L asked, even though he already knew what the blonde was getting at.

"If Kira was not a part of those two families, and yet knew about the cameras and wiretaps, wouldn't he stop killing for a least a couple days to plant that seed of doubt? After all, if he had the suspicion being put solely on them by stopping long enough to us to suspect them, and to make it seem like the "Kira" in that household needed time to get around those wiretaps and cameras, while the task force is focused the wrong people, they can continue what they're doing until the law enforcement catches on; just with a small delay. However, if Kira was a part of those two families, and had found out about the camera's and the wiretaps, he then would continue killing to take the suspicion back off of both him and his family." Evelyn pointed out, taking a sip of her tea afterwards to soothe her barely used throat.

"And how could they possibly know about the wiretaps and camera's? They're practically microscopic," a task force member asked, seemingly not impressed with Evelyn's deduction.

"How is Kira able to kill criminals across oceans at the same exact time? How Kira able to influence them before their death? How is Kira able to get to them while their guarded in their prisons? How was Kira able to kill Lind Taylor over a television screen? How is Kira able to just simply kill them? You cannot except the expected for this case; Kira is unlike any criminal any one has ever seen before," the blonde barely growled out between gritted teeth, her blue eyes shooting daggers into the law enforcement officer, causing him to flinch back.

The rest of the task force, however, nodded along with what Eve was saying, making sense of her deductions.

"Ramika is correct; Kira is not some average nobody you meet on the street. Which means we cannot discard the Kitamura and the Yagami households as suspects just yet." L stated, rubbing his bottom lip thoughtfully.

I still don't know how he's committing these murders… Let's just say he could kill people by simply wishing death upon them, you'd think that any human being would at least show some emotion. Some sign that there were knowingly committing an act of murder, so the obvious answer is that Kira couldn't be one of them. However, Kira does seem to have a bit of god-complex, which is why he's undisturbed by these murders. To him, he's simply judging and destroying sinners, and so he doesn't show a bit of expression because to him they are just something filthy. The absurd answer would be that Kira doesn't really exist, and this is all just wrath from some vengeful god. L shook his head, taking a drink of his tea.

"Just remember, Kira has easily killed hundreds of criminals through series of heart attacks that we have yet to figure out how, and has now killed agents as well without being caught. He is manipulative, bold, intelligent, and will do anything to continue "cleansing the world of the wrong-doers". We cannot rely on him making any mistakes, or being too obvious in his day-to-day activities." L stated sharply, his dark-ringed eyes gazing deeply into every single task force member, reminding them that Kira was no common criminal that would beg a jury for mercy, claiming they were good people and didn't mean to commit the crime.

No, Kira's a person who would manipulate the jury to believe that what they had done was for the good of the people; that it was something that needed to be done. The genius detective thought to himself, allowing his words to set in.

"For time being, take a break. Go home to your families, and catch up on whatever sleep you've been lacking. We'll meet again tomorrow," he dismissed calmly as he took a bite into a piece of cake, acting as if the air hadn't been filled with a heavy, glooming silence.

Evelyn's calculating eyes darted over to him, knowing the male enough to know that something was up. Obviously he dismissed the task force for some important reason; he was not a man that beloved that social interaction and sleep was much needed things for a person to live on. He wants them gone… or maybe, someone specific gone. But for what… of course; L is planning something for Light, and didn't want to offend Mr. Yagami even more than he already has. Though he probably only cares because Mr. Yagami knows too much to either leave or be kicked out of the task force, which he would surely do if it meant his family's safety and privacy was at risk.

Once the last task force member left the room, the blonde scarred woman turned to the raven haired male, a single delicate eyebrow raised in questioning. They both knew what she was asking.

"I'll be going to a University Entrance Ceremony." L said simply.

"You're going to make contact with Light Yagami." It wasn't a question.

"I believe now is perfect time than any to do so. Besides, he is our biggest suspect; despite its risks I'll get to know who he is exactly better by actually confronting him." Evelyn nodded in understanding, knowing that watching a teenage boy study behind a camera doesn't really explain who he is as a person. Making direct contact would be incredibly beneficial, for interactions and reactions tell a lot about a person.

Yet, the blonde was confused as to why it didn't sit right with her knowing that L would be encountering someone she knows for a fact is Kira.

To be continued…

A/N: I've been nearly done with this chapter for a long time now! I, however, got hit with a bout of sickness twice and found I was too weak to write. But I'm back, and now more into the show than I have been for the past couple chapters. I re-watched the series finale of Death Note and that helped me get more back into it; it's my favorite episode, the betrayal, the reveal of the true mad-man, Near's cuteness, and Matsuda's panic attack really shows the human race at it's finest lol.

THANKS FOR REVIEWING! I will not be answering reviews this time, sorry. I will however answer any PM's my way.

Also, if you want to keep up with this stories or my other stories I will be posting updates in progress on my profile page. That way you'll know whether or not you'll see a chapter soon for a certain story
