. . .
Mikan smiled as her eyes gazed at the love of her life's dark hair. Holding her one hand, he was bending his head. His lips softly caressed the back of her hand a couple of times, followed by mumbles of sorry.
"Jun, that's enough! I'm okay," Mikan laughed.
Jun held up his head and a worried look clearly portrayed on his smooth face. "I'm sorry I left you. I was so worried if anything happens."
Mikan smiled. God, what would she do if he were not around? Using her other hand, she cupped his cheeks. "You only left me for like, ten minutes. Honestly Jun, that's hardly nothing!"
"Ten minutes are fucking long! And I was so damn worried as well!" Jun whined then pouted his lips a little. MIkan swore her grin could just maybe reached the top of her head. "I don't even understand why Narumi insisted for me to go to his office. He wasn't even there!"
Mikan pat his head and ruffled his hair. "I'm sure he has his reasons." Why did Narumi's like that anyway?
"Are you feeling any better? How are your eyes?"
"Superb!" she grinned widely. Then scowling, she added, "But these eyes, they would clearly scared the shit out of people."
Jun laughed out loud and pulled her into a hug. As they sat on the hospital bed, he wrapped his longs arms around her small body and pulled her into his laps. He placed his chin on her shoulder. "Look, I don't know about other people but I found it rather hot actually. Those eyes kinda turn me on." He grinned slyly.
"Would you stop?" Mikan laughed at his flirtatious remarks. "You are really out of your mind. I look like crap!"
"True," he replied. Expecting a frown to break on her face, Jun smiled and landed a soft kiss on her shoulder. "But I still love you anyway. You're beautiful even if you look like crap."
She shifted on his laps and turned around. "That compliment sounds awfully wrong."
Jun groaned. "Even our positions are awfully wrong right now."
Mikan jumped out of his lap and blushed scarlet red. She playfully smacked him by his arm. "You don't say things like that when you're the one who pulled me in!"
Jun laughed his gaiety laugh at her reactions and pulled Mikan towards him one more time before abruptly smacking his lips with hers. It was not a long and deep one but enough to leave Mikan's breathless and hanging onto his shoulders. "I hate you." She snuggled her face into his chest, hiding her entirely blushing face from his eyes.
"No baby, you hate me because I made you blush." He brought her face up and tilted her chin for another peck. The bed made a creaking sound as he tried to get down. Straightened his uniform up, he took one more look at her before a frown formed on his handsome face.
"What's wrong?" Mikan looked worriedly at him.
"I've got class but I don't want to leave you."
Mikan smiled. Dragging her butt across the sheets to the end of the bed, she stood on both of her knees so she could be on eye level with Jun. One hand placed on his check, she planted a small kiss on his other cheek. Her thumb mindlessly caressed the soft skin. "You want me to come with you?"
A beaming smiled quickly lighted up his whole face before it disappeared in just a second. His forehead creased and his brows furrowed into a line. "You're supposed to stay in the room and get better."
"I'm better already!" she whined but continued twisting her body here and there, doing a small exercise to show that she's really okay. Physically at least. "And besides, I've been stuck in here for one week already!" she held his hands and swung them in hope to melt his heart a little so he would bend to her wish this time.
"I don't know, Mikan. As much as I want you out and have you all by myself right now, we're not breaking the rules to get you out." He shook his head but liking the fact that they're intertwining their fingers right now.
He watched as Mikan letting go their hands and suddenly scrambled down from the bed. She went for the drawers placed by the walls in the white room. Taking a white shirt out and he assumed the other thing she pulled out was a skirt, she turned to look at him with a coy smiled plastered on her face. "We? Who said it's 'we'? It's me who's breaking out." She winked. Her grin grew when she saw Jun's eyes bulged.
She began to head towards the small bathroom inside the room. Changing, he presumed. A minute after that, she came out, changed from the green overall hospital attire to a simple white t-shirt and a plaids skirt. Jun tried to make it unobvious that he was biting his inner cheeks from just looking at her. His hormone. Damn she looks even hot right now.
Well, his girlfriend is breaking out then, the thought finally sinking in. He sighed inwardly. Mikan is stubborn but he loves her so he'll just go with whatever she wants then.
He watched as she scrambled around the room, probably finding a pair of footwear to put on. "You don't have any shoes?"
Mikan looked at him with a glum face and shook her head. Her brunette tresses were still in a mess. Even with a messy hair, she looked cute. She walked to him and gave him her pouty face. "All I have inside this stupid room is these slippers." He looked down at her feet. It's what they often referred as flip flops, he think, was worn. "And ugh, this is one ugly pair." He had to agree because it is; clashing colors of striking orange with purple. He knew little about colors except for the basic ones like red, blue, green and such but he knew those slippers didn't go well with the white room. Made one think the one who bought them was color insane.
