Here's the Epilogue! And as for the deal with Aline, there was a sequel planned, but unfortunately it's not going to happen. I'm so sorry for that missing detail, but I'm sure you guys can use your imaginations ;)
6 Years Later
At exactly 1 in the morning, the loud ringing of a phone sounded. I blinked with my eyes still groggy from sleep. Jace reached over to the bedside table and patted his hand around, searching for the phone. I heard him mumble a greeting into it.
He breathed soundly almost as if he was asleep while listening to the other end of the phone. Suddenly, he bolted up.
"Ok, ok I'll be right there. Don't go anywhere," he almost yelled into the phone. I sat up too and put a hand on his arm worriedly.
"What's wrong?" I asked, "What happened?" He had already gotten out of bed.
"I don't know. Something happened. She called for a ride back," he told me as he pulled on a shirt.
Belle had gone to a birthday party and was sleeping over. I hurriedly climbed out of bed and started to get dressed.
"It's fine Clary. I'll take care of it. You should rest," he eyed my slightly bulging torso.
"No, I'm going. It's our daughter," I said, emphasizing the our. Either he didn't want to waste time arguing or he agreed with me, but he finally gave in.
A couple minutes later we arrived at the curb of her friends house. There on the stairs was Belle with her duffel bag beside her. She sat, hugging her knees to herself, with her head down.
"I'll go get her," I got out of the front seat. After coaxing her in, I sat in the back holding her as silent tears cascaded down her face.
Finally back to our room, Jace and I sat on either sides of Belle. I spoke quietly," what happened?"
"H-he cheated on me... with her." I guessed that "her" would be her best friend-the one who held the party. "m-my best friend," she said, confirming my theory. Alarmed, Jace looked to me with an eyebrow raised, and mouthed," boyfriend?"
I shrugged as if to say I didn't know. We both made eye contact to agree to talk about this later. I rubbed Belle's back as she sobbed.
"Why don't you get some sleep honey," I said. I felt her nod in my embrace. "Jace, go out to the sofa or Alec's room tonight."
"Dad can stay," I heard her murmur in between sniffs.
Jace climbed under the covers and I turned off the lamp on the bedside table. We both lay on either sides of Belle, holding her in our arms as she experienced her first heartbreak.
In a couple days, Belle had finally gotten over it and established him a jerk. And once Jace had gotten the ok, he set out to interrogate Belle.
"Belle! What is this about a boyfriend! Come out and talk to me!"
His voice could be heard echoing throughout the numerous hallways.
Belle, once again, had yelled, "love you, mom!" and slipped quickly out of the institute.
Belle's POV
As everyone was sitting at the dinner table chattering away, I stayed silent. I gulped down another bite of the peas and chewed rapidly trying to calm my nerves. I reached for the water and chugged down half of it, soothing my dry throat.
"Belle, can you pass the salt?" Uncle Alec asked.
"W-what?" I was startled out of my trance. He repeated himself and I passed it to him, almost knocking over my glass of water in the process.
"What's wrong Belle? You look kind of pale." Aunt Isabelle said, peering over at me.
"I-I..." I took a deep breath. Everyone's attention was now on me. "I want to go demon hunting with you." I looked down. I couldn't face the results of what I had said.
"Belle, is that all?" Mom said as she touched my shoulder. I nodded rapidly, unable to look anywhere but down at a tiny hole starting to form in my jeans. All of a sudden everyone started chuckling. My head sprung up and stared around, red faced.
"What? " I asked in a demanding tone. Is the idea so ridiculous that it was worth this amount of laughter?
"It's okay, you can come with us." Mom said. I looked over at dad for approval.
He gave a curt nod. "Yes, I think you're ready."
"Think she's ready? Didn't you start sneaking out at age 10, Jace?" Mom asked with a teasing tone.
"Well that's different." Dad said, unable to come up with anything better. The only person to bring down my sharp witted dad was mom.
"Come on Clary, I still don't think she's ready," Dad whined. I silently fumed at this in my head. He was the one who taught me and said that I was in fact "ready".
"Jace," mom said in a patronizing tone. "You know well enough that she's old enough. She's almost as old as you were when we met. And trust me, I know the kinds of things you did back then." Dad childishly pouted and slumped back having nothing to say.
