Ch.23: Breakdown

Edward's POV

I was speeding away from the treaty line when I felt my phone vibrate.

Aiyanna couldn't possibly be home yet but I flipped the phone open casually, not looking at the caller id.

"Hello?" I said smoothly.

"Edward, go to her now!" Alice said frantically. "Something isn't right… I keep getting glimpses of something dreadful and her future is blacking out!"

I clutched the steering wheel – hanging my phone up and tossing it into the passenger's seat, and turned around towards the treaty line. What if the puppy lost his temper and really hurt her, I had to get to her as fast as I could. When I arrived at the treaty line, I climbed out of the car and slammed the door loudly running as fast as I could; using Aiyanna's scent to find her house.

As I approached the little house Aiyanna's scent stopped at, Jacob Black's stench hit me so strongly it completely drowned Aiyanna's.

"Who…have…you…been…with…" An angry voice said slowly. "I can smell a hint of Kevin on you which means he imprinted on you, confirming our speculations. The smell of vampires is so strong it's burning my nostrils however; it smells…familiar."

I grit my teeth at the mentioning of Kevin's imprint and the voice was Jacob's nonetheless.

"Aiyanna, answer him please stop with the secrets." A sweet familiar voice pleaded; Bella.

I began to feel my chest tighten in pain when I realized I would have to come face to face with Bella. I imagined Aiyanna helplessly backed into a corner and I decided to step up and finally take some initiative to make things right. I lightly knocked on the door and I heard a sigh.

"Answer it," Jacob said quietly.

Anticipation was eating its way into my mind when the door finally opened up and I saw Aiyanna's shocked expression.

"Perhaps I can shed some light on the situation," I said wryly.

I was trying as hard as I could not to look away from Aiyanna and towards the place where a familiar gasp came from.

"Edward, what are you doing here?" Aiyanna asked; fear written in her eyes.

I began to hear a heartbeat I knew all too well become very slow and I glanced up quickly to see Bella passing out; catching her in my marble arms. I began to hear Jacob's thoughts become very angered.

"Outside leech!" he growled. "Get your hands off my wife!"

"I was simply protecting her from falling on the broken glass. I would never touch something that is not mine," I said; I regretted giving him the wrong idea.

I sat her down gently in a chair and couldn't help but take in her new features. She still looked somewhat the same, but her face had matured; she had aged beautifully. I began to hear Jacob's spiteful thoughts rattle in the back of my mind so I backed away.

"I said get outside!" He growled again.

"Dad, please don't hurt him," Aiyanna pleaded; grabbing onto his arm. "I love him…"

His mind became utterly repulsed at the idea of her infatuation for me and he dismissed her lightly. He ran outside and I was right on his heels.

"Stay inside Aiyanna Renee, look after your mother!" He shouted at her; taking off into the trees.

As I approached him swiftly from behind I felt his burning fist strike me in the face without even a warning from his thoughts.

"You lose your chance with my wife and now you go after our daughter!" He yelled. "I will not let Aiyanna be with your kind!"

I got up – sadness enveloping me because of his words, and I dusted myself off lightly.

"Jacob Black, I will not fight you." I said slowly. "I will not let your daughter go either. What I did to Bella was wrong and I fully accept the consequences for my actions, but I love Aiyanna and I will not live without her. She is in danger and I need to speak with you."

"You can die then bloodsucker because she will NEVER be with you!" He shouted angrily.

He quickly phased into a werewolf – pouncing on me menacingly, and hurled us through three trees growling.

Fight back leech! He bellowed in his mind.

I wanted to rip him apart more than anything, but the thought of hurting Aiyanna and Bella kept me from doing so.

"I will not hurt Bella again and I will never hurt Aiyanna" I hissed. "We have a problem and I need to talk to you right away; Aiyanna is in danger!"

Why should I believe the likes of you! He growled.

The bloodsucker is telling the truth. Kevin's thought piped in at the perfect time.

Kevin thought about the meeting at the house and I began to feel Jacob's thoughts soften slightly in astonishment.

A vampire whose mate tried to murder Bella is after Aiyanna? He thought quietly.

"Yes, and we need to work together to bring her down because her future accomplice is too powerful for your pack and my coven to not work together." I answered.

I see that through Kevin's thoughts. He retorted.

He began debating about working with us, but Aiyanna's well being was his one and only concern.

"I would never hurt her Jacob, I love her." I whispered. "She will be in good hands at school and you can protect her when she is not."

Your hands are far from good. He thought angrily. Bella is still in pain because of what you did to her and I refuse to let my daughter mingle with your kind.

"Please Jacob, let me protect her." I pleaded. "If you refuse me, I will still protect her against your wishes."

Kevin appeared from the trees and took his place next to Jacob; his depressing thoughts pressing both of us.

I don't like you bloodsucker. Kevin thought quietly. But Aiyanna is safe in his hands. His family is kind – with the exception of the blonde psycho chick, and I hate to admit it but I do trust them.

I internally smirked at him calling Rosalie a psycho, sometimes she really was one. Jacob's pacing and internal conflict pulled me away from my own thoughts.

