Ender's POV
I knelt on the ground, still unable to comprehend what had happened. One minute I had been standing before Teloxen, trying to figure out what to do, then Mist had asked me to move. Next thing I knew, it felt as if someone had cut me in two with a lightning bolt, and I was quite literally face to face with myself.
I could hear fragments of what was going on around me, and what struck me as unusual was that Mist and Teloxen seemed to know each other. Indeed, they seemed to know each other quite well for those who were on the opposite sides of the grand conflict Mist always spoke of. It made me wonder it they had been something more than mere opponents. As their confrontation continued, the sneaking suspicion within me only grew. It explained too much of what had just occurred. But it was still a hard thing to believe. After all, how much would Mist have been willing to sacrifice to follow her heart?
My thoughts were broken when a star burst of chaos energy flashed over me. It took me a moment to realize that the assault had not even been directed at me, but rather the force of it had been so strong that the left over energy had felt as strong as a full on attack. I raised my gaze from the spot on the ground where I had been focused for the moments I had spent in thought. As I did so, I was careful to move as little as possible, trying not to attract any attention to myself. The force I had felt had to have come from a powerful source, and I figured it would be wise to have some idea of what I was facing before I joined in.
What I saw did not make sense to me at first, until I realized that the figure laying on the ground was Teloxen. Then the scene resolved itself into a meaningful image. Two figures in gray robes of different shades stood a handful of steps away from Mist, who looked as if she might faint at the slightest provocation. The chaos energy was likely to have come from one of the two figures, but when I tried to sense how much power they had, so that I would have at least some idea of how badly outmatched I was, I nearly passed out from the sheer amount of chaos present in the air. Struggling to keep the chaos out of my system and still stay conscious, I began to slowly rise to my feet. Once I reached a crouching position, I stopped, to tired to move again. Hopefully this position would allow me to be of some help to Mist. I knew I would be of little assistance given the strength of the lords before me, but she needed all the help she could get, and I was one of the few people who might be able to help right now.
Notchie's POV
It all happened so fast, there was no way I could react save staring and watching events unfold. Two lords of chaos appeared before us suddenly, scattering massive amounts of chaos energy around. This left me doubting if I could do any magic at all due to the dark energy, but I had never tried using my magic with any amount of chaos present, let alone in such amounts. No matter what the end effect might have been, I decided against using it in order to prevent any well intended magic from injuring a friend.
Another wave of magic surged towards me, and I unconsciously threw a dome of magic over myself, despite the decision I had made only moments before. The spell blocked the majority of the burst, but what made it through the shield cut right through me and sent me crashing down, gasping for breath. Rationally, I knew there was nothing wrong with me, but that did not stop me from searching for wounds my body insisted were there. Through half closed eyes, I saw silhouetted in the gold light of my shield the figure of Teloxen laying on the ground. It seemed that the blast which had washed through me had not even been intended for me. I could not even imagine what immense power must have hit Teloxen considering the sheer amount of energy that had come my way even though I was situated on the outer edge of the spell's target area.
Exhausted from having to take in magic tainted with chaos and still aching from the attack, I lay under the shield and hoped I would have the strength to fight if there was no other option.
Mist's POV
I stared at the crest on Teloxen's arm, my thoughts as random as the masses of chaos magic that filled the air around me. I was aware of the danger I was in for not immediately assessing the risk which the chaos lords possessed to me and my fallen allies. The mark was one I vaguely recognized, but for some reason I could not place where I had seen it before. The slight tap of a footstep directly behind me told me that I should have acted sooner to see what danger I must prepare for.
"Pathetic isn't it" I heard an eerily familiar voice say. I turned slowly, my eyes falling upon the last person I wanted to see right then.
"Zeren" I hissed, finally making the connection between the rune and its purpose. "I did not think even you could sink this low, but it appears I was mistaken."
"I don't know what you're talking about" he said, feigning ignorance by shrugging and sweeping his wings back in a gesture of helplessness. The feathers of his wings caught the light of the still rising sun and scattered speckles of color across the rooftop, each feather reflecting a different color as the light traveled from the black top of his wings to the pale gray feathers at the base.
"I am perfectly aware you are lying" I spat "I just can not believe that you would do this to one of your own people. What kind of lord are you? And to your own son?" At this last bit, I heard a small gasp, quickly stifled, and tracked its source to where Notchie lay under a dome of protective energy. Apparently he had not been completely incapacitated by the chaos energy that had taken down Teloxen through Zeren's rune.
"Oh, I had no problem with it" said Zeren, all pretenses of innocence gone "After all, it was necessary. There was no way he could do even the most basic duties of a basic chaos lord. This was to test if he could ever have a chance of rising in our ranks, and it has been a bitter failure."
