Alek's POV
"I still can't believe how you guys are barely winded after running five miles." Chloe gasped out, struggling to breathe after we ran. She was struggling by the third mile, and looked like she was going to pass out after the fifth. We actually had to take a little break after the fourth so she could rest- something that I couldn't believe Mimi agreed to. It was an improvement when we first started her training when she couldn't even run the five miles.
"Five miles is nothing," Mimi answered but still handed Chloe a water bottle to drink from. Her breathing was heavier than usual, but it sounded like she could go on without any problem.
"Maybe we should run another mile or two." I suggested. Mimi looked surprised at my suggestion while Chloe looked a little mad. I was a little surprised that I asked that myself. It's just the thought of whatever was in Chloe's dream freaked me out. What if she wouldn't be ready enough to handle it? Running more might help her get to the point she needs to be at in order to save herself one day.
"That wasn't enough?" Chloe gasped out. "I feel like I don't have any lungs."
"Why do you want to increase it" Mimi looked at me suspiciously. Like she felt like I was hiding something from her. Which, I was, but couldn't tell her with Chloe right here. I didn't know when I was going to be able to tell Mimi that Chloe had another prediction.
"We should start increasing her training. We've been doing the same workout for a few weeks now. She should be ready to increase by now." I half lied to them. Chloe should be becoming more accustomed to the workouts, but it was the dream that made me want to increase it.
"It looks like Chloe is ready to pass out now," Mimi laughed. "Maybe we should give this routine another week before increasing it."
"Yeah, sounds good." I wanted to protest, but couldn't give the real reason on why I wanted to increase it so I just agreed.
"What are we working on today?" Chloe asked.
"You should get up," I told her.
"Five more minutes?" Instead of waiting for a response, Chloe collapsed to a laying position on the ground.
"Wimp," Mimi pitched in.
"I'm really okay with that." I rolled my eyes at Chloe, even though she couldn't see it, and pulled her up from the ground. I could see the beads of sweat on her forehead.
"We only have a little over an hour, so I was thinking that we could continue with the ninja stars. It seemed like you needed a lot more work on those." Mimi said as she took out the practice sheets from her bag.
"I'm never going to get the hang of ninja stars," Chloe moaned as she collapsed on her bed.
"You'll get them, eventually." I tried to reassure her when sitting down beside her. "You managed to get the hang of the staffs pretty quickly. This will just take a little more time. We can practice again tomorrow." I tensed up when I heard footsteps on the roof, but a second later recognized them. It was Jasmine, here to take over protection duty for me. Normally, I would want to stay with Chloe to be her guard, it I needed time to talk to Mimi and Valentina about her nightmares. It wasn't safe for her to be staying here when we knew she might die very soon, so I had texted Jasmine asking her to take over. "Jasmine's here," As soon as I said that, Jasmine came through the window.
"Morning Chloe," Jasmine said while sitting down on the window seat.
"Alek, are you leaving?" Chloe asked as she sat up next to me.
"Sad to see this pretty face leaving?" I joked resulting in getting a frown from Chloe. "I can't spend every minute with you Uniter, people might get the wrong idea." I leaned in to give her a kiss on her cheek. "I'll see you at school."
Ten minutes later, I found myself at the apartment. The nightmares were back. That meant that Chloe might die soon. How was I suppose to have her when I didn't know what the threat was. And she wouldn't tell me what the dream was about for whatever reason. I couldn't tell her why she needed to tell me, so that left only one thing to help her. Hopefully, Chloe doesn't find out what I am about to do.
The phone only rang for a second before Valentina answered. "What is it Alek? Is Chloe okay?" She asked frantically.
"Chloe is okay, for now." I didn't continue until I took a deep breath, trying to reassure myself that this was okay. "But she's had another nightmare, dream, prediction. Whatever you want to call it." I heard Mimi turn off the shower, probably listening to everything that I said.
"What happened in the prediction?" Her voice was no longer frantic, but calculating. Trying to come up with solutions to keep Chloe safe.
