1858 June 29th – Tokyo, Japan
"Father?"
"Yes?"
"Why does Tenten never come to visit us, in Japan?" Hizashi Hyuuga turned to his young son, Neji Hyuuga.
He gave him a soft smile before kneeling down to the small boys height. "Well Neji, Lord Chu is afraid the trip may be a bit too much for Tenten." The young boy raised a brow in question, too much for Tenten? That was absurd, he took the trip every year with his father, and it wasn't that bad. How could it be too much for Tenten. Seeing the confusion in his sons face Hizashi could do nothing more than chuckle. He put a hand on his sons head. "The trip is not entirely safe for young girls like Tenten, her father worries for her safety. You'll understand when you're older my son," he stood, "by then Tenten will be a young lady, and you a man. Things will be much clearer then." Neji himself still felt unsatisfied at his fathers answer, but chose to say nothing more. He found it so peculiar though, why wouldn't Tenten be safe? Was it because she was a girl? What did that have to do with it? The young Hyuuga was so lost in his thoughts that he took no notice of his fathers disintegrating form. By the time Neji looked up once again Hizashi was completely gone from sight, and he was no longer standing in the compound, but he instead stood in dark nothingness. He looked down and realized he was no longer a little boy, but once again his eighteen year old self.
He looked around in wonder, just what was happening? Then suddenly he heard screaming, shrill female screams that shook his very core. They were pained, and in the screams were words that begged for mercy and help. Neji whipped his head all around and willed his eyes to see more clearly in the dark, but they wouldn't let him. He could do nothing more then sit there and listen, he was already unsettled by this decision, but it only left him more uncomfortable as the female that screamed began to scream for him. Desperation flooded his veins as the adrenalin caused his heart beat to pick up in speed. The voice and screams sounded so familiar to him, but where in the hell could he have heard it from? The screams continued and only increased in volume; he felt as if his head would explode from the intensity of it. He clapped his hands over his ears to drown out the noise. He could do nothing for this person yet had to be tortured by their call for him? This was a nightmare he wanted to escape, suddenly though, as if some other worldly force had heard his silent plea, the screams ceased.
It took him a moment to realize this, but once he did he immediately began to relax, and just as his hands removed themselves from his ears, he heard a whimpering whisper call "Neji...help me...please..."
Neji gasped as he jolted up from his bed. He let go of ragged breaths as he felt the light sheen of sweat on his forehead cooling. He swallowed as he looked down and cringed slightly at his sweaty sheets tightly entangling his legs. The tweeting of birds brought his gaze to the window next to him. The sun had just begun to rise causing the sky to spill colorful inks across its already burning orange canvas. He sighed as he turned forward, and began to slowly peel the blanket away from his still sweaty form. He felt uncomfortable to an extent that was very unlike him, and it was all because of that damn dream. He scowled as he stood; he'd been having many dreams such as that one for many nights now. They were becoming annoying and a complete hindrance to his usual calm lifestyle. Deciding to continue brooding over his brains compulsion to go against him after his well needed bath, he left his room without a moment more of hesitance.
Neji had just exited the bath house when he suddenly noticed Hiashi sitting silently on the porch of the compound with a tray of steaming tea next to his idle form. The young Hyuuga could do nothing more than stand their in silence as he starred at the man that he hated so dearly. This was very unusual, usually the other occupants of the compound did not awaken till about eight, and yet here his uncle was already awake and dressed for the day. Considering the mans eyes were closed, Neji decided to simply sneak past the older Hyuuga without a problem, and continue on with his day.
Yet, before he could even take five successful steps forward, he was caught. "Neji."
The boy closed his eyes with slight frustration as he let out a quiet sigh, "hai, Hiashi sama?" For a moment there was silence, Neji was beginning to think that his mind was playing tricks on him now, and perhaps his uncle hadn't actually called to him.
Just as he was thinking that this theory was highly probable, he was proved wrong. "Come, sit. I wish to speak to you over important manners." Not one to tantrum or make a fuss, Neji merely nodded his head as he went to sit on the other side of the tray of tea. They sat in silence for a considerable amount of time, Neji could feel every second that ticked away from his young life as he suddenly became very aware of the sensation of his lungs expanding and deflating at each breath, every swallow of saliva that seemed to become drier and drier. He was one for patience, truly he was, but having to be patient with the very man he despised? Same blood or not, he was losing his mind.
