The next morning Elena woke up around 5am to here a soft knocking at her door, rubbing her eyes she let out a small groan and threw the covers off of her before stumbling over to the door. Who the hell could that be?

"Damon? What are you doing?" She asked as she opened the door to let him in.

Damon smiled as he walked into her room, Elena shutting the door before clumsily making her way over to him as he perched on her bed. "I just wanted to spend some time with you before we go back home."

"Damon, it is 5am in the morning," Elena reminded him as she crawled back under the covers. Damon stripped his shirt and pants off leaving his boxers on as he crawled into bed with her. She moved to rest her head on his chest as he wrapped his arm around her petite body. "Just go back to sleep 'Lena." Sleep. That sounds good.

Elena nodded sleepily and within minutes her breathing evened out and she was fast asleep. He watched his sleeping girlfriend with a content smile on his face until his own eyes began to shut lazily.

A couple of hours later Elena's eyes shot open when she heard a tapping on the door, panicking as she looked over at Damon she quickly shook him awake.

"Who is it?" Elena called out, giving Damon a chance to wake up.

"It's me Stefan. Have you seen Damon this morning? Mom wants us ready and packed to go in an hour." Uh oh...

Once Damon was in the bathroom Elena threw on a jumper and opened the door, "I'll let him know if I see him. Have you tried texting him?"

Stefan nodded, "Yeah but he left his phone in the room. See you in an hour 'Lena."

When Elena shut the door she smiled as Damon re-emerged, "I thought he would never leave."

"Damon," Elena warned, "You need to go back to your room now, we have an hour until we're going back to your grandparents'."

"Okay, okay I'll go but first," Damon stopped as he swooped down and pressed his lips onto hers, Elena smiled as she lazily kissed him back. I will certainly miss this.

Reluctantly pulling away she gave off a smirk, "Leave. I don't wanna have to smell your morning breath any longer."

"Oh please 'Lena, you can't get enough of me and you know it." True, oh so very true.

"Go," Elena said smiling as she pecked his lips one more time, "I'll see you in a while."

Once Damon had gone back to his own room Elena quickly showered and dried her hair before applying minimal makeup and finding a comfortable outfit for the journey back. She packed up the rest of her things into her suitcase and double checked she hadn't forgotten anything before she left.

When she got to the boys' room they were already sat watching tv as they waited for her. "Are you all ready to go now?"

Stefan nodded, "Moms just downstairs saying her goodbyes to Annie and her husband."

"Yes and that could take a while," Damon added rolling his eyes before making room on his bed for Elena to sit.

"So what are you watching?" Elena asked as she turned her attention to the TV rather than to Damon who was dangerously close to her. She wanted to give in and just throw herself at him but didn't think it appropriate with Stefan sat a couple of meters away.

"Desperate Housewives- Stef's choice. Right baby bro?" Damon teased smirking.

Stefan frowned, "Hey! You put this on just before Elena walked in so you could blame me! Are you trying to make yourself seem like the bigger man?"

"Please Stef, I am the bigger man," Damon stated as he threw Elena a wink, the two brothers just laughed at each other and turned the station over.

Eventually Mary came back upstairs to find her children and the four all brought their stuff down to the car before making the walk along to Linda and John's. Once John let them in Linda hustled them into the kitchen where she'd produced a large breakfast for each of them before they left for their journey.

"Wow, you didn't have to do all of this for us," Mary said as she hugged her mom.

Linda smiled, "Of course I did. Hopefully it'll get you to visit again soon." I really hope so. I don't want to say goodbye to this place.

"I'm definitely coming back, even if they don't," Elena joked as she eyed the food hungrily. Everybody laughed as they took a seat at the table.

"You're more than welcome dear, it has been a pleasure to meet you. I can really see why Damon and Stefan are always going on about you."

Elena blushed as Stefan grinned as he leaned over to hug her, "What can I say 'Lena, you're one of the bestest friends I've had in a long time. You really helped us out.

"Well knowing you all doesn't really suck either."

After they finished their meal Elena and Mary both offered to do the washing up whilst John proposed a walk with Damon. Elena looked up and threw him a small smile before he disappeared out of the room.

"So Grandpa, whats with the need to take me on a long and tedious walk? This isn't an intervention is it?" Damon asked sarcastically as the two set foot outside of the house.

John rolled his eyes but smiled as he patted Damon on the back, "No son, quite the opposite of an intervention. But please, be grateful that you're about to have this talk with me rather than your grandmother."

Damon frowned and became rather serious, "What talk?"

"Are you in love with Elena?"

"Yes."

John raised an eyebrow, surprised that his grandson was so willing to be honest with him, "And she knows?"

Damon nodded, "Yes. And she feels the same way."

"Then why haven't you told us yet?"

"Because I don't want to mess this up," Damon shrugged, "I'm not the good guy that Stefan is. I've never been in a serious relationship like this, hell I've never been in love like this. I don't know the right things to say to her or the right ways to act. All I know is I don't want to lose her, I can't."

"Somehow Damon, I don't think any of that matters. If you could only see the way she looks at you you'd realise it too. She clearly loves you just as much as you love her. Don't hold back from her, then you will really lose her."

"Now you're getting all sappy on me," Damon teased.

John grinned, "You know before I met your grandmother I never believed in love. Never thought I would ever find anyone that could love me like that and honestly I never wanted to find someone like that. And then I met her and everything changed. She was the first woman to reject me, she challenged me, she fought me and ultimately she made me a better man. She still does today."

