Kid's POV
It's been a week since we first got here. Things haven't been going well. First off, things between Liz, Patty and I have been a bit… tense. Who am I kidding? Patty hasn't spoken to me since she saw Maka on the surgery table. Just two days ago she threw a crumpled up piece of paper at me. At first, I thought she was playing. Then I unfolded it and read it. On it, the words "It's your fault!" were written. And things with Liz aren't any better. She barely looks at me and she's also stopped talking to me.
They are acting to obnoxious! I already apologized for what I did. I know that I made a huge mistake when I entered the fight without their consent. I know that they were injured because of it. But I have worse injuries! And look at Maka! She's been in and out of surgery this whole time! And if she's not on the surgery table, she's in a room, a heavily guarded room, doing nothing! And you know why? Because she's in a coma!
And Soul, who was brought here with the rest of us a couple days ago, Yuki, Danny and Tsubaki haven't done anything but sulk this whole time! Soul only thinks of Maka. Yuki hasn't eaten or slept much because his meister, Ryan, is too injured to leave the ICU. Tsubaki hasn't stopped crying because, even though Black Star is recovering, and might I add, in way better conditions than Maka, he has to stay in the ICU to finish recovering. She couldn't even stay happy for a second when they said he was out of his coma. She immediately started crying after they said he couldn't see anyone for a while. I can understand why Danny is upset. I mean, his two weapons are still in bad condition. Just yesterday, they were let out of the ICU and back with us. But, despite that, both Sam and Brian are still in pretty bad condition.
I could never go through what Danny's going through. Normally, when a weapon is injured, the meister has to wait anxiously to see if their weapon will live or if they'll have to find a new weapon. And he has to do the same. He has to go through the same anxiety and the same worry. But he has to for two weapons.
That's when I realized something. I have been so selfish. I've been thinking my weapons are being stupid for acting like they are. But they have every right to be acting that way. I've been thinking of my injuries. I've been thinking about everyone else's injuries. But I haven't been thinking of my weapons' injuries. The ones that are both mental and physical.
In that instance, I got up and out of bed. I walked past the sulking figures of Soul, Tsubaki, Yuki and Danny, and the sleeping figures of Sam and Brian. I walked to the garden that was in the back of the hospital. Liz and Patty have been going there. I'm sure it's mostly to be away from me.
"Liz, Patty, I have something to say to the both of you," I said once I was behind them.
They both didn't look back at me. They just continued to silently make necklaces out of flowers.
"Ok, I know both of you are upset-"
"Furious," Liz corrected.
"Pissed," Patty then added.
I sighed. "As I was saying, I know both of you are very, very angry at me. I thought both of you were being obnoxious and, well, somewhat stupid. I thought you two were mad at me because you were injured. Then I realized something. I was the one being stupid and obnoxious." When I said this, they both stopped what they were doing for a second. "I realized that I was only thinking of my injuries and what I went through. I was only thinking about how Maka and Black Star were in worse shape than you two. And now I've snapped out of it. I realized you two went through a lot, just like the others."
I stopped talking and let my words sink in. Then, suddenly, Liz looked back at me. She got up and hugged me. Then Patty did, too. I hugged them back.
"Does this mean I'm forgiven?" I asked.
"Yeah, I guess it does," Liz said.
Patty just nodded.
I sighed in relief. "Thank goodness!" After a bit longer I added, "Let's go back. We need to rest."
"All right," Liz said. "Could we finish these first?"
"Sure," I replied. "But don't take too long."
They nodded.
I left and went back to the room. I was walking to my bed when I noticed a piece of paper sticking out from under Patty's pillow. I hope it's not Maka's chart. Patty's been reading it over and over again ever since she saw Maka. I've been trying to stop her, but it was impossible. It's not healthy for her to continue reading that. I-
This isn't Maka's chart, I realized when I began to read it.