"She won't tell me." By this time, Mimi was in the living room with me, only wearing a towel, with a look of exasperation and worry on her face.
"What do you mean she won't tell you? We need that information now." I was never a fan of Valentina's scolding tone but it looks like I wasn't going to escape it now.
"I tried to get her to tell me for a few hours. She wouldn't. I don't know why she isn't telling me, but without telling her why she needs to tell me, I don't think she's going to say anything."
"You need to get that inform-"
"That's not going to happen!" I interrupted Valentina for the first time in a very long time. But the stress of knowing Chloe was in more danger than before was getting to me. "Not unless we tell her why she needs to tell us."
"Which you are not allowed to do. You know that Chloe would try to solve the problem herself and get herself killed in the process."
"I know that."
"So what do you propose that we do?"
"It's the weekend. We keep her at our apartment until we know that she's safe or come up with another plan."
"She won't stay here if she knows the real reason." Mimi piped in. "How were you planning on getting her to come over." Sadly, I already had an answered planned for that question, even though I knew that Chloe would hate it.
"We tell Chloe that Valentina wants us to up her training, but focused more on history to avoid what happened with the Jackals. That way she doesn't need to leave the apartment. And we have Valentina call her mom giving some excuse on why she wants her to stay over." Both Mimi and Valentina stayed quiet for a few moments, thinking if this plan would work.
"What do you want me to tell her mom?" Valentina answered through the phone, obviously hearing Mimi's question as well as my answer.
"You're going to be home late because of work thing. Tomorrow as well as Sunday, you'll be out all day and only home until after dinner. You were hoping that Chloe could keep Jasmine company the entire weekend since you felt bad you would be gone." The lie came too easily for me.
"Okay, I'll call her mother today." Valentina agreed to the plan. "But you need to figure out what her dream was about. It might be the only way to keep her fully safe." Without waiting for a response, she hung up.
"Are you really willing to lie to your girlfriend that much?" Mimi asked me.
"You might question my priorities." I answered her. "But, Chloe's protection will always come first for me. Don't doubt that."
Chloe's POV
"It's strange," I said to Jasmine when we were driving to school. "I wasn't expecting you to take over the protection duty. Alek's been refusing to leave my side since Kai came." I studied her reaction to what I was saying, trying to figure out if anything was wrong that they were keeping from me.
"Even he needs to shower and sleep," Jasmine laughed, eliminating any suspicions that I had. "I'm sure he's just a little tired. No doubt he'll want to be back on my the end of the day." Right when we pulled into the school parking lot, my phone rang. It was my mom.
"Hey, is everything okay?" I asked as I answered my phone. We had just seen each other around ten minutes ago when I left the house. Why would she be calling now?
"Yeah of course it is sweetie." My mother answered. Her tone didn't suggest anything was wrong. "Valentina just called me, explaining how she wanted you to stay the weekend with Jasmine."
"Oh," Was all I said to that. I looked over at Jasmine, wondering what was going on. Why would Valentina be calling my mom? Jasmine's faced looked like she was as clueless as I was. "I didn't realize she would call so early." I played along. If Valentina was calling my mom, that meant that she wanted me to stay over for some other reason than what she was telling Meredith.
"Yeah, it was a little surprising. But I think it's a great idea. I'm going to be in and out all weekend as well, so this way you can keep each other company. She told me that Alek would be away all weekend, so it will be just you and Jasmine, which is why I agreed for you to go over." Alek apparently had some explaining to do.
"Thanks mom,"
"Of course sweetie. Just promise me that you'll call or text me over the weekend? I want to know that you're okay."
"Yes, I will make sure to stay in touch."
"Love you,"
"Implied." Then she hung up the phone.
"I glanced over at Jasmine before I spoke. "What's going on?"
"I don't know. It's probably something about upping your training over the weekend, but I wasn't told about it." Suddenly, my door open. I jumped then spun around and saw Alek.
