Zelda

Tuesday, 10 AM

"Are you free tonight?"

I did not expect that. So no one can blame me when all I do is blink at the inquirer with my mouth open, but no words come out.

"Ex-excuse me?" I sputter.

Dark's expression remains calm and collected as he repeats exactly what he said. "Are you free tonight?"

Of course I heard him the first time, but I need some extra seconds to fully process the words.

Free tonight? First, never mind my schedule, but what is Dark getting at? Immediately, I feel slightly uncomfortable.

"Sorry," I say, hoping my hesitation isn't obvious. "Um...actually…"

My mind swam for any plausible excuse that would work under his calculating gaze. Should I make up an elaborate excuse? Flat out tell him that I'm not comfortable with that question? But that's when I remember.

"Oh, sorry! I'm not free tonight. I've got play practice after school today, haha, since you know, I'm in the play and everything…" I've been cursing out the play and play practice ever since the audition, but never have I felt so relieved having play practice scheduled tonight.

"Oh, the play." Dark finally casts his gaze elsewhere, looking down at the lab sheet. "Well, another time, then?"

I swallow. "Uh...maybe…?" I squeak. Get yourself together, Zelda! He may be slightly questionable, but tell him already if you have no plans to escalate with him!

I open my mouth to finally speak my thoughts, but he's just so daunting. I just don't want him to dislike me or anything. I dislike being disliked by anyone, if you catch my drift. Yet, I don't want him to misunderstand.

"Actually, uh," I begin, my voice quaking. "I appreciate your offer, but I don't think we know each other too well. I'm a little...uncomfortable. But I'm willing to get to know you better and be friends instead..."

"Hm," he says in return, which surprises me somewhat since I expected a more...reactive reaction. But the next question he throws catches me by the throat.

"Is it because you're pursuing someone else?"

I almost choke. "Oh—uh, what? Um...that's...uh…" This guy really is straightforward. Frighteningly so.

"...Maybe?" is what my lame answer eventually becomes.

To my surprise, Dark grins. "Cool," he says simply but switches back to a previous topic that I thought we were finally avoiding. "But I do wish to know you better. After all, we have some things in common," he says.

"Like?"

"Science."

"...That's it?"

"Link."

I do a double-take. "You know Link?" Then again, I do remember Link's reaction when I mentioned Dark during our first play practice. I had a suspicion, but now it really seems as if they know each other in some way.

Dark grins another one of his grins like someone who was winning a game, and he's about to say something before a third voice interrupts our exchange.

"There's one table that still hasn't gathered supplies!" comes our science teacher's mighty rhinoceros roar. Flinching, I mutter a "Be right back" to Dark before scrambling to the storing cabinets where all the other tables' supplies were taken save for mine and Dark's. Lugging out all these, I quickly make my way back to the table where Dark is setting up everything else, clearing the table and propping up several empty beakers.

As we set up, curiosity still swimming in my mind, I reiterate, "You know Link?"

"I do."

"Really? How? When? Where?"

"You seem to be taking a lot more interest in me after I mentioned Link."

I freeze. Flustered, and most likely beet red, I slowly turn to look at Dark. His grin is unrelenting, and I have a feeling what he's going to say next.

"Is he the one you're seeking?" he asks.

I gulp and turn back to the experiment. Are we on step four or five? "Uh...I don't...think I need to tell you that…"

He shrugs nonchalantly, and again, I'm surprised he seems so accepting of all the shutting down I do. "If you say so," he says simply, which still doesn't answer my question(s) on how he knows Link.

It's quiet for a moment as we fiddle around with the equipment, lighting up the Bunsen burner and holding a small sheet of paper soaked in water over it with tongs. Apparently the experiment is supposed to explore that the wet paper won't catch on fire when held over the burner, but if it is soaked in ethanol, it will. For the grand finale, if the paper is soaked in an ethanol-water mixture, only the ethanol is burned away but the paper won't burn. I think Science Teacher explained why, but again, I neither admit nor deny that I may or may not have been listening.

I'm holding the sheet of paper over the flame, and although our conversation seems to have ended, I can't help it. "But...how do you know Link?"

Dark's expression doesn't change. "Coworker."

Coworker? "You mean, you work at the cafe with him?"

"Yes."