Just when he thought he couldn't take any more there was the sound of a throat clearing. "Your birthday is in a mere few days, Neji." He simply nodded, "you will be a man by then, and will be more than ready to be wed." The boy felt his blood run cold. Marriage? Was his uncle insane? What was this sudden nonsense, and from what he knew, Hiashi wanted Hinata to be wedded first to a husband that would take the family name and continue the lineage. Neji's pearl eyes studied the man well, what was this? His uncles face stony and hard, it appeared that he had finally understood the ridiculousness behind his before plan, and had decided to merely let his nephew be the heir to the Hyuuga clan. It was too simple though, there was more to it there just had to be.
"Marriage? Hiashi sama?"
He stiffly nodded "yes, it is the perfect time, and there are many beautiful women here in Tokyo for you to choose from, those of good families as well." Neji looked forward and merely nodded. None of them appealed to him though. They were nothing more than dolls to look at as they clung to their husbands arms. He wanted more from his wife, he wanted someone strong, independent, self spoken, yet soft and kind, someone like... like..'Tenten...'
He abruptly stood, slightly startling his uncle with the sudden movement. "I apologize Hiashi sama, but I must go and train with Lee. My tardiness would be unacceptable."
It appeared the older Hyuuga was going to say a few final words to him, but when he spoke nothing and merely nodded his head, Neji left in a flurry of white.
Marriage! He was obviously desperate for an heir before he died, but that was still many years away, why is he so impatient? Neji's fist clenched as he walked through the relatively empty streets. And of all the people to pop into his head, why her? He hadn't seen her in ten plus years, how the hell was he suppose to have these types of feeling for a female that he hadn't even seen or spoken too! The only thing he had were the memories from when they were children. They were good memories, yes, but they did not speak of the relationship of young man and woman, not in the least bit. How could his mind come to the conclusion that he wanted her as a wife to begin with! He wanted to see her, more than anything, but marriage had never, entirely, come to his mind when he thought of her. Suddenly though, the idea didn't seem so bad. The thought of a beautiful Tenten being his wife, bearing his child, watching their child grow as they grew old together. That made his future seem promising and brighter than he could have ever imagined, to the point where his own frustrated walking had ceased. And making love to her, to finally be with her in the most intimate way he could ever ima- 'No! No, no, no, no, no. What is wrong with me? Get it together! I don't even know what she looks like or if she's even the same Tenten I once knew, so stop it! You irrational fool.' He sighed as he began walking once again at a much slower pace due to his mentally exhausted state. 'And that dream...' His thoughts raced as he vividly remembered the dream, a violent shiver racked down his spine in an uncomfortable chill. It was already haunting him. Who was screaming? Why? What was happening? And why were they calling for him? So many questions and not a single answer. He sighed in frustration. What confused him the most was that memory of his father. That specific one was simply a random conversation between the two that had no need to be remembered. Even as a boy he understood Tenten's firm independence and strength. He always knew that she could take care of herself, even now he held no...doubt...
He then felt like he had just been hit with a pile of bricks. Realization rushed over him in a cold flood as it all began to make sense and connect. How could he be so careless and stupid, of course it was a possibility! And yet he had completely missed it as if it would never happen. Neji grit his teeth in irritation, how could he be so dense?
"Neji! My dearest friend!" The irked Hyuuga looked up in slight distraction, the moment Lee's large eyes made contact with his friends he immediately felt unease. "Neji? Are you unwell? What troubles you?" Instead of answering he continued to simply to stare not being able to find the words to speak. He had to talk to someone. Someone! Someone who could do something! Stop her, stall, it didn't matter! Just something! "Neji!" Pearl eyes began to clear as they focused on black orbs.
"I.." he stumbled over his next words, what could he say? It was merely a feeling, but it was so strong! He bit his lip for a short moment when it then hit him. 'Shikamaru... maybe he can do something?' Neji straightened himself out as he gave his friend a determined look "I'm sorry Lee but we can't train today, I must go speak with Shikamaru over urgent manners."
Without waiting for a response he turned on his heel and began to make his way through the woods once again when Lee's voice stopped him. "Does it have to do with Tenten?" Neji froze, he couldn't possibly tell Lee, but at the same time...he had a right to know. His voice came again "please Neji, I may have only been around Tenten for a meager week, but it was long enough for me to feel a deep care for her, like a younger sister..." That definitely struck a chord with him, it was the same way he felt about Hinata and Hanabi. They were cousins, but he saw them as little sisters that he had to take care of and protect; not simply because he had too, but because he wanted too.