As you may know Edward I am the alpha now. I will work with the pack and try to convince them to work with you, but you are not to be on our land. I will not force anyone to work with you guys. Jacob thought angrily. I do not trust you at all, but I will have faith in Kevin's word; for now.

Jacob took off running back towards the edge of the forest to get back to Bella. Kevin and I were right behind him and when they were both back to being humans, Jacob turned to us.

"You two can stay outside," He said quietly "Bella is probably freaking out and I want you to keep an eye on the leech."

Jacob walked into the house and shut the door abruptly.

"You know, I really hate you…" Kevin said; sitting down on the ground as he spoke. "What exactly happened between you and Aiyanna's mother?"

I sighed heavily and paced back and forth.

"I'd really prefer not to discuss my previous love life tragedies with you pup." I stated flatly.

"Is there not a nice bone in your body bloodsucker?" He asked harshly; his body shaking. "I stand up for you and your stupid leech relatives in front of Jacob, my alpha dog, and you're nothing but rude about a question."

I immediately regretted my tone with him because he was right; he did stick up for me.

"I'm sorry this is just a nightmare for me." I replied solemnly, "nineteen years ago I fell in love with Bella Swan and she was my world, but tragedy struck us. An accident happened and she bled at a birthday party we had for her. My brother, Jasper, is the most recent to be turned and he tried to attack her. Naturally, I felt like it was in her best interest if we left and made it seem like we never existed."

"Well it would be in every human's best interest if you guys didn't exist…" Kevin whispered.

"You think I don't know that mutt?" I shouted.

I was trying to tell him a story and he was the one being rude at this point. Kevin stood up slowly – regaining his composure, and I heard the front door opening. I looked up to see Bella stomping towards me, and my face grew sad.

"You…me…forest…now…" she said softly.

Her facial expression was one that was hard to read and I still couldn't read her mind of course. Suddenly, Aiyanna took off into the forest crying and I wanted nothing more than to take her into my arms and comfort her, but as I turned to go after her I felt Bella's small, warm hand grip my arm tightly.

"Kevin, go after Aiyanna and make sure she's alright." Jacob said angrily.

He was mad that Bella was touching me.

Have fun bloodsucker. Kevin thought.

Kevin's mind was littered with thoughts of hugging and maybe even kissing Aiyanna; a growl escaping my throat at that thought.

"You don't want to talk…" Bella whispered sadly.

I snapped my head in Bella's direction – backing away from her slowly, and I felt my eyes burning from the lack of tears.

"It's not that Bella." I said quietly. "I just wanted to be the one to comfort Aiyanna."

"You didn't want me!" Bella shouted quickly. "You didn't comfort me!"

I turned away from her because the pain I had caused her was more than evident and I couldn't handle it. Jacob grabbed her hand and pulled her into his arms tightly, but Bella pounded her fists against his chest like a child throwing a tantrum.

"You let me go Jake!" she cried. "I want to hear him speak!"

Jacob's thoughts became enraged and hurt more than anything.

"Well, by all means…I'll leave you two alone." He said outraged.

He released her harshly and ran into the forest; phasing into his wolf form. I felt Bella's eyes burning into the back of my head and I swallowed loudly.

"Why are you back Ed…Edward..Cu…Cullen?" She asked. "Why?"

She was trying so hard to choke out my name because I had hurt her so much.

"Carlisle missed forks," I answered softly.

"Oh, I see…" She said; staring down at the ground. "No other reason?"

I stepped quickly to her side and placed my hands on her shoulders; her body shuddered.

"Bella, I told you it would be as if I never existed. Leaving you hurt me more than anything I've ever done, but I only came back for Carlisle's sake." I said slowly; her face growing more and more upset. "I watched you exchange vows with Jacob when I came to make sure you were doing alright when I wasn't. It felt like a hot blade had been shoved into my cold heart, like I had ripped open some sort of internal wound."

She inhaled sharply and looked up at me with tears in her eyes.

"Jacob!" She cried. "Oh my, he must hate me!"

"Hush Bella, he does not hate you." I cooed softly. "He's just upset because he hates me being around you. He is scared that you'll fall in love with me again, or desire to join my kind."

She laughed hysterically – clearly she wasn't totally back to normal yet, and then she plopped down on the grass.

"I'm thirty-six years old," she whispered. "I don't want to live forever now; I'm not young or pretty enough. Besides, I'm happily married with a wonderful daughter."

"Never say you aren't pretty Bella Sw…Black." I corrected myself quickly, "and your daughter is wonderful."

She stood up – her face changing, and she looked me in the eyes.

"Wait…how do you know Aiyanna?" She said questioningly.

"Forks High, she reminded me so much of you it felt like I was experiencing everything all over again," I replied. "Aiyanna is slightly different though, I love it."

"I see…" She whispered again. "So you…love her?"

"Yes Bella, with my entire existence," I answered softly. "She is all I think about. I can't read her mind as well."

She laughed weakly at the last part and looked at me with sad eyes.

"Edward, I think I have finally realized that I'm over you." She said. "I think that I didn't want to let go of you because I was scared that everything that happened wasn't real; I needed you to be real."

