Chapter 23
I didn't sleep. Everything was black, like my vision was swimming in black oil. I couldn't do anything; I was just not really there. I felt dead, but… I couldn't be.
I could hear voices and I recognized them as my friends' voices. They sounded worried and it made me feel guilty. Why did I faint actually?
Oh, yeah, I remember. I saw my kids, my future kids to be exact. It was a weird feeling knowing that I may have a nice future with the guy I liked, no, like was not enough to express my feelings.
"Dude! She's waking!" Connor whispered.
I felt like someone was facing me closely. "No," Travis decided. "She's only stirring."
"Man, that future kids thing really jarred her."
"Same with Will. That guy have been moping around like a puppy deciding wheatear not he should be happy."
"He's happy, Trav," Connor muttered. "But I guess it's a lot to… take in."
"But dude, seriously, their daughters were hot. I mean like Aphrodite hot! Did you see Chloe's face and Jaz's eyes?"
Connor laughed. "They're pretty, but Will may be around here, so don't act like a lovesick puppy, okay?"
As pleased I would that people liked my daughters, I didn't really like that people were staring at them like that. The black vision was getting lighter; it was crack of light showing. It felt like I was going through layers of weave. The crack got bigger and my eyelids felt really heavy, like the skin was of steel.
I groaned, rubbing my eyes. I felt like the living dead, my head was constantly aching of pain, which may be a sign that I hit my head towards the floor before I turned off. My body was heavy too; every move I took made me wince.
"Lex!" Travis said in surprise. "You're awake!"
I tried to move. "Yeah," I said, acting a surprise. "I didn't know."
"You're okay?" Connor asked.
I nodded slowly. Why did I feel so bad? "I'll manage," I croaked. "What happened exactly?"
They told me the whole story. After I fainted, Will had gone around Olympus in some kind of I-saw-the-future-this-is-much-to-take stroll. I got carried into the infirmary, which I felt kind of silly about. The gods decided to spare me and they went their separate ways. My dad was still on Olympus warning the others about his war. So yeah, everything was pretty normal.
I looked around. I was sitting in a comfy bed, shelves with godly medicines were hanging on the wall and the fresh smell of bandages and medicines was still there.
It reminded of the first time I met Will. It felt so long ago, so many things happened. It made me think over how much already changed from when I was thirteen. I was an unknowing demigod and Will was the one who helped me. I just ran away from the mortal world, arriving in Camp Half-Blood. It was a good memory though.
I hesitated, "And Will? He's okay?"
They both nodded. "He just needs some chill time, and then he will be fine, I hope," Connor said.
I nodded. "Okay, so I will-"
"Am I interrupting?" Poseidon asked holding his trident. My dad looked worn out and worried. He looked like he aged maybe 5 years, it wasn't so noticeable, but I could still see it. I wondered if it was because of me or the war.
It felt nervous; I never had a real conversation with him. But I should thank him, if it wasn't for him I would be Oceanus's wife.
Travis gathered himself. "No!" he said. "Take your time, Lord Poseidon!"
They shuffled hurriedly out. Poseidon managed a brittle laugh. "Ah, sons of Hermes… always funny and with a good heart. Reminds me of their father, you healed well?"
I nodded. "You know, down there I almost, well…-"
"Got married?"
"Yeah," I said. "I just want to say without you-"
"You're thanking me. I gladly accept it."
I felt relieved. "Thanks, it's just-"
Poseidon laughed and this time a real one. "I learned that my children have a certain grudge at me, Perseus was angry but he kept it in himself. I am very sure that you also have not so- ah warm feelings."
I racked my brain for what I was going to say. I couldn't say: Yup. That's right. As much that I wanted to yell at him, I knew that it wasn't going to play along well.
I said, "Why did you never visit me?"
He fiddled with his trident like it was a toy. It was kind of weird, but I didn't complain. "I visited Percy when he was younger and right after the visit I discovered that it was already many monsters after him at such young age."
I felt like my heart was turning colder, maybe so much that it pained. I knew it was early to think about favorites, but it was so… obvious. Poseidon favored Percy. They looked so much alike, Percy was blessed with so many powers, and he even visited him. Maybe he never wanted a daughter; maybe he didn't even like me. He never visited me, he didn't even send me a little dollar bill so I could afford food when I was at the streets.
I let out a small, "Oh."
He looked at me; his eyes were misty like he just read my thoughts. I hope he didn't. "I wanted to visit you," Poseidon said. "But I was afraid of the monsters that may attack you. It didn't help that Sasha lived in California right where Hades were."
"So why… didn't you tell her to move?"
He looked miserable. It looked like someone just killed a fish right in front of him. "She was stubborn," he said. "She said that there was an opportunity waiting for her."
I fought back a sob. "L-Like that model job?"
He pursed his lips. "Maybe. But remember, your mother wasn't always like that. She was beautiful, smart and kind. She really cared for others, but I'm afraid that she may have gotten a little bit… out after I said that I was waiting for another child."