Damon stood there for a while, taking in what his grandfather had told him, "Why are you telling all of me this now?"

"Because Damon," John paused before he fished for something in his coat pocket, he pulled out a velvet box, "I wanted to give you this. It was your grandmother's but she can't wear it anymore because her arthritis is getting worse. We both wanted you to have it in hopes that one day you'd meet a girl that you wanted to give it to. You don't have to propose to her or promise her anything. Just give it to her when the time is right. You'll know when."

"Wait, grandma knew about this too?"

John grinned, "Who do you think put me up to this?"

Damon laughed, "Okay this whole thing reeks of grandma. Are you going to tell her about this?"

"Not if you don't want me to."

Damon shook his head, "I'll tell her before I go, I want her to know."

"So Elena, I'm really glad you've enjoyed your stay down here," Linda commented as she and Elena walked into the lounge area together. Elena smiled as she took a seat.

"No, thank you for having me. I've had so much fun here honestly I don't want to go back home," Elena confessed a little disheartened.

Linda leant forward and rubbed Elena's arm, "Why? Is something wrong at home?"

Elena shook her head, "No, but the moment I get home is the moment everything goes back to normal. We have to face reality.."

"We?" I should not have said that.. Do I tell her?

Elena blushed, "Well.." She paused, "Two days ago well uh Damon and I finally confessed our feelings towards one another and we're together. But we made an agreement not to go public with our relationship until we're both ready." Why do I never think before I say anything?

"Whats holding you back?"

"Honestly? I'm scared to lose him, what if as soon as we go back he gets bored of me or suddenly I'm not enough for him? I'm hardly anything special."

"Oh sweetie, how could you possibly think that? You have done so much for Damon and for this family, more than you could even realise. I know Damon can be impossible to deal with at times but he means well, he really does and you've brought out this side of him that I haven't seen in years; he's happy." Well a grandmother does always know best.

Elena smiled, "Did you know that we were together?"

"I had my suspicions," Linda answered grinning widely.

"How-"

Linda laughed, "Oh please how could I not tell? The way you two look at each other, how you act around each other. Its the way John and I used to be, I guess the way we still are."

"Thank you for this Linda, I needed to hear this," Elena replied as she heard Damon and John at the door.

"Can I just ask you one more question?" Linda asked, causing Elena to nod. "Are you in love with Damon?"

Elena didn't even need to think about her next answer, "More than humanely possible." With that she shot Linda one last smile and stood up as Mary, Stefan, Damon and John all made their way into the room so everyone could say their goodbyes.

After the long and tedious journey home Elena said departed with the three Salvatores as she promised Stefan to give him a ride to school tomorrow and told Mary and Damon she would see them soon although Elena and Damon both knew they would be seeing each other sooner rather than later.

As she knocked on her front door Jenna opened it excitedly, enveloping Elena into a large bear hug, "Oh I missed you so much!" I'll just let her crush me, being with Linda and John showed me just how important my family are. I should cherish these moments.

Elena smiled as she hugged her aunt back, grinning widely as she saw Ric and Jeremy stood behind her, "I missed you too Jenna."

"Its good to have you back 'Lena," Jeremy agreed as he put an arm around his sister as soon as Jenna pulled away.

"Did I miss anything good?"

Jenna pulled a face, "Your mom rang and then asked why you weren't here before she lectured me about letting you go away with 'strangers'. That was fun, but apart from that nothing special." Well that never sounds good.

"We don't have to go back do we?" Elena asked worriedly as she looked up at Jeremy.

"No. Like I would let you kids go without putting up a fight! You're never escaping," Jenna teased.

The family soon settled down in front of the TV for a traditional movie night until Elena excused herself to go and unpack. Once she got to her room she pulled out her phone and texted Caroline and Bonnie to let them know she was back safely. Afterwards she quickly dialled Damon's number and smiled when he picked up immediately.

"Were you just sat by the phone waiting for me to call?" Elena joked smirking to herself.

Damon laughed before turning a little serious, "No but I was just about to call you. I have to go out of town for a couple of days and sort some business out with my father." Well that just put an end to my insanely good mood.

"When are you going?"

"Tomorrow," Damon answered sighing.

"Can I come with you?" Elena asked weakly, Damon chuckled.

"Haven't you got school tomorrow?" Right. Hell starts again.

"I'd rather be with you."

Damon smiled, "Me too, me too."

"So will I get to see you before you go?"

"My flight leaves at 8 tomorrow morning so I'll be out of here by 6." I sound so desperate, Elena chill.

"I'm guessing thats a no then," Elena sighed but Damon spoke up, "Leave your window open, I'll be up in half an hour."

Elena put the phone on her dresser as she opened up the window before returning to her cell, "I'm gonna take a shower, I'll see you soon."

"Do you have to go tomorrow?" Elena asked as she snuggled into Damon's warm chest. How am I meant to sleep these next few nights without him?

Damon nodded, "Yes unfortunately I do. But I'll be back before you know it."

"Call me when you land?" Elena asked letting out a wide yawn.

"Of course. Now get some sleep, I promise I'll see you as soon as I get back."

"Okay Damon," Elena agreed as her eyes drifted shut, she whispered a final "I love you," before falling into a deep sleep.
