I returned to the tent with an empty feeling in my stomach. Knowing that you're under the constant suspicion is harder than you might be thinking. Infiltration is putting everything into a bet and you'll never know what might happen.
So many stuff to deal with by the moment. Ugh, not the best career choice for sure. I wonder, maybe if I had never met my brother then my life would have been any better. Without an Earl to protect, without demons or grim reapers and without questioning who the fuck I was.
Too late to retract myself. This sucks.
I threw myself onto the bed and screamed onto the pillow. I still couldn't tell if I hated or liked this job. Is any of this fucking worth it?!
"Ah, so it was you who I was rooming with last night!"
I lifted my head from the pillow and peeked slightly. There it was Ciel next to a freckled boy-no wait, it's a girl. I gave a small wave in a greet and put my head back on the pillow. I wasn't in the mood. I wasn't in the mood to get up and give a greeting, I wasn't in the mood to change clothes…I wanted all of this end soon get back home with Phantom, Pluto and my three dorky servants. And Tanaka, of course.
"Uh? What's with him? The rest of the time he's all a bundle of joy." The unknown girl muttered. "So, can I take the top bed?"
I heard the cracking of the wood as she climbed up. Now that I had noticed. These tents are supposed to fit a max of three people but at the moment there were only two beds available.
"Be my guest. I fancied the bottom one, myself. Oh, but, it's already occupied-"
I gave a sigh and got up. I pointed with my thumb the bed, but Ciel surprised me when he rose a hand in denial.
"You had it first, I don't want to take it from you.".
"It's just a bed. Tomorrow I'll have one of my own so I don't mind sleeping on the floor one more time. Before you say anything else, I swear I won't get in that bed. If you want to sleep on the floor too, go ahead, but that bed will remain empty." I declared lying on the floor using my other set of clothes as a pillow.
"B-but I-! All right…"Ciel surrendered fast as he saw how serious I was being.
David had made a point. I couldn't change Ciel in a few days. I couldn't be too rough with him even if I wanted. I couldn't let him sleep on the floor, I mean, he had asthma and neither I wanted him to hurt his back. Ugh, I was too soft with him. My brother was a softie for me too but he could be stern. I cannot equal him in that balance. I will never be as soft with Ciel like he was with me, neither I'll be able to be that stern. The brat shall remain like he is, then.
"I've been noticing all day-you two speak very proper English. And you, Luck, have a slight Irish accent." The girl asked suddenly and I lifted a bit my arm from over my eyes to see.
"Do we? Well, I've been in service most of my life, so perhaps that's why." Ciel answered and they both turned to me.
I gave a shrug and I lifted myself a bit since this conversation would go for a while. Time to make up more information…
"The boss was Irish and quite the rich guy. He kind of 'adopted' me, but more like when you get a mule to cultivate a field way. You make sure the animal is alive and in return it works for you. I guess his way of speech rubbed onto me." I explained trying to sound casual so it wouldn't be noticeable that I was just making it up as I kept speaking.
"Oh? Well, ask me any circus questions! I've been doing this longer than you two." She stated cheerfully.
"All right." Ciel agreed but I could tell that he didn't give a single fuck about the circus neither anybody.
"Ah, I know." The girl suddenly realized something and searched through her bag, pulling out what I identified very quickly. (Oh, the holy irony) " I'll give you one of these to celebrate us meeting. Top-of-the-line Funtom sweets. They're all the rage! There's caramel, milk and strawberry. Which do you want?"
She offered the sweets with a friendly smile and I hid a laugh with a cough at the situation. Ciel's very own products. I found it very nice of her to share sweets just because we met. That only made my suspicion on the circus lower. I mean, everyone was particularly nice. Peter, well…he didn't look like a threat to anybody. He was just a grumpy guy with growth problems and enough intelligence to doubt of strangers arrivals.
"Caramel, then…"Ciel said picking one awkwardly.
"Luck, which one?" She asked and I rose my hand.
"The milk one, please. Toss it!" I called and I caught it in mid air.
Eyeing the sweet with a smirk I unwrapped it and put it in my mouth. I never had many chances to eat candy. I was more in the side of cookies, and baked stuff, tough, these were great! I leant back on the floor with content and I heard her laugh.
"Now, that's more like the Luck I heard about."
"Heard about? What? Am I popular or something?" I asked in confusion
"You helped catch a tiger with a limp leg. Everyone thinks you're nuts." She said like it was no big deal and I pulled out the candy of my mouth with a fake scowl.
"That isn't very nice! How offensive! I'm not nuts-why is the candle staring at me?"
"Ha, ha! Joker also told me you tend to laugh at your own flaws." She smiled and I gave one of my own.
"A broken mirror can't be put back together by crying over it, don't you think?" I answered.