Ah, so that's their relationship. "That's interesting to know."

"Is it?"

"Yeah, I guess."

The experiment quickly finishes, and we're answering post-lab questions (or at least I'm trying my best with it) before the teacher's voice shatters my inner peace once more, announcing for all materials to be returned and tables cleaned. Dark takes back the supplies this time while I wipe down the table and eradicate all traces of burnt paper chips. Medli and Tetra bound by, inquiring how everything went (while making purposeful glances towards Dark), but I assure them that the experiment went smoothly with little to no hiccups, and that no, I did not manage to blow up anything this time. "Shame," is what Medli jokingly says.

We compare lab answers briefly (permitted by our teacher, don't worry), and before I know it, we're all packing up. Dark stops by the table to pick up his lab sheet as I'm packing up my stuff and am about to head out.

"Well, bye, see you tomorrow," I say benignly.

"Bye. Have fun at play practice."

Uggh...I'm so tired. But here I am at play practice after school again. I remember yesterday how utterly frightened I was, but now, it feels too familiar. And it's only the second day.

"Zeellllda!" Midna coos, waving me over. "Wanna practice our scenes together? I really don't have many interactions besides with you, Link, and a dude called Zant. But I don't know him too well, and Link isn't here yet, so that just leaves me and you! Perfect, am I right?"

I force a sheepish smile. "Sure, Midna. Let's go."

We find a secluded spot at the side of the room, and I take our traveling time to scan the area, looking for Link. Usually Ruto and Malon would come with me to play practice, but Malon had to stay a few minutes later to talk to her teacher about a test, and Ruto was going to come a whole thirty minutes late since she has pick-little-brother-up-from-school-and-drop-off-at-home duty today (she and her mom switch every week).

But after looking around for a while, I fail to locate him, so I let Midna drag me off to practice. I wonder where he is, and I realize that the reason I want to talk to him is, number one, I'm still uncertain about my exchange with Dark and I remember Link seemed to know about him, and number two, do I need a reason to talk with Link?

"This spot is good. Wanna get started?"

I turn at Midna's words and quickly slap on an optimistic smile. "Okay, let's do it."

"Great. Let's get some adequate practice time before your other friends arrive." I don't miss the eye roll, probably referring to Malon.

"Why do you dislike Malon so much?" I blurt out of the blue.

Midna freezes, most likely not expecting me to ask that, but I wasn't expecting me to ask that either.

"Um…," Midna starts. "...She's just so annoying."

"But how?"

"I just don't like her style, I guess. We're just on different wavelengths."

"Hey, I think you guys are both awesome. What's stopping you from being friends?"

Midna crosses her arms. "I mean, I don't actively reject that idea. She didn't do anything hugely offensive to me, but I'm not going to be the one who tries to make amends first. She'll have to suck up to me first."

Ah, so it's more of a pride thing. I almost want to laugh at their childishness. "Ah Midna, don't worry about it! None of you are in the wrong, and we just need one of you guys to break the ice between you two."

"Like I said, I won't be doing it."

"You know, that's pretty immature, Midna."

"And what do you mean by that? I thought you were on my side."

"I am! I'm on both you guys' sides. Actually, there's no sides—we're all on the same side, you, me, Malon. And Ruto and Link and his friends. So let's be mature and be willing to patch things up with Malon like mature people, yes?"

Midna sighs, defeated. "If it makes me more mature than her to be the first to make amends—"

"No, don't use comparisons. You guys are both awesome, cool girls."

"—fine. I guess I can try that out. But only if she's not going to stomp on me and reject my…'apology.'"

"I assure you, she won't. I know Malon's not like that. I'll talk to her too."

"I hope."

It isn't long before Midna and I finally get rolling with our lines. As per usual, I try to keep immersed and in character while Midna infuses her own personality and spunk into her character lines. It seems as if the Twilight Princess contrasts immensely with the Princess of Hyrule, though it doesn't seem as if the Twilight Princess knows she's the Twilight Princess but instead pins the Princess of Hyrule as the Twilight Princess and have I mentioned the word 'princess' enough? All this history is starting to make my brain hurt, and who knows how many inaccurate or erroneous assumptions were made? Nevertheless, history is an interesting thing. People are amazing to make a whole school play off of these centuries.