"Come on, let's go!" I said excitedly. My aunt Isabelle fitted me in a dark colored suit. It was skin tight at the top and fanned out in a flowy fabric at the waist. I had several types of blades hidden into it, one of which was in my boots. I was fascinated by how light and unnoticeable they were. I had always wondered how my parents got around not telling me about this world. They always seemed so normal, so... mundane. There were no suspicious weapons, gear, or talk that gave anything away. The only thing that made them stand out was the way they looked. They looked much younger than the other parents of kids in my grade. I later found out that because they were shadowhunters, they aged differently. However I didn't always know that.
*Flashback*
"Mommy, why do you and daddy look so young?" I asked as an 8 year old.
She bent down to look at me, looking up trying to conjure an answer. "The kids at school said it was because you were a slut," I sniffed, tears forming in my eyes. I recalled the tone they said it in."Mommy, what's a slut?" I looked into my eyes very seriously, her green eyes matching my own.
"That is something that you shouldn't repeat. It's a not a very nice word to use." I gasped not realizing the full extent of the meaning.
"B-but that's what they called you!" I yelled getting angrier by the minute.
"Well it's true that we had you young, but we look young simply because we may age slower than some people," she said gently.
"Why?" I was a curious child.
"Maybe it's just in our genes," mom said.
"What are genes?" She laughed and launched into another explanation.
*End of Flashback*
I remember the time that they told me about the shadowhunting world. I was shocked to say the least. To me, my mom was the peaceful artist who at times released her inner fierceness and became the only person who had power over my dad. And my dad was just the immature, overconfident, awesome dad who read me stories and taught me lessons about stinky boys. At that I would reply," But you're a boy daddy!" And we would both laugh, even when the reason was unknown to me. These memories of picnics in the park, watching movies together, and doing normal things never gave me any suspicion. When I was 10 years old, my parents finally caved and decided to give me the choice.
*Flashback*
"Belle, your dad and I need to talk to you," my mom waved me over to the small round table they were both sitting at. I got anxious thinking I was in trouble again. I looked up and saw them both giving me gentle, assuring smiles. I sat cautiously down on the chair bracing myself for any kind of reprimanding.
"Honey, we want to tell you something really serious and we think you're old enough for it now."Mom said, then cleared her throat and looked at dad, nudging her head towards me. It seemed to be a signal of some sort. A million thoughts flew through my head. Were they getting a divorce? No, they got along so well and were so in love. Sometimes I even caught them making out on the couch like teenagers. I pretended I didn't see though, and walked back into my room. Was it "the talk" the kids at school were having with their parents? Oh god I hope not. I braced myself for the worst. Mom cleared her throat once more.
"Oh! um..." Dad seemed to be surprised. "I thought you were going to start," he whispered under his breath, even though I heard it all. Mom just glared at him. "So Belle," he laughed nervously, "have you ever heard of shadowhunters?" I shook my head no. "They're the ones that fight demons and protect people from getting hurt."
"Like police?" I asked.
"Yes, kind of." He confirmed. "They-"
"Demons?!" I exclaimed finally realizing what he just said. "They're real?"
"Yes." With that, he looked to mom for help.
"Belle, honey, this is going to be kind of complicated. But what we have to tell you is very important." mom said gently. I nodded rapidly, anxious to know what it was since I wasn't in trouble. "There is another side of our world. There are two types of people;shadowhunters and downworlders. Downworlders consist of vampires, werewolves, and warlocks." I stared at her wide eyed and speechless. She continued," the shadowhunters protect people from demons. Your dad and I, along with aunt Isabelle, uncle Alec, and your grandparents are shadowhunters." I kept staring.
"Belle? Are you okay?" Dad asked, worry etched on his face. He turned toward mom, "Clary, maybe we should stop for today." Mom glanced worriedly at me. I shook my head furiously wanting to hear more. The curiosity in me begged for more.
"Okay then. Belle, did you understand all of that?" I nodded again. All of a sudden, they both took my hands and all our hands were in some sort of bundle in the middle of the table. I don't know why, but I found it funny. I bit the side of my cheek to keep from laughing.
"We want to give you a choice. Do you want to enter our world and become a shadowhunter like your dad and I , or do you want to pretend this talk never happened?" Mom stated patiently. They both gazed at me and I could tell they were anxious for my answer.