"That's true. Very true." Ciel agreed and I could see him getting into that dark mood which I never liked.
"Guys, training might be rough, but do your best." Our tent partner told us. "If you do your job right, you won't get yelled at or punched, and you can eat as many sweets and biscuits as you want."
At that I frowned. Yelled or punched? I hadn't seen any type of punishment between the circus members…What did she mean? I preferred to not dig into a touchy subject like that. With that I put an arm over my eyes to block the light coming from the lantern.
"Well, we should go to sleep, don't you think? It's pretty late." I suggested.
I finished the candy quickly and threw the stick in a corner. Still, I didn't sleep immediately after the light was off. It had to be the sugar and the many thoughts roaming my head. My job, my brother, who was after me, the mission, Ciel, Violet, my possible 'nephew'…I just couldn't help but roll from side to side. Sleeping on the floor didn't help at all.
"Luck, stop making so much noise!" Ciel complained in a shushed voice and I glared at him.
"Hey, I gave my bed to you so shut it!" I replied in the same tone.
"I insisted that you could keep it!"
"You wouldn't be able to sleep on the floor even if I pointed a gun at you. I'm having a bad night, that's all!"
"Try to have a bad night in silence, will you?!"
"I can't! My back and brain hurts!"
"What do you want then?!"
"A damn bed!"
"Then keep it!"
"You're sleeping on it!"
Don't ask how, or how long did it take, but yeah…I can say I slept with my boss. NOT IN THAT WAY! Sebastian would in that way, but not me! My sleeping problem was solved which was great.
"Hey, hey, wake up you two!" Someone shook us awake and I groaned in discomfort.
"Angel, just five more minutes…"
"Sebastian…"
"What are you two talking about?! Wake up!" The voice kept pressing and it clicked.
I stirred up with a yawn finally awake. My vertebral column popped up like a champagne bottle being opened. Woho! There we go! Nothing like cracking bones in the morning to start another day.
First thing I noticed was the baby koala clinging onto my waist. Cute. Second thing I noticed was the lack of his eye patch. He was still in a dreamy state so I quickly snatched it and placed it on his hand at the same time I pinched his side to wake him up for good. He gave a yelp and I got up, once again, unaware of my leg. I saw myself onto the ground but our new friend helped me to catch my balance in time, even if I was a tad taller. I was taller than somebody! Hurray!
"Watch out! Getting bonked in the head isn't going to get you away from duty! The newcomers have to get up early and prepare breakfast."
Thankfully, my little incident gave Ciel enough time to tie his eye patch over the symbol. Good safe. I regretted not having changed my clothes last night. Now it felt weird to walk around with them. Also I couldn't help but notice the way Ciel had tied the strings. Did he even know how to tie his own shoelaces?
"Be on your way. We'll catch up in a second." I told her and she nodded.
I peeked from the inside of the tent. Once I made sure she was gone I turned to Ciel and signed him to turn around. He complied as I started to untie the messy knot he had made.
"I'm going to teach you how to do it so you don't come up with the same problem. Hold this tip, all right?"
"Can't you just do it?" He suggested annoyed and I clicked my tongue.
"Stop whining and learn."
I thought him how to properly do it, even if he didn't felt pleased for doing so. One thing I didn't do was help him how to get dressed. Once done, cane in hand, we headed to prepare breakfast. Ciel wasn't in a very good mood for he had been awakened pretty early for his schedule. I, on the other hand, was because my sleep was invaded by nightmares which I couldn't remember.
"Smile, what in the world are you doing?" I face-palmed as I saw how he was peeling the potatoes.
"What? Is it wrong?" He asked confused and I sat beside him, snatching the knife from his hands.
"You must do it like this, understand? That way nothing is wasted. And be careful with the knife, I don't want you to get cut." I explained and handed back the knife to him.
"What's gotten into you lately, A-Luck?" He quickly corrected himself. "You keep treating me like a kid!"
"You're still a kid and you still have the knowledge of a kid. Honestly, you can run a company but can't tie a knot? I'm doing this so you can be a little more independent. Having someone to dress you when you know how to, is a luxury, but when you don't know, is just still being like an useless baby. So stop being a spoiled brat and start doing things on your own, understood?" I advised him pointing him with my own knife.
He shut his mouth. For a good while, we kept peeling potatoes in silence. I made sure he didn't screw up. David seemed pretty quiet today. He doesn't talk much after his 'confession'. I still couldn't believe that he had fallen in love with a human back then. It was, strange to say at least. We're talking about two different species. It's true that they could talk, think…If a cow talked and thought could someone fall in love with it and be all right? No, what am I saying? David is not a cow. He is a demon….I can't tell what's worse. Ah, think straight. Demons and humans are more related than humans and cows. They could take our shape after all. But what if the cow could take the shape of a human? What the fuck am I thinking?!
