One Second
Chapter 25
Hey guys, I know a few of you didn't like the previous chapter. Yes, Maura isn't the type to cheat but I wanted to display that it was a lot of pent up emotions from all of Jane's traumas, she was trying to get a release. I'm sorry if you didn't like it, but I thought it needed to happen.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this one better
I would also like to express my deepest condolences to all of Lee Thompson Young's friends, family, colleagues and fans, he was a great actor who will be truly missed.
Once Jane was out of sight about 3 blocks away from Maura's home, she walked back, tears flowing freely. As she made it back to her house, she re-opened the front door which she assumed Emily had closed, walking into the hallway, she noticed the letter that Jane had dropped upon leaving. She picked it up, and reading it, she began to cry more. Realizing the real reason for Jane's visit. She didn't know what to do, it was nearly 11. Who could she call? She needed someone. She'd already tried Jane's phone numerous times and kept getting voicemail every time. So she went somewhere she knew they wouldn't turn her away.
Once arriving, she knocked on the door a few times, it was late, but she hoped they wouldn't be asleep. It was about 3 minutes later that Maura decided they were probably asleep, she turned and began making her way down the steps when she heard her name being called in a sleepy daze.
"Maura? What are you doing here? Is everything ok?" No, everything isn't ok. It was all it took for Maura to burst into tears again, it wasn't long before being enveloped in a hug and ushered inside and placed on the couch.
"Honey who is it?" Was called from the hallway. Sofia stood from the couch and walked over to Jesse who was stumbling from their bedroom. She whispered a few things before Jesse disappeared into the kitchen and Sofia returned to Maura.
"Maura, what happened? Is Jane ok?" Sofia asked gently.
"It's…it's all my fault. I was drunk, I missed talking to Jane and it just happened, it wasn't meant to, it just all happened so fast and I now I don't know where Jane is and I don't know what to do. It's all my fault and she won't talk to me, and I love her so much and I didn't mean to hurt her and now I don't know where she is and I just want to talk to her, to explain. She's never going to forgive me, I completely betrayed her, again." Maura babbled through her tears. Sofia just sat and listened, letting her finish. "Please help me, I don't know what to do. How do I get her to listen to me? How do I make her see? I love her, I only want her and I don't know what to do to make it right?" Maura continued.
"Shh, shh." Was all Sofia could muster under the circumstances. Maura cried into her shoulder for a good five minutes before the sobbing ceased. At this point, Jesse had returned with three mugs of coffee and placed them on the table in front of Maura and Sofia, she then took a seat in the arm chair to the side of Maura, gently rubbing her knee.
"Ok Maura, start from the beginning because you're rambling hasn't made much sense yet." Sofia joked.
"Ok well, I made this friend at BCU called Emily, we've been going out to lunch and getting together quite a lot over the last few weeks, I knew that I was neglecting Jane but I was so excited to make new friends that I knew Jane wouldn't mind. Then earlier today, at dinner, Emily asked me to come to a party, I got a little drunk and she brought me home. I was getting a glass of water and she sort of snuck up on me and I accidently poured my water over her, so I suggested she grab a t-shirt from my room and I went to lay down on the couch and must've fallen asleep because she woke me up a few minutes later and I was so startled that I fell off the couch, she tried to catch me and ended up falling on top of me. I may have neglected to mention that she didn't have a shirt on, just her bra. Then next thing I know, she's kissing me, and I couldn't stop myself, before anything else happened, Jane walked in with a massive smile on her face, and seeing her put all the pieces together was just heart-breaking, I could see the devastation on her face, she ran out and I tried to follow her, but we all know that's impossible. Then when I got home I found this." Maura pulled the letter from her pocket and showed it to Sofia who read it and passed it to Jesse. "And then I came straight here. I really don't know what to do. How do I fix this?" Maura was now crying gently, tears just flowing, she wasn't sobbing so she was still relatively easy to understand. Jesse finished reading the letter and gave it back to Maura.
"So you think she came over to celebrate?" Jesse asked, completely missing the whole point of the story Maura had just told.
"I don't know, I guess so. And now I can't talk to her, and tell her I love her." Maura explained. "We all know what she is like, and I don't want her to do something stupid." Sofia and Jesse gave each other a knowing nod. Jesse was about to continue but Sofia spoke first.
"Honey, listen. Jane knows you love her, she does. But we also know that she's going to need time to process what has happened. So I don't think that you should push trying to talk to her because that would most likely just push her further away. So just give it time, and things will sort themselves out." Sofia suggested.
"But what if they don't? What if Jane never forgives me? She shouldn't I know she shouldn't, if I was in her position I probably wouldn't but I need to explain that it wasn't as bad as she thinks, all we did was kiss. It honestly didn't go any further than that, but when Jane walked in, Emily's face was covered in my lipstick and she was half naked. Jane was devastated, hurt, betrayed and angry, all in one go and I know that I'm the one that caused it and I just need to fix it."
"Right now, there is nothing you can do. Jane won't want to talk to anyone right now. We will talk to her tomorrow and see where she stands with everything, ok? But right now, you should try and get some sleep, I know it won't be easy, of course it won't, but that's what you should try. You're more than welcome to stay here if you want some company, but that's up to you."
"I think I'd like that but I don't want to impose more than I already have, are you sure it's ok?" When Jesse and Sofia nod simultaneously Maura continues. "Thank you and I'm sorry I interrupted your evening." Maura apologizes.