"Heyyy, Zelda, you're boyfriend's here!"

Midna's coo breaks me out of our practicing mindset as I follow her gaze to where Link was exchanging words with a guy with a bright red pompadour I occasionally see strutting the halls. I don't know when Link arrived, but am I glad to see him now.

"Oh, I know that hungry look," Midna cackles, catching my attention.

"What?" I force, trying to seem nonchalant, although I know Midna isn't tricked.

She nudges me, giving me a push into his direction. "Don't let me keep you waiting. By the look of your starstruck gaze, you'd much rather spend time with him than me, am I right?"

"I wasn't staring starstruck at him!"

"Surrre."

I'm about to retaliate but the sound of my name stops me from embarrassing myself any more in front of Midna.

"...but don't we need Zelda too? It has her included in this scene too," I hear Link from afar.

"Really?" the red pompadour guy says. "Hm, well we've got a problem then—"

"I'm here!" Before I know it, I've stampeded up to them after spitting out a farewell to Midna, leaving quickly enough not to see (and not really wanting to confirm it) her smirk after me.

"Great! Let's get this show on the road!" Pompadour Guy exclaims, peering at his script.

Link nudges me. "You good? You don't seem very bright. Tired?"

Oh shoot. Now I remember the reason why I want to see him so much (other than the reason that I always want to see him). Dark's exchange with me and his unexpected request floats back, and I resist a shiver.

"Yeah, a little. Just that…" I stop, leaning in to make sure only he can hear and judge for himself. "...you know who Dark is, do you?"

As I expected, Link stiffens, and I take it that he knows him. Link reacted the same way when I mentioned Dark the first time we were at play practice.

I continue talking, saying that I still don't know the two's relationship (other than being coworkers), but reminding Link that Dark is indeed my science classmate. Oh goddesses. Here comes the hard part.

"Um...well, he asked me for a, uh, night out," I blurt.

Link's eyes immediately shoot wide open, and I barrel on before he can overreact. "But I said I couldn't-it was tonight, but I told him I had play practice. Plus I said I don't know him too well…"

I really hope my explanation appeased him some. He seems to relax a little and is about to say something, but our conversation is interrupted as Pompadour Guy exclaims, "What are you guys still yakking about? I'm ready, are you?"

Flustered, I quickly spit out a reply that yes, we're ready, embarrassed and ashamed that we were having our own private conversation when we should be focusing on play practice, since this is what we're here for.

"Great." Pompadour Guy clears his throat and exchanges glances at both of us, confirming we're ready to start.

He begins by jabbing a finger towards Link before reciting his lines. "What's your problem, anyway? Oh, wait...I got it. You're here to talk about today's race. I can see it in those dopey eyes of yours. They're pleading, 'Oh, Groose, can you please find it in your heart to let me win today? Please!'"

Ah, so his name is Groose. I remember Ms. Anju to keep our names the same in the play. Also, can I just say how slightly amused I am to know that Groose's character is a big bully to Link? And what's better—I'm his savior.

Groose continues his act, and he plays the big mean guy well. In fact, I think some of his feelings are somewhat genuine towards Link, which makes me chuckle, since they're exchanging challenging expressions and eye rolls, and it makes me wonder what sort of beef they have with each other.

"You're just desperate to win so you can get some alone time with Zelda up on the Statue of the Goddess at the end of the ceremony," Groose continues acting. "Well, sorry, pal. Groose doesn't do charity for wimps. My advice? Work hard and wish with all your heart. You might even come in second."

Impressive, I gotta say. Though I'm sure Link and his rivalry of sorts helped him act.

Groose pauses to read ahead on his script. "...Say, come to think of it, how come I don't see your bird? Where is that scruffy pile of red feathers? I can't imagine what could've happened to him. Do you think his tiny brain got confused by all the clouds and got lost?"

"Nice hair," Link comments unexpectedly.

Groose gasps, seemingly shocked Link said that too, making me wonder if they were suddenly doing improv acting.

"You lay off my 'do right now, or I'll flatten you. Everyone knows I've got the slickest pompadour in town," Groose spits. "Would you wake up, straighten up, and grow a backbone already? Dopes like you are dragging our honored academy through the mud."