"Damn-Blast it! Fuck!" I exclaimed when I cut through the gloves I wore, clenching my fist in pain.
"Are you alright?" Ciel asked concerned.
"Yeah. I've suffered worst than that, just a scratch." I hissed as I stared at the gash in my skin. "I'll have to get a new pair."
I couldn't take them off at the moment. That tattoo stopped me for doing so. I licked the blood from the injure carefully and closed my fist. It stung a lot. I hoped it wouldn't get infected. Sebastian passed by and raised an eyebrow surprised.
"I didn't expect you to do this properly, even though you still can't dress by yourself." He pointed out and Ciel twitched.
"I was in a hurry."
"Have you hurt your hand once again, Luck?" He asked as he probably smelt the blood from where he was, that fucking vampire…
"Is nothing but a scratch."
The demon decided to use the potatoes we both peeled to make fish and chips. Everyone loved the idea. I didn't care too much along as I got to eat. The smell of food being cooked would make anyone hungry. Also, it was pretty chill that morning. I looked at Ciel and I could notice him shivering a few times. Sister instinct's taking over, once again.
"Do you want me to fetch you a jacket or something?" I asked and he shook his head.
"No, no. It's alright." He reassured. "By the way…How are you doing?"
"Pretty fine, I guess." I shrugged but he insisted.
"Not like that. How are you actually doing?" He pressed and I rubbed my eyes with my index and thumb.
"I'm still confused about everything. The case is pretty stressful and, you know, having to play another role can be a bother. And you, how are you doing?"
"I miss the manor. I can't stand this work, it's not right for me. I don't think I'll get used to it. I only want it to end already so we can all go home." He huffed.
I expected that reaction for him. What I didn't expect was him to be so sincere with me about it. Glad we could get close enough to share our thoughts. It was relieving to have somebody else to share your feelings. Being alone with yourself is the worst thing ever. I gave him a squeeze on the shoulder and a smile.
"We'll be back home before you even notice. I'll steal one of Sebastian's cream cakes when he's not looking and have a sleepover, how does that sound?" I joked and he looked up with a smug smirk.
"Don't get accustomed to sleeping with me, it was a onetime situation. Just don't tell Lizzy." He placed his finger over his lips and I gave him a slight shove.
"Please, you're the one who enjoyed it the most. Wait, if we count David would it be a threesome?"
Ciel coughed, choking on his own spit while I burst out laughing. People looked at us weirdly. I probably raised my nuts reputation a thirty percent more. I looked down at him with a grin still splitting my face as he blushed, but I could tell he was amused. Glad, I could cheer him up for once, we kept working, until our tent partner grabbed us by the arm announcing that food was ready. Oh, crap, here we go.
WHOOOS!
"OUTTA ME BLOODY WAY!"
Not even a horse would have reached such speed. She dragged us through the line so we were almost the first ones to get food in our plates. Ciel and I sat at the table still a bit dizzy from all the dragging and with only a piece of bread in our plates. I rubbed my knee feeling it sting up a little bit. I didn't know how, but that little mother fucker had gotten her plate full. Damn, proof she knew a lot more about this stuff than us. She willingly shared food with us saying we still had to grow.
"This guy, sure, but I think I'm stuck like this. The only thing which will grow will probably be my stomach. Bloody hell, this is good." I started eating at a fast pace out of habit.
"Black's cooking is brilliant!" She exclaimed tasting for the first time the demon's dishes. (You have no idea, darling.)
"Smile, eat quickly or we'll leave you behind." I hurried Ciel for I was almost finished and he looked between both of our plates.
"The heck?! How fast!"
"A soldier has to eat fast, no one knows when he'll get attacked, you know?" I winked at Ciel as I finished by gulping down all the water in my glass. "Done!"
"You beat me?! Do you even munch your food?!" She awed and I gave a laugh. "Well, I'm also done! Come on, Smile, we've got to practice. See you around, Luck!"
"Already?!" Ciel said half-way through his food. "W-wait for me!"
I gave a small wave in goodbye and rushed to find Joker, or anybody who would need my services. In the way I crossed my path with Peter and Wendy. He gave me a cold stare. Wow, he surely wasn't going to let go of his suspicion easily. I finally found the ring-leader around. I called to him with a whistle and a wave.
"What's in today's schedule, boss?" I asked and he chuckled.
"Don't call me boss, we're partners, all right? For today, everything seems to be okay-what happened to your hand, Luck?" He noticed and I closed my fist and tensed.
"Just a cut with a knife, nothing too bad."
Crap, crap, crap. He saw. If he takes off my glove he'll see the tattoo. I don't know how would I explain it! Besides, if whoever was chasing me sees it, my cover will be blown away. Joker stared down at me for a while, but he just flicked my forehead.