"And that you revealed that you were a god?"
"She figured out by herself. We left at a fight and your mom wanted you out of the demigod world."
I didn't say anything. I tried to press the tears in. Don't cry, I thought. Not here. Not in front of him.
So it was basically his fault? That my mom turned weird and left me? "She left me," I said half-heartedly. "But I still found the demigod world, didn't I?"
"I'm sorry about you fate, Alexis," he said sounding broken. He stood up and he looked much smaller suddenly. "We'll meet again. War is coming, and I have to prepare. Train hard and do what they say. You will soon get use for your powers."
I tried to find a smile, but I couldn't. Poseidon left leaving a whiff of saltwater smell.
The way back to the elevator was pretty quiet. Will joined us, but he didn't say a thing. We didn't meet eyes, we acted like strangers. Travis and Connor tried to lighten up the mood, but they knew that it was hopeless.
They way down was awkward. The terrible elevator music was still playing through again. And we just walked out and stood outside the Empire State Building.
"What now?" Connor asked.
I shrugged. "Take a cab. Go home." It was still hard to believe. After all this time, the quest was actually over. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to be happy or not.
Travis found a taxi and said the address. It was probably the most depressing cab ride ever. Will stared out through the window, looking at the crowded streets of New York.
While driving I spotted a running kid with baggy clothes. He looked like an orphan but it was a sudden powerful aura around him. Nico di Angelo. It was him, the missing kid Percy told me about. The son of Hades.
Without thinking I opened the door roughly and dashed towards him. "Lex!" Connor shouted. "What the Hades are you doing?!"
I didn't have time to answer. Nico was running fast, his eyes scanned wildly around the city. I ran further towards me and almost got hit by a car. "Watch it, girlie!" the driver yelled.
I ignored him. I pushed my way through the mass of people and grabbed the arm of Nico's worn out jacket. He snapped his head toward me. "Let go of me!" he yelled. He was staring slightly, blushing a bit, but it disappeared quickly.
"Nico," I said softly. "Relax." I felt protective over this kid, he reminded me about how I was at the streets. The kid looked so depressed. He was probably 10 or 11, hard to say. With messy black hair like he rolled out of bed, oversized clothes that looked dirty like it was a sale at the clothes market at the garbage. His skin was dirty, but an olive-pale complexion was noticeable. His onyx eyes were empty and full of depression.
"Who are- wait! Y-You are that girl! Percy's sister!" he said, Percy's name was filled with venom. I wondered what possibly could happen that made him so depressed. Maybe because he was a son of Hades. But I had to keep shut, no one knew about it. Not even Chiron. Percy only told me because he said that I could look after Nico.
"Yeah," I said surprised. "How did you know?"
"None of your business!" he snapped.
I grabbed his shoulders. "Come back to camp. You're not safe here."
Nico clenched his teeth in anger. His eyes were hard and rueful. "You don't understand," he said bitterly. "I don't belong there, I'm an outcast."
"You're not! You will get friends, lots of fun-"
"Fun?" he said coldly. "I'm not going back, never. Just leave me alone."
I realized that he was gone. Out of nowhere. I already knew that this kid was more powerful that people gave credit for.
I turned around and saw Connor run towards me. "Was that-"
"No," I said quickly. I bit back my guilt. "It wasn't anything special."
He seemed wary, but he agreed. "The cab is waiting. You have to pay the extra." I didn't answer. I still stared at the empty spot where the current son of Hades stood.
As we stopped at the camp, the cabbie drove quickly away. I imagined this many times, but this was real. We were actually home.
I didn't wait, I sprinted up the hill. As I passed the border, I crashed into someone, making me and the person fall over.
I cursed. "Sorry!" I said. "I'm really- Heath? "
There was he. He was holding a bronze sword, and he wore the camp T-shirt, grinning like it was the best day. The girls that passed him were swooning. "Hey!" he said cheerfully. "This place is amazing!"
I gave him a big hug. "You actually came!" I said happily. "Have you seen the place?"
He shook his head. "Nah. Just when I came here some of those Aphrodite chicks gave me a T-shirt and took me to the weapon closet."
"Then I'll show you, duh!"
"Well someone's happy," a person teased behind. I hugged him. I held him closely taking in his sea smell. It felt so good to have him back. "You came back," Percy whispered. "That's great."
I laughed and continued to hug him. "I'm here, Prince Fish. You can stop worrying."
"I love you, sis."
"Love you too."
"Brother and sister reunion!" Silena squealed. I glanced up and my best friend was grinning to the top.
She instantly hugged me. "Tell me everything!" she said excitingly. It took quick time before everyone came and greeted us. All my friends came and I was never so happy to see them again. Will, Travis and Connor came and got greeted too. When I saw Will I felt like the happiness got squeezed out. He looked at me for the first time. His eyes were empty.