I'm too entertained by his and Link's exchange that I don't notice the dragging silence until Groose sends me a sideways glance as if saying, Your turn.

Oh.

I fumble my script up to my eyes, immediately locating where we are. "And just who might you be talking about, Groose?" I assert, putting as much authority behind my voice I can muster. Ahhh I'm Link's savior. This feels awesome.

"Oh...Zelda. Hey. Nah, it's...uh…" Groose stammers.

"Don't even try it, Groose! You're picking on Link again, aren't you? He's a student at the academy, like all of us. Why do you insist on bullying him around so much?" I'm getting into the role as I continue reciting my lines, elated that I get to play the protector of Link. I cast a glance at him, and my act almost crumbles as I see him staring with a faint smile on his mouth.

"Pfft! Forget it," Groose barks. "Ok, we're outta here, boys. Later, Link! Hope you find your bird, or else you're gonna have to sit out today's race! That could be a major setback toward knighthood, so find that bird or get real used to the taste of failure! It's your special flavor."

Link seems to almost burst out laughing at the last couple lines, and I guess this is where we'll stop. "And cut!" I announce, but I realize neither of them are paying attention to me.

"What were your last two lines?" Link giggles. "'Get real used to the taste of failure'? My 'own special flavor'? I think that's you, Groose—you still haven't beat me at a single serious game yet."

Groose harrumphs. "Don't get too cocky, I'm still a guy in training. One day I'll come out on top and wipe that smile off your face!"

I clear my throat loudly, catching both their attentions. Immediately, Link looks mortified while Groose looks slightly guilty.

"Sorry about that, Link and I have a score to settle," Groose says apologetically, but he soon tosses me an approving smile. "But Zelda, your acting was really good. I think you defended this skinny boy really well. It's like you really like him or something."

My face switches on high heat as Link immediately begins whacking Groose and muttering several "Shut up"s.

"I'm just teasing, but it really did look like it..." Groose snickers, amused grin stamped on his face as he dodges Link's swings. After that little fiasco, we all manage to calm down before Groose is fanning himself with the script and saying, "Well, I think we did quite good. Wanna practice later?"

"Please," Link grunts. "I need a break away from you."

Groose snorts before delivering a large back slap to Link. "Ha. You'll be seeing more of me in the future, don't worry. But for now, ta-ta! I need to hunt down Cawlin and Strich now since those lazy bums could use some practicing too."

Groose waves at us, and we wave back, though mine seems to wave farewell while Link's seems to be waving him off.

"So, you guys have something going on?" I inquire, amused.

Link rolls his eyes. "Not really. Just that he thinks he's better than me at any sport or game, but I manage to beat him all the time anyway. Although he's annoying, he's persistent, and it's kind of admirable actually." He blinks. "Of course, I won't openly admit that to him or anything."

I laugh. "Alright, if you insist."

Suddenly, Link turns to me abruptly, a new look of apprehension taking over. "Wait, so what was the deal with Dark? He asked you for a night out tonight?"

I pause for a moment, registering the change in topic before I nod once. "Yeah, but I told him I had play practice tonight so I couldn't make it."

"Did he propose another night?"

"Well...he did ask for another time, but I finally told him I didn't know him too well and everything."

Link relaxes slightly. "I see…" He looks relieved. "So you don't like him that way or anything?"

"No!" I blurt, flustered before composing myself. "I...don't know him too well again, and even still, I don't feel anything for him."

Suddenly, it gets hard to look at Link. How did we tread into the topic of liking someone? Wait, is this the sign the goddesses gave me to officially confess?

SHUT UP, BRAIN, I scold myself, eyes beginning to swim. At the corner of my eye, I just catch Link with a small grin, but his expression still looks somewhat perplexed and distracted.

Get yourself together, Zelda, I tell myself before I do anything stupid. No, this is too much. I chicken out. "Still wanna practice?" I say, forcing myself to look at him. It sounds a little abrupt, but it's a lot better than an accidental confession. I mean, I'm not against confessing, but the atmosphere and location and time isn't right for it. When the time comes, it has to be perfect.

Link seems to shake out of his thoughts. "Sure, we definitely can. It was great last time. I just hope my friends won't interrupt…"

"Where are they?"

"They're practicing with other students for the time being. All the practicing I've done so far is just that scene with you and Groose. And you?"