Dear Kid,
We been thinkin have been thinking a lot since we got here, and Patty and I have decided to stop being you're your weapons. Things haven't been going good well between the three of us. And we also deseyeded decided we're gonna stop being weapons completely. We've seen that this is just too much for us. We feel ungratefull ungrateful for leaving; you've given us a lot. But the shit that just happened current events showed us we're just not cut out to be weapons. We don't want to see our friend getting hurt. We don't want to see you get hurt. We know that, even if we do leave, you'll probably still get hurt. It's just easier for us to not know. Were We're sorry, Kid. We'll find a way to pay you back for all the things you've given and bought us. And for all the things Patty's broken, don't worry.
Again, we're sorry,
Liz and Patty
Patty and Liz
I suddenly remembered something from yesterday. Liz and Patty were up really late. I remember hearing them saying things regarding grammar and how to spell.
Just then, Liz and Patty walked in.
"Hey, Kid, what are you reading?" Liz asked.
I didn't respond.
"Hey, Kiddo-kun," Patty said. "Is something wrong?"
"'We don't want to see you get hurt'?!" I spat out, getting the attention of everyone else that was in the room.
"Huh? What are you-" Liz started.
"'We know that, even if we do leave, you'll probably still get hurt. It's just easier for us to not know'?!"
I heard Liz gasp. She quickly walked over to me and attempted to rip the note out of my hand.
"Don't bother!" I spat. "I already read it! Every last word!"
"Kid, we weren't gonna do it! I mean, we were. But, we're not, not anymore! That note doesn't mean anything!"
"Oh, yes, it does! You two, you were going to leave! You were just going to abandon me, your meister?!"
"Kid, we were mad, but-" Patty began.
"No! No, just shut up!" They looked at me, shocked. "I took both of you off the streets! I gave you a home, a mansion no less! I let both of you eat and have practically everything you've wanted! I made both of you one of the greatest weapons there has ever been! And, just because you were 'mad,' you want to leave now?!"
"Kid, let us explain!"
"No, Liz! This," I spat, lifting up the note, "has no explanation. I understand, both of you were mad. I was being unfair! I know this! But this is just unforgivable!"
"We were gonna pay you back for everything," Patty stated.
"It's not about the money, Patty! I gave both of you so much. At first, it was so I could become one of the most powerful meisters in the world! Then, I thought we had formed a bond! I felt like both of you were sisters to me. I thought we were past thinking 'I owe you, you owe me'! I guess I was wrong."
"Kid, it's not like that! We just didn't like fighting against our friends! We didn't like having to practically kill them, just so you could prove that you're stronger!" Liz said, her anger getting to her. "We didn't like seeing you get hurt!"
"'Didn't like seeing me get hurt'? Didn't like seeing me get hurt?! Maybe if you two were better weapons, I wouldn't have gotten hurt!"
They gasped. Patty looked like she was about to cry. But Liz, Liz looked like she was about to rip him to shreds.
"'Better weapons'?! You think-"
"And now," he continued, not caring that Liz was speaking, "you two want to leave me! You two want to leave me, and without a weapon! That would leave me vulnerable and easy prey for the enemy! I'd get hurt even worse! So don't you dare say you two don't want to see me get hurt!"
"Um, Kid," Tsubaki suddenly said, her voice raspy from crying so much. "Don't you think you're being too harsh on them?"
"Why don't you just shut up?! You should be the one getting yelled at! All the non-stop crying and complaining, it is all annoying! You've kept us all up! I can't go to sleep without shoving earplugs in my ears! I used to think you were such a strong individual. Now I've seen you're just pathetic!"
"Kid," Danny said, shocked.
"Don't act like you're not annoyed! She's crying non-stop because her meister is in the ICU! At least he's awake! At least he's going to live! No one even knows whether or not Maka will live or die! Or even wake up," I added.
"Kid, don't talk like that!" Soul exclaimed.
"Look at Soul, Tsubaki! Look at him! His meister is in a coma! She's been in and out of surgery ever since we got here! He's been hopeful this whole time! And you're here crying! Why can't you just be satisfied with you meister being alive, awake?! Soul hasn't complained or shed a tear ever since we got here! That's all you've ever done!"
