Chapter 25: Hospital Visits
Cassidy's POV:
Cold
All I felt was cold.
The air around me was could, the air in me was cold. My entire body from head to toe was freezing cold.
'It's happening again,' I thought to myself. 'I'm gonna lose somebody else. I'm going to lose my big brother on the same day I lost my father.'
"Cassidy sweetheart please start getting changed," Grace said to me again. "I have to go get the boys up as well."
"I'll be ready in 20 minutes," I heard myself saying. She nodded and smiled at me petting my hair once before heading out the door to get James and Sirius. I started to get dressed in the clothes she put out for me.
She had pulled out a gray t-shirt and jeans. I pulled on the shirt and the jeans then went over to my dresser to grab socks. I put on the socks and went into my closet and pulled out brown combat boots that were folded over. I pulled my hair into a messy ponytail and put on my glasses. I grabbed a green army jacket out of my closet before heading out the door and down the stairs.
No one else was down there yet so I splashed so cold water on my face and took a minute to breath. I had gotten ready so quickly I hadn't had a chance to do that yet. I took in deep breaths and before I knew it I was breathing fast and heavy. I could feel tears streaming down my cheeks and I felt the cool kitchen floor beneath my fingertips. I heard pounding feet on the stairs and Sirius was next to me in an instant.
"It's gonna be ok Cassi," he said pulling me off the floor and into his embrace. "I promise you he's gonna make it through this."
"You don't know that Sirius," I sobbed pulling away from him. "It amazes me he even made it out of the apartment still breathing! Those death eaters had intentions of killing him, they always do! For all I know he could be taking in his last breaths and I won't be able to see him ever again!"
I finally stopped ranting and yelling to breathe slower and deeper. I get pulled into his arms once again.
"I can't lose him too Sirius," I whispered into his chest.
"You won't Cassidy," he whispered in my ear. "I promise you, that he'll live. He'll beat this. I swear."
"Okay," I whispered back. I stepped back and wiped my tears on the sleeve of my jacket. I went to the sink and filled a cup with water before downing the whole thing in a few gulps. I then wet a paper towel and dab it on my face. Soon James and Grace come downstairs and we floo to the hospital. Chris is already there when we get to the reception desk.
"His rooms upstairs on the 4th level room 416," he said pulling Grace to his side. "Come with me."
We all follow him to the lift and we head up to the 4th level. I ran as fast as I could as soon as the doors to the lift opened down to see my older brother. I burst into the room only to find another person already in there.
"You," I spat at the blond man standing at my brother's bedside.
"Ah Miss. Clark," Lucius Malfoy greeted. "What a nice surprise to see you again."
"Get out of here this instance," I commanded. "You're not welcome. You're probably the cause of this in the first place."
"Why my dear," he snickered. "What reason could I possibly have to put your brother in the hospital? I think you are just a little sleep deprived."
"Sleep deprived my-"
"Lucius," Chris said darkly. "I think it'd be best if you leave now."
Lucius glared at Chris then down at me. I was glaring right back at him. He finally let out a sigh and pushed me out of the way.
"I was just leaving anyways," he said. He started out the door before turning back and looking at me once more.
"I'd be careful who you accuse of doing such monstrous things Miss. Clark," he noted. "Now is not the time to be creating enemies."
I glared at his retreating figure but turned back to Spencer when I heard him make a small sound. His face looked peaceful, besides the fact that it was covered in cuts and bruises. I run my hand down his face and leave it resting on his cheek. Suddenly his hand slowly comes up and covers mine.
"Spencer," I whisper. His mouth breaks into a small smile and I can feel tears racing down my face.
"Hey Cass," he croaks. "You look like hell."
I let loose a small watery laugh and I kiss his forehead.
"Me? Look at you," I said with a small smile. "What the hell happened Spence?"
"I don't know," he said his voice cracking. I quickly poured water into a plastic cup that was sitting on the bedside table and gave it to him. He down it in two gulps and handed it back to me.
"I heard a knocking on my door around midnight and I got up to answer it," he said. "I was pretty wiped so I forgot to bring my wand with me and when I looked through the peephole no one was there. I opened it and as soon as I did. Two guys in white masks and black cloaks ambushed me."
"Oh Spence," I gasped placing my hand on top of his.
"I don't really remember much after that," he admitted after a moment or two.
"We're just glad you're alright," Grace said placing a hand on his shoulder. He smiled up at her but then his eyes started to flutter again but he was fighting to stay awake.
"Go to sleep Spence," I said rubbing a hand over his hair. "You need it."
He nodded his head and began a slow decent into a deep slumber. I turned around and noticed that it was only Grace, Chris, and I in the room.