"Come Lee, we'll go to Shikamaru together."
It took a moment before a grin spread across the bowl cut boys face. "Yosh!" He then took off in a vicious run already leaving Neji behind.
"Ino... Ino.. Ino. Ino!" The blonde jumped as her name was yelled loudly causing her beautiful dream that concerned a certain genius to pop from her mind.
Her wide blue eyes looked directly into green before she immediately relaxed and flopped back down onto the futon, she groaned "Sakura~ I was having a really nice dream..."
The pinkette sighed "baka, you need to get home and get ready for your date with Shikamaru." Ino raised one brow in question as she lazily turned her head to Sakura's clock, it read seven o'clock.
She chuckled as she turned on her side and sighed happily. "Oh Sakura, you really don't know Shikamaru and I at all, do you?"
Sakura blinked in confusion, "what are you talking about?"
She smiled "we're not meeting till one forehead."
Instead of being bothered by the insult she merely brushed it off and continued to question, "one? Why not earlier?"
Ino's words came slurred, " be-cauz niter on of uz liz to wak up ear..." She never finished her sentence with words, but instead with soft snores. Sakura growled at her friends lazyness'well there's one trait they both shared..'
She sighed as she rolled Ino onto the cold hardwood causing a groan to come from the girl once again. "Either way, you need to go home and somehow not get into trouble with your parents while finding something suitable to wear!" The pinkette furiously whispered to the blonde as her desperation was becoming very apparent. What if her parents found Ino? They weren't all too strict, but when things went on behind their back then things wouldn't go well. She grabbed onto the blondes shoulder and shook her, "come on Ino,wake up! If my parents find you who knows what they'll do?"
She sighed as she sat herself up, "fine, fine. I'm up!" She looked around with squinted eyes before yawning and then stretching her arms up high. There were a few pops from her stiff joints before she slowly stood up. She looked down and suddenly a childish pout plumped her pink lips. "My kimonos all wrinkled..."
Sakura stood as well and rolled her eyes, "I told you to take it off last night, but you didn't listen."
Ino continued to pout as she at least tried to fix her now messy ponytail "oh, by the way," Sakura looked at her, "you're still meeting with Sasuke today so don't be lecturing me so much."
Finished fixing her hair Ino looked to the Haruno girl to see a bright pink blush on her flawless cheeks. "I-I had completely forgotten..."
She smirked "mmhmm, of course you did."
Sakura's cheek's became darker "I did!"
"Sure, sure." Sakura growled before hastily pointing to the door "just get out."
She shook her head, Sakura couldn't help but whine as she stomped like a child, "Ino~ You're going to get me in so much trouble!" She was expecting a defiant retort, but did not expect the girl to simply turn on her heel, and head for the window. "Wh-what are you?" She began to boost herself up,"you can't be serious."
"Oh, im serious alright."
"Ino! Why can't you just use the front door like a normal human being!"
"Sh!...listen." They both fell quiet and began to strain their ears.
Sakura jumped as she suddenly heard muffled voices and footsteps, she immediately fell into panic mode. "Oh my God, they're awake!"
"exa-"
"Get out! Get out! Get out!"
Ino's nails dug into the frame of the window as her now hysterical friend was trying to shove her out the window. "Yamete kudasai forehead!"
"Sakura?" The pinkette froze as she whipped her head around to face her door, 'mama...'
"Go pig!" Just as she yelled this her door slid open and Ino fell out the window with a harsh thump. She groaned loudly.
Mrs. Haruno Starred at her daughter, "Sakura?" She whipped around to face her, "What are you doing? And what was that horrid sound?"
"oh um n-nothing mama just um, humming, yes! Just humming." Mrs. Haruno watched her daughter hum in a very deep voice and completely off key to whatever tune she was attempting to recall.
She inwardly cringed at the sound "well, alright.. breakfast is ready, you should bathe and dress before it gets cold." Her daughter merely continued humming and nodded. Mrs. Haruno returned the action before turning around and then stopping, "Oh, and Sakura?"
"hm?"
"Please don't hum or sing, for a minute I thought you were housing a dying boar." And with that she left.
Review please!
