Chapter 25
CAL'S POV
We were almost to Rangeman when I noticed Ranger and Tank running toward a car that was stopped in the street. The woman in the driver's seat saw them and seemed topanic.
"Hold on!" I said as I turned the SUV to block the car, then we braced for impact.
BEVERLY'S POV
No I can't go to my aunt's, I'm sure they will find me there. I guess I could see if a co-workerwill let me stay with them, for a few days. I'll tell them I have no water or something.
What is that? Who is running in the middle of the street with guns? Oh my god! They are running towardme!
I step on the gas.
Where did that SUV come from? Oh no!
RANGER'S POV
I had my gun in hand, running toward the car. I wasn't going to let her get away. If I had to I would shot out the tires.
She must have spotted us, because she suddenly took off.
Right when I was taking aim to shoot the tires, I noticed one of my SUVs cut her off. I heard thecrunch of metal and glass breaking.
"Outside now!" I barked in to my phone for my company medic.
Tank and I ran to the vehicles.
"I'll check her, you check the guys!" I said.
"On it!" Tank said.
I walkedslowly to the driver side door, with my gun still drawn. Once I got to the window I noticed she appeared to be unconscious. What's more, it looked like she'd possibly hit her head on the steering wheel.
BOBBY'S POV
When I got Ranger's call, I grabbed my bag and double-timed it downstairs. I motioned to Manny and Diaz to follow me and continued out to the street. I went to the vehicle where Ranger was standing and quickly checked out the unconscious woman lying against the steering wheel. Once I was comfortable with the idea of moving her, I motioned to Manny and Diaz that they could move her from the car to the building.
I watched the guys, carefully lift Beverly and head for the building before I went over to our guys in the SUV. They had some minor cuts and scrapes, nothing that a few Band-Aids wouldn't fix.
I turned to Ranger. "Although they seem to have come out of this with minor injuries, they might have hit their heads so it wouldn't hurt to monitor them for a day or two to make sure they don't have a concussion."
I headed back inside with Ranger so I could check on Beverly. As I walked into the room where she was, I noticed she was starting to stir. I moved closer to her, keeping my voice gentle as I said, "I'm not going to hurt you. I'm the company medic for Rangeman. I just want to check you out to make sure you're okay."
She nodded her head, but I wasn't sure she fully heard or comprehended what I was saying.
I went over to Ranger."I need to make sure she knows what's going on before you'll be able to talk to her. She seems out of it, so I don't think you'd get the answers you want right now."
He nodded and left me to my work.
TANK'S POV
I called for tow trucks to come get the vehicles out of there, then grabbedany personal effects Beverly had in her car and took them inside.
Once I knew the guys were okay, I called the police stationto apologize for not calling them sooner.I let them know we were testing a new suspect apprehension told me they would field calls from concerned citizens and in the future they would appreciate a heads up before the testing took place.I thanked them and hung up.
Cal walked up to me and said, "Ifyou want to go with Ranger I'll wait for the tow. They should be here soon, anyway."
I studied him for a minute to make sure he was steady on his feet, then nodded.
RANGER'S POV
While I stood waiting for Bobby to tell me the woman was ready for me to question, I couldn't help but to be thankful that we'd caught her before she could do anything to harm Stephanie or the babies. I didn't think her intentions were to harm the babies...but Stephanie was another matter. Especially if she was planning what we thought she'd been.
When Bobby came over to tell me Beverly seemed out of it, and he'd need to make sure she knew what was happening before he'd allow us to question her, I kept my blank face in place as I nodded to him and left the room.
Once I was in the hall outside the door, I motioned to Bones and Fisher. They took up guard positions and I knew the woman in that room wouldn't be going anywhere unless I gave the okay.
I made my way up to the apartment to tell Steph what had happened. When I walked into the den, it was to see the three of them gathered around a laptop planning the day care.
"Hello, Babe," I said as I walked over to them, leaning over to give Stephanie a soft kiss, then nodding to the other two. "Ladies."
"Is she here?" She asked, cutting to the chase.
"She is. "I went on to tell her what had happened.
"I have to go check on them." She said, standing.
I wrapped my arms around her, holding her to me. "Babe, they are fine, but if you want to see themthenlet's go see them." I kissed her hair, marveling at her capacity for loveāfor myself, as well as my men.
"Carlos." Val said. OnceI looked at her and she continued with her thought. "Where is Beverly? I really want to see her."
"I would too if you don't mind." Mary Lou added.
"Bobby is checking her over, then once he's finished, I'm going to go in and talk to her." I told them.
Mary Lou rolled her eyes, "I think you should let us talk to her. You can be kind of intimidating and you might panic her more than she already is. Then we might never know what we want to know."
I had to admit, she had a point, andI could see they really wanted to do this.
"Carlos," Steph said softly. "Let them do it. It will give the doctor time to get here."
I nodded my head. "Ok. Let'sgo down to five and you can check on the guys while we wait for Bobby to get done."
All the woman nodded in agreement, heading for the door.
STEPH'S POV
Val and Mary Lou suggested theidea of themtalking to Beverly. It made sense to me. We would learn more if she wasn't panicked and scared. Once that was decided we needed to get our minds in happy places, so we started to talk about what we would need for the day care.
I wasn't surprised when Val brought the subject up. What did surprise me was how quickly Carlos had agreed to letting them question Beverly.
When we stepped off the elevator, the first person I saw was Hector. He had some bandages on his arms and a few scratches on his face.
"Oh Hector." I said
"I ok, Chica." He said.
I lightly hugged him, afraid of hurtinghim more.
My gaze landed on Woody next. He was sporting a few more bandages, cuts, and scrapes than Hector.
"Woody, are you ok?" I felt the tears burn as I lightly touched the bandageon his arm.
"I'm just fine, darlin'. It willheal and I'llbe better in no time. Cal gave us some warning of what he was doing so I was prepared." He said and then added, "Besides, we'd do anything to keep you safe." He leaned down and gave me a hug and kiss on the cheek, before walking away.
I wiped the tears from my eyes and went in search of Cal. He was just stepping off the elevator. He just had a few scrapesandlittle cuts.
"Are you ok, Cal?" I asked knowing what he would say.
"I'm fine. I've had worse." He said giving me a hug.
I felt Carlos behind me, so I leaned into him and let the tears fall.
"Babe, why are you crying?" He asked with a worried look.
"I'm ok. Stupid hormones!" I said.
VAL'S POV
I could tell as Steph went from person to personthat they would all lay down their life to keep her safe. I smiled thinking how my sister probably was blind to it all. I walked over to Carlos.
"Do you have a picture of just Steph's head?" I asked.
"Yes, in my office." He said leading the way. "Do you have a plan?"
"I do." I told him.
"Ok, we have the room wired with video and audio." He told me.
I smiled and took the picture and felt the need to say, "Wecan do this, I promise."
"I know." He said walking me out of his office. He went straight for Steph.
Bobby got off the elevator and announced Beverly was ready.
Carlos looked at Mary Lou and me,then announced, "Val and Mary Lou will be talking to her first."
I could see the shock on a few of the faces.
Bobby came over and looked at both of us and asked, "Ready?"
"Yes." We both said, then followedhim to the elevator.