"Is it just me or did Will just get hotter?" Drew said, looking at Will with admiration.
I felt like barfing, maybe smack her. I promised the others that I would meet them again, and I slipped out of the crowd.
I went to the stall. There stood my Pegasus Rivermare neighing like she missed me. "Hey, girl," I cooed. "It's been a long time."
You don't say. How did suicide quest go?
It didn't surprise me when I heard the Pegasus talk. But seriously she sounded like a black girl rapper.
"Fine," I sighed. "But if a guy completely shut off the contact with you, should you be worried?"
You mean that cute Blondie? A keeper definitely. Hmm… I don't know.
As much as I liked my horse, she was sucking at love tips. I spent the whole time to the dinner talking with Rivermare. It wasn't anything helpful, but for once, it was nice to talk with someone who wasn't exactly a human.
Silena appeared. For a child of Aphrodite, I thought she would be afraid of horses, but you have no idea how wrong I took. She was the best at Pegasus riding.
I told her everything that happened. Including the kiss and the future children. "No way," she gasped. "You kissed him! How was it?"
"Amazing," I muttered. "But everything is so… complicated."
"I understand," she mumbled holding a handful with hay. "And you actually have kids in the future!"
"Maybe not," I mumbled. "On the terms we are on right now, I pretty sure we would go as slow as a snail."
"Work through it," she said softly. "It won't last forever."
I sighed. "I'll try. I just… miss him."
Silena looked at me. It looked like she already knew.
After the dinner, I offered Heath to show him around. Will looked at us once, and then walked away to his siblings.
"So how long are you planning to stay here?" I asked.
Heath looked thoughtful. "I dunno. Maybe one or two weeks so I can visit my parents soon."
"They're packing out right?
"Yeah," he said. "Mom is freaking out because it's messy around the apartment."
"They will be fine eventually."
"So how's things going for you?"
"Fine," I said. I didn't tell him about the problems, even though it felt nice to talk to him; I wasn't close enough to him to talk about boy problems. "You?"
"Pretty cool. Hey is that lava?"
I glanced up; I figured out that my heart wasn't in the tour. "Yeah." I told him the rest.
We continued. Heath was looking excited, and I told him everything about the camp. We passed the forest. "Don't go there alone or if you aren't armed," I warned.
Heath frowned. "Why?"
"Because it's dangerous."
He simply nodded. "Have you gotten claimed?" I asked.
"Probably soon," Heath said, shrugging carelessly. In his eyes I knew that he cared.
The rest of the tour was pretty much the same. We chatted, but we weren't romantically involved, if Will only knew that. Suddenly Kayla bounced towards us, looking panicked.
She kept babbling, but I didn't get a word. "Kayla!" I said. "What happened exactly?"
"A girl… she just appeared and collapsed-…. Will and I- took her to the infirmary…"
"What girl?" Heath asked.
"I don't know!" Kayla yelled sounding frantic.
"Let's go then! I said and dragged them toward the infirmary.
It was a small crowd around a bed with a girl lying in it. She was really pretty with ebony black hair and caramel skin. She was little, but I knew that if people messed with her people would get into serious trouble. She wore a black band t-shirt and blue jeans. She had Aphrodite features, high- cheek bones, plump lips and long eyelashes. She was strange, it was like two auras was fighting on her but we couldn't decide which one.
Heath was staring at her; I detected a small crush incoming. "Who is that?" Percy asked.
Will shrugged. He was sitting next to the girl. "She just appeared…"
"Appeared?" I asked. "How?"
He suddenly seemed distant. "Appeared, I don't know." He sounded like a robot that was trying to speak a foreign language.
"That doesn't make sense," Annabeth said, her grey eyes suspicious. I missed the brainy Annabeth so much.
"She just appeared, okay?" Will snapped, sounding protective over the girl. Chiron was sitting on the other side of the bed looking grave. I felt a tinge of jealousy bubble up, but I fought it back.
"How's her condition then, William?" Chiron asked.
Will hesitated. "She's just resting. She's fine."
"Name?" Katie asked.
Will shrugged again. I heard a small groan. The girl was holding her head like it was throbbing with pain, probably and she opened her dark eyes. They looked black, but I noticed that they were dark brown. She was seriously pretty, but also a little bit intimidating.
She blinked like the vision was blurry. She backed away when she looked at us.
"W-Who are you?" she asked confused out of her mind. I felt bad for her; no one liked being the newbie.
"I'm Will," he said. "This is my friends. Who are you?"
She yelped slightly, but then she suddenly turned into scary girl. "Grace Collins," she said quietly.
It was something weird, her name was powerful, giving me the vibe of beauty, but also… death.
A/N: I hope you like it! I may update late, maybe. The OC's maker is graceless angels! It was a pretty good OC and I thought it would fit into the story. I may put more OC's into the story, maybe I guess, let's see. Say your thought and REVIEW!
