CHAPTER 25
A quiet gasp echoed from Light's mouth as the destruction of the library came to view.
Most of the bookshelves were down on the ground, a few even split in half violently with cracks embedding through their dusty wooden surface. Some pages were torn out of books, carelessly scattered on the ground. It looked as if a tornado torn through the room in one harsh sweep. Chaos. Surprisingly, the rest of the room looked decent except the broken glass by the window in front of them. Sharp pieces of transparent material dangerously lurked underneath the window sill, threatening to pierce through any trespasser's feet.
What stood out the most was the shattered jar of strawberry jam in the epicentre of the disaster.
It looked quite old and rather gross in Light's opinion. Safe to say that it is definitely not edible anymore.
"He was here."
L solemnly stated and bit his lip, taking precarious steps toward the jam.
"I know. It was like he had some breakdown here a long time ago," Light's eyes traveled around the remains of the library, trying to find anymore leads to help them figure out where he is now.
"Six months ago, at the very least," the detective murmured, "but, why come here specifically? Beyond is a man of reason. He calculates his every action very carefully. There has to a reason."
He ran a hand through his brown locks, thinking deeply. "Maybe he was looking for something?..."
"Valid point, Light-kun," L nibbled on his thumb, eyes growing darker, the cogs turning in his mind like crazy. "What would he need that long ago?..."
"Don't ask me, Ryuzaki," Light scoffed, "you should know you're psycho twin more than me!"
"Also true, hm," he sighed and sat down on a scratched up sofa nearby, knees tucked towards his chest, thumb preoccupied in his mouth.
Light rolled his eyes and walked around the place. There has got to be something in here. He knows it. Beyond Birthday is most definitely not the type to randomly come and wreck an entire library for no reason whatsoever. He either lost his mind here or became frustrated of not being able to find something. Either way, there has to be at least one reason why. He was determined to figure it out. Crack the psycho's mental maze of riddles.
An insane laughter bounced off the window-less walls in a nearly pitch black room.
Only a single screen illuminated through the darkness, revealing where the disturbing noises came from. His widened eyes gleamed red among the black, craziness swirling in his orbs like a storm of clashing tornadoes across an oblique plague. If one word was used to describe the cackling individual, it would be psychotic. He continued to observe the two in the library, entertained by watching them struggle to solve the riddle he laid out deliberately for them. Although he wasn't L's successor anymore, he was most definitely L's most significant threat as of now.
Long pale fingers stretched to reach for a strawberry, dangling the red sweet fruit above his mouth.
"I didn't expect this to be so much fun!~"
A lopsided grin stretched across his pale painted face, tongue flicking against the surface of the strawberry in a playful manner.
"But. . . ." He trailed off, pouting slightly. "Sadly, no one will make it out alive in the end."
His teeth shredded through the fruit in one powerful gnaw.
"I will be the only winner this time!~" He announced with a strong sense of certainty, intent on achieving his current goal.
Furious tapping against the keyboard was heard as the world's greatest criminal devised his next move.