No matter how I tried I could conjure up nothing but unintelligible words. "I-I ..." Mom put a hand on my arm.
"It's okay. You don't have to answer us now. Why don't you think about it."
I nodded for the nth time today and slid out of my chair. I wandered down the hallway half dazed and closed the door to my room behind me. After having a freak out session for 10 minutes, arguing with myself in my mind, I came out with an answer.
They were overjoyed by my decision of course, when I told them I'd like to join their world and I had been participating in training sessions ever since.
*End of Flashback*
After preparing,my parents told me we were going to go to the pandemonium. They told me it was a place where demons frequent, and somewhere they could go for a definite chance in catching demons.
With help from my aunt Isabelle, I managed to sneak a dagger in my boots. It probably wouldn't be used, but it was only for emergencies.
As we got there, I couldn't help but stare and all the people. They had strange colored hair and were pierced in many places. I asked about this and mom said that some of the stranger looking ones were demons. All in all, they looked like humans, but of course that was their disguise.
I followed them through the crowd anxiously. Mom walked over to a man by the bar and started to talk to him. Did they know each other? I looked up at aunt Isabelle and she mouthed "demon". I watched as she pressed her body towards him. I was half tempted to look away as it was making me uncomfortable but my curiosity got the best of me and my eyes remained forward. A sudden thought passed through my head and I tore my gaze away. I stared up to my left where dad was. He looked calm but was looking away as if trying to avoid looking at the scene in front of us. I returned my attention just in time to see her leading him towards a door in the back. We moved a little closer, still concealing ourselves in the crowd. I squinted my eyes and saw him with a sinister grin on his face. The blue of his hair gleamed different colors due to the swirling lights on the ceiling. He pulled at his collar and suddenly as if he heard a signal, turned his head. Then in a millisecond bolted through the crowd, sprinting out the back door.
And then we were on the move. My heart pounded in my chest not because we were running, but because of the thrill of it all. We got outside and I gaped at what I saw in front of me. The man had transformed into a large thing that you could only describe as demon. There were multiple horn like things on his head and multiple legs sprung out of his body. His legs and body were covered with a dark fluid that was increasing with time. It seemed to squirt out of minuscule holes from his body. Behind him was a whole army of what looked like clones of him. They were a bit smaller but were still humongous and towered over the building behind us. His minions consisted of dark colors like himself and snarled their teeth at us.
I fell back a step and would've fallen over if aunt Isabelle didn't catch me.
In an instant, my mom, kind and gentle, raced towards the demon. I don't completely recall what exactly happens, but colors and sounds flooded my senses. I thought I saw my dad leap in towards the demons, however in my state, my account on events wasn't exactly reliable. To say it was overwhelming would be an understatement. It was conflicting. I felt a need to jump in, to join the fight. However, my feet were glued to the ground and my mind thought otherwise. The battle continued on and I flinched when the black oozing substance hit the sleeve of my started to burn through the fabric and I screamed, eyes wide with panic. Calmly, aunt Isabelle removed my sweater and gave me another that was black and shiny. I suspected that it was whatever that black stuff was-proof.
After the whole incident with the demons, I could say that I was scared but at the same time I was excited. I knew I still had a long way to go before my parents would let me fight alongside them, but I was determined that the day was not too far in the future.
We stopped by Taki's, the family favorite, to grab some dinner before heading home. As we sat closely in the small booth of the diner laughing and talking, I had a revelation. I realized how glad and thankful I was to be where I was. My parents were together and the entire family had such a closely knit relationship. I knew that wasn't the case for everyone, and I knew to appreciate how lucky I was. I was content, and though I had a small worry in my mind about shadowhunting, I told myself that I shouldn't be. It ran in my blood, literally. After all, I was born for this.
A/N: And that's a wrap! Here's the epilogue I promised almost 3 years ago. I still can't believe the last time I updated was August of 2013. That was when I started losing interest in fanfiction, and I honestly thought I would just leave this story altogether. I recently found the epilogue I had written over 2 years ago buried in my notes and decided it wouldn't be right to leave my one and only story without marking it as complete. I doubt any past readers will still remember or care about this story, but I do hope that any reader old or new who reads this enjoys it!
And to those who still have this story on alert, this is for you. You're a real trooper. Thanks for sticking with me for so long ^_^