"Where did the boy's go," I asked frowning.
"They went upstairs to the tea room," Grace said taking hold of my arm and leading me towards the door. "Why don't you go join them? I was just going to call the Healer in a have him take another look at Spencer okay?"
I nodded my head and walked down the hall towards the lift. It took me one more floor up to the guest tea room and gift shop. I entered the tea room and immediately spotted Sirius and James. I slowly made my way over to them and sat down.
"Is he okay," James asked softly. I nodded my head and waved a waitress down to order some tea. I looked at a clock on the wall and it read 2:48am. I sighed and realized that's why hardly anyone was in here. It also explained the snooty look on the waitresses face.
"Your parents are talking with the Healer right now to see what the damage is in real medical terms not whatever Spencer says hurts him," I said sipping my tea slowly.
"Do you think he'll be all right," Sirius asked.
"I don't know," I said with a shoulder shrug. "He looked ok. Just a little banged up nothing too serious. But he was covered up mostly by a blanket, I didn't see anything chest down, only chest up."
"Did he wake up at all," James asked.
"Yeah," I nodded. "He was up, we talked, and he fell back asleep. Oh and Lucius Malfoy was in there."
"What," they both exclaimed at once earning us a 'Shhh' from the waitress.
"Why was Lucius Malfoy in your brother's hospital room?" James asked.
"To finish what he started," Sirius said staring at the wall in across the room. James and I both looked at him worried. He looked between the two of us and rolled his eyes.
"Oh come on guys," he said sitting up straighter. "Please tell me I wasn't the only one thinking about it."
"You weren't," I admitted. "In fact, I basically told him I thought he did it."
"You did what?" James hissed.
"Cassidy how stupid are you?" Sirius snapped at the same time.
"What! I don't see the problem," I exclaimed.
"The problem is you're probably already hated enough for being related to Spencer," Sirius explained. "Now you went and blamed someone from one of the most powerful pureblood families in the wizarding world for hurting your brother. You are basically a walking target."
"Okay," James said placing a hand out. "That's taking it a bit far but he's right Cassi. They're gonna be out for blood. Especially since they didn't succeed in taking your brother out completely."
"Well damn it," I said after a moment of silence. "So what you guys are saying is I'm royally screwed?"
They both nodded their heads.
Great.
After an hour or so we went back down to visit with Spencer more. James and Sirius talked about the Aurors and I sat on the couch and rested my eyes. I must have fallen asleep because James was shaking me awake a few hours later.
"Mom and Dad are sending us home for the night," he said holding out a hand. "Come on."
I took his hand and he pulled me up. I slipped on my shoes and my jacket and kissed Spencer good-bye. James and I then left the room and met everyone else down in the lobby. We all floo'd home and I went straight upstairs. I kicked off my boots and threw my jacket on the armchair in the corner of my room. I pulled off my socks and fell into bed sleep overcoming me quickly.
I woke the next morning and immediately headed for the shower. I stripped off my clothes throwing them in the hamper. I then started the water and turned it as hot as I could stand it. I washed away the smell of hospital with honey smelling soap. I then washed my growing hair with the shampoo to match the soap. I jumped out and dried my body with a towel letting my soaking wet hair drip down my back.
I pulled on a bra and some knickers before grabbing my robe and wrapping it tightly against my body. I entered my closet and looked for something to wear. I pulled out a black dress with white polka dots and a brown belt across the waist, a black leather jacket, a maroon crocheted infinity scarf and maroon leather high heeled boots. I then went into my dresser and pulled out patterned black tights.
I pulled on the tights and the dress before going over to my vanity and starting my hair and make-up. I curled my hair into big messy curls and put on mascara and eyeliner. I shook out my hair and pulled on my boots, leather jacket, and scarf before grabbing my bag and stuffed some homework in it then left the room and quietly went down stairs. Grace was already there making breakfast.
"Well don't you look pretty this morning," she said smiling. I smiled back and took a piece of toast munching it down pretty quickly.
"Thanks Grace," I replied.
"Where are you off too this morning?" she asked
"I was going to stop by Diagon Alley and get something and bring it to Spencer, then I was going to head over to the cemetery for a little while," I told her pouring myself a glass of milk.
"All by yourself? I don't think that's a good idea honey," she said frowning. I groaned and placed my bag on a stool.
"Please Grace? I'll be super carful," I pried. She sighed and shook her head.
"What if I took one of the boys with me? Could I go then," I pleaded. She thought about it for a moment before nodding her head.