She burst into tears. She began mumbling "Black Star, Black Star!" between sobs.
"Go ahead and cry! That's all you're really good at, Tsubaki! I won't be a pushover towards you, like Black Star!" I said.
She gasped. Her annoying sobs stopped. She looked at me, her eyes full of hate. "Don't you dare say anything bad towards Black Star! He's my meister and I will not stand for anyone insulting him!"
"What are you gonna do, Tsubaki?! Cry?!" Soul suddenly spat out.
She gasped. "Soul?"
"You know, Kid's right! Maka has been in a coma this whole time! I can't even see her! I can't see my own meister!"
"Neither can I!"
"No, Tsubaki. You can. You can go see him in the ICU as much as you want to! But that's not good enough for you! I can see Maka, but through a glass window! I can't talk to her, I can't touch her and I can barely feel our connection anymore!" Soul yelled, his voice breaking.
"Soul, don't be so harsh," Sam suddenly said, his voice showing how weak he was at the moment. "She's very close to Black Star-"
"And I'm not close to Maka?! There's a reason she's such an amazing meister! It's because of how close we are!"
"Soul, Sam's not saying you and Maka's bond isn't strong. He's just saying that Tsubaki is worried for her meister. Just like you're worried for Maka," Yuki explained.
"Shut up! What Tsubaki is supposedly going through is nothing compared to what I am! She has the reassurance of her meister living! She can go to sleep ever night with the thought of her meister being alive! My meister, she's practically dead. When I see her through that glass window, I can't see the Maka I used to see. The Maka that was brave, kind and stubborn! All I can see is a weak girl that's hooked up to a bunch of machines. A girl that has a bunch of needles in her arms and bandages covering her small, broken body," he said. This time, it was too much for him. He fell to his knees and cried, like a child.
"Why don't you yell at him, Kid," Liz spat. "He's crying over his meister, just like Tsubaki."
"This is different, Liz! Tsubaki has cried this whole time! This is the first time that words of hopelessness have left Soul's mouth. This is the first time that he's cried!"
"Kid, that is totally unfair!"
"Well, it's totally unfair that you and Patty want to leave!"
"That's different! We-"
"It is not different! I've-"
"Kid, just let it go. You've said what you-" Danny stared.
"You know what, Danny? Stay out of this. This is none of your concern-"
"Kid, please calm down," Sam said.
"Shut up!" Kid yelled.
"Kid, calm down-" Danny hopelessly tried again.
"I said this is none of your-"
"Well, it became my concern when you yelled at my weapon!"
"Danny, it's o-" Sam tried.
"No, it is not ok! Kid, you have to calm down! You're letting the stress from all this get to you. You-"
"I said to stay out of it!"
"Danny is right, Kid. Just-" Yuki tried.
"Yuki, I am not talking to you. I am talking to Daniel!"
"Oh, so it's 'Daniel' now?!" Daniel said, obviously offended.
"You're acting like Tsubaki!" Kid yelled. At this Tsubaki's sobs began again, this time ten times as loud and annoying.
"Will you be quiet, Tsubaki?!" Soul yelled, fixing him composure.
"Why don't you, Soul?" she said between sobs. "You're the one that was just crying!"
"You're the one that was crying for practically seven days straight!" Brian suddenly yelled. I was surprised to see how his anger made his weak state suddenly disappear.
"Brian?!" Sam and Daniel said, shocked at his sudden outburst.
Suddenly, everyone in the room started to yell, with the exception of Tsubaki who continued to whale her useless sobs.
Normal POV
The room was in chaos. Everyone had something to say, or in Tsubaki's case, cry.
On one side of the room, Patty and Liz were arguing.
"Sis, I think we made a mistake."
"Patty, what are you talking about?!"
"I mean, it was mean of us to want to leave. Kiddo-kun has done so much for us. And-"
"Wait, you're the one that was saying that it's his fault for Maka being all beat up! And now you're saying we're the ones that made the mistake?!"
"I said that because you said it! I thought you were right! I mean, you're my big sis. You're always right. But, I think you're wrong this time!"