"Honey you don't have to apologize for anything, we're here for you and Jane whenever you need us." Sofia explains.
About 20 minutes later, Maura is settling into the bed of their spare bedroom, she just continues to think about how everything went so wrong so quickly, she is brought out of here revere when she hears faint voices from the room next to her.
"Where do you think Jane is?" It's Jesse, she can tell by the tone of voice, all worry. It is clear that Jesse is on Jane's side, of course she is. Why wouldn't she be? It is my fault. Maura ponders but keeps listening.
"I honestly don't know babe. I wonder why she did it? Jane is strong, she'll be ok, but whether or not she'll forgive her, I don't know. It's always difficult to predict what Jane will do and this situation makes it even harder."
"No babe, Jane will act like she's ok. Like when we were down there with Hoyt, she was strong for my benefit, I know she was, and we both knew that was what she was doing, but it made me feel better. She was joking around like it was no big deal, but it was, it was huge, she came to face her demons for me, someone she barely knows. I just haven't been able to fathom it, I just don't know why Maura would do that to someone like Jane." Maura could hear Jesse crying over her own tears but tried to keep quiet so she could keep listening, she knew it was a private conversation, but any insight in what happened down there, Maura told her self it was worth eavesdropping. "Hoyt was the most disgusting human being on this planet and she stood up to him, knowing what he was capable of, when he was going to….touch me….Jane yelled 'Don't fucking touch her. You want me, well here I am.' Jane prevented me from getting hurt and took the beating that I was supposed to have and more. I couldn't watch the first round, Jane told me to close my eyes and think of you, and I did but I couldn't help but think that if Jane didn't come, then all of that would've happened to me, I wouldn't have been able to cope, I don't know what I would've done." It was clear to Maura that Jesse hadn't spoken about this, it was clear just from her tears, and the way Sofia was supporting her and just listening. Maura didn't think about how much this affected Jesse, she only thought about Jane, but now she had a direct insight into what it was like to watch Jane get hurt and not be able to do anything to stop it. She listened as Jesse continued.
"She voluntarily put herself back in that situation, knowing that he could rape her or kill her, she knew that and still came. I know that she is just that type of person, but that doesn't negate what she's done, and how Maura could betray her like that, I just don't know, it makes no sense to me." Apparently Sofia's curiosity got the better of her because she asked a question.
"Did he rape her?" Her voice was so quiet Maura almost didn't hear it, but she knew what the question was going to be, she would've asked the same thing.
"No, just kept taunting her about last time, telling her that she ruined it. That it was her fault, she escaped and he didn't get to fulfill his wishes with her. He was saving it for the 50th day. He just kept saying it, over and over. It was the first time he was really angry. I was so scared, I just kept begging, but Jane just knew what to do, like she was almost prepared. In a weird twisted way, he loves her, and that's what freaked me out the most. He kept complimenting her, and how the scars look like art and that she was his masterpiece. I don't know how she barely winced when he cut her. Sofi, there was so much blood, from this time and the last. When we were alone, I pondered how many women that he'd had down there over the years, and from the look on Jane's face, I knew the stains were all hers, then she said that there were no stains when she was first down there, and then I knew. In that basement, any other person would have died. There was too much blood not to have done, so how Jane got out I don't know." When Jesse said that Hoyt didn't rape Jane, Sofia let out a loud sigh of relief, as did Maura from the next room, then as Jesse continued to explain about last time, Maura let out another sigh of relief, Hoyt never raped her, that was why she escaped, so she could still be left with something that he hadn't touched.
"Jess, what happened outside? How did you disarm him?" Everyone had thought that Jesse had disarmed him because when they were arriving, Jesse was sobbing in Jane's arms and Jane had explained that the gun would have her prints plus Jesse's, so they knew Jesse had it first.
"I didn't." Jesse took in a deep breath and wiped the tears from her eyes, Sofia just waited for her to continue. "When Jane untied us from the basement, she took the knife she stuck in Hoyt and a scalpel, which she put in her boot, I never knew why she did at the time, but I knew she had reasons. Once we were outside, she tackled him to the ground and then he pulled a gun, then Jane puts her hands behind her head, leant down on her knees and then got the scalpel from her boot and stabbed him, saying something ironic that I can't remember now. Then I took the gun he dropped, pointed it at him. Sof, I was so close to shooting him, I'd cocked the gun, and almost pulled the trigger, then Jane told me that I didn't have to become one of them and that I'd never be able to live with myself, and I knew she was right. But I just broke down." Upon telling the story, Jesse had started crying, it was obvious from the change in tones in her voice. And next door, silently weeping was Maura. She never realized how much anger Jesse had built up inside from that incident, and it opened a lot of doors into how Jane felt, how Jane reacts and why it still affects her.
"You're ok now, nothing is ever going to happen again, I promise. And if it does, I've just heard that one of my former students has been accepted into the police academy." To this Jesse let out a slight chuckle, but they stopped talking. She knew what she had to do tomorrow. She had to find Jane, she had to talk to her, she had to explain. She could hear the rain pounding down on the roof and on the windows and it wasn't long before Maura drifted off to sleep, dreaming of Jane.
I know most of you thought that Jane and Maura would talk during this one, sorry guys :) It's not something I wanted to rush :) But don't worry they will talk. I hope you enjoyed it.