"Be careful next time. If you think you should, go to see Doc. He still hasn't got the stuff for surgery ready, by the way. It'll take more time. I don't know what you should do…Boy, I don't want you to be around doing nothing…" He hummed and I stood there with my hand tight closed. "I honestly don't know!"
"I could go to the training area, see if anyone needs help."
"Good plan. Be careful, Luck and this time try not to faint." He ordered and I gave a firm nod as an answer.
I wanted to keep an eye on Ciel and Sebastian. But also on William. I had no idea why was he here but it made me feel uneasy. It's like a big signal which read: Death incoming. David still hasn't made any attempt at contacting me. I guess he needed some time alone. He had already let everything out, so there was no problem. At the training area I saw everyone making amazing acrobatics and spectacles, Suit and Black being the major show displayed. Were they competing to see which one was better? Just like kids…The mere thought of them actually sharing a tent made me want to laugh.
"Hey, Luck! You should move away from where you are." Beast advised to me and I blinked confused.
"Why?"
ROAR!
"Sweet baby Jesus!" I exclaimed when two heavy paws landed on my shoulders. "Aaaaah, oh my god, oh my god!"
Everyone around me started to laugh when Betty grabbed me and proceed to lick my neck and the back of my head. That tongue felt like sand paper and it hurt! I was also very well aware of those gigantic, never groomed, freaking claws! Beast came towards me, lifted those claws off me and I proceed to make what I called my 'trauma dance'. It was a mixture of trying to run away, tripping combined with shivers and freak out.
"Chill out, she's not going to hurt you or anything while I'm around." Beast laughed as she scratched the tiger's chin through the jail bars. "Are you alright?"
"Besides needing another set of underwear and smelling of tiger, then yes! Yes, I'm perfectly fine!" I hid the high-pitched squeal I was about to make to replace it with a sarcastic remark. "Help me out, please."
I tended my good hand and she pulled me up. I gave a thankful smile and the next thing I knew, Dagger was by my side holding his knifes with contained rage.
"Luck…"He trailed off. "I'm keeping an eye on you…Stay away from Big Sis, I saw her first."
"Whoa, calm down! I'm not interested in courting her. All yours. Like she would go out with the crazy Irish lame boy. " I scoffed and he gave a snicker.
"Betty seems pretty interested in you though. Want to give her a kiss?" He gave a devious smirk.
He suddenly grabbed me by the torso and started to pull me towards the jail again. I squirmed around and got out of his grip, running away the best I could but losing my hat in the process. I hid behind Jumbo, who looked at us with a soft smile. I held a smile of victory as Dagger groaned.
"Not fair! You can't use Jumbo as a shield!"
"Yes, I can, because he's my friend too! We're friends, right?" I asked unsure peeking from behind him and he gave a nod. "Take that!"
"Stop playing, you two and get back to work!" Beast threatened cracking her whip.
We both gulped and he resumed with his knife throwing. Yet, he gave me a look signaling that he wasn't over. Along he didn't get any of Snake's friends in my trousers, then it'll be okay. There was hardly anything to do. I checked some of the poles, making sure they wouldn't fall and cause an accident. Beast even asked me to oil a bit the joints of the jail's door. Did she want to get rid of me?! Or did Dagger ask her to do so?!
"Here." She said and placed the hat on top of my head adjusting more tightly than necessary just to mess with me. "Don't lose it again."
"Ow, ow, ow! Don't kill the only brain cells that remain, geez!" I moaned in pain taking it off and rubbing the sides of my head which now itched because the friction.
"I thought you'd lost every one of them. Anyways, when was the last time you took a shower? Because somebody has a very strong smell." She commented with a grimace.
I frowned. I pulled on my jacket and sniffed. I scrunched up my nose in disgust. Yep, that was three days sweat, grease, iron and last but not last:
"Blasted Betty, she has marked me as her bitch!"
Author Note: Thank you all for reading and I hope you have a great day! Even if holidays are over, we still have more chapters ready so be alert for more incoming updates!
omgitsanimegamer: That's something I've been thinking and I'll probably follow the anime line with my own additions to it. I'm still debating if I should do second season too. What do you all thinK?
feather flyer: Well...that...uh...It's been a very, very long time since I last wrote something for it, I know. I was more centered in the others rather than that one, so I had lost interest in it for a long while. I thought that other's had lost interest on it too and I kind of left it aside, hoping one day I'd have my inspiration back. I also feel the need to rewrite it, I'm not too happy with how I wrote the first chapters.
So, here's my offer and this is fo EVERYONE interested in my Harry Potter fanfiction: Would you want me to start it over, with a much better content? That way, I don't know, I'll probably be more inspired to write chapters for it again. Thanks for caring! :3