She began weeping and I hugged her gently.

"Bella, a place in my heart will always be yours," I said quietly.

I kissed the top of her head lightly and she smiled slightly; it felt great to mend things with her.

Bella's POV

I hated feeling like I had no control over this breakdown.

As he kissed the top of my head I felt my heart race and for the first time in a while, things felt…better. I would always love him deep down, but Jacob had my heart completely now.

"Edward, you know that I don't really want Aiyanna to become one of you though." I said; releasing myself from his embrace as I spoke. "I don't think I could handle that."

He looked at me – his facial expression becoming hurt, and then he backed away slowly.

"Well, I could never do that to anyone Bella." He answered. "There is something you need to know though…"

I felt my chest tighten and I began to feel a little dizzy; this day held too many things already.

"What?" I asked; holding my breath.

"Victoria is back," He said solemnly.

I inhaled sharply and felt my knees grow weak – my head raced, and I sat down quickly.

"Victoria?" I choked out. "Why?"

I thought back to a time when one of her former coven members Laurent had tried to attack me, but the werewolves killed him.

"She's after Aiyanna," He whispered. "She's trying to get back at both of us for my family killing James."

"Laurent said she was planning on killing me!" I shouted. "He said me, please not Aiyanna…I don't understand…"

"Victoria assumed that I didn't love you anymore because I never came back," He said. "She waited nineteen years to find someway to hurt us, and now she has it; Aiyanna."

I felt the tears stinging my eyes and I sobbed loudly.

"You guys can handle her right?" I sobbed. "The pack can handle her too."

His face darkened and I saw a frown tug at his lips.

"It's more complicated than that Bella," He replied; pacing as he spoke. "Do you remember me telling you about the Volturi?"

I gulped loudly and nodded my head – thinking back to the tour of Carlisle's study with the paintings I vaguely remembered, and I tried to calm myself down.

"She has recruited the help of a very powerful half-human, half-vampire, whose father is the head of the Volturi; Aro." He said slowly; allowing me to take it all in. "He has the power of persuasion, among other gifts unknown to us, and he's said to be pretty strong."

"He has the power of persuasion?" I asked confused.

"He can persuade humans, and vampires, to do whatever he wants them to using is mind." Edward answered quickly.

My eyes widened in realization; they were actually scared.

"You guys are scared of him…" I said.

He nodded his head quietly and then looked at me.

"I will do everything in my power to make sure Aiyanna is safe again," He said; his eyes burning into mine. "I won't let them touch her."

His statement made me feel like I was traveling back in time when James was after me; I believed him.

"I trust you Edward," I whispered. "I know you will keep her safe."

"It's just Jacob who needs to warm up to me," He chuckled lightly.

"Jake's a great man, but good luck with that." I replied. "I'll see what I can do, but no promises on my end."

He laughed loudly but stopped abruptly.

"Something is not right," He whispered slowly.

He got up quickly and ran to the trees – his eyes completely black, and then he turned towards me.

"I smell something…something delicious...something has happened," He hissed. "Blood, a lot of it."

He stalked towards me and I began to feel my heart rate increase. I noticed something rustling in the bushes and Edward's head snapped in the same direction. Kevin came out carrying Aiyanna's limp body and she was covered in blood – a huge scrape on her head, and I screamed.

"Aiyanna!" I cried; running to her as I spoke. "What happened to her Kevin?"

"I was telling her about my imprint and she freaked out," Kevin said frantically. "I tried to explain it to her but she was so upset, she tried to run out of the forest and tripped; that's why she's bleeding."

"You idiotic mongrel," Edward growled deeply, "She wasn't ready for your silly little imprint!"

Kevin set Aiyanna on the ground gently – his whole body shaking fiercely, and he crouched down.

"My imprint is stronger than your blood lust you monster!" He yelled. "I will always love Aiyanna more than you!"

I ripped a piece of cloth from my brown capris off and placed it to Aiyanna's head to absorb some of the blood.

"Boys, please stop it!" I screamed. "She needs help!"

Edward fidgeted wildly and his eyes were black as night.

"I'll run her to Billy's," Kevin said. "This is something the big bad bloodsucker can't handle."

Edward hissed menacingly and pounced at Kevin – dirt and rocks flying everywhere as their bodies hit the ground, and he hovered over Kevin's neck with his teeth exposed.

"I have some control unlike you dog!" Edward hissed. "You phase every time your temper gets the best of you!"

"You still haven't eaten yet, right leech?" Kevin growled.

Edward got up slowly and dusted himself off – glancing at Aiyanna and I, and then he jumped backwards a good distance.

"I'll go retrieve Jacob," he growled. "Dog, don't get any ideas!"

He ran quickly into the forest and Kevin got up and cradled Aiyanna once more.

"She's losing her color Kevin…" I whispered. "Please get her to Billy's quickly."

"Don't worry," Kevin said. "I'll get here there in no time."

Kevin took off as fast as he could in the direction of Billy's house and I felt my knees finally give out on me; collapsing to the ground as the breakdown came again.