"Oh, so this is my fault?!"
"I didn't say that! See what happens when I don't agree with you?! You get so emotional and mean! Why can't you just say that you were wrong this time?!"
"I am right! Kid was being so unfair and he was being such a jerk!"
"You mean, you thought he was being unfair. I mean, you're mad 'cuz we got hurt a bit. Maka would have forgiven him, whether she got into a coma or not. She's so nice."
"Oh, so you don't agree with me because of Maka?! I see! Why don't you leave me instead of Kid?! Go and make Maka my replacement! Go ahead, Patty, do it!"
"That's not what I meant. It's just Maka is-"
"Oh. My. Gosh. Ever since we got here, it's been Maka this or Maka that! I know that you two are close but-"
"You don't know anything!" Patty yelled. "You've never once noticed that me and Maka were friends! You've never bothered to check on me like Maka has. You've never noticed that I'm having trouble in school!"
"School?! You don't care about school!"
"Wrong again, sis! I do care! I just pretend I don't 'cuz it's too hard! You never cared enough to notice! But Maka, she did! She helped me with school while you hopelessly flirted with Soul!"
"You-"
"You know it's true! I don't even know why you try! He obviously loves Maka!"
"Maka has a boyfriend!"
"So, Soul could be Maka's boyfriend and you wouldn't care! You'd still flirt with him!"
Meanwhile…
"Daniel, can you please just stay out of this?! This is none of your concern!"
"It became my concern when you disturbed my weapons' rest and when you yelled at one of them!"
"I wouldn't have had to if everyone would've minded their own business!"
"Well, it was kind of hard! You were yelling at Liz, Patty, and then Tsubaki in the room we were all in!"
"Well, you could've just kept your mouth shut!"
"I can't! I-"
"Come on now, Daniel. Don't tell me you're too much of a cretin to know how to keep your big mouth shut."
"A what?"
"A cretin," Kid repeated. "I'll explain it in a way you'll understand. It means a stupid person."
"I am not stupid!"
"Clearly," Kid said sarcastically. "And that was sarcasm, Daniel."
"I know!"
"Oh, wonderful! We're getting somewhere!"
"You!"
Meanwhile…
"Brian, what was that?!"
"What are you talking about, Sam?"
"The yelling," Sam pointed out, frustrated.
"Dude, don't tell me the crying hasn't bothered you."
"Well, yes. But-"
"See?! That girl is being so pathetic! Her meister is a gaudy, obnoxious, egotistic idiot! And she's crying over him. I know she is probably just worried. But, come on! Crying for seven days? That's just pathetic!"
"Brian, you must understand where she's coming from. She's a kind and nurturing person. Black Star is someone she is closely attached to. It's only natural she'd be in this state."
"But, look at Danny! Look at Soul and Yuki. Danny could've lost both of us! He didn't cry once! He stayed hopeful. Soul's meister is in a coma! He can't even be in the same room as her! And Yuki, he doesn't know anything about how Ryan's doing!"
"But-"
"No! I will not pity someone that is that pathetic!"
"Brian, this is not like you!"
"You don't know me, Sam!"
"What are you talking about?! We've been Danny's weapons for so long. We've been through a lot, the three of us."
"Yeah, but you've only seen the part of me that's kind and peaceful, like you and Danny! I'm nothing like you guys! I have to try to be nice! Do you ever wonder why we had so much trouble resonating together? It's because I have to get rid of any darkness in me so we can. And even though I try so hard, it's still there! The only reason it actually works is 'cuz Danny has a small piece in him that's like me!"
Sam looked shocked. He didn't know that. No one had told him. Not Danny, not Brian.
"You see? You truly don't know me."
Meanwhile…
"Soul, please calm down!" Yuki said, standing in front of the crying Tsubaki.
"Calm down? Calm down?! How can I 'calm down'? She's being so stupid. She has so much and she can't even appreciate it! She gets to see her meister. She gets to be in the same room as him. She gets to touch him! She gets to know he will live. And she cries because she can't be with him 24/7! I can't see Maka every time I feel like it! I can't be in the same room as Maka! I can't tough her. I can't feel her! I can barely feel out connection! I don't even get to know whether she will live or die or wake up!" he yelled, tears going down his face.