"Okay fine," she said. "Go pick your poison." I squealed and said thanks before grabbing my bag and sprinting up the stairs. I knocked on James' door and asked him but he was getting ready to have breakfast with Lily and her parents. I then went down to Sirius' room and knocked on the door.
No answer.
I knocked again and heard him groan. I took this as a sign that I could come in. I entered the room and realized he was still asleep. I put down my bag and walked over to the bed. I kicked the bed hoping the vibrations would wake him up.
They didn't.
I started shaking him and whispering his name and his eyes soon began to flutter open. He wiped the sleep away from his eyes and jumped back a bit because of our close proximity.
"Merlin Cassidy," he said running a hand through his hair. "What could you possibly want at 7 in the morning?"
"I'm going on a little outing today and I need someone to accompany me according to Grace," I began. "You in?"
"What will we be doing on this 'outing'? Will it cause me pain in anyway," he asked standing up and heading into his closet.
"I need to pick something up and bring it to Spencer at St. Mungos, then I am going to the cemetery, and then into London for a few hours," I told him. He emerged from his closet dressed in jeans and a black t-shirt. He held a pair of black converse in his hands.
"Sure," he said sitting on his bed beginning to lace them up.
"Sure? Just like that you're coming," I said surprised.
"You sound so surprised," he said smirking at me.
"I am," I confessed. "Like you said it's 7am and you are willing to come with me. On vacation mind you."
"Well James is going out with Evans so I'm your only option," he said grabbing his leather jacket from his desk chair. "Plus we haven't hung out in a while."
"This is true," I noted. "Alright let's go."
We went down stairs and floo'd to the Leaky Caldron. We said hello to Tom then went out back and tapped the bricks to let us into Diagon Alley. I went into Flourish and Blotts Bookshop to pick a book out for Spencer.
"A book Cassi? Really," Sirius said shaking his head.
"What's wrong with a book? He loves books," I protested.
"But as a present in the hospital," he said skeptically. "'I'm sorry you almost died here's a book.' Come on we're leaving." He grabbed my hand and led me out of the store and down the alley. We entered Sugarplum's Sweet Shop and the smell of sugar instantly filled my nose.
"This is what you get someone when they are in the hospital," Sirius stated gesturing towards the aisles and aisles of sweet treats. "This or flowers."
"Oh!" I exclaimed. "I have to get flowers too! I almost forgot thanks Sirius." He smiled proudly and led me to the sweets.
I ended up getting him 2 chocolate frogs and a bag over Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans. I paid for them and had them gift wrapped and then we went back down the alley to the Leaky Cauldron. On our way down I bought a bouquet of blue daisies and then we floo'd to St. Mungos. We signed in and headed upstairs to Spencer's room.
"I'll just wait out here," Sirius said. I nodded and smiled then entered the room. Spencer was sitting up in his bed with a smile on his face. Also in the room was one of the healers.
"Cassidy," he beamed. "Just in time. Cassidy this is Healer Marks he's been taking care of me. Healer Marks this is my little sister Cassidy."
"Nice to meet you Cassidy," Healer Marks said smiling. "Spencer has told me all about you."
"Only good things I hope," I laughed reaching to shake his hand.
"Of course, of course," he boomed meeting my hand. "Well I better get going plenty of patients to see. Lovely to meet you Cassidy, and get plenty of rest Mr. Clark." He then left the room leaving me and Spencer alone.
"Well he certainly is a chipper guy," I noted.
"Yeah," Spencer laughed. "He's great."
"Anyways," I said changing the subject. "I brought you this." I handed him the bag with the sweets.
"Cassidy," he beamed. "You shouldn't have."
"It was nothing," I said brushing it off. "You're lucky Sirius was with me, I was going to get you a book but he convinced me otherwise."
"A book? Really Cassidy," he taunted. "I thought you were better than that."
"So when are you out of here?" I asked changing the subject.
"Not for another couple of days," he sighed. "He said I could leave Christmas day as long as I come back and get checked on before the night is over."
"Well that's good I suppose," I told him. "It's better than nothing."
"Right you are Cassidy," he smiled. We talked for a few more minutes until a nurse came in telling me he had to take some potions.
"Well I had better go," I said gathering my things. "I'll stop by within the next couple of days."
"You don't have to Cassidy," he said.
"But I want to," I said kissing his cheek. "Take care of yourself Spence,"
"You to Cass," he called out as I left the room.
"Ready to do this," Sirius asked as we made our way downstairs to apparated to the cemetery.
"I think I am," I said my voice wavering.
"Don't worry Cass," he said slipping my arm through his. "I'm here for you."
"I know Sirius," I said leaning my head on his shoulder a small smile gracing my face. "I know."