He ran his hand through her heavy brunette tresses, once in awhile pushing a couple of astray ones to the side. "That messy?" she had asked. He shook his head and continued doing it while smiling. He loved it. He loved how his fingers slide through her hair. It's perfect. "Why don't you wait here while I'll try and find something for you to wear?" His hand continued stroking her.
Mikan looked up and a cunning smile formed. "By find, you mean steal." She arched one eyebrow at him.
Jun laughed. "Whatever pleases you." He bent down and kissed her. "Wait here."
Mikan watched as he disappeared through the door. She flopped on the bed and lay on her back. She sighed in contentment. She rather liked Jun's protectiveness and obsessiveness. His change of behavior was easier to spot now. His ways of affection were evident and without doubt, getting clearer these days. All his actions were transparent. The kiss, the hugs and the constant touches, she liked them all. Jun was never the type to do excessive public display of affection. Now, even if he rarely did the actions when there are other people in the room, he would still trample them whenever and wherever he wanted to, whatever pleased him if it means he could have her all to himself. So PDA, yes. Just occasionally.
But she loved him still. She loved him for the way he was back then and she loved him more now. He's changing because of her. Now it's easier to see how much he loved her. She needed not any sweet words for confirmation because his actions already told her everything. Every single one of them.
Mikan abruptly sat up when the door burst open and Jun walked in with one of the most victorious adorable boyish grin she had ever seen on him, like he had won a FIFA world cup or something. In his hands were a pair of sneakers and he waved them at her, grinning. "I think this one can fit you."
Mikan looked at him in disbelief. That was fast. How could he get one so fast? "Where did you get them?"
Jun winked and headed towards her. "Somewhere." He got down on his knees before her, throwing the ugly flip-flops away and helped her putting on the shoes. Mikan stood up and walked around a little. "How is it? Comfortable?"
Mikan shrugged. "A little bit loose but at least they don't come off when I walk. This will do. Thanks. "
Jun nodded. Getting up on his knees, he grabbed her hands. Mikan looked at him questioningly. Just before she could open her mouth to ask, he had already pulled her and the next thing she realized, they were running out of the room.
"We need to go now before they realized one of the shoes are missing!" he breathed out, laughing, hands not letting go, legs won't stop running.
Mikan laughed out loud. Her belly was hurting and she wasn't sure due to she laughed too much or the fact that she's laughing while she's out of breath running. But it was damn funny! She saw the look of Jun's face when he told her that. He was out of breath and had a playful look on but he's also worried. It was one of the best facial expressions he ever made.
When they saw a group of people wearing white coats, Mikan started to panic. She shook her one hand that Jun was holding to get his attention. "Doctors!" She had heard Jun cursed before he pulled her towards other direction, exiting a hallway, taking the stairs and running towards a new one. They stopped in front of a door. It was the doctors' office. "Shit."
"The doctors are doing their regular morning check ups. It won't be long before they realized I'm not in the room," Mikan choked out between short breaths.
"Shit." Another curse escaped Jun's mouth.
He looked around. Except for the empty hallway, they didn't have any more other alternatives. But if a doctor decided to walk out of the office at this moment, they would be busted. His eyes roamed the whole place when he saw something that would save them both.
"Mikan, do you trust me?"
"What kind of question is—"
"Baby, you trust me, right?
"Of course! What is—"
She watched in stunt as Jun suddenly bent down and lifted her up in his arms, suddenly started running again. They headed towards a door down the hallway and Jun pushed the door open with his foot. It was the rooftop, she realized. Her heart beat like crazy when she noticed Jun's paces had not stopped nor slowed down; he continued running while holding her. Her eyes bulged when they neared the edge. Shit, this is crazy! "Jun! The hell is—"
"Trust me on this!" he pressed.
Her breath hitched up when they both jumped off the edge, into the air. Mikan grasped for Jun's shirt and held it tight. She shut her eyes so tight it was amazing she didn't feel the forceful pain. Her heart raced crazy like a grim reaper had chased her down.
They were falling.
Falling.
Fall.
Oh god.
Eh wait.
She timidly peeked under her eyelashes.
They're not falling.
They're not?
"I scared you, didn't I?" Jun's low voice came. His eyes danced with amusement.
She opened her eyes and bravely looked down. Her shoulders sagged in relief and she swore her heart was in a heart attack just now. She glared at him. If she wasn't holding him tight right now, she would have already punched him with one hand and pulled his hair with her other one.
"You dumbass! You should have told me your plan before you blindly jumped off the building with me in your arms!" she scolded him.
Jun's eyes glint in mirth as he chuckled. "You told me you trust me, didn't you? So why the scare?"
"Why the scare, my arse! It was a spontaneous answer and you," she let go one hand from her grasp and pointed a finger to his chest, "nearly killed me for a heart attack!"
Leaning against his chest ever so close for more safety reasons, Mikan could feel his chest rumbled when he laughed. "I'm guessing you actually forgot I have levitation alice."
