JUDGING A BOOK BY ITS COVER
Sandy was walking through the forest of Burgess. As not too many people knew Sandy liked to go on walks like this often. As fantastic as the sky was he liked to have two feet on the ground sometimes. Strolling in the forest was appealing to him. In the forest everything was silent. No one could hear you. Not that anyone did anyway. The difference was that no one was there to ignore him. In fact the birds swirled around his head chirping in his ear and then zipping off. They reminded him of Tooth. She never payed much attention to him, always talking, too much noise. The enormous trees encompassed him, he felt small and almost over powered, much like North. Always making a huge deal out of the tiniest things. Sandy was swept away and discarded whenever North was talking. Bunny had an attitude that at times amused Sandy. Surprisingly the Easer Bunny did pay attention sometimes but never when he was in a mood. Then again he never paid much attention to anyone when he was in a rage.
That left Jack. The snow crunched under Sandy's feet. He smiled at the glistening white frozen crystals. The spirit was Sandy's ears. Jack listened well. He tried his very best to understand what Sandy was saying, sometimes not succeeding but the effort was what mattered. It was when Jack was trouble that he was annoyed at the boy. He would moan and complain about Bunny or the season of summer, but then lighten up suddenly and try to capture his dream sand. Sandy would eventually get tired of Jack's tricks. He tried his best not to but he had a job to do.
Sandy shook his head and continued to walk. This was his time now. He wasn't going to think about anything. He was simply going to let himself get lost in a daydream.
"Out damned spot!"
Sandy stopped abruptly at hearing the voice. He glanced around searching for the source.
"Out I say!"
Sandy followed the sound until he came upon a clearing, blanketed in snow. There in the middle stood Jack. His arms out stretched, one with a book in hand. Sandy watched as Jack read from it, making wild arm gestures and facial expressions to go with the old English words.
"One, two, then tis time to do, Hell is murky,"
Jack laughed and put the book down on top of a small pile. Sandy peered further around the tree he was concealed behind and discovered another much higher pile of books. Jack picked the first one off the top and flipped it open. Tilting his head Sandy read the title "Dracula." Jack perched on top of his staff and quietly and contently read the book. Sandy crept out and waved at the winter spirit. No response. Sandy huffed and tugged on Jack's sleeve. The boy yelped in shock and fell off the staff, crashing onto the pile of books sending them scattering.
"S-Sandy. Oh hi. Geez no need to scare me like that."
Sandy apologised and handed Jack a copy of The Three Musketeers in French.
"Thanks,"
They piled up the other books and then sat down in the snow staring at each other puzzled by the same thing.
"So um why are you here Sandy?"
The little man shrugged but then made a scene of him strolling through the forest. Jack nodded and smiled.
"Yeah it's pretty around here huh?"
Sandy nodded enthusiastically, glad that he wasn't going to press him. Sandy made a book with a question mark. In turn Jack laughed and glanced at the ground.
"I like to read. I've been collecting books for ages. Took me a while to figure out how to read though,"
Jack missed the startled expression and exclamation mark that Sandy gave. He didn't know how to read before?
"Yeah I like reading out here, for the same reason you like taking walks here too I would imagine." Jack smirked.
Sandy couldn't help himself, he smirked back. He picked up The Three Musketeers again and raised an eyebrow.
"Oh French. I was bored so I learnt languages. I'm teaching myself to read in French why not start with that then,"
Nodding in understanding Sandy handed back to the book which Jack took into his cold slim hands and chose a different one. He opened to the first chapter and began to read. Jack gave him a small smile and copied him. Together they sat there for quite some time before eventually Sandy got up and showed Jack all the places he had found in the forest. For someone who had barely known how to tell an A from a B Jack was a pretty smart and fast reader. Sandy wanted to come back and read with him again, but maybe later. Jack had left a little while ago and he once again found himself alone. Sandy strolled along the frosted ground whistling his silent tune as stories churned away in his mind.
Short and sweet. Yay. Alrighty next up darkness! Hehehe. Prepare yourselves and stay tuned...
