Tests

Carlisle approached me carefully as the others came in behind him. He looked at my face briefly, requesting. I nodded stealing myself.

He crouched down and ran his hands over my body looking for the source of the injury. He was very quick and professional, checking all the bones and the joints. As he finished with the front finding no major injuries he slipped his hand underneath me and ran his fingers along my spine, gently probing. As he got to the middle of my back I wasn't able to keep back the scream.

He quickly withdrew his hand. Then Edward was back, he nodded to Carlisle and lifted me up.

"Emmett, get the bed. Jasper, move the couch. Esme, Alice, Rosalie can you bring the rest of the equipment?" He turned to me as a whirlwind of activity started around me. "Bella, you seem to have gained a new crack. It runs along your spin. This one seems to have snapped your spine in half which would be the source of your pain." He was talking very quietly, trying to be gentle even while giving me this news. As he was talking the room around me was changing. The plush couch was replaced by a very large hospital bed. Fancy equipment I could only assume was used for some medical reason soon surrounded it. A large cabinet was placed by the wall that that seemed to hold small precision tools and equipment. And as Carlisle finished his sentence, Edward gently placed me down into the bed, wincing as I moaned in pain.

He leaned in to me, pressing his head on my forehead, his sent overwhelmed me. I had forgotten how intoxicating it was, and with my heightened senses it was even better. I was getting dazed.

"This doesn't change anything." I said grudgingly. His lips twitched at the corners, the way I used to love, and he chuckled.

"Of course not." Yet he lingered. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath then pulled away.

Life took a very human pace.

Carlisle worked patiently around me, trying not to disturb me and cause me pain. It was oddly soothing to see him gliding gracefully around, using all the different instruments, taking tests. It took many days for him to complete taking all the tests he wanted to do. During all this time Alice and Rosalie hung around and discussed what my new room was going to look like.

"We can get a four post bed with a canopy!" squealed Alice. "And I can string lights in it. Oh! It would be so beautiful!"

I smiled. "Alice, you know I don't sleep."

"I know!" she said defiantly. "But it's pretty." She said this as if it should have been obvious.

Later Rosalie was playing with my hair while they watched TV. As she was pulling it into another hairstyle I looked up to her.

"Rose?" I asked. "Are you okay with me being here?"

She looked surprised. "Why do you ask?"

"Well, you never seemed to like me before, you know when I was human." I glanced away, embarrassed.

She laughed. "Yes. I was quite cold towards you." She paused. "Please forgive my past behavior, but I was jealous of you. You gained Edward's trust so completely and he loved you." She glanced away. "You have to understand that to me, he was like having an older brother. In my human life I was an only child. It was very lonely. I loved him; I still do but don't worry." She smiled at me. "It is the love of a little sister toward her older brother. I looked up to him, I wanted his attention and for him to love and be proud of me. To see him give you so much attention, and love made me angry toward you." She smiled at the memory. "I have since, gotten over my childish jealousy. You are part of the family. You are my sister." She finished with a firm conviction that stirred my heart.

"Thank you." I whispered.

She waved her hand as if it was nothing and continued styling my hair.

"Bella?" I turned my attention to Carlisle. "I have some results."

Edward looked up from the corner he had occupied ever since I had moved into the living area. I tried to convince him to leave and he just sat determinedly on the easy chair and he hasn't moved yet.

Now he got up and walked gracefully toward me and the large bed I occupied. Tearing my eyes from his body I turned toward Carlisle and waited for his news.

"Most of my equipment didn't work, as I expected. Your skin is now too hard and solid to scan or penetrate. However I have taking some basic measurements and have come to some conclusions." He looked at me curiously. "Did you feel something odd right before the incident?"

I started, how did he know? "Yes, I felt something move, change almost."

He nodded expectantly. "Yes I thought so. Bella, when you first came here I had taken measurements of your stomach. And when the incident happened I measured again. There are some distinct differences." He paused. "Bella, this might be a bit shocking but I believe that the child you are carrying is part werewolf. The movement you felt was him changing into a wolf."

We all looked at him speechless.
