Carlisle watched the sunrise from his office window. He was lost in his thoughts and didn't hear Elizabeth enter the room until she spoke. He heard her soft voice say, "What's wrong, Carlisle?" He sighed, knowing there was no way for him to avoid this conversation. He nodded and then gestured towards the small couch in his office. "Please, sit." She sat and Carlisle sat next to her. Carlisle put his arm around Elizabeth and said, "Your father's trial is set. It will start in a month." Elizabeth nodded, trying to pretend that this did not bother her. Carlisle could see in her eyes that this scared her. Elizabeth said, "I'll have to testify, won't I?" Her voice cracked on the last word. Carlisle said, "Yes, you will. It's the only sure way for your father to be put in jail." Elizabeth nodded and then said, "When will Jasper be coming home?"
Carlisle held his breathe for a moment. He knew Elizabeth would be asking this question. It was one of the thoughts that had plagued him throughout the night. He gave her a smile and said, "I don't know. He didn't tell me." She looked at Carlisle and said, "I wish he was here. He was becoming like a brother to me." Carlisle hugged her and said, "I'm sure he'll be back soon."Elizabeth gave him a quick, tight hug and said, "I should get ready for school." She pushed herself away and walked out of Carlisle's office. Carlisle watched as she left and sighed. He knew she was in great pain. Carlisle gave her some time to herself. While he waited, he began to pace again. Carlisle let ten minutes pass and then he left his office. He walked down the hallway to Elizabeth's room and saw the door partially open. He pushed the door open and said, "Elizabeth?" Carlisle stopped and waited for a response. Elizabeth said nothing but Carlisle heard her crying softly in her bathroom. Carlisle walked into her bathroom and saw Elizabeth on the floor. She held her knees close to her chest while she was slowly rocking back and forth. Carlisle saw a small knife in her hands. He sat down next to her and pulled her arms out towards him. As he looked down, he saw blood running down her wrists. Elizabeth looked at him and said, "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." She started sobbing. Carlisle stood up, pulling her with him. Carlisle walked Elizabeth to the bathroom he and Esme shared but never actually used. They never used it except for days like today. He sat her up on the counter and began washing the dried blood from her wrists. He then wrapped both of them carefully. Elizabeth had stopped sobbing but she was still crying silently. Carlisle gave her a smile and hugged her. Elizabeth hugged him back. Carlisle then said, "I'll call the school. You'll be taking a few days off." Elizabeth nodded.
Carlisle called the school and told them what had happened and that he would be taking Elizabeth to the hospital. They understood. Meanwhile, Elizabeth was still in Carlisle and Esme's bathroom. Carlisle found her staring in the mirror. Carlisle put an arm around her waist and said, "We have to go to the hospital." Elizabeth looked at him with a scared look, "No, I don't want to go." Carlisle smiled and said, "You have to go, at least until we find a medicine that will work." Elizabeth stared at him afraid. "I don't want to go." Carlisle heard the fear and sadness in her voice. It broke his heart to hear this but he stayed strong. He gave her another small smile and said, "My decision is final." Elizabeth nodded and Carlisle put his arm around her waist again. "Shall we go?" Elizabeth nodded and they walked to Carlisle's car. Elizabeth sat down in the passenger's seat and stared ahead. Carlisle drove and after about ten minutes, he said, "It'll be alright. You are going to be fine." Elizabeth shook her head and said, "I should be fine now, but I'm not." Carlisle replied, "It's normal to relapse, especially after everything you have been through." Elizabeth looked at him with a few tears running down her face and said, "Do you promise?" Carlisle nodded and said, "I promise."