"He made some intriguing creatures though" said Sallen, his gray-green eyes gleaming "I shall have to spend much time correcting their flaws, but the Withers he made could easily stand up to your kind's dragons."
"Do your people have not shame?" I asked, trying to contain my anger "You set up something to test Teloxen, then do your best to make him fail."
"Well he has got to know how to deal with something" said Zeren "Otherwise he would be completely useless to us. Chaos kind often cause problems even amongst themselves, so he should have been expecting it."
"His heart betrays him as well" said Sallen, not looking up from where Izra, Notch and Ender lay. A strange pattern of magic crossed the rooftop as this was said, but I dismissed it as a byproduct of the unusual combination of magic types surrounding us.
"How so?" I asked, doing my best to keep any hint of recognition of the topic at hand from my voice.
"He fell for a member of our enemy's kind" said Sallen, a small smile crossing his lips "As I am sure you know."
"Really?" gasped Zeren, eyes open wide "Why didn't you tell me before?" he asked Sallen, eyes angry behind his shocked expression.
"Not all things I know are for you to hear" said Sallen, irritation clear on his face "I thought you knew that, but apparently I was mistaken."
"So my son fell for an enemy lady did he." said Zeren, eyes on the horizon. I noticed Teloxen begin to awaken, and I motioned for him to keep quiet as he opened his mouth to ask some question. "This is unacceptable. He must be punished for this alone besides what else he must answer for."
"You should talk Zeren" I heard a voice say from behind me. I turned slightly in order to get the figure into my field of vision. The figure I glimpsed did not provide much of a clue of who had spoken, save for the fact that she was an Enderlord. Her presence though, was instantly recognizable.
"Tanya" said Zeren, his voice light. "How fortunate it is that fate has brought you here now."
"Fate has nothing to do with it Zeren" said Tanya "You know I make my own way, and if fate has its own plans, well thats too bad for it."
"Be that as it may" said Zeren "That still leaves the question of why you are here."
"Well that answer is so obvious that you should already know it" she said "It is all because you are here."
"I'm curious" said Sallen "How did you know Zeren would be here today? It is not something that happens on a regular basis."
"Oh, I have my ways." said Tanya cryptically "But what really makes me angry" she said in a dangerously low tone "Is what you have dared to do to your child. Even your order had some decency, and you have gone far beyond their usual level of cruelty."
"Why do you show so much concern for this one?" asked Sallen, eyes bright with curiosity, taking in every detail of the events before him to go over in more detail at a later date. "After all he is the child of your most despised enemy."
Tanya looked away before saying "Haven't you ever wondered how the most terrible conflicts can spring from what seem like innocent events at the time? How a simple word or gesture can win wars and bring down empires?"
"I am not sure how this is related?" said Sallen "But continue"
"Oh, it is most defiantly related" said Tanya, whirling around to face Zeren, her eyes ablaze with fury "because Zeren was my husband and Teloxen is my son. And this fact led to the greatest defeat my kind has ever experienced."
A/N: I hope that you have enjoyed this chapter. Please consider leaving a review as they help me to know what people like and would like to see more of in my writing. And now it is time for questions for the characters.
From Derp(guest) to all the bad guys: What would each of you do if I trolled you?
Zeren: As I said before, it would not end well for you.
Teloxen:Depends what happened
Sallen:You don't want to know.
From Derp(guest) to all the good guys: What would each of you do if I trolled you?
Me: Just to keep this from going on for pages, I will say none of them would enjoy it and most of them would go after you.
From Derp(guest) to Notch: Why did you not think to look for marks earlier?
Notch: When you have been locked in a dungeon for who know how long, the first thing you think of doing is not check to see if you have strange marks on yourself. Also, how would I have had any idea what they meant anyway. I don't have much experience dealing with chaos lords.
From Derp(guest) to everyone: what would you do if I trapped you all on a abandoned island with no food, weapons or powers. And you had to work together :)
Sallen: Well, there would be a very short time where everyone tried to work together, then something would happen which caused a fight and pretty much everyone would end up dead.
From Spazington36 to Teloxen: Have you ever considered never joining this war or did Zeren force you?
Teloxen: Zeren forced me to fight in the Chaos war, and this conflict now is directly related to how badly I did in that, so yes, he forced me one hundred percent.
From Spazington36 to Zeren: ...Umm...Zeren are you spying on everyone because you probably wouldn't have known what they were doing without spying.
Zeren: Of course I am spying on everyone. How else would I be able to come up with such lovely plans to deal with our enemies.
Sallen: Shut up Zeren, I am the one who does all our planing. You couldn't plan your way out of a cobblestone box.
If you have any questions for the characters, you can PM them to me or leave them in a review. I hope you have a great day and I shall see you all next chapter. Bye! :D