"You know, eventually you're going to have to start paying attention to your surroundings Chloe," Jasmine chastised behind me.
"Can I walk you to class?" Alek asked me, even though we had the same first class period. We were walking for only a few seconds before I asked him about the situation of me staying over the entire weekend.
"Oh, that." Alek said. "That's no big deal. Valentina heard that you didn't know about Jackals before meeting Kai and was a little upset. So this weekend she wants us to have a major history lesson to make sure you're prepared for anything else we might cross."
"That's going to take all weekend?" I groaned.
"No, we'll have time to breath."
"Very funny,"
"I know I am."
"Moving on. What's the plan for tonight? I need to work, then there's your basketball game. I'll only be able to make the second half."
"Easy," Jasmine said. "I'll watch you after school and during your shift. Then, after you finish, I'll take you to the basketball game to watch Alek. Then, we'll all head back over to the apartment together."
"Sounds good to me I guess."
"How come you didn't know about the major long history session?" I asked Jasmine. There weren't any customers in the shop, and Lena was in the back saying she's working on our records but is probably just talking to her boyfriend. Jasmine moved from the coffee shop to the store to keep me company until either Lena comes back, or a customer comes in.
"Valentina has mentioned it a few times. I just didn't know it would be this weekend." Jasmine said like it was unimportant. "What do you think of this shirt for my ext date with Derek?" She was holding up a pretty short sleeved blue top with a v neck.
"The color looks really nice on you." I told her. "I think you should get it."
"Really? It's not too much of a V-neck?" Before I had the chance to respond, Lena came back into the shop.
"Chloe? You can go now." Lena called from behind the counter. I glanced at the clock and saw that it was only 4:30.
"I still have thirty minutes left of my shift."
"It's clear that no one is going to come here tonight. There's no point in both of us being here tonight when there's nothing to do." Before she had the chance to change her mind about letting me leave early, Jasmine and I were already out the door.
"Sweet. We'll be able to make the start of Alek's game." I told her. "Not that I'll understand anything that's going on, but it should be fun anyways." Amy had texted me saying that she and Paul had saved me a seat. I wasn't sure where Mimi was at the moment, but hopefully she'll be there to explain the rules to us. While Paul knew a little, he didn't know enough to really explain.
"Yeah," Jasmine said without really listening. She was scoping the place out, being in protector mode. It was similar to Alek's, so I knew that she wouldn't be a great conservationist until she was sure I was safe.
"Come on Jasmine," I told her. "It's only a little walk. I'm sure that even I can stay safe during that small amount of time."
"There's no such thing as being too cautious Chloe. I just want to make sure that you're safe."
"And I am. Isn't that why I'm with you?" This time, she didn't respond. Her eyes narrowed into slits. Something wasn't right.
"Chloe, you need to run to the nearest public store and call Mimi. Tell her to come here now."
"What's going on? I don't-"
"Now Chloe!"
"I'm not leaving you alone to deal with-"
"Now Chloe!" Jasmine didn't leave any time for arguments before she took off after a shadow. I watched where she was running to, and saw Scarface hiding before taking off away from her. Without another moment of hesitation, I took out my phone and started run in the opposite direction of them. Luckily Mimi answered the phone on the first ring.
"Hey Chloe, the game just started. Are you-"
"Mimi, you need to get here, now!" I shouted into the phone.
"What's going on?" Her voice was suddenly alert, ready for anything. "Where are you guys?"
"I'm near the shop that I work at. Jasmine took off after Scarface. He's back." For the first time, I was glad that Alek and Jasmine had made me run so much during our trainings. Even though I've been sprinting nearly a mile, I hardly felt tired. Though, it could be the adrenaline.
"Okay, Chloe. I need you to tell me exactly where you are. I'm sending guys over now to help Jasmine out and I'll meet you." I could tell that she was trying to sound calm, but panic laced every word. Before I could reply, I was tackled to the ground, causing my phone to fall out of my grasp.
"We meet again, Chloe King."