"Well, Malon and Ruto still haven't arrived yet, and I just practiced briefly with Midna. Then I practiced a bit with you and Groose."

Link smiles. "Well, I'm all for practicing more with you. Where do you want to go?"

"Just here is fine."

Ba-dump, ba-dump, goes my heart.

Yaaaawwwwwnn.

"Long day?"

I quickly shut my astronomically sized mouth at Saria's words before peering sheepishly at her as she whizzed by. "Heh, kind of," I say, mortified.

Saria simply grins at me warmly. "Sorry to hear that. Is having you work here after school making it worse?"

"No, of course not! I don't mind working here at all. It's fine, I plan to go to bed early today anyway."

Saria smiles apologetically at me. "You're a trooper, Zelda. Good luck!"

"Thanks, Saria. You're a harder worker than me!"

We exchange comforting grins before Saria turns back to her work, which is unboxing and sorting new sets of music books. I scan the store, giving my mind a brief refresher on where everything is. Although I haven't worked at the music shop for long, I'm starting to get used to the layout and where certain items are. Or at least where the general area of an item is.

The day has been relatively slow, so slow and uneventful that I find myself occasionally wishing for Link's musical friend, Mikau, to come so that I'd be able to do something. Yes, I still retch at the thought of seeing classmates where I work, but Mikau knows that already. So does Link.

My brain finally realizes that the reason why I want Mikau to come is that if he comes, then Link might come too. Ugh, all my thoughts always trace right back to him. I'm hopeless.

"Drifting off again, I see?"

Cia's grating voice shakes me out of my reverie as she strolls by, cradling a bunch of polish and sandpaper still in its packaging.

I make a face. "There's so much I can do at the cash register," I retort.

Cia scoffs, dumping her pile of stuff on the counter in front of me. "Since you're so busy, why don't you sort these? Polish on one side, sandpaper on the other. Within the groups, sort by brand, and then look through the price book and label the prices accordingly. Surely you can do that, can you?"

I resist rolling my eyes and instead smile understandingly. "Of course, I can do that."

Cia grumbles and begins to turn around, but then stops and faces me once again. I'm already picking through the pile, pushing polish on the left and sandpaper on the right.

"...Say," Cia begins.

I raise an eyebrow.

"...who was that boy who came to visit you last time?"

When I shoot her an accusing glare, she throws out, "Only because he was a customer doing your job. I'm your supervisor, so I need to know."

"Just a friend from school."

"Just a friend?"

"Yes."

"Why was he doing your job when you were supposed to?"

"I didn't want him to, but he did. I apologize, it won't happen again."

"And how would you make sure of that?"

"I'll tell him to never come here."

It's all a bluff, since truthfully, I do want to see Link as often as I can. But if my suspicions are correct and if I played my cards right…

"No, I'm not asking for that!" Cia blurts, which confirms my suspicions. My eyes narrow slightly. Seems like this girl has a thing for Link.

"...Why not?" I challenge, pretending to really be innocently oblivious why.

"You...you can't tell a customer to never come to our store. We need to welcome them all," Cia comes up. Her faltered expression regains sharpness as she glowers at me. "Never mind all that now. Focus on your job."

"Okay."

Cia leaves with a huff, and I resume sorting the polish and sandpaper, grumbling under my breath. It doesn't take long though, and before I know it, I've sorted them and priced them all. I manage to track down Cia once again, and I inform her I have completed the task. "Good" is all she says and deserts me to stock them.

"Oh yeah," Cia pipes up. She gestures with her head to a new stack of boxes that near the door. "Those are new arrivals. If you could, unbox these too and stack them either today or tomorrow."

I salute half-heartedly. "Got it." Goddesses, those boxes look big and heavy. Cia probably knew that.

Cia twists on her heel and leaves, and I head up to the boxes with scissors, running it down the tape. Opening the flaps, I see they're stacks of new music CDs. They look interesting, but I groan at the sheer amount. Maybe I should stock these tomorrow when I have more motivation.

So I push the boxes to the side, reminding myself to deal with these tomorrow. Releasing a huge bottled up sigh, I trudge back to the register before heading into the backroom, going on my fifteen minute break. I dig in my bag and pull out a crushed granola bar as well as my cell. Sitting down at a small table and unemotionally chewing on the granola bar, my cell suddenly begins vibrating, and I see the caller ID to be Malon.