Caught red-handed, Mikan looked away and blushed. Of course she forgot! Her thoughts were too engrossed in not getting busted by the doctors to the stupid question Jun suddenly asked out of nowhere and also to the thoughts she thought it was a crazy decision to jump and they're going to die. Oh, she definitely remember her boyfriend has a levitation alice. Mikan made a mental eye roll.
As his feet touched the ground, his grin grew. He arched an eyebrow. "Are you that comfortable in my arms? I don't mind holding you like this all day, you know."
A mischievous smile suddenly crept at the corner of her lips. She wrapped her arms around his neck and brought her face closer to his. Their noses touched. "Are you sure you can hold me up all day? I might not want to walk at all."
"On second thought, maybe not. You're quite heavy," he teased back.
Mikan laughed at his teasing and smacked his shoulder. "Put me down, Kouhei. You and your sly remarks," she chuckled and shook her head.
Jun placed her down slowly and carefully. They looked around. Seemed like they had jumped off the hospital building and landed on the back of it. Nice luck, now they needed not to run anyway. They could just take their time now.
Jun held her hands. "We need to hurry. Class starts in another ten minutes."
Or maybe not, Mikan sweatdropped.
. . .
It would be a total lie if Mikan said she couldn't care less about the eyes people were giving them as they walked down the hallways towards their class. She could not be that ignorant because the stares were dead obvious. She had concluded it must be because of two reasons. Firstly, the news about her encounter with the AAO had travelled like wildfire throughout the whole school. Or second, her red eyes were the main focus. She's betting on both.
"Don't worry, Mikan. You look hot with red eyes," Jun winked, assuring her in a teasing way, trying to ease her down. He tightened his hold of her hand and Mikan returned it with her own tight grasp, thanking his consideration.
She's aware of everything. The stares, the whispers, the looks passing on everyone's faces; she noticed them all. And the fact that she's not wearing any alice controllers at all, kinda scared her for she's frightened she would accidentally caused something she did not want to happen.
They had reached the open door of their class. She could see her classmates inside the class. Mikan suddenly halted her steps, resulting in pulling Jun's hand, making Jun stumbled on his steps a little. He looked at her worriedly. "You're okay? Do you want to go back?"
Mikan shook her head. She took a deep breath and looked Jun fully in the eyes. "I'm just.." she stuttered, glancing inside the class. She's having doubts. "Are you sure I'll do fine? You know..i'm not wearing any controllers right now. And I'm afraid if.." She looked at him hopefully. She needed trust and belief. She needed confidence. She needed to know he would be there if something happened. She needed him there.
Mikan snuggled her face into his warm chest when Jun pulled her into an embrace. One hand at the small of her back, the other slowly ran along the end of her brunette hair. She could feel his chest rise and fall when he took a breath and releasing it.
"I'm right here. I always am and always will be. Nothing is going to happen to you. I'll do anything to make sure it stays that way," he whispered softly against her hair before kissing it.
Mikan nodded her head in ease and wrapped her arms around his waist. She felt safe. She trusted him. She trusted him to stop her if anything goes wrong. She trusted him to save her if she goes wrong. She trusted him. He's gonna be there for her always.
He took a step back. "Okay? Get that? Now, can I please have my hot girlfriend's hand so we can walk inside the class like we effing own the whole place?" he held out his hand towards her with a cheeky grin etched on his face.
Merriness danced in her eyes as she took his hand with a smile. Jun tugged at her and they walked together inside, side by side, hands intertwined.
She was nervous but knowing Jun's there beside her calmed her down a bit. Jun never did let her hand go. Instead, as if he could sense her nervousness, he would tighten his grasp, letting her know that he's there for her.
And so braving her self, Mikan held her head high. She could see everyone now and she's betting most of the expressions played on their faces were utterly shock ones. Her bloody red eyes were disturbing, she knew. But they're recovering now. Slowly.
They walked down the aisle towards their seats. Kazuki was already there, napping with his head on the table. Mikan sent Jun a look and he just shrugged in response, not knowing the reason why.
Then her gazes met Natsume's crimson ones. His was desolate and his face held no expressions at all. He was back to cold and distant, far more worst than before, she had noticed. Another thing she had noticed was the slowly recovering red scar etching down at one side of his throat; from under his ear disappeared into his collar. She questioned herself what really happened back then and she wondered how far the scar was engraved itself on his body.
Shifting her gazes to the side, she saw Ruka's anxious blue ones. He too seemed surprised to see her bloody ones. He even looked nervous locking eyes with her right now. His face was blotched with purple bruises. Mikan guessed he was badly beaten at that time. She looked at his casted right hand. And they broke his arm.
Her hazel gazes slowly shifted back to the person sitting next to him. Natsume was still looking at her, them. His stares travelled down. He was looking at their intertwined hands. His crimson eyes turned hard and sombre. Their gazes locked for six seconds—she counted—before the spell was broken again.
What had happened?
TBC.