"You know what, Soul? This isn't about Tsubaki! This is because you're mad at my meister! Tsubaki is just someone you can vent out on!"
"Oh, my gosh, you are so stupid. I am pissed at Tsubaki for being so stupid! She can't be happy that she can see her meister practically whenever she wants when I am thankful that I can even see Maka through a glass window! This has absolutely nothing to do with Ryan!"
"Yes, it does! I know, as well as everyone else, that you love Maka! And I see the way you look at Ryan. You pretty much hate him!"
"Yes, I hate Ryan! I hate him so, so much. And, yes, I hate him because Maka loves him! But I'm not yelling at Tsubaki because I need to 'vent out'! I'm yelling at her for being so stupid and ungrateful!"
"Soul, it's all right. A lot of people are envious of my meister. But you need-"
"SHUT UP!"
Everyone was yelling. Everyone was shocked at the things they were finding out or hearing. Everyone's connections with one another were beginning to break because of the discoveries and confessions.
After a while, nurses and security guards were in the room. They separated them. Danny, Liz, Yuki, Sam and Tsubaki stayed in that room. Soul, Kid, Patty and Brian were taken to another one. They were pretty much divided by who was mad at Tsubaki and who wasn't. Liz and Patty were separated by who forgave Kid and who didn't.
Everyone hadn't noticed, but there bonds were breaking. Danny currently had one weapon that wasn't mad at him. Kid was in the same situation. Even though they didn't fight, Maka and Soul's bond was breaking as well. Soul felt it. He had a feeling he knew the reason. He didn't want to accept it though.
The beeping of the machine was coming at a slower pace. People were getting tired and beginning to lose hope.
"Professor Stein, this doesn't seem to be working. I don't know how much longer the girl can take this. I think we should-"
"No! She wanted this. She doesn't want the black blood in her anymore. It was obvious that she was desperate to get it out…
Flashback
"Maka, I'm glad to see you've recovered so fast!"
She smiled. "Thank you, Professor Stein. It's good to be alive, I guess."
"Hm? 'I guess'? You don't seem too happy about it."
"No, it's nothing. It's just…"
"The little demon talked to you, correct?"
"How did you-"
He sighed. "I figured. You were about to die, you know. I guessed he would come and offer you something so you'd live."
"Yeah, that's right."
"So what did he want in return?"
"Control over me," she replied. "He didn't say what for though."
It was silent for a while. Then, "Do you want the black blood out of you?"
"What?"
"Do you want the black blood out of you?"
"It's not possible," she scoffed.
"I may have found a way, Maka."
Her eyes widened. "You… you have?"
"Yes, if it works, the black blood will be out of your system."
"And Soul's, too," she asked anxiously.
Stein smiled. "I was getting there. Yes, if it were to work, once we get it out of you, it'll leave Soul as well."
"Do it!"
"You don't want to hear the details?"
"I don't care. Do it!"
"Maka, it could put you in a coma. Soul would never agree, even if it would get the black blood out of the both of you. He-"
"Doesn't need to know," she interrupted. "No one knows I'm awake yet. And no one has to! If I go
into a coma, they'll think it's because of the fight."
"Maka, are you-"
"Yes! I'm sure! Just do it. I don't care if the chances of it working are less than likely. I don't care if the chance of living is zero!"
He sighed again. "All right, we'll start tomorrow-"
"Could we start today?"
"All right."
End Flashback
'It's been almost a week since we started. We've done several surgeries. She went into a coma after the first one. But, we must continue. It was obvious that she wanted this desperately. We can't stop. Everyone thinks she's in a coma because of the fight. She was willing to lie to everyone so she could have this.'
"Professor," one of the surgeons exclaimed. "It's starting to work!"
Stein rushed over. He looked at all the black blood that was being taken out of Maka. It was finally working!
'Don't worry, Maka. This will be over soon.'