I pick up. "Hey Malon, perfect timing, I'm on my break right now—"

"Oh hi Zelda," comes a voice not Malon's. I nearly choke on a dried raisin when I realize it's Midna's voice.

"Midna, why are you on Malon's phone?"

"Oh we decided to call you," I faintly hear Malon's voice from within the phone. It seems like both Midna and Malon are in the same room for some reason, but they both sound very forced and uncomfortable. I swallow, disposing my empty granola wrapper in a nearby trash.

"...Yeeeesss? Whhhyyy?" I draw out, baffled.

"Well, uh, we need to tell you something," Malon says. There's a long pause, and that's when I catch an even more distant voice in the background.

"Go on, tell her the exciting news," I hear Ruto murmur, making me nearly fall out my chair. Ruto was in the room with them too, and it seems as if she was the one who coerced the other two to call me. I'm a little confused, but then a thought dawned on me, causing me to smile. No way, they didn't…

"We...we…," Midna begins stammering.

"We...made up!" Malon announces. Score! I knew it.

"That's awesome!" I cheer, perhaps a bit too loudly when Saria pokes her head in to make sure I'm okay. Giving her an apologetic glance, I turn my attention back to my phone, grinning ear to ear. "That's soooo awesome. So you guys are friends now, right? No more bickering between you two? Finally grew up?"

Midna groans audibly through my cell speakers as I'm sure Malon has her head in her hands, hiding how embarrassed she is. I'm giggling to myself before there's sounds of shuffling, and before I know it, Ruto seems to have the phone in her possession as her voice rings through.

"Yes, isn't it great, Zelda? Being the good person I am, I invited both of them to the park saying I had something to tell them, but ended up forcing them to make up, because we're all sick and tired of their arguing, right?"

I roll my eyes again. "You can say that again. But how did you do it?"

"Welllll, I first let them vent why the dislike the other person so much while making sure the other person vows to not claw the other's head off as they're doing it. After they let it all out, I ask them if their thoughts still apply for some reason or if it can be easily resolved. Which it is."

I laugh. Oh Ruto, always the problem-solver. "And then? They're friends now?"

"Well it's still a little rocky, but they managed to find some common interests and a middle ground. Hopefully they'll be able to hang out more comfortably, yeah?"

"Yep. So that's why you made them call me to tell me the oh so great news?"

"Of course. This is too good news to pass up."

I giggle and hear the phone get passed again.

"Yeah, so Midna and I are best friends now," Malon says, somewhat forced while I barely hear Midna groan in mortification.

"You know, that's awesome," I say sincerely. "Just know that I don't like either of you any less than the other. I love you guys equally and sooo much, you know that?"

"Yeah," Midna grumbles, and it's funny because her words sound so unsmiling.

"Love you too, Zel," Malon drawls with no spirit.

I clap my hands together, even though they likely can't hear it. "Great! So, wanna go hang out as a large group sometime then?"

"Sure!" Ruto butts in from the background. "How about we spend a day at the cafe where your eye candy is?"

My face heats up as my mouth struggles to make coherent words, realizing that she's referring to the cafe where Link works. "What...what no! Remember the last time we went? It was a total flop!" I sputter.

"Sure, you just don't want us coming to you guys' special place, am I right?"

"Oh shut up, it's not 'our' special place, I just don't want to embarrass myself in front of him again."

"Oh come on, Zelda, what makes you think you'll embarrass yourself? You've been around him and around us for a long time. What's wrong with hanging out together in a huge group of friends and just having a good time? It'll just be like last night at your house when we were all there, but it'll be much more comfortable and less intrusive if it's at the cafe, yes?"

"But he has to work, and there's other customers too!"

"Why're you making it so difficult to see Link? I thought you want to anytime you can."

I blink at Midna's words through the phone. Yeah, why am I so against the idea of going to visit him? I guess...I'm still really shy around him.

I slam a determined fist against the table I'm sitting at. If I want us to move forward, I can't stop backing out. I really like him.

"Okay, when do you guys wanna go?"

A/N: Aw, our Zellie's in love~ ^^
